Sabres Listening To Trade Offers On JJ Peterka

June 19th: Furthering Friedman’s report from Sunday, Frank Seravalli announced on the DFO Rundown podcast that the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Vancouver Canucks all have confirmed interest in acquiring Peterka. Additionally, Sammi Silber of the DC Backcheck reported that the Sabres are asking for a right-handed defenseman to replace Bowen Byram on the roster, plus additional NHL-ready assets.

June 15th: The Sabres are listening to trade offers on winger JJ Peterka, reports Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. While they’ve been reluctant to consider moving Peterka as his name popped up in trade speculation over the last few months, “their answer has changed” to teams inquiring about his availability, Friedman said on Sunday’s 32 Thoughts podcast.

“It’s believed he would like to go somewhere else, and I just think that reality is sinking in a bit,” Friedman said. “I think the Sabres realize they have to at least look into it, and I think in the last little bit it’s gone from ’we don’t want to do it and we’re not doing it’ to ’we don’t want to do it but we at least have to look into it.’”

Peterka, a pending restricted free agent, is also viewed as a legitimate offer-sheet target if he becomes an RFA without a new contract on July 1. An offer sheet AAV in the fifth tier of compensation between $7.02MM and $9.36MM, in line with Peterka’s projected cap hit on a long-term extension, per PuckPedia, would net the Sabres a team’s 2026 first, second, and third-round picks. If a trade crosses the finish line, the return would presumably come above that value, considering the Sabres are a virtual lock to recoup those assets in a worst-case scenario.

The Sabres’ top-nine forward group has been in constant flux over the past couple of years. They’ve acquired Ryan McLeod and Joshua Norris down the middle, graduated prospect Zach Benson to NHL duties out of the gate, and shipped out Dylan Cozens, Casey Mittelstadt, and 2022 top-10 pick Matthew Savoie in corresponding deals.

They find themselves in more unfamiliar territory with Peterka. Under general manager Kevyn Adams, the Sabres haven’t let negotiations with an RFA-to-be get to this point. They’ve either parted ways with hopeful core pieces after already signing them to long-term deals that weren’t panning out early on (Cozens) or traded them in-season in the final year of their contract with an advance understanding that they were far apart in talks (Mittelstadt). With Peterka, though, it doesn’t seem to be a case of the Sabres’ willingness to pay or commit to him – it’s the players’ uncertainty about signing long-term with the Sabres preventing a contract from getting done.

Buffalo has $23.2MM in cap space to spend this offseason with seven roster spots to fill, per PuckPedia. They have a pair of truly high-priced RFAs to contend with in Peterka and defenseman Bowen Byram, and it looked early on that they may only be able to sign one of them. They’ve been more active in soliciting/listening to trade interest in Byram but could understandably be more incentivized to keep him if they get the sense the situation with Peterka won’t result in him staying in Buffalo.

A trade is far preferable to an offer sheet in terms of compensation for the Sabres, who need at least a top-nine winger in return for Peterka to help them shoulder his loss and keep their postseason hopes alive in 2025-26, in addition to potential UFA signings, as they aim to end their playoff drought at 14 seasons. Peterka, a 2020 second-round pick, scored a career-high 41 assists and 68 points last season to tie for second on the club in scoring. That’s not easily replaceable production, and they’ll need to perform significant roster surgery to compensate if they do end up moving him.

Multiple Teams Interested In Sabres’ Bowen Byram

The looming NHL Draft has kicked the trade market into its off-season form. Forwards Jason Robertson, Mason Marchment, and Martin Necas have headlined rumors so far. Now, the Buffalo Sabres could offer the top defenseman on the trade market, with NHL.com’s Kevin Weekes reporting that multiple teams are interested in acquiring former Stanley Cup champion Bowen Byram. The Sabres were said to be gauging Byram’s market interest following the end of the regular season, though the player’s agent walked back those reports a day later.

It seems Byram will have a market if Buffalo indeed tries to move him. He originally joined the Sabres at the 2024 Trade Deadline in a one-for-one swap that sent center Casey Mittelstadt to the Colorado Avalanche. Byram was in the midst of a stout year in Colorado, with 20 points in 55 games. He finished the year off with nine points, and strong all-around play, in 18 games with the Sabres. That performance earned Byram an everyday role in Buffalo’s top-four this season, often spent playing alongside fellow left-shot defender Rasmus Dahlin.

