Blackhawks Place Brandon Saad On Injured Reserve

The Chicago Blackhawks have the least number of victories in the Western Conference and while the team is hoping it can rebound from their poor record, but they will have to do it without one of their most productive scorers as the Blackhawks announced they have placed forward Brandon Saad on injured reserve with a right ankle injury, retroactive to Dec. 19.

Saad was injured Thursday against Winnipeg when he was hit against the boards by defenseman Luca Sbisa in the second period. Saad’s leg twisted underneath him as he fell. He did not return. He could be out as long as two weeks. Saad is second on the team in goals as he currently has 11 goals this year.

The Blackhawks are expected to move Dylan Sikura into Saad’s spot on the first line next two Jonathan Toews and Dominik Kubalik. The 24-year-old winger is still looking for his first goal through 40 NHL games.

Vancouver’s Josh Leivo Expected To Miss 2-3 Months

The Vancouver Canucks, struggling recently with a 5-5 record in their last 10 games, have lost a member of their top line for quite a bit as head coach Travis Green announced that forward Josh Leivo will miss two to three months with a fractured knee cap. It’s a tough injury for the forward, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.

The 26-year-old was injured during Thursday’s game against Vegas when he took a hit from Golden Knights’ defenseman Nick Holden. Leivo appeared to hit his knee against the boards after Holden hit him from behind. There was no penalty on the play and the Department of Player Safety didn’t feel that the hit required any supplementary discipline.

Leivo, skating alongside Bo Horvat and Tanner Pearson on the top line, was set to be having a career season as he has seven goals and 19 points this year. His previous career high was last season when he 14 goals and 24 points between Toronto and Vancouver. For the moment, the Canucks have moved Loui Eriksson onto the top line to replace Leivo.

Vancouver Canucks’ Sven Baertschi Clears Waivers

Monday: Baertschi has cleared waivers according to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet.

Sunday: Just a day after requesting a trade, the Vancouver Canucks announced they have placed forward Sven Baertschi on waivers. This will be the second time this season the 27-year-old has been put on the waiver wire.

Baertschi was put on waivers back on Sept. 30th, just before the start of the season. The veteran of 291 NHL games cleared, most likely due to his $3.37MM cap hit for the next two years. He was sent to Utica for the first time since the 2014-15 season. Baertschi didn’t let that stop him, however, as he has dominated at the AHL level, but has failed to make much a difference with the Canucks. With the Utica Comets this season, Baertschi has played 16 games and has scored four goals and 19 assists for 23 points, well above a point-per-game average.

Baertschi, who has been quite injury prone over his career, has struggled at the NHL level since signing a three-year extension back in the summer of 2018. He appeared in just 29 games last season due to injuries again, scoring nine goals and 14 points. This year, Baertschi has managed just two assists in six games. Known as a scoring, top-six player, the team doesn’t see him as such and don’t see him as a bottom-six option.

Snapshots: DeBoer, Boqvist, Raymond, Peel

Many coaches have lost their jobs already this season and several of them may not coach in the NHL ranks again. However, that certainly won’t be the case for former San Jose Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer, who lost his job four days ago after the team’s poor start to the season.

Regardless, DeBoer has been an excellent coach, who has put up an impressive record of 415-329-111 record throughout 11+ seasons with San Jose, New Jersey and Florida and has taken the Sharks to the playoffs all four years he’s been with the franchise, which included a Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 2015-16.

While many coaches prefer to sit out the remainder of the season and look at their options the following year, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on Hockey Night in Canada Saturday night that the 51-year-old DeBoer is willing to listen to teams if they want to hire him now.

“Sometimes coaches want to take time, maybe the rest of the season before they come back,” Friedman said. “The word is, however, that depending on the situation, Peter DeBoer is willing to listen and will consider coaching this year.”

Of course, there is another likely possibility as The Athletic’s Eric Duhatschek (subscription required) suggests that he could consider joining the Seattle franchise as their future head coach, a similar move that Gerard Gallant did after being fired from Florida and then taking on the expansion Vegas Golden Knights position not long after.

