Stars Notes: Bichsel, Harley, Lundkvist, DeSmith
The Dallas Stars have reversed their paper transaction that sent Lian Bichsel to the minor leagues. He’s expected to step back into the lineup on Monday, setting Bichsel up for his third NHL game. The first two have both gone well, with Bichsel recording a goal, penalty, and eight hits. His four hits per game, or 16.08 hits-per-60, ranks second among all NHL defensemen behind Vegas’ Robert Hagg, who’s recorded 11 hits in two games.
Bichsel’s NHL debut was long anticipated. He was an imperative piece of Rogle BK’s lineup last season, recording a mere four points in 29 games but serving a physical shutdown role in the top four through much of the season. Rogle went on an underdog run to the SHL championship but ultimately fell to Skelleftea AIK in five games. Bichsel made the move to the AHL quickly after and has since combined for 16 points, 60 penalty minutes, and a +6 in 37 games with the Texas Stars.
Where Bichsel slots in on Monday could be up for question. Thomas Harley, who operated ahead of Bichsel in the rookie’s first two games, is listed as a game-time decision due to illness, per Brien Rea of Bally Sports Southwest. Rea also shares that Nils Lundkvist, who sat out of Saturday’s game with the flu, is expected to return on Monday. With Bichsel potentially filling in for Harley, Brendan Smith will step out of the lineup for Lundkvist’s return.
In additional news from Dallas’ Monday practice, it appears goaltender Casey DeSmith has also returned to full health after missing Saturday’s game with illness. His availability is evidenced by Dallas’ lack of a goaltending call-up, pointed out by Owen Newkirk of the Dallas Stars podcast.
Evening Notes: Parssinen, Kuzmenko, Dumba
The Nashville Predators have continued to be one of the NHL’s busiest teams this season, making trades to revamp their goaltending and move out stalling veterans in favor of top prospects. It seems the latter trend could continue, with the team eyeing trades for forward Juuso Parssinen per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman in the latest 32 Thoughts. Friedman compared the rumors to Nashville’s separating from Philip Tomasino and Dante Fabbro, who have each found far more success in their new homes. Tomasino has three goals and four points in seven games with Pittsburgh, while Fabbro has seven points in 15 games with Columbus.
Parssinen has just five points through 15 games this season – four of which came in a four-game span in mid-November. He’s recorded no scoring and a -6 in seven games since that hot streak, losing grip on his third-line role along the way. This year marks Parssinen’s first with a full-time role on the Predators roster, after splitting the last two seasons between the NHL and AHL. He scored an admirable 25 points in 45 games as a rookie – coupled by nine points in 10 AHL games – in 2022-23. But Parssinen took a step back at both levels last season, scoring just 12 points in 44 NHL games and 25 points in 36 AHL games. Making the Predators roster out of training camp was an encouraging sign heading into this year, but after 15 games, the former seventh-round pick may no longer be a fit. His six-foot-three frame and serviceable play at center should draw plenty of attention from around the league, though his 42 points in 104 career games likely won’t earn Nashville a hefty return.
Other notes from around the league:
- Calgary Flames winger Andrei Kuzmenko is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Walker Duehr is expected to fill his role in Saturday’s game against Florida. Kuzmenko has just one goal and 10 points in 28 games this season. He was healthy scratched for three games at the start of the month, and has since recorded one point and a -2 in three games. He’ll need a return to full health to come with more confident scoring if he wants to ward off emerging prospects Duehr and Jakob Pelletier.
- Dallas Stars head coach Pete DeBoer provided a bit of clarity into Matt Dumba‘s injury, telling Brian Rea of Bally Sports Southwest that he is somewhere between day-to-day and week-to-week. Dumba has missed Dallas’ last two games after suffering an upper-body injury in Sunday’s matchup against Calgary. He’s been oft-injured in his first year with the Stars, limited in or outright missing 10 of Dallas’ 28 games this season. That’s made adjusting to the new setting tough, evidenced by Dumba’s one assist in 19 games – a team-low in scoring among players with more than a few games played. Dumba faced nagging injuries between 2018 and 2021, but rediscovered his health in the last two seasons. Unfortunately, he hasn’t found the scoring of his early career in the return. Once a 50-point scorer, Dumba posted just 26 points in 155 games between 2022-23 and 2023-24. He played for three teams – Minnesota, Arizona, and Tampa Bay – in that span.
Stars Recall Magnus Hellberg
With Casey DeSmith out with the flu, the Stars needed a second goaltender for their game tonight against St. Louis. That netminder will be Magnus Hellberg as the team announced (Twitter link) that the veteran has been recalled from AHL Texas.