A full season in a top role naturally led Byram to a career-year. He recorded a career-high 31 assists and 38 points while playing in all 82 games of Buffalo’s season – one of only two Sabres to play in every game. His scoring ranked third on Buffalo’s blue line behind Dahlin (68 points) and 2021 first-overall pick Owen Power (40 points). Byram’s year was marred by hot-and-cold play and glaring question marks, but it nonetheless stood out as the first true statement performance for the former fourth-overall pick. He showed he could stand up well to a top role and even hold down the fort as his top-end linemates faced missed games.

Those facts will make the 23-year-old Byram hard to miss. He ranks 41st among active defensemen in career scoring before the age of 24 with 110 points in 246 games. That places him among company like Zach Bogosian (114 P in 352 GP) and Marc-Edouard Vlasic (110 P in 389 GP) – though, on a per-game basis, Byram’s 0.45 P/GP rank 30th between Oliver Ekman-Larsson (0.45, 154 P in 340 GP) and Morgan Rielly (0.44, 171 P in 388 GP).

Signs seem to point towards Byram still sitting as a young defender with sky-high potential, even if he hasn’t found a permanent lineup role just yet. But that sentiment has rung true for many years, despite Byram’s hot-and-cold struggles continuing through a move across the league. In offering Byram in a trade, the Sabres will be banking on a solid year in a top role being enough to increase their return on 2024’s investment. Byram could make plenty of sense for a playoff contender looking to get younger without losing strength – or a young up-and-comer that misses out on top 2025 NHL Draft left-defense prospect Matthew Schaefer, like the San Jose Sharks or Chicago Blackhawks.

The cost of Byram on the open market will be a situation to monitor as the Sabres eye potentially changing their standing in the 2025 draft. They currently select at ninth overall, directly after the Seattle Kraken and before the Anaheim Ducks.

Seravalli: JJ Peterka A Prime Offer Sheet Candidate

Much has already been made of Brad Marchand’s upcoming trip through unrestricted free agency, with recent reports indicating he could earn as much as $8MM a year given his durability and impressive postseason performance with the Florida Panthers. Piggybacking off that report, TSN’s Chris Johnston shared today on TSN 1050 that Marchand will prioritize earning maximization on his next contract, rather than term.

According to Johnston, Marchand isn’t limiting his desire to salary, adding that a team like the Toronto Maple Leafs could make up with off-ice endorsements for what they lack in available dollars to spend. If that is the case, it would likely broaden Marchand’s market to include other large-market teams, such as the Vegas Golden Knights, Vancouver Canucks, and New York Rangers, especially since these teams may not have as much financial flexibility as they approach the summer months.

Still, it wouldn’t be difficult for Marchand to find a new employer on the open market. He remains a capable top-six winger heading into his age-38 season, and his nearly point-per-game scoring average in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs should make him a priority for teams with a legitimate chance at the Stanley Cup next season.

Other notes from the Atlantic Division:

  • After already being named the top player on his trade board, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff lists Buffalo Sabre JJ Peterka as one of the likeliest candidates for an offer sheet this summer. It’s an interesting proposition to consider, as Seravalli lists Peterka’s potential offer sheet at the higher end of the fifth tier for compensation, which would require the signing team to send Buffalo their 2026 first, second, and third-round pick. Still, Buffalo has the financial flexibility to match nearly any offer sheet signed by Peterka, meaning they’ll have to weigh the hypothetical compensation against Peterka’s current value.
  • The Ottawa Senators and veteran Claude Giroux have reportedly been negotiating a new contract for a few weeks, and Bruce Garrioch of The Ottawa Citizen shares that those contract talks have reached a pivotal stage. The two sides met last week during the NHL Combine in Buffalo, and they continue to work toward an agreeable deal. Giroux recently completed a three-year, $19.5MM contract with the Senators in which he scored 71 goals and 193 points in 245 games.

Sabres Mulling Options As Draft Approaches

While Buffalo hosted the 2025 NHL Scouting Combine, the team remained focused on evaluating key prospects they believe could be available with the ninth overall pick, including defender Jackson Smith, per Rachel Lenzi of The Buffalo News.

Lenzi listed five prospects the Sabres will keep their eye on when the draft kicks off in a few weeks. Among them is Smith, a 6’3, 190-pound defender out of the WHL. The offensively gifted blueliner put up 11 goals and 54 points in 63 games for the Tri-City Americans, and excelled for Team Canada in the U18 World Championship, posting four goals and five points in seven games.

