Snapshots: USA Hockey, Florida-Boston, Hyka
Recently young Colorado prospect Cale Makar turned down the opportunity to head to Pyeongchang with the Canadian Olympic squad, but as Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports, Troy Terry didn’t hesitate. Terry will be part of Team USA at the Games in the middle of another exceptional season at the University of Denver.
Interestingly, Chambers notes that USA Hockey was hesitant to select two players from the same college program meaning Dylan Gambrell—also having an excellent season with DU, scoring 27 points in 22 games—won’t be heading overseas. Gambrell, a second-round pick of the San Jose Sharks has scored at better than a point-per-game pace since he entered the NCAA.
- The Florida Panthers-Boston Bruins game that was cancelled due to inclement weather recently has been rescheduled for April 8th, extending the NHL season by one day. The original schedule had all teams finishing by April 7th, while the playoffs are set to begin on April 11th.
- Tomas Hyka has been added to the AHL All-Star roster in place of Brandon Pirri, an impressive accomplishment for the first-year player. Hyka was signed out of the Czech professional league in the offseason, and has 23 points in 26 AHL contests. He earned an NHL call-up in December, but didn’t get into a game for the Vegas Golden Knights.
Minor Transactions: 01/11/18
Another slow night in the NHL this Thursday as only three games are on the schedule, but as we saw with the Anthony Duclair trade yesterday a move can come at any time. We’ll keep track of all the minor comings and goings around the league right here. Make sure to refresh throughout the day to keep track of your favorite team.
- The Columbus Blue Jackets have swapped goaltenders again, bringing Joonas Korpisalo back up after getting a start in the minor leagues last night. Korpisalo was never in danger of losing his backup role, but the team wanted him to stay fresh. Matiss Kivlenieks, called up in his absence, has been returned to the Cleveland Monsters.
- The Toronto Maple Leafs head into their bye week after a disappointing loss to the Ottawa Senators, and have loaned Travis Dermott and Frederik Gauthier back to the AHL to continue to get into some games. Dermott and Gauthier have made solid impacts on the team since joining recently, but are still young enough to benefit from continued ice time and development. When the Maple Leafs come back in five days, you can bet both players will get the recall.
Minor Transactions: 01/10/17
The NHL world is in a frenzy about offside review calls once again, after the Edmonton Oilers had a goal overturned last night that could have changed the outcome of the game. Connor McDavid doesn’t like the review system, and he’s not alone. Still, life must go on around the league and we’ll keep track of all the minor moves right here.
- The Nashville Predators have flipped Juuse Saros and Anders Lindback once again, as the likely will throughout the team’s bye week. The team has done this several times throughout the year to get Saros more playing time and keep him fresh for a potential run should Pekka Rinne go down to injury.
- Ottawa has brought back Filip Chlapik from the AHL according to the minor league’s transaction board. The young forward played six games with the Senators earlier this year, but is still looking for his first NHL goal. He’ll get into the lineup tonight with Bobby Ryan out due to injury.
- The St. Louis Blues have sent Vince Dunn and Ivan Barbashev to the Chicago Wolves during their bye week, while also assigning Tage Thompson to San Antonio. The Blues won’t be back in action until they take on the Maple Leafs on January 16th.
- The Capitals have once again sent Madison Bowey and Jakub Vrana to Hershey of the AHL, via the AHL’s transactions page. This isn’t a sign that the team isn’t pleased with their play but rather a way to save a little bit of money on the cap. With Washington in action tomorrow, they’ll likely be recalled for that game.
Minor Transactions: 01/08/18
Teams around the NHL are beginning their mandated bye weeks, marking an unofficial midpoint of the season. With that, there is only a single game on tap for tonight, between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets. That won’t stop clubs from making minor moves to improve, and we’ll have all the recalls and reassignments right here.
- The Buffalo Sabres have recalled young defenseman Brendan Guhle and goaltender Linus Ullmark, an interesting move to say the least. The team was already at 23 players on the roster, meaning a corresponding move—be it injured reserve, waivers or loans—will be sure to follow shortly. Victor Antipin and Robin Lehner were both absent from practice due to minor ailments, and it’s not clear if they’ll miss any game action.
- The Chicago Blackhawks are giving Tomas Jurco another shot, recalling the forward while sending John Hayden back to the minor leagues. Jurco has played all season for the Rockford IceHogs, scoring 25 points in 36 games. The 25-year old was acquired from the Detroit Red Wings last season but recorded just one point in his 13 games with the Blackhawks.