  • Charlie Roumeliotis of NBC Sports writes that Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Adam Boqvist will appear in his 10th game today against the Wild, meaning the team intends to burn the first year of his entry-level contract after he plays the game. With the team opting to keep Boqvist around rather than loan him to Sweden for the World Junior Champsionships, this was the obvious outcome.
  • Sweden has already lost Boqvist and could lose Rasmus Sandin for the World Junior Championships. However, the team has gotten even more bad news as the status of top prospect forward Lucas Raymond is in jeopardy. According to Goteborgs-Posten (translation required), Raymond, considered a top five pick in the 2020 NHL draft (and possibly higher), has been suffering from a viral infection and hasn’t appeared in a game since the end of November and is likely to miss the entire tournament. Raymond has three goals and five points in 16 games in the SHL as a 17-year-old. He also played 10 SHL games as a 16-year-old, scoring two goals.
  • NHL’s John Shannon reports that the NHL are now without two referees as referee Tim Peel fractured his fibula Thursday in Glendale between the Arizona Coyotes and the Chicago Blackhawks. Peel was run into by Jonathan Toews, who was falling and came down on Peel’s leg with his stick. The scribe writes that Peel had surgery, but is likely to miss the entire season. The NHL also lost Jon McIsaac as well, meaning the league will likely try to hire back some retired refs or bring some up from the AHL.

 

Minor Transactions: 12/15/19

After a full slate of game Saturday night, the NHL quiets down on Sunday with just eight teams in action. Regardless, many teams will start making moves before the league’s Holiday Roster Freeze that kicks in on Thursday, Dec. 19. Keep your eyes this transaction page throughout the day to catch every team’s moves:

  • The Carolina Hurricanes announced they have assigned forward Julien Gauthier to the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL. The 22-year old and former first-round pick in 2016 picked up his first career NHL point Saturday in Carolina’s victory over Calgary. Gauthier has fared well in the AHL this season with 10 goals in 22 games after a 27-goal season a year ago. He has now five NHL games to his career.
  • The Montreal Canadiens announced they have recalled center Lukas Vejdemo from the Laval Rocket of the AHL, while re-assigning defenseman Otto Leskinen. Vejdemo is the Rocket’s second-leading scorer with eight goals and 16 points. The 23-year-old is in his second season in North America, having scored 13 goals and 29 points last season and looks to be exceeding that mark. If he can get into a game, it will be his NHL debut. Leskinen made his NHL debut on Dec. 5 and played in five games with Montreal. He failed to record a point in that time, but did contribute 13 hits.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs announced they loaned forward Pontus Aberg and defenseman Martin Marincin to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. While the move could be just a simple paper transaction, it’s also possible the team hopes it can get back forward Trevor Moore, which would require the move.
  • CapFriendly reports that the New Jersey Devils have assigned center Michael McLeod to the Binghamton Devils of the AHL. McLeod had an impressive performance Saturday in the Devils’ victory over Arizona. Playing center for the team for the first time ever, the 21-year-old picked up two assists and a plus-two rating in the game, suggesting he might be ready for more extensive callups at a later time. McLeod has 13 points in 24 games with Binghamton.
  • The Athletic’s Ryan S. Clark reports that the Colorado Avalanche have recalled defenseman Anton Lindholm from the Colorado Eagles of the AHL. Lindholm will fill in for defenseman Cale Makar, who was recently put on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. The 25-year-old Lindholm has appeared in 23 games with the Eagles, scoring one goal and two points.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning announced the have assigned forward Mitchell Stephens to the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. The 22-year-old forward made his NHL debut on Dec. 9 and has appeared in four games. While he didn’t register a point, Stephens was useful in the faceoff circle where he 18-of-26 (69.2 percent). He will return to the Crunch where he had five goals and 10 points this season.
  • The Vancouver Canucks have activated forward Tyler Motte from injured reserve and made space for him by assigning forward Zack MacEwen to the Utica Comets, the team announced. Motte suffered a lower-body injury on Oct. 25 and was expected to be out for four weeks. It’s taken quite a bit longer, but the 24-year-old is expected to join the team. He has only appeared in six games for the Canucks this season with one assist. The 23-year-old MacEwen has appeared in eight games with Vancouver, posting a goal and an assist.
  • As the Ottawa Senators continue to shuffle young players to and from the NHL, the latest move comes with Jonathan Davidsson being returned to AHL Belleville. Davidsson, acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets last season, has played in six games with Ottawa this season, recording just one point. He has four points in eleven games with Belleville and, in just his first season in North American, will benefit more from a large role in the AHL. than his limited action with Ottwa.