When asked what he could bring to the Sabres, Smith noted his size, skating, and two-way playing ability as his biggest strengths. “A big defenseman who skates really well, who has a lot of offensive upside, but can also play on the ’D’ side of the puck, can run a power play and can play PK (penalty kill) as well,” he said.

Lenzi, who notes that the Sabres will have their draft headquarters in Buffalo as this year’s draft will be decentralized, also lists defenders Kashawn Aitcheson and Radim Mrtka, as well as forwards Jack O’Brien and Anton Frondell, as options for the Sabres to consider. The biggest name on the list is arguably Frondell, who is listed as Elite Prospects’ fifth-ranked prospect ahead of the draft.

The 6’1″, 205-pound Swedish center put together a solid showing at the combine, finishing in the top five in several tests, including a first-place result in Aerobic Fitness: VO2max (ml/kg/min).

If Frondell does fall to the ninth pick, he said he would provide the Sabres with a high compete level. As he noted, “It doesn’t matter if it’s a game or practice. I always compete and I always think winning is really important.”

While Frondell and O’Brien did not disclose whether they met with the Sabres’ front office during the combine, Aitcheson, Mrtka, and Smith all confirmed they did. Smith noted that “four or five” front-office members were present, including general manager Kevyn Adams and senior advisor Jarmo Kekalainen.

Could Leone Be An Assistant Candidate In Pittsburgh?

  • In a recent episode of The Sheet (video link), Daily Faceoff’s Jeff Marek suggested that Mike Leone could be a candidate to join Dan Muse’s coaching staff. Leone spent this season as head coach of the Sabres’ AHL affiliate in Rochester, leading them to the North Division Final.  However, Leone’s professional coaching experience is rather limited with just this season and one year as an ECHL assistant after retiring in 2017.  He has, however, also worked at the NCAA and USHL levels along with USA Hockey at the junior level and would be an intriguing addition as a coach to help in player development.

Sabres Hire Jarmo Kekäläinen As Senior Advisor

The Sabres have named former Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekäläinen as a senior advisor to GM Kevyn Adams, per a team release.

Kekäläinen “will be involved in all areas of the hockey department,” the club said. This is Kekäläinen’s first NHL job since Columbus relieved him of his duties as GM in February 2024. He’s been working in his native Finland since then as a senior advisor to Helsinki’s HIFK. Still, he’s interviewed for multiple NHL GM vacancies in the meantime, including the Hurricanes’ last year and the Islanders’ earlier this month.

It’s no secret the Sabres were looking to hire a more established NHL executive to work with the much younger Adams this summer as the franchise navigates a turning point amid their league-record 14-year playoff drought. They’ve been linked to recently-fired Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello and Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan at points over the last few weeks, but opted for Kekäläinen instead.

“As we navigated the process of hiring for this role, it very quickly became apparent that Jarmo was an ideal candidate to augment our front office,” Adams said in a statement. “From his extensive history in scouting, his long tenure as an NHL general manager and his vast experience at the international and European pro levels, Jarmo has a remarkable resume and a long history of success in this league. I spoke with a number of candidates about this role and it’s clear to me that Jarmo is a perfect fit for our team. I couldn’t be more excited to add another significant piece to our front office as we continue the process of adding to our staff.”

Kekäläinen will advise Adams as the duo determines whether to trade or extend a slate of pending restricted free agents that includes defenseman Bowen Byram and winger JJ Peterka. Also on the team’s offseason checklist is a new deal for center Ryan McLeod and opening extension talks with winger Alex Tuch.

The 58-year-old Kekäläinen hopes today’s appointment is a stepping stone back to an NHL GM role, whether that ends up being in Buffalo or elsewhere. He was one of the league’s longest-tenured GMs until his firing in Columbus, which hired him midway through the 2012-13 campaign. Before that, he spent three years as the Senators’ director of player personnel (1999-2002) and eight years with the Blues as their director of amateur scouting and assistant GM (2002-2010).

Multiple Teams Showing Interest In Marco Rossi

The Blackhawks, Kraken, Flyers, Penguins, and Sabres are among the teams that have shown interest in acquiring Wild pending restricted free agent center Marco Rossi, according to RG’s James Murphy. While general manager Bill Guerin has refuted trade speculation surrounding the 2020 ninth overall pick in the past, there hasn’t been much noise around progress in contract talks so far this offseason, especially after he had his minutes slashed in the playoffs by head coach John Hynes.

