Philadelphia Flyers Recall Cam York

March 9, 2022 at 10:28 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The Philadelphia Flyers, last in the Metropolitan Division and winners of just three games in their last ten, have recalled top prospect Cam York from the minor leagues. York last played in the NHL more than a month ago, going back to the AHL on February 2. He’s played 13 games since then for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, recording three points.

The interesting part about a York recall, other than the obvious excitement that comes with a top prospect, is the situation that Philadelphia finds themselves in when it comes to the trade deadline. Five of the seven other defensemen on the Philadelphia roster are pending unrestricted free agents. Rasmus Ristolainen, Justin Braun, Keith Yandle, Kevin Connauton, and Nick Seeler are all on expiring contracts, suggesting they could be moved at some point if not in the team’s future plans.

Philadelphia has six games left before the March 21 trade deadline, meaning decisions on those players will have to come soon. York’s return to the NHL squad could simply be a chance for him to get another opportunity, or it could be the team preparing for life after some incoming moves. Either way, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to recall him if he’s not going to play–the Phantoms have a three-in-three this weekend that he could have taken part in–so expect York to enter the lineup in one way or another.

AHL Shuffle: 03/09/22

March 9, 2022 at 9:05 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Just two games in the NHL this evening, though that does include a matchup between Connor McDavid and Alex Ovechkin. The Edmonton Oilers and Washington Capitals will do battle in a game of two teams headed in opposite directions. The Oilers have lost three in a row and are running the risk of falling out of the Pacific Division playoff race, while the Capitals stormed back yesterday to take their third in a row. As they and others prepare for action, we’ll keep track of all the minor league shuffling.

Atlantic Division

  • The Montreal Canadiens have sent down defenseman Corey Schueneman to the AHL’s Laval Rocket. Schueneman, 26, is an undrafted player who impressed in brief NHL action under coach Martin St. Louis and is now headed back to Laval where he has 10 points in 27 games.

Metropolitan Division

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have sent Kasper Bjorkqvist back to the AHL, without him actually getting into a game during this recall. The 24-year-old forward has played in six games this season, all of them coming back in January, and has a single goal.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled goaltender Alex Lyon from the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. Lyon was sent down on Monday and returns to the Hurricanes roster sporting a .908 save percentage in his 2 NHL appearances this season.

Central Division

  • Nathan Beaulieu has been moved to long-term injured reserve, with the Winnipeg Jets recalling Ville Heinola in his place. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s getting into the lineup though, as Heinola figures to be the seventh defenseman on the upcoming road trip (at least to start).

Pacific Division

  • The Los Angeles Kings have moved Mikey Anderson to injured reserve, recalling Jordan Spence to take his place on the roster. Spence, 21, has been lighting up the minor leagues in his first year of professional hockey, scoring 42 points in 46 games for the Ontario Reign. The fourth-round pick has a very interesting background, including being born in Australia and learning to play hockey in Japan before eventually returning to Canada at 13, the country he competes for internationally.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have sent Brendan Guhle to the AHL, as Josh Manson continues to get closer to returning and after the team claimed Andrej Sustr off waivers. Guhle, 24, hasn’t even played in an NHL game this season, despite being up with the team on several occasions.
  • The Edmonton Oilers have activated Zack Kassian off of long-term injured reserve and then added Kyle Turris to the list in a corresponding move, according to Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic. Kassian has 14 points in 35 games this year and returns to an Oilers lineup that he has featured in for seven seasons. Turris, 32, was previously mentioned as a trade candidate and has only 4 points in 23 games for the Oilers this season.

Lias Andersson Recalled From Conditioning Loan

March 8, 2022 at 11:20 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 12 Comments

March 8: After four excellent games with the Reign, Andersson has been recalled from his conditioning loan and activated from injured reserve. The young forward scored six goals in those four games, actually matching his previous minor league high in just a week’s time. To make room on the Kings’ active roster, Brendan Lemieux has been moved to injured reserve, retroactive to March 4.

March 2: Los Angeles Kings forward Lias Andersson has been sent to the AHL on a conditioning loan, suggesting he is nearing a return from the undisclosed injury that has kept him out for nearly two months.

The loan is of the long-term injury variety, meaning he does not need to be activated before sending him down and he will still not appear on the Kings’ roster while he plays in the minor leagues. He hasn’t played an NHL game since January 8 and has just 13 appearances this season.

Last season, when Andersson spent some time in the AHL, he dominated the competition, scoring 17 points in 15 games for the Ontario Reign. That success hasn’t carried over to the Kings this year though, as the 2017 seventh-overall pick still can’t seem to find any consistency at the NHL level. In those 13 appearances this season, he has just a single point, taking his career total to 16 in 102 games.

