Minor Transactions: 3/6/25

With less than 24 hours remaining until the trade deadline, a few teams are making minor roster moves for several reasons. Whether to accrue a few cap dollars before tomorrow’s deadline or to ensure certain players are eligible for the Calder Cup playoffs, there will be plenty of movement between the NHL and AHL before tomorrow afternoon.

  • According to the AHL transactions page, the Chicago Blackhawks have reassigned forward Andreas Athanasiou to their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. Despite a disappointing season, the IceHogs are competing for a playoff spot in the AHL’s Central Division and would qualify if the season ended today. Athanasiou has been a large part of that hunt. Since clearing waivers and being reassigned in early November, Athanasiou has scored eight goals and 16 points in 16 games with AHL Rockford. Should they qualify by season’s end, he’ll be an important part of their playoff success.
  • In a move similar to the Blackhawks, the Calgary Flames announced that they have reassigned defenseman Ilya Solovyov to their AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers. The Mogilev, Belarus native has again spent much of the time in the AHL this season, scoring six goals and 21 points in 43 contests. His point production is good for fourth on the team among defensemen, and his +16 rating is the second-best. 
  • The San Jose Sharks are expected to make a minor roster move, although it won’t involve their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda. According to Curtis Pashelka of the East Bay Times, the Sharks are expected to activate Nikolai Kovalenko from the injured reserve ahead of tonight’s matchup against the Colorado Avalanche. It’ll be the second time Kovalenko has played his former team since being traded in early December. He’s been limited to 17 games in San Jose due to a pair of injuries but has scored one goal and eight points when healthy.
  • According to a team announcement, the New York Rangers have reassigned defenseman Matthew Robertson to their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. The team has also recalled Chad Ruhwedel in a corresponding roster move. Despite being recalled a few times this season, Robertson has yet to debut in the NHL. It’s prudent for the Rangers organization to make Robertson eligible for the 2025 Calder Cup playoffs if he has no avenue to time in the NHL. The former 49th overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft has scored one goal and 18 points in 47 AHL contests this season. Ruhwedel will reprise a familiar role as the team’s seventh defenseman. He has tallied one assist in five games for the Rangers this season, averaging 14:06 of ice time.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers are expecting to assign goaltender Aleksei Kolosov to the minor leagues before the AHL roster deadline on Friday per Jackie Spiegel of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The move was first reported by Anthony SanFilippo of Philadelphia-based sports site On Pattison, who adds that the move isn’t a paper transaction. Kolosov has split time between the major and minor rosters this season, with a 4-8-1 record and .870 save percentage in 15 NHL games and a 2-4-1 record and .874 Sv% in seven AHL games. He was the starter for the KHL’s Dynamo Minsk last seaosn, where he set a much more acheived 22-21-3 record and .907 save percentage in 47 games.

Wild Acquire Justin Brazeau

According to ESPN’s Kevin Weekes, the Minnesota Wild are acquiring winger Justin Brazeau from the Boston Bruins in exchange for forwards Marat Khusnutdinov and Jakub Lauko and a 2026 sixth-round draft pick. Minnesota has made the deal official.

With Boston shifting into a seller’s mindset over the last week, Brazeau became an obvious trade chip. The New Liskeard, Ontario native was in the final year of a two-year, $1.55MM contract and was one of the few pending unrestricted free agents of value on the Bruins’ roster.

Brazeau is in his first full NHL season after splitting last year between the Boston and Providence Bruins. He has 20 points, split evenly, in 57 games this season and ranks seventh on the team with 89 hits. Minnesota was drawn to Brazeau’s lofty six-foot-six, 227-pound frame – and his right-hand shot – shares Michael Russo of The Athletic.

Brazeau’s pro career began on an ECHL contract with the Newfoundland Growlers in the 2019-20 season. He broke into the pros with 55 points in 57 games, enough to earn a mid-season call-up to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies and an everyday role with the squad in the following year. Brazeau’s AHL start was slow-going in the shortened 2020-21 season, backed by just five points in his first 22 AHL games. The Marlies opted to move on from Brazeau in the following summer, setting him up for a move to the Bruins organization. On the back of cold scoring, he returned to the ECHL for the start of the 2021-22 campaign. But Brazeau quickly earned another call-up after netting 20 points in 18 games. He didn’t let his second chance slip, netting 31 points in 51 games in his first season in Providence. He doubled down with 45 points in 67 games of the 2022-23 campaign, and 37 points in 49 AHL games last year – hot enough scoring to earn the lumbering winger his first NHL call-up.