Philadelphia Flyers Make Multiple Roster Moves

The Philadelphia Flyers suffered two significant injuries Saturday night when it lost forwards Tyler Pitlick and Scott Laughton to undisclosed injuries. Neither player joined the team on its flight to Winnipeg Saturday night, leaving the team short two forwards. The Flyers announced several moves, which also includes the recall of two AHL forwards, Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Carsen Twarynski from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, both of whom have already left to meet the team in Winnipeg before their game Sunday.

The Flyers also juggled its roster some more, as they moved forward Travis Konecny to injured reserve and also transferred Oskar Lindblom and Samuel Morin to long-term injured reserve.

Konecny is out indefinitely with a concussion he suffered last Saturday against Ottawa on an open-ice hit from Mark Borowiecki. Lindblom was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma Friday and is expected to miss the season, while Morin tore the ACL in his right knee and is also expected to sit out the rest of the season. Those are serious injuries as Konecny has 11 goals and 28 points in 30 games, while Lindblom was having a breakout season with 11 goals and 18 points in 30 games.

The Flyers announced that Laughton went down with a groin injury, while Pitlick suffered a concussion. Both could be out for a little bit,  which is why the team is bringing in Aube-Kubel and Twarynski. This will be Aube-Kubel’s first recall to Philadelphia this season. The 23-year-old played nine games with the Flyers last season, but failed to register a point. He has appeared in 26 games with Lehigh Valley this year, scoring five goals and eight points. Twarynski has already seen 14 games of NHL action this season, scoring one goal. He has two goals and three points in 12 with the Phantoms.

Rasmus Sandin’s Status For WJC In Question

It was considered a likely scenario that the Toronto Maple Leafs intended to send defensive prospect Rasmus Sandin to join Sweden for the World Junior Championship later this month. However, after Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tyson Barrie went down with an injury Saturday, that could change the thinking of the team.

Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston on Hockey Night in Canada late Saturday, suggested that the team’s 2018 first-rounder could get called up to the NHL club depending on the severity of Barrie’s ankle injury that he suffered in Saturday’s victory over Edmonton. Barrie blocked a shot in the first period and immediately went to the dressing room. There has been no word on the status of Barrie, other than Sportnet’s Luke Fox reporting that x-rays were negative on Barrie’s ankle. However, even an injury that might keep the blueliner out for a week could be enough for Toronto to hesitate sending the 19-year-old to Czechoslovakia.

Sandin has been impressive in his second season in the AHL, where he has posted two goals and 12 points in 18 games and would be the likeliest candidate to step in for the Maple Leafs, although the team also has 2017 first-rounder Timothy Liljegren playing well with the Marlies as well.

Not getting Sandin would be another hit for Sweden, who were just informed earlier today that they would not be getting Adam Boqvist, who the Chicago Blackhawks opted to retain in the NHL instead. Sandin played for Sweden at the WJC last season, posting two goals and four points in five games.

What Your Team Is Thankful For: Detroit Red Wings

As the holiday season approaches, PHR will take a look at what teams are thankful for as the season heads past the one-quarter mark. There also might be a few things your team would like down the road. We’ll examine what’s gone well in the early going and what could improve as the season rolls on for the Detroit Red Wings.

What are the Red Wings most thankful for?

Very little has gone right for Detroit this season as the team finds itself dead last in the league, four points out of 30th place and nine points out of 29th place, suggesting the team is likely to land another significant lottery in June. And while none of that is worthy of being thankful for, Detroit’s general manager Steve Yzerman, is eager to complete the team’s rebuild and likely has no qualms about seeing this franchise at the bottom in hopes of completely rebuilding the franchise up. It has plenty of complementary pieces and several players who could be stars, but a picking up a franchise player in a stacked draft might be the most valuable piece to this franchise.

Who are the Red Wings most thankful for?

Anthony Mantha.

Mantha missed eight games with a knee injury, returning today, but continues to be the team’s leading scorer with 12 goals and 23 points this season, which puts him on pace for almost a goal per game. After posting 48 points for the past two seasons, Mantha looks ready for a potential breakout season if he can remain healthy. He is third on the team among forwards in TOI, averaging 18:54 and looks to have taken his game to another level this year.

Considering that Dylan Larkin has seen a slight decline in his play so far, the team should be thankful that Mantha continues to improve season after season.

What would the Red Wings be even more thankful for?

Defense.