An arbitration-eligible restricted free agent at the end of the season, Andersson is getting dangerously close to going unqualified, given he will be 24 in October and has shown very rare flashes of NHL-quality play to this point. Perhaps the Kings believe he can still take that next step, but a good stretch run this season would be huge for the future of his professional career in North America.

AHL Shuffle: 03/08/22

March 8, 2022 at 9:51 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It’s an extremely busy Tuesday in the NHL, with 11 games on the docket. That includes a big eastern matchup between the Florida Panthers and Pittsburgh Penguins, and an incredibly important match between the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators. Those two central teams are neck and neck in the playoff race, meaning any head-to-head action is a huge opportunity to gain ground. As those teams and others prepare for action, we’ll keep track of all the minor league shuffling.

Atlantic Division

  • The Ottawa Senators have reassigned Dillon Heatherington to the AHL, after he failed to get into any games on this most recent recall. The veteran minor league defenseman last played for Ottawa in December but continues to be a depth piece that’s recalled as injury insurance. He has zero points in nine NHL games this season.
  • The Florida Panthers have sent Spencer Knight back to the AHL, after he stopped 29 of 30 shots yesterday against the Buffalo Sabres for his tenth win of the season. Knight continues to bounce up and down in order to get the most playing time possible, while the Panthers rely on Sergei Bobrovsky for the vast majority of the NHL action. Jonas Johansson, technically the NHL backup, has seen just a single game since being acquired in December.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs returned Mac Hollowell to the minor leagues today, as they welcomed Rasmus Sandin back to the ice after dealing with an illness. It’s unlikely Sandin plays tonight, though with him at least a possibility the team no longer needed Hollowell on the NHL roster.

Metropolitan Division

Central Division

  • The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled Alec Regula to the NHL once again, and he was skating on the third pairing at practice according to Charlie Roumeliotis of NBCS Chicago. The 21-year-old defenseman has played in four games for the Blackhawks this season and is still looking for his first NHL point.
  • The Dallas Stars have sent Marian Studenic to the AHL on a conditioning assignment, something that’s understandable given he hasn’t played since the Stars claimed him off waivers last month. Studenic has appeared in 17 games this season, all with the New Jersey Devils, and has one goal.
  • Per The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford, the St. Louis Blues have recalled forward Alexey Toropchenko from the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds (tweet). The forward has zero points in five games in the NHL this season, but does have a solid 20 points in 42 games at the AHL level.

Pacific Division

  • The San Jose Sharks have reassigned Jasper Weatherby and Santeri Hatakka to the AHL, suggesting that some players–particularly Erik Karlsson—could be available to play in the coming days. Weatherby, meanwhile, has spent most of the season with the Sharks, playing in 45 games so far and racking up ten points. The 24-year-old forward is still waiver-exempt, meaning he can move up and down without issue whenever the team needs him again.
  • Earlier today, the Edmonton Oilers sent defenseman Markus Niemelainen down to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors. The 23-year-old has split time between the NHL and AHL this season, tallying 7 points in 23 games at the AHL level and just one assist in 20 games at the NHL level.

Columbus Blue Jackets Sign Billy Sweezey

March 7, 2022 at 2:18 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

All the hard work for Billy Sweezey has finally resulted in an NHL contract. The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed the undrafted defenseman to a two-year, two-way contract that will kick in for the 2022-23 season. Sweezey is currently playing for the Cleveland Monsters on an AHL contract.

In 2015-16, the 6’2″ Sweezey was an overage player for the USHL’s Chicago Steel, where he racked up 131 penalty minutes in 55 games, mostly there for his size and toughness. He took his talents to Yale after that and played four years, never scoring more than one goal in a single season. He’d leave college in 2020 with just three goals and 29 points in 127 games. Last season he played with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, where he once again was just a depth player scratching and clawing for playing time.

This year with Cleveland, that’s changed, at least somewhat. Sweezey, now 26, has four goals and ten points in 45 games to go along with 68 penalty minutes as one of the toughest defenders in the league. Playing regular minutes, his size, strength, and physicality have now made him a legitimate call-up option for the Blue Jackets, though he won’t be eligible until next season.

A deal like this certainly isn’t a franchise-altering move, but it does reinforce that players can work their way up the Blue Jackets depth chart if they work hard enough. That helps encourage other undrafted talents to join the organization and meanwhile, provides some extra defensive depth for the NHL club.