The Bruins have kept Brazeau on the NHL roster since his first recall in February of 2024. He’s totaled 15 goals and 27 points in 76 career NHL games – and seems to be finding better footing as a third-line role specialist this year. He’ll bring a strong net-front presence to a Wild roster that only has one player – fringe defenseman David Jiricek – taller than six-foot-three.

In exchange for Brazeau, the Wild give up a pair of depth forwards. Lauko has served as one of the team’s top physical presences when he’s healthy, though routine games have come few and far between. Lauko has six points, 27 penalty minutes, and a minus-five in 38 games this season, while tying for fourth on the team with 69 hits. He’s missed 24 games with various lower-body injuries, including a dismal stretch at the end of 2024 where Lauko missed two weeks with one injury, made his return, then got reinjured in his first game back and missed an additional month. He returned briefly before landing back on injured reserve for 20 days of February.

Lauko was in his first season with the Wild after spending the last two years – the first two seasons of his NHL career – with the Bruins. He’ll return to Boston looking to spur his never-ending string of bad health.

Khusnutdinov will join Lauko in the move out East. The 22-year-old has played in 73 games as Minnesota’s fourth-line center over the last two seasons but managed only three goals and 11 points. Khusnutdinov was far more productive over a four-year career in Russia’s KHL, where he suited up for SKA St. Petersburg and their farm club, HC Sochi. Khusnutdinov totaled 22 goals and 75 points across 162 KHL games before he even turned 21. That includes a single-season high of 11 goals and 41 points in 63 games of the 2022-23 season. He moved to Minnesota after Sochi’s 2023-24 campaign came to an end, and has so far struggled to find his footing in North American pros. He’ll slot in as a young and capable depth centerman for a needy Bruins club – and boasts an interesting amount of upside given his secondary inclusion in this deal. How Boston taps into that upside could go a long way towards tailoring their long-term plan, while Brazeau brings a towering addition to a Wild club looking for short-term success.

Rangers Showing Interest In Sabres’ J.J. Peterka

The Buffalo Sabres aren’t expected to be much of a focus at this year’s Trade Deadline, but one young star has seen his name circulate around rumors. Now, the New York Rangers are joining in on the race for top-line Sabres winger JJ Peterka per Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News. The report of New York’s interest was seconded by Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, but downplayed by Arthur Staple of The Athletic, painting an enticing picture headed into Friday’s Trade Deadline.

Lysowski adds that New York’s assistant coach, Michael Peca, worked closely with Peterka during the winger’s only year in the minor leagues. Peterka scored a team-leading 28 goals and 68 points in 70 AHL games under the guidance of Peca and then-head coach Seth Appert.

The likelihood of Peterka moving at the deadline seems slim-to-none. The 23-year-old has turned into a perennial star for the Sabres, fighting his way onto the top line at the end of last season and vindicating it with a fantastic performance this year. He has 18 goals and 49 points in 58 games – the third-most scoring on the Sabres behind Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin. Peterka is on an 82-game pace of 69 points, which would blow his career-high 50 points set last season out of the water. He’s also on pace for 25 goals this season, which wouldn’t quite top his 28 goals last year but nonetheless shows his knack for finding the back of the net.

Peterka has totaled 58 goals and 131 points in 219 career games since making his NHL debut in the 2021-22 season. He not only seems like a cornerstone of the Sabres lineup for years to come – but also stands as the team’s best draft steal in recent memory. Buffalo drafted Peterka with the 34th-overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, coupling him with Jack Quinn as the team’s breakaway stars from that class. Peterka has since played in the most NHL games, scored the most goals, and recorded the most points of anyone drafted outside of that year’s first round.

Suffice it to say, a trade for Peterka would need to be exorbitant. The Sabres are in the midst of a 13-season playoff drought – a cold streak that paces all North American major men’s sports leagues. Peterka has been a piece that’s sparked the offense in the midst of that drought, though the team is still floundering despite their young winger’s success. Lysowski added that Buffalo will want NHL players back for any moves they make, which could be the hang-up that pushes any deal involving Peterka to the off-season at least.