Detroit has struggled defensively this season with injuries as the team has been without several of their veteran blueliners for chunks of the season already. Other than Filip Hronek, the defense has looked to be in serious trouble. Danny DeKeyser has missed all but eight games so far this season. Trevor Daley has missed 20 games, Mike Green has missed eight games and isn’t the same player he once was, while Jonathan Ericsson has been waived and used just eight times this season. Even Dennis Cholowski has failed to live up to expectations this year and has been sent to the AHL as well.

The team needs the defense to get healthy and more importantly, they need some of their young blueliners to take that next step and provide some defense to give the team a chance.

What should be on the Red Wings’ Holiday Wish List?

Goaltending.

The teams goaltending has hit some hard times. The star of the team is Jonathan Bernier, who is boasting a 3.34 GAA and a .890 save percentage in 20 appearances. And yes, that’s the best of the bunch. 35-year-old Jimmy Howard, who is currently out with a strained groin, is struggling even worse with a 3.94 GAA and a .887 save percentage in just eight appearances. The team did add Eric Comrie to the team in a trade with Arizona. However, so far there hasn’t been any indication that he’s the answer in two appearances, although it’s still early.

Unfortunately, the team may not find the answer during the holidays. They may be more likely to fix that problem by making a big splash in the free agent market this summer when some interesting names might be available, including Washington’s Braden Holtby, Jacob Markstrom, Robin Lehner amongst others.

Central Notes: Dach, Boqvist, Steen, Wheeler

It looks like Team Canada may have to go without one of their top forwards on their team after all as Chicago Blackhawks center Kirby Dach will not be joining the team in Czechoslovakia for this month’s World Junior Championships. TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that the Blackhawks will not be releasing the 18-year-old.

Dach burned, the third overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, has already burned the first year of his entry-level contract and has already scored five goals and 10 points in 26 games with Chicago. The 6-foot-4 center has been a solid mainstay as a bottom-six center as he gets used to playing with adults in the NHL. The only reason the why Team Canada was holding out hope is that Dach seems to have hit a rookie wall as he hasn’t scored a goal in 12 games.

  • The Athletic’s Scott Powers reports that the Blackhawks haven’t yet made a decision on defensman Adam Boqvist, who is also a candidate to be loaned to Sweden for the World Junior Championships. The eighth overall selection in 2018, Boqvist is a different story as he has appeared in eight games so far and has not burned his entry-level contract yet. The team must decide on whether to keep him on their roster and burn that first year of his contract or whether to send him to the WJC and then perhaps let him develop more in the AHL for the remainder of the year. The team will announce their decision after they have come to one.
  • The St. Louis Blues are expected to get a much-needed addition as the team announced they are expecting forward Alex Steen to return to the lineup tonight. Steen has been out since Nov. 6 with a high ankle sprain and has missed 16 straight games, but should add some depth to the bottom-six. The 35-year-old has yet to score a goal in 17 games with the Blues this season, but should add some experience and defensive acumen to the St. Louis’ lineup.
  • Despite rumors that Winnipeg Jets forward Blake Wheeler was injured after missing practice Saturday, The Athletic’s Murat Ates reports that the Jets forward will play Sunday against the Philadelphia Flyers. The 33-year-old has eight goals and 23 points this season for the Jets.

 

New Jersey Devils Place Louis Domingue On Injured Reserve

Goaltending troubles continue to follow the New Jersey Devils as the team announced they have placed backup goaltender Louis Domingue on injured reserve after suffering a lower-body injury Friday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team has also recalled Evan Cormier from the ECHL to fill Domingue’s place.

The team was hoping for a solid tandem at the start of the year between veteran Cory Schneider and youngster MacKenzie Blackwood. Instead Schneider has been placed on waiver and sent to the Binghamton Devils in the AHL, while Blackwood hasn’t been as sharp as he was a year ago with a 2.93 GAA and a .905 save percentage in 23 appearances. The Devils opted to trade for Domingue from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Nov. 1 for a conditional seventh-round pick. The 27-year-old hasn’t fared much better so far in six appearances, as he has posted just a 4.15 GAA and a .862 save percentage.

Regardless, unless the team can pick up another goaltender soon, the Devils are stuck with Cormier who started the season in the AHL, but was demoted to the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL. With Schneider still struggling in the AHL (he gave up five goals Friday night against Springfield) and the backup there, Gilles Senn, still adjusting to the North American rink-size, the team had to turn to Cormier. In six appearances with Adirondack, Cormier has a 2.71 GAA and a .902 save percentage, but struggled with Binghamton with a 3.77 GAA and a .874 save percentage in seven appearances.