The 34-year-old is in his first season with Dallas after signing a one-year, two-way deal with them in mid-August, one worth the league minimum of $775K in the NHL and containing a guaranteed $475K payout. Hellberg has played in 13 games so far with Texas and isn’t off to the best of starts, putting up a 3.08 GAA with a .894 SV% but makes more sense to bring up on a short-term basis than prospect Remi Poirier, his backup in the minors.
Hellberg does have some NHL experience under his belt, albeit limited. He has seen NHL action in six of the last ten years, compiling 26 appearances altogether where he has a 3.08 GAA and a .890 SV%. Most of that action came in the 2022-23 campaign when he got into 18 games between Ottawa and Detroit.
Dallas had an open roster spot before bringing Hellberg up so no corresponding move needed to be made to add him to the roster.
Stars Recall Lian Bichsel For Potential NHL Debut
The Stars have recalled 2022 first-round pick Lian Bichsel from AHL Texas ahead of tonight’s game against the Predators, Brien Rea of FanDuel Sports Network Southwest reports. The 20-year-old could make his NHL debut with Mathew Dumba likely to sit out with an upper-body injury.
It’s Bichsel’s first in-season recall. He was summoned from the AHL during the Stars’ playoff run last season and was briefly considered an option to make his NHL debut in postseason action, but it didn’t come to pass.
The towering 6’6″, 234-lb left-shot defender is in his first full season of pro hockey in North America. The Switzerland native has been logging heavy minutes for Texas, posting three goals and six assists for nine points in 21 games with a +8 rating to lead Baby Stars defenders.
However, it’s far from Bichsel’s first taste of professional play. The well-rounded defender has logged action in a top-level European pro league in every season since 2020-21, first in his native Switzerland with EHC Biel-Bienne before making the jump to the Swedish Hockey League with Leksands IF and Rögle BK. The physical shutdown defender made 29 appearances on loan to Rögle last season, recording four points and 28 PIMs before adding six points in 15 playoff games en route to a league finals appearances. He came to the AHL immediately after his season in Sweden ended, notching seven points and a -2 rating in 16 games for Texas.
Bichsel directly replacing Dumba in the lineup would mean playing on his off-side. It would mean the same for veteran Brendan Smith, Dallas’ other option to enter the lineup for Dumba, although the 35-year-old does have a decent amount of experience playing on the right side despite behind a left shot.
The Stars previously had two open spots on the active roster and are now down to one. Bichsel’s recall leaves them with $1.24MM in current cap space, per PuckPedia.
Stars Could Wait Until After 4 Nations To Make Moves, Dumba Misses Practice
The long-term injury to Stars center Tyler Seguin has many believing that the Stars will be very aggressive on the trade market. However, Daily Faceoff’s Jeff Marek wonders if they might wait until after the 4 Nations Face-Off in February to make any big splash on the trade front. For starters, that would allow them to bank more in-season cap space but it would also allow them to hedge their bets in case goaltender Jake Oettinger was injured in the event. Marek adds that among the areas that GM Jim Nill will be targeting between now and the March 7th deadline is getting tougher towards the bottom end of their forward group.
Tyler Seguin To Undergo Hip Surgery, Out 4-6 Months
The Stars announced that forward Tyler Seguin will undergo extensive hip surgery on Thursday and miss the next four to six months. He’ll have two procedures, both on his left hip – one to address a femoroacetabular impingement creating joint damage and one to repair a labral tear.
It’s not necessarily season-ending, but it’s certainly possible. If he returns at the optimistic end of that timeline, the Stars would still have four or five regular-season games left on their schedule for him to play. A return to play during the postseason is the most likely outcome for Seguin given the wide timeline, though, allowing the Stars to keep his $9.85MM cap hit on long-term injured reserve for a massive amount of spending flexibility at the trade deadline.
Seguin has missed five games this year with a recurring lower-body injury, now clearly a hip issue. He was placed on IR before Monday’s game against Utah. He previously missed three straight games in October.
It’s tough news for Seguin, who missed nearly all of the 2020-21 campaign after undergoing a similar surgery on his right hip. He was extremely open about his arduous recovery process from that procedure, which ended up yielding a separate knee surgery and essentially required him to re-learn how to walk.
Past injury issues aside, the news also puts an incredible damper on what had been something of a renaissance season for the 2010 second-overall pick. Seguin had nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points through his first 19 games, on pace to break the point-per-game mark for the first time in nine years while placing third on the team in scoring behind linemates Matt Duchene and Mason Marchment.
Missing Seguin’s services offensively is also of legitimate concern for Dallas, who ranks ninth in the league with 3.38 goals per game but has also faced underwhelming starts from top-liners Jason Robertson (5-9–14 in 24 GP) and Wyatt Johnston (4-10–14 in 24 GP). They’ll need to turn that around quickly to help the Stars stay in the top three of the Central Division while also looking at some depth players like rookie Mavrik Bourque to take on some of the offensive burden. Bourque has averaged under 11 minutes per game this season after being crowned the AHL’s most valuable player last season, scoring only once in 19 games.