- Vinni Lettieri is on his way back to the minor leagues, reassigned by the New York Rangers. Lettieri scored two points in three games, but with the Rangers on their bye week will continue to see game action back with the Hartford Wolf Pack. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him back up before Saturday’s game against the Islanders.
- The St. Louis Blues have activated Vince Dunn from injured reserve, sending Jake Walman back to the AHL. Dunn was only out with the flu, and had his IR stint backdated to allow him to return so quickly. Walman, who still didn’t get into his first NHL game, will have to wait for another opportunity.
- Lee Stempniak has been activated off injured reserve for the Carolina Hurricanes, meaning Lucas Wallmark is heading back to the AHL. Wallmark scored his first NHL goal on December 30th, but will now return to the Charlotte Checkers where he 23 points in 20 games this season.
- Brendan Lemieux is back up with the Winnipeg Jets as Adam Lowry deals with an upper-body injury, meaning Tucker Poolman is headed back to the AHL. Poolman has looked sharp in limited minutes for the Jets, but with Dustin Byfuglien healthy and back in the lineup the team has their six defensemen pretty much set in stone. Lemieux on the other hand will try to force his way into the lineup after 24 points in 24 games for the Manitoba Moose this year.
Minor Transactions — 1/7/18
After a nine-game schedule Saturday, the NHL has another busy day of action today as 20 teams will be on the ice. There have already been a few moves made and many more are likely:
- The Winnipeg Jets have activated veteran defenseman Tobias Enstrom off of injured reserve. The 33-year-old went down with a lower-body injury back on Nov. 18 and was deemed out for eight weeks. Slightly ahead of schedule, the defensive-minded Enstrom should improve the defensive play of Winnipeg, especially since they also just got back defenseman Dustin Byfuglien five days ago.
- The Colorado Avalanche announced they have made a three moves this morning, as defenseman Andrei Mironov and winger A.J. Greer and goaltender Andrew Hammond have all been assigned to the San Antonio Rampage. It’s likely that all three are being sent down to get regular playing time while the Avalanche begin their five-day bye week. The Avalanche don’t play again until next Saturday.
- After sending this group down one day ago, the Columbus Blue Jackets recalled center Zac Dalpe, defenseman Dean Kukan and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo, while returning goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks to the Cleveland Monsters. All were sent down to get in some playing time in the AHL in Cleveland’s 4-3 shootout loss to Rockford. Dalpe scored a goal, Kukan added an assist and Korpisalo stopped 37 shots on goal.
- The Detroit Red Wings announced they have recalled goaltender Jared Coreau from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. He will serve as the emergency backup for Petr Mrazek after it was reported Saturday that starter Jimmy Howard will sit out today’s game with a lower-body injury. Coreau played 14 games for the Red Wings last year, but hasn’t had as good of a season in Grand Rapids as he did a year ago. The 26-year-old netminder has a 2.77 GAA in 25 games so far this year with the Griffins. It will likely be a one-game stint for Coreau as the Red Wings go on a bye week and won’t play again until next Saturday.
- The Vancouver Canucks announced that they have reassigned winger Reid Boucher to the Utica Comets today. Boucher has been with the team since Dec. 13, but has appeared in just three games with the team. He has been a healthy scratch in five of the team’s past six games. The 24-year-old returns to Utica where he has 13 goals and 25 points this year in 25 games.
- After sending Marcus Sorensen down Friday night, the San Jose Sharks have recalled the young forward back to the team, according to CapFriendly. Sorensen has three goals in 13 games with the Sharks. Defenseman Dylan DeMelo was placed on IR to make room for Sorenson on the roster.
- The Los Angeles Kings have sent Jonny Brodzinski and Kevin Gravel to the minor leagues after losing yesterday to the Predators. The Kings are headed into their bye week, and won’t play again until next Saturday night.
- Following their game this afternoon, the Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have returned winger Tyrell Goulbourne to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He played in two games while on recall, averaging 5:34 per game. The Flyers are also heading into their bye week and could potentially bring Goulbourne back up next weekend.
- The New York Islanders also made several roster moves following their matinee against the Devils. Forwards Anthony Beauvillier and Tanner Fritz as well as defenseman Sebastian Aho have all been sent down to Bridgeport. There is a good chance some of them will be recalled following the bye week.