For a team considering parting ways with a young player, it’s never a good sign when virtually every club with a need at the position with the assets to make an appealing trade work steps up to the plate. Minnesota’s deployment of Rossi, particularly this season, has been puzzling. The Austrian pivot finished sixth in Calder Trophy voting in 2023-24 and took strides in 2024-25 to prove his floor as a second-line center, notching a 24-36–60 scoring line in all 82 games despite missing star wingman Kirill Kaprizov for most of the campaign. He averaged north of 18 minutes per game in the regular season but played just 11 minutes per night in the playoffs, although that didn’t stop him from still contributing a pair of goals and an assist in the Wild’s first-round elimination at the hands of the Golden Knights.

With Rossi posting those point totals on a bottom-10 offensive team, it’s easy to see why many clubs are optimistic about his ability to slot into their top-six immediately and, at worst, replicate his performance from last year. From Minnesota’s standpoint, assuming their internal projection of him is as pessimistic as his late-season role reduction indicates, it makes sense they wouldn’t want to commit to a long-term deal that will likely cost north of $7MM per season. For Rossi, it makes little sense for him to sign a bridge deal in Minnesota if he feels he won’t get the minutes there to maximize his earning potential a few years down the line.

If the Wild can’t work out a trade for Rossi, an offer sheet threat looms. A long-term deal for Rossi will likely end up at seven years at around $7.4MM per season, AFP Analytics projects. That would require a team to surrender their 2026 first, second, and third-round pick as compensation if the Wild decline to match. As such, they’ll likely set their price around there in trade talks, at least in terms of comparable value. Considering their increased salary cap flexibility this summer and intact core, it makes sense they’d rather pursue trade options to land a more NHL-ready asset in place of a return largely centered around draft picks.

Of the five teams mentioned by Murphy as having interest in Rossi, all but the Sabres have the picks to acquire Rossi in the $7.02MM to $9.36MM range for an offer sheet. Buffalo would need to reacquire their 2026 second-rounder to do so. They sent it to the Senators in this year’s Dylan Cozens/Joshua Norris swap.

Free Agent Focus: Buffalo Sabres

Free agency is just over a month away, and teams are looking ahead to when it opens. There will be several impact players set to hit the open market in July, while many teams also have key restricted free agents to re-sign. We continue our look around the NHL with an overview of the free agent situation for the Sabres.

Key Restricted Free Agents

D Bowen Byram – The Sabres were hoping the 2019 fourth overall pick would fully establish himself as a top-pairing option in 2024-25 after acquiring him from the Avalanche at last year’s trade deadline. On most fronts, that’s what happened. After struggling through injuries in the early seasons of his career, he played a full 82 games for the first time and averaged a career-high 22:42 per game despite not receiving much power-play time. That also means 35 of his career-high 38 points came at even strength, tied for 15th in the league among defensemen. But with poor advanced metrics when lower in the lineup away from Rasmus Dahlin and a highly unbalanced ratio of lefties to righties on Buffalo’s blue line, they’ve been looking at possible trade options. Whether it’s in western New York or elsewhere, a long-term deal this summer for Byram should land him north of $7MM per season.

F JJ Peterka – In his first three seasons, Peterka has steadily upped his offensive output to an impressive 27-41–68 scoring line in 77 games in his first contract year. He did so primarily in top-line deployment with Tage Thompson. Yet with the Sabres still unable to find a postseason-caliber formula and Peterka in line for a huge raise this summer, he also finds himself in some trade speculation. A long-term deal for him will, like Byram’s, at least start at $7MM and could inch closer to $8MM per season given how consistently the 23-year-old has developed offensively thus far.

F Ryan McLeod – After the Sabres gave up high-end center prospect Matthew Savoie to acquire McLeod from the Oilers last summer, he justified Buffalo’s faith in him with a 20-goal, 53-point breakout in 79 games. Nearly all of that production came at even strength, too. He barely saw power-play time but was arguably the Sabres’ best two-way center in 2024-25, posting a +13 rating to rank second on the team while seeing significant penalty kill deployment. Given his all-around impact, he’ll likely land at least double his $2.1MM qualifying offer and could realistically approach the $5MM mark. With Dylan Cozens and Casey Mittelstadt gone in trades over the past few years and Thompson seeing increased time on the wing, they can’t afford to lose McLeod at center.

F Jack Quinn – The 2020 No. 8 pick was looking to get his feet back under him after Achilles surgery and a lower-body injury robbed him of most of his 2023-24 season. It didn’t pan out that way as a slow start led to a string of healthy scratches, but he did heat up with a 6-13–19 scoring line in 27 games after the 4 Nations Face-Off. That should at least help his case to earn another contract in Buffalo and get another chance at being part of the long-term future. Still, with how inconsistent he’s been thus far in his career, he likely isn’t in a position to command much more than $2MM per season on what could be as short as a one-year prove-it deal.