New York may be able to swing a deal by offering up forward Alexis Lafreniere, who went first-overall in Peterka’s draft year but has struggled to find the same hot start to his career. Lafreniere has 14 goals and 35 points in 62 games this season, and set his career-highs in scoring with 28 goals and 57 points last year. The Rangers would likely have to add more to balance the equation, even despite Lafreniere’s draft pedigree, which could pull players like K’Andre Miller or Braden Schneider into the fold. Schneider could be particularly enticing, offering a right-shot that Buffalo sorely needs. Even then, it seems draft capital may be in order to land a top young player who has only grown more from season to season.

The Rangers have shown no shyness in making big moves this season. Since the start of the year, they’ve parted ways with Filip Chytil, Ryan Lindgren, Jacob Trouba, Jimmy Vesey, and Victor Mancini. They’ve managed that overall without losing too many future assets – save for the young Mancini – which could set up more fire sale options. The Rangers added Brendan Brisson to a scant prospect pool on Thursday. He’ll join Brennan Othmann, Brett Berard, Adam Sykora, and Lucas Edmonds as the team’s top prospects in the AHL. All options are wingers with bottom-six upside at least, creating a bit of a logjam in the Rangers pipeline. Acquiring Peterka – maybe on the back of one of these prospects – surely wouldn’t solve that logjam, but it would give New York a major upgrade over their promising-but-long-drawn options right now.

Injury Notes: Orlov, Stillman, Mazur, Quinn

The Carolina Hurricanes announced in the minutes leading up to Thursday night’s game that top-four defenseman Dmitry Orlov would sit out with a day-to-day injury. His last-minute absence forced defenseman Riley Stillman, Carolina’s only extra skater, into the lineup. Stillman was placed on waivers earlier in the day with the intention of being assigned to the minor leagues.

Stillman suffered an injury of his own partway through the game after taking the skate of Boston Bruins forward John Beecher to the face. Stillman headed immediately down the tunnel. He was ruled out for the rest of Thursday night’s game per Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer, but no further updates were provided.

Orlov’s absence leaves a sizeable hole on the Hurricanes’ blue-line. He ranks second among the team’s defenders with 24 points in 62 games. Orlov also averages the third-most ice time on the team, with 19:42 putting him just a couple of minutes behind the top pair of Jaccob Slavin and Brent Burns. Orlov is also Carolina’s second-most-used defenseman on the penalty-kill behind Burns. The Hurricanes will be forced to fill all of his roles in the short term and will need to make a roster move to do so, with Stillman likely out. Top prospect Scott Morrow – the points leader among Chicago Wolves defenseman (39 points) – will be the most likely candidate for a call-up.

More injury notes around the league:

  • Detroit Red Wings rookie Carter Mazur went down the tunnel just one minute into his NHL debut, after awkwardly bumping into Utah Hockey Club forward Jack McBain. His injury was listed as upper-body in a formal statement from the team. No indication of Mazur’s timeline has been provided. The news brings an unfortunate end to what was a dream night for the Michigan-native. Mazur has scored 15 points in 20 AHL games this year and looked set to land fourth-line minutes after the departure of Andrew Copp to injury and Christian Fischer to waivers. But Detroit may need to go searching for a new fill-in, which could define their Trade Deadline approach with less than a day left.
  • Top Buffalo Sabres winger Jack Quinn left the team’s Thursday night game midway through the first period due to illness. No further details were disclosed. Quinn skated for four shifts and 2:25 in ice time before exiting. He leaves a notable hole behind him after recording three points in his last five games. That scoring streak has brought Quinn to 10 goals and 24 points in 53 games this season. Buffalo isn’t currently carrying any extra forwards, with Jason Zucker out with a “frustrating” injury per Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic. That could prompt Buffalo to make a roster move, or shop for a depth forward on the open market – should Quinn need to miss additional time with his illness.

Utah Hockey Club Places Nick Bjugstad On Injured Reserve

The Utah Hockey Club will have one missing forward for tonight’s game against the Detroit Red Wings. Utah announced they’ve placed center Nick Bjugstad on the injured reserve due to an upper-body injury.

Earlier in the week, multiple outlets reported that Bjugstad was dealing with an illness. Although the events are mutually exclusive, we know that Bjudstad is dealing more with a physical ailment than an illness.