Tyson Barrie Placed On Injured Reserve; Stuart Skinner Recalled

March 7, 2022 at 10:57 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Edmonton Oilers have officially recalled Stuart Skinner from the AHL, as Mike Smith continues to deal with an illness. To make room, Tyson Barrie has been placed on injured reserve.

Barrie, 30, was injured in a game earlier this month against the Chicago Blackhawks and was recently listed as “day-to-day” by head coach Jay Woodcroft. Given that his placement on IR is retroactive to March 5 and he has to miss at least seven days, he’ll miss at least the next few games while he recovers.

Skinner meanwhile is set to serve as the backup tonight behind Mikko Koskinen, though many believe he should be getting a chance to play for the Oilers given their goaltending issues. The 23-year-old goaltender has a .913 save percentage in 13 appearances this season, including a 20-save shutout in his most recent game–almost a month ago against the San Jose Sharks.

Since then, he’s been playing in the minor leagues where he continues to find success. In his most recent game with the Bakersfield Condors, Skinner stopped 26 of 27 shots to earn an overtime victory against the Stockton Heat. Overall, he has a .919 save percentage in the AHL this season.

AHL Shuffle: 03/07/22

March 7, 2022 at 10:16 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Five games grace the NHL schedule this evening, as we get closer and closer to the March 21 trade deadline. Sam Reinhart will return to Buffalo to take on his old team as a member of the Florida Panthers and in the midst of a career year. With 18 goals and 52 points in 52 games, he’s on the verge of recording his first point-per-game campaign, while helping the Panthers become one of the most feared offensive juggernauts in the NHL. As they and other teams prepare for action, we’ll keep track of all the day’s minor league shuffling.

Atlantic Division

  • The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Joe Veleno, with the team back in action tomorrow night. The 22-year-old rookie has five goals and ten points in 40 appearances for Detroit this season, but still isn’t quite living up to the hype that made him the 30th overall pick in 2018. To make room, the team has moved Carter Rowney to injured reserve.

Metropolitan Division

  • The New York Islanders have recalled Otto Koivula from the AHL, his third transaction in just a few days. The 23-year-old forward has played four games for New York this season but is still looking for his first NHL goal.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have returned Jean-Francois Berube to the minor leagues, meaning their goaltending situation is likely clearing up in the NHL. Berube, hadn’t played since the 2017-18 season before his recent stint with Columbus, making his 3-1 record and .924 save percentage even more remarkable.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have activated Louis Domingue from injured reserve, but he’s headed back to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The third-string goaltender has played in just one game for Pittsburgh this season, stopping 40 of 41 shots for a win against the San Jose Sharks partway through January.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes have assigned Alex Lyon to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. Lyon, 29, has played in 23 games for the Wolves this season and has a .911 save percentage. He has also appeared in 2 games for the Hurricanes and owns a .908 save percentage with the team.

Central Division

  • The St. Louis Blues have recalled Mackenzie MacEachern and Alexey Toropchenko from the AHL, while reassigning Dakota Joshua and Klim Kostin. The Blues have lost three in a row–two of those against teams well out of the playoff race–and obviously are looking for a change upfront. MacEachern, 27, has yet to play at the NHL level this season but does have over 100 games of experience with the Blues.
  • The Minnesota Wild have activated Jordan Greenway off of injured reserve, and reassigned Mason Shaw to the AHL’s Iowa Wild in a corresponding move, Michael Russo of the Athletic reported. Greenway had been suffering from an upper-body injury, and has 14 points in 41 games this season. Mason Shaw, a 2017 4th round pick, has 33 points in 41 AHL games this season and has played in 3 NHL games for the Wild.

Pacific Division

  • The Vancouver Canucks have recalled Sheldon Rempal from the AHL, loaning Phil Di Giuseppe down in his place. Di Giuseppe was recalled last month but didn’t actually get into a game at the NHL level, meaning he still has yet to make his Canucks debut. In the AHL though, the 28-year-old has 32 points in 35 games, the best offensive season of his career.
  • Lukas Dostal has been returned to the AHL, this time without seeing any action with the Anaheim Ducks. The young netminder has appeared three times this season, posting a .929 save percentage and securing his first NHL win.