D Jacob Bernard-Docker – Acquired from the Senators in the Cozens/Joshua Norris deadline deal, the 2018 first-rounder looked to establish himself as an everyday lineup option down the stretch after a high ankle sprain derailed the first half of his season in Ottawa. He received strict third-pairing minutes but was quite effective in them, posting four points and a plus-three rating in 15 games for the Sabres with strong relative possession metrics (48.3 CF%, 57.9 xGF%, per Hockey Reference). He’s untested in top-four minutes, but he’s a big, defensively responsible righty the team sorely needed in their system. Expect Buffalo to try to negotiate a mid-term deal as a result, and pay a bit more to do so, potentially upward of the $2MM mark.

Key Unrestricted Free Agents

G James Reimer – The 37-year-old is the only pending unrestricted free agent who saw anything resembling consistent NHL minutes in 2024-25. After signing a one-year deal over the summer and briefly being lost on waivers to the Ducks for the first month of the season, he spent most of the season as Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s backup with the younger Levi struggling in his NHL chances. He made good on the Sabres’ $1MM bet, saving eight goals above expected in 24 appearances, per MoneyPuck. His .899 SV% and 2.90 GAA were far better than either Luukkonen’s or Levi’s numbers, and he was the only Buffalo goalie with a points percentage north of .500 with a 10-8-2 record. There might not be a role for him next year with Levi having another excellent AHL season, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Sabres wanted to bring him back as insurance.

Projected Cap Space

For the first time in a while, the Sabres don’t have virtually unlimited cap space to work with. Handing out long-term deals to players they hoped would be long-term core pieces over the last few years is starting to take effect. While they do have $23.2MM in flexibility for next season and seven roster spots to fill, nearly all of that could be taken up by deals for Byram, Peterka, and McLeod if they opt to keep the first two and go long-term with both.

Seravalli: JJ Peterka The Top Trade Target Entering The Offseason

In his new trade board entering the offseason, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff opines that Buffalo Sabres forward JJ Peterka is the top trade target. Peterka tied for second in scoring among Sabres players this season and will become a restricted free agent on July 1st.

Seravalli writes that several teams put together offers at the trade deadline for Peterka, but Buffalo General Manager Kevyn Adams had no interest in trading him. Despite Seravalli’s claim that a ’change of scenery’ is in order, it’s difficult to imagine the Sabres moving on from one of their top forwards this summer.

Still, Peterka has come into his own over the last two years, scoring 55 goals and 118 points in 159 games, with 93 of those points coming at even strength. It is reasonable to assume that Buffalo would receive a generous offer for Peterka, but he seems like a player the team should want to keep around for the long term. According to PuckPedia, the Sabres will have more than $23MM entering the offseason, giving them plenty of flexibility to seek a long-term contract with Peterka.

Lukas Rousek Signs Two-Year Deal With HV71

May 27: HV71 finalized Rousek’s signing today, per a team release. It’s a two-year contract.

May 24: Sabres center Lukas Rousek’s season was extended by at least one more game following AHL Rochester’s victory on Friday in Laval but it appears his time in North America will soon be coming to an end.  Expressen’s Johan Svensson reports (subscription link) that Rousek will be joining HV71 of the SHL next season.

The 25-year-old was a sixth-round pick by Buffalo back in 2019, going 160th overall.  After spending the following two years in the Czech Extraliga, Rousek came to North America and has spent the last four seasons in Buffalo’s system, primarily at the AHL level.

This season, Rousek played in all 72 games with AHL Rochester, notching seven goals and 35 assists, seeing his per-game numbers dip for the second straight year.  He has been more productive in the playoffs though, collecting two goals and six helpers through six games thus far.

Rousek didn’t see any NHL action this season but does have 17 games at the top level with the Sabres during his time with them.  In those outings, he has a goal and three assists in 10:42 of ice time per game.  Between his age and lack of experience in the NHL, Rousek qualifies for Group Six unrestricted free agency this summer.

Instead of looking to try his hand in another organization to see if he could land a little higher on the depth chart to get another NHL chance, Rousek instead will try his hand with HV71 where he should have a chance to play a prominent role and a good showing with them could boost his stock in North America should he decide to give playing there another push.