Seguin, 32, is in the sixth season of the eight-year, $78.8MM extension he inked in 2018. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

Stars Reassign Justin Hryckowian To AHL
Justin Hryckowian‘s brief recall with the Dallas Stars has ended for now. According to a team announcement, the Stars organization has loaned Hryckowian back to their AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars.
Dallas has an extremely narrow salary cap cushion so it’s likely that Hryckowian will be re-called tomorrow before the Stars’ matchup against the Los Angeles Kings. He was originally recalled to fill the injured Tyler Seguin‘s roster spot but Dallas still has 12 healthy forwards to work with.
Still, Hryckowian continues to build a name for himself in the American Hockey League and could be another long-term middle-six fixture for the Stars. He’s in his first full season with AHL Texas after signing with Dallas as a collegiate free agent from Northwestern University last year. That first full season has turned into a red-hot start with Hryckowian scoring five goals and 16 points in 17 games with a +9 rating.
Stars Place Tyler Seguin On IR, Recall Justin Hryckowian
The Dallas Stars have shifted things around ahead of their Monday matchup against Utah. They’ve recalled forward Justin Hryckowian and assigned defender Alexander Petrovic. Additionally, star forward Tyler Seguin has been placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury.
Seguin has carried a lingering lower-body injury through most of the season, and was expected to miss at least one up coming game to nurse the issue. Seguin has been on-fire recently despite the teetering health. He has multi-point games in two of Dallas’ last four outings, including a two-point effort on Friday. The Stars’ star has nine goals and 20 points in 19 games this season, ranking third on the team in scoring.
Seguin will be replaced by young forward Hryckowian, who’s yet to make his NHL debut. The 23-year-old winger is in the first full season of his career. He played in 12 AHL games, and scored three points, at the end of last season – signing with the Texas Stars as an undrafted college free agent. He’s played exceptionally well in the pro setting, with a team-leading 16 points in 17 AHL games this season.
Meanwhile, Petrovic will return to the minors after two games, and no scoring, on the Dallas roster. Petrovic has nine points in 14 AHL games this season, the highest scoring pace of his 14-year professional career. He’s totaled 50 points in 266 career NHL games; and 160 points in 441 AHL games.
Hintz And Lundkvist Back Tonight
- The Dallas Stars will see the return of both forward Roope Hintz (undisclosed) and defenseman Nils Lundkvist (lower-body) on Friday night per NHL.com’s Mike Heika. Hintz sat out of Dallas’ Wednesday loss to Chicago, while Lundkvist has missed the last three games. Lundkvist will replace Brendan Smith, while Hintz will tag out with Logan Stankoven, who’s injured with “a little thing from last game,” per Heika. Hintz has eight goals and 13 points in 20 games this season, two fewer points than Stankoven has managed in 21 games. While they swap out in the top six, Lundkvist will search for his first goal of the season – currently boasting just one assist in 15 games.
Stars Recall Alexander Petrovic
The Stars announced Friday that they’ve recalled defenseman Alexander Petrovic from AHL Texas. No corresponding transaction is required since the team has an open spot on the active roster and nearly $2MM in current cap space, more than enough to accommodate his league-minimum $775K cap hit.
Dallas summoned Petrovic, 32, once earlier this season to serve as injury insurance on the blue line for a few games in mid-October, but he didn’t get into game action. The 6’5″, 207-lb righty is now in his fourth season with the Stars organization, where he’s served as an alternate captain for their AHL club since day one and is off to an unusually hot start offensively, racking up three goals and six assists for nine points in 14 games to tie for the team lead in scoring among defensemen.
Once a depth mainstay on the Panthers’ NHL roster in the mid-2010s, call-ups have been few and far between for Petrovic in the last few years. He made one regular-season and seven playoff appearances for Dallas last season, marking his first NHL action since splitting 2018-19 between Florida and the Oilers.
Petrovic’s recall will likely yield an appearance or two this time, notes team radio analyst Bruce LeVine. He’s expected to replace Mathew Dumba in the lineup tonight against the Avalanche in a third-pairing role alongside Brendan Smith. The duo struggled in the Stars’ 6-2 loss to the Blackhawks on Wednesday, controlling 31.4% of expected goals at 5-on-5, per MoneyPuck. This will be Dumba’s third healthy scratch of the season after signing a two-year, $7.5MM contract in free agency that looks like a rare misguided investment from Dallas general manager Jim Nill.
Petrovic’s previous recall lasted five days, so he can remain on the Stars’ roster for 25 more (or play 10 games) before he needs waivers to return to the AHL.