AHL Shuffle: 03/06/22

March 6, 2022 at 2:00 pm CDT | by John Gilroy Leave a Comment

An intriguing Sunday of NHL hockey is already underway, including a Stanley Cup Final rematch that sees the Chicago Blackhawks host the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Seattle Kraken making their first trip to Carolina, and playoff implications already, as the Minnesota Wild, in third place in the Central Division with 67 points, host the Dallas Stars, who are holding onto the second Wild Card in the Western Conference with 65 points. Despite all the action, there are still plenty of transactions happening throughout the NHL and AHL today:

Metropolitan

Atlantic

  • To make room for today’s waiver claim in Olli Juolevi, the Detroit Red Wings have sent down center Joe Veleno to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. Veleno, the 30th overall pick in the 2018 NHL draft, has been productive at the AHL level this season with 10 points in 11 games. At the NHL level, though, he has had to adapt to a different role, and has 10 points in 40 games for the big club.
  • The Florida Panthers have recalled goalie Spencer Knight to the NHL from the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. Knight, 20, is one of the top goalie prospects in hockey but has struggled so far this season with the Panthers, with a .898 save percentage in 18 starts. He has been better at the AHL level in Charlotte, though, with a .917 in 10 starts, and clearly his performance was enough to motivate the Panthers to bring him back up for another run as Sergei Bobrovsky’s backup.
  • The Ottawa Senators have recalled goalie Filip Gustavsson from the AHL’s Belleville Senators. Gustavsson has split time this season between Ottawa and Belleville. He has 13 NHL starts and a .896 save percentage in Ottawa, and 10 starts in Belleville where he has posted a .905 save percentage.

Pacific

  • The San Jose Sharks announced that they have placed goaltender James Reimer on IR. In a corresponding move, they have recalled defenseman Santeri Hatakka from the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. Reimer had been having a solid season for the Sharks, posting a 2.84 goals against average and .916 over 34 games in net this season. Meanwhile, Hatakka will return to the NHL for the third time this season. The defenseman tallied just one assist in seven games for the Sharks this season, last playing November 18th against St. Louis. Hatakka was recalled for three days last week, but did not play. The 21-year-old has also suited up for 21 games for the Barracuda this season, recording one goal and three assists.
  • The Vancouver Canucks have announced that they have assigned winger Phillip Di Giuseppe to the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. Di Giuseppe has yet to get into a game with the Canucks this season after an energetic 2020-2021 campaign with the New York Rangers. He has been a crucial player in Abbotsford, though, with 11 goals and 32 points in 35 games.
  • Edmonton Oilers interim head coach Jay Woodcroft has said, per Daniel Nugent-Bowman of the Athletic, that goalie Stuart Skinner will be recalled from the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors because incumbent starter Mike Smith is dealing with an illness. Skinner, 23, has been a lonely bright spot in net for the Oilers this season, with a .913 save percentage in 13 games played. Skinner also owns a .919 save percentage at the AHL level.
  • The Anaheim Ducks announced that they have recalled goaltender Lukas Dostal from San Diego of the AHL.  The 21-year-old made his NHL debut back in January but has been in the minors for the last seven weeks and last week, had a 51-save performance while scoring his first career professional goal.  Dostal will take the place of John Gibson who is out of the lineup due to an upper-body injury.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights announced the recall of defenseman Daniil Miromanov from AHL Henderson.  The 24-year-old has been up and down several times this season and has seven NHL games under his belt where he has an assist in just over ten minutes of playing time per game.  Miromanov is in for Brayden McNabb who has been placed on injured reserve.

Snapshots: KHL Departures, AHL Signings, NHL Trade Market

March 5, 2022 at 12:53 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 2 Comments

Amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the exodus in the KHL continues. While many North American players had already left their respective Russia-based club and two non-Russian teams left the league altogether, perhaps the largest blow yet occurred Friday as European players across the KHL left their teams en masse. The move takes place as the Gagarin Cup playoffs are underway.

The Eastern Conference first round match-up between Salavat Yulaev Ufa and Sibir Novosibirsk will look decidedly different moving forward. Ufa, the No. 3 seed in the conference, announced that all of their import players have left the team. This includes names familiar to NHL fans like Markus Granlund, Teemu Hartikainen, and Philip Larsen. Granlund and fellow departure Sakari Manninen led the club in scoring this season. Novosibirsk revealed that a pair of former NHLers had left their ranks as well in goaltender Harri Sateri and defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka. Leading scorer Nick Shore had already left the team and is now joined by the starting goaltender and arguably their best defender. Perennial favorite CSKA Moscow is not immune to this movement; the team announced that they have lost recent NHL contributors Joakim Nordstrom and Lucas Wallmark, both of whom served in top-six roles. Finally, regular season champion Metallurg Magnitogorsk may have lost their title hopes with the departure of starting goaltender Juho Olkinuora. The former AHLer and University of Denver standout was among the best keepers in the KHL this season. This is not the extent of the departures of foreign players, nor will it be the last.