Toronto Maple Leafs Recall Travis Dermott
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been searching for help on defense this season, tenuously linked to players like Erik Gudbranson and Ian Cole in trade rumors. Now, some of that help may come from inside the organization as the team has recalled Travis Dermott from the AHL, while sending Martin Marincin back down. Should he get into the lineup, it would mark the NHL debut for Dermott, a second-round pick of the Maple Leafs in 2015.
Playing in all situation for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, Dermott has recorded 17 points on the season including six assists in his last two games. He was also just named to the AHL All-Star team, along with teammate Kasperi Kapanen. The defenseman turned 21 years old just before the Christmas break, and had been pushing for a spot in the NHL for some time. A minor injury to Roman Polak last night, and the continued struggles of Marincin and Connor Carrick on the bottom pairing necessitated a change for the Maple Leafs as they continue to deal with the absence of Nikita Zaitsev.
Still, Toronto seems ripe for a defensive addition at some point. Even if Dermott makes an impact right away, the team could use someone to help on the penalty kill and provide some depth for a potential playoff run. Since Marincin once again did not stick with the NHL club, one has to wonder whether he’s destined for non-qualification in the summer.
Minor Transactions: 01/05/18
Last night was filled to the brim with hockey all across North America, with a dozen games in the NHL and a World Junior semi-final. There were some shocking finishes, with the Coyotes taking down the Predators and Canadiens icing the Lightning. Now, as we head into another weekend full of hockey, teams will be making minor changes to their rosters and we’ll keep track of everything right here.
- The Buffalo Sabres have sent Taylor Fedun back to the minor leagues, meaning he must be healthy enough to get back on the ice. Fedun hasn’t played since November due to a foot injury, and has just seven games in the NHL this year. The 29-year old is ticketed for the AHL until another few spots open up on the Buffalo blueline.
- Zac Dalpe and Dean Kukan are on their way back to the AHL again, another cap-saving measure for the Columbus Blue Jackets as they await their next game on Sunday. Columbus has been sending the pair down to get into some game action between Blue Jackets matches, allowing them to also bank some cap space for any potential moves at the deadline.
- Filip Chlapik has been reassigned to the Belleville Senators of the AHL, ending his short stint in Ottawa. The NHL Senators are getting Zack Smith back into the lineup tonight, and Chlapik needs to continue to play for his development. The 20-year old recorded one point, but is still looking for his first NHL goal.
- The St. Louis Blues have activated Samuel Blais from injured reserve and sent him to the minor leagues. Blais had been dealing with a lower body injury and has played just 22 games this season split between the Blues and San Antonio Rampage. The sixth-round pick will have to prove he’s back to full strength before getting another chance with the big club, who still haven’t found their optimal mix of forwards for the stretch run.
- After only two days on injured reserve, Marcus Kruger has been activated by the Carolina Hurricanes. Kruger’s IR stint could be retroactive to the last game he played on December 27th, but it will still mean and end to Aleksi Saarela’s first NHL call-up. Saarela didn’t get into a game, meaning he’ll have to wait for another chance to make his NHL debut.
- The Vegas Golden Knights have moved Jon Merrill to injured reserve with an undisclosed injury, making room for Luca Sbisa to be activated. Sbisa is expected to be in the lineup tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks, while it’s not clear how long Merrill will be out.
- The Arizona Coyotes have sent both Kyle Capobianco and Lawson Crouse to the minor leagues, with no corresponding moves given. The Coyotes don’t play until tomorrow night, and could activate Brad Richardson for the game after he returned to practice.
- The Columbus Blue Jackets have also sent goaltender Joonas Korpisalo to the minor leagues to get a start, recalling Matiss Kivlenieks to stay complient in the NHL. Korpisalo will get into a game for the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters to stay sharp, but should be recalled later this weekend.
Snapshots: Hoffman, Andersen, Carrier, AHL
The Ottawa Senators already have one offer in hand for forward Mike Hoffman according to Darren Dreger of TSN, but it’s not enough to pry him away. The offer is for “futures” as Dreger calls them, and likely made up of a draft pick and prospect. It’s not clear which team has offered it, what prospect is involved or what round the pick would be from.
The idea that the Senators wouldn’t sell Hoffman for just a prospect and picks makes sense, as they aren’t looking to completely tear it down. This is a team that went out and acquired Matt Duchene earlier this year, and may only have one more year with Erik Karlsson under contract. More likely, the Senators would be looking for young roster players that can make an impact next season in any deal, though they haven’t come out and said that as of yet.
- Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen has been fined $2,000 by the league for diving, after an incident in the New Year’s Eve game against the Vegas Golden Knights. Andersen had previously been warned by the league for a play against Carolina, but will now face a monetary penalty and be watched more closely.
- William Carrier has been activated by the Vegas Golden Knights and is expected to be back in the lineup tonight, as Pierre-Edouard Bellemare is away from the team for the birth of his first child. Carrier hasn’t played since November 25th, and has just two points on the season.
- The AHL announced their All-Star rosters, including several players who’ve spent time or are currently in the NHL like Vinnie Hinostroza. The rosters are filled with an interesting mix of prospects and veterans, and should be a good performance for fans. The league will hold its skills competition on January 28th, and play the All-Star Classic on January 29th in Utica.
Boston Bruins Assign Anders Bjork To AHL
In a move that seemed inevitable, the Boston Bruins have sent rookie Anders Bjork to the minor leagues. Bjork came into the season with high expectations after signing following a huge season at Notre Dame, but has seen his role on the team reduced dramatically of late, even spending several games as a healthy scratch over the last month. Boston meanwhile is one of the hottest teams in the league, and has done it without much contribution from Bjork, playing him fewer than 11 minutes in seven of his last eight appearances.
A stint in the AHL may be the best thing for the 21-year old, who came out firing this season with seven points in his first nine games, but registered just five—including just one goal—in the following 20. Bjork was one of just four waiver-exempt forwards on the team, and had clearly the smallest role out of the group. Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk have made immediate impacts offensively with 28 and 19 points respectively, while the older Sean Kuraly is a key penalty killer for the Bruins.
Even if Bjork does spend substantial time in the minor leagues, his future still looks bright in Boston. After being selected 146th-overall in 2014, he carved out an impressive college career that ended with his 52-point season for Notre Dame last year. Bjork was the best forward on that team, which also included Montreal prospect Jake Evans, who could be headed to Pyeongchang for the Winter Olympics as a part of Team Canada. Bjork will try to find that scoring touch with the Providence Bruins, who have three games in three nights this weekend, starting with a matchup against Hartford on Friday night.

- The Columbus Blue Jackets have sent Zac Dalpe and Dean Kukan back to the minor leagues, after neither played in their game last night. The Blue Jackets have Zach Werenski back on defense, meaning at least one of their emergency call-ups would need to go back. Sonny Milano and Jordan Schroeder remain, called up to replace Cam Atkinson and Alexander Wennberg. Ryan Murray is also close to a return, and would need a roster spot to be activated from injured reserve. [Update: Kukan was actually recalled by the club later in the day]
- Julian Melchiori has been sent to the AHL by the Winnipeg Jets, after Dustin Byfuglien was activated from injured reserve yesterday. Melchiori has been with the club since mid-December, but never did get into a game. The 26-year old has 12 points in 26 games for the Manitoba Moose this season.
- The Montreal Canadiens have sent Brett Lernout back to the minor leagues after sitting out last night’s game against the San Jose Sharks. Lernout has played three games with the Canadiens this year, but hasn’t yet made much of an impact. The 22-year old could be back up as soon as tomorrow, as this move leaves Montreal with just six healthy defensemen on the roster.
- While Semyon Varlamov deals with a minor injury, the Colorado Avalanche have recalled Andrew Hammond from the Belleville Senators. Hammond was included as part of the Matt Duchene deal as a salary dump from the Ottawa Senators, and had been still playing on loan in their minor league system. He’ll now be asked to back up Jonathan Bernier for the time being, who will likely see most of the work until Varlamov is ready to return.
- Marcus Kruger has been placed on injured reserve, allowing the Carolina Hurricanes to recall Aleksi Saarela from the minor leagues. Saarela is in his first full season in North America after coming over from Finland last year, and could make his NHL debut if he were to get into a game. The 20-year old was originally drafted by the New York Rangers, but traded as part of the package for Eric Staal in 2016.
- The Philadelphia Flyers have recalled Tyrell Goulbourne from the AHL, marking the first time he’ll spend any time with the NHL club. Goulbourne was drafted in the third round in 2013, and is known more for his physicality than his offense. In 36 games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms this season, the 23-year old forward has 11 points.