  • There has been a flurry of activity in the AHL of late, headlined by an extension for veteran forward Tanner Fritz. The Hartford Wolf Pack announced that their plus/minus leader has inked a new contract for the 2022-23 season. Fritz, 30, has played his pro career almost exclusively in New York and Connecticut, spending five years with the New York Islanders and their affiliate in Bridgeport before moving to Hartford this season. While appreciative of a new contract, Fritz is probably eyeing a contract with the New York Rangers next, if possible. In Toronto, the Marlies have elevated NHL veteran Joseph Blandisi from a PTO to a contract for the remainder of the season. Blandisi, 27, has been a near point-per-game player for the Marlies this season and is well-deserving of a real contract. Down in Charlotte, the Checkers are bringing in some fresh blood from the junior ranks. Defenseman Robert Calisti of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and forward Xavier Cormier of the QMJHL’s Rimouski Oceanic have each signed two-year contracts with the club, beginning next season. The two combined for 72 points in 81 games this season and the Checkers hope that production translates to the pros.
  • If it seems like all the action right now is outside of the NHL, while the trade market remains all bark and no bite, it’s true. Despite the usual speculation, there have been nearly no early moves made this season with the deadline just over two weeks away. Outside of Tyler Toffoli and Nick Ritchie/Ilya Lyubushkin, the only trades made of late have included future considerations, seventh-round picks, and third-string goaltenders. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the holdup on the market comes from the buyers rather than the sellers. He believes that the salary cap concerns, especially from those teams managing long-term injuries, is slowing deal-making. However, there may be hope that things will pick up soon, as LeBrun notes that sellers are getting antsy. Contenders with cap space, such as the Predators, Rangers, Wild, and Bruins, could be the beneficiaries if other cap-strapped teams continue to drag their feet.

AHL Shuffle: 03/05/22

March 5, 2022 at 10:45 am CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

It is a busy Saturday across the NHL with 10 games on the docket over the course of 12+ hours. The St. Louis Blues and New York Islanders kick things off at 11:30am CT, followed by at least one game starting nearly every hour from 2:00pm CT until the Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche square off in one of the most highly-anticipated match-ups of the season thus far at 9:00pm CT. If all of these teams aren’t too busy preparing and the other dozen not playing aren’t too busy themselves watching all the action, perhaps we will see some roster movement today.

Atlantic Division

Metropolitan Division

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have demoted defenseman Jake Christiansen, a player who has been up and down regularly this season. The team announced that Christiansen has been reassigned to the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters, where he has played in 39 games this year. While he has only suited up for four with the Blue Jackets, Christiansen has spent considerable time on the NHL roster.
  • Kevin Hayes is back with the Philadelphia Flyers. The veteran center has been out since mid-January after undergoing surgery and his recovery exceeded the expected three-to-four week projection. However, he has finally been activated from the injured reserve. Philadelphia may not have many playoff hopes left this season, but will be glad to have a locker room leader back. The timing is poor for Wade Allison, who has also been activated from the IR but with Hayes taking the open NHL roster spot, Allison will head to the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Allison suffered a knee injury in his season debut back in January and has been out ever since, but certainly hoped to return to the Flyers lineup after playing in 14 games as a rookie last season.
  • The New York Islanders recalled two players in time for their game against the St. Louis Blues earlier today, a 2-1 win for New York. Forward Otto Koivula was recalled from Bridgeport and played in the game for the Islanders, who were without forwards Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee. This was just Kiovula’s fourth game of the season, last playing December 2nd for the Islanders. Defenseman Parker Wotherspoon was also recalled from Bridgeport, but was immediately sent back down after the game. Wotherspoon has yet to make his NHL debut, but has been a solid contributor for Bridgeport the past few seasons.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes recalled goaltender Alex Lyon from the AHL’s Chicago Wolves on an emergency basis. The 29-year-old Lyon has only played in two games this year for Carolina, but has had an impressive 23 games in the AHL, carrying a 2.14 goals against average and .911 save percentage. Lyon’s emergency recall suggests that one of Antti Raanta or Frederik Andersen are unable to go for Carolina tomorrow night.

Central Division

Pacific Division

  • The Edmonton Oilers recalled defenseman Philip Broberg from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL. Broberg was immediately inserted into the Oilers lineup as they square off against the Montreal Canadiens at home. The 20-year-old Broberg has just one point in 17 games this season for Edmonton, but has excelled in the AHL, tallying 19 points in 27 games.