No distinction has been made, but Utah will likely make the injury designation retroactive to Bjugstad’s most recent game on March 1st. The team had a long four-day break between games, and making the IR placement retroactive to last Saturday would make Bjugstad eligible for activation after tomorrow’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Still, it won’t be a major missing piece for Utah over the next couple of games. The team has relegated Bjugstad to a third-line role after spending much of last season in the team’s top six. He’s scored five goals and 10 assists in 53 games, averaging 12:39 of ice time. The 2024-25 campaign will be Bjugstad’s lowest-scoring season since his dreadful 2021-21 season with the Minnesota Wild.

Utah has been busy over the last 24 hours in locking up their pending unrestricted free agents to new extensions. Given that the team hasn’t appeared motivated to do the same with Bjugstad, there was an outside chance that the team would look to move him ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. There’s still a non-zero chance Bjugstad is moved, but his poor production and injury may have nixed any remaining chance.

Trade Deadline Notes: Marchand, Leafs, Nelson, Devils

The Trade Deadline is mere hours away, and despite a quiet build up, multiple major headlines have started to boil to the surface – all captured by TSN’s latest Insider Trading. The deadline could be headlined by the Boston Bruins parting ways with team captain Brad Marchand, per Chris Johnston of The Athletic during the Insider Trading segment.

A Marchand trade would be era-defining for the Bruins. He has been in Boston for the entirety of his 16-year, 1,090-game NHL career. Cracking franchise record books is a tough feat on an Original Six club but Marchand nonetheless ranks fourth in Boston history in career goals (422), games played (1,090), and penalty minutes (1,113). He also ranks fifth on Boston’s all-time points leaderboard.

Nearly two decades after his first introduction to the team, Marchand now stands as Boston’s last connection to days past. Where Zdeno Chara, Patrice Bergeron, Tuukka Rask, and David Krejci have retired – Marchand has continued on. He took on the Bruins captaincy last season and has continued strong production into his age-36 season. Marchand ranks second on the Bruins with 21 goals and 47 points in 61 games this season – only behind David Pastrnak’s dazzling 32 goals and 77 points. Getting Boston to part ways with their captain, their rink rat, and their second-ranked scorer would take a monumental effort, but the right mix of future structure could convince the middling Bruins. Marchand has emphasized his preference to stay in Boston.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs will continue to seek out centermen and defensemen on the trade market per TSN’s Darren Dreger. They’re exploring multiple options, including Philadelphia’s Rasmus Ristolainen and St. Louis’ Brayden Schenn. Both players are entering the golden years of their careers. Schenn is in his age-33 season. He’s captained the Blues since Ryan O’Reilly left in 2023. Like fellow captain Marchand, Schenn has held to his typical style in recent years. He has 12 goals and 38 points in 63 games this season, while offering stout two-way play and a 50.3 percent faceoff win-rate. Ristolainen, 30, has seen his scoring dwindle as he’s entered his 30s. He has just 19 points in 59 games this season, but does boast a plus-five – the first positive plus-minus of his 12-year NHL career. He’s rounded out his defense and offers a hardy physical presence. On a Leafs team looking for the additions to match big moves by the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, either veteran could bring impactful depth.
  • The New York Islanders will likely wait until the last minute before they make a decision on extending or trading veteran forward Brock Nelson, per Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. Buzz around Nelson’s deadline availability has ebbed and flowed over the last few months, mixed between reports of total availability and looming extension. The 33-year-old Nelson has 20 goals and 43 points in 61 games this season. He’s one of three players, alongside Anders Lee and Bo Horvat, tied for New York’s lead in scoring. Nelson is set to enter unrestricted free agency this summer and carries a 16-team no-trade clause, which will limit the places the career-Islander is able to go. The New Jersey Devils are among interested teams as they look to bank on accrued cap space after Jack Hughes’ season-ending injury.

Rangers Acquire Carson Soucy

6:30 PM: The trade has been made official by both teams.

5:15 PM: The New York Rangers have reportedly acquired veteran defenseman Carson Soucy from the Vancouver Canucks, per TSN’s Darren Dreger. In return, the Vancouver Canucks will receive the San Jose Sharks’ third-round draft pick, per Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, which New York acquired in an earlier trade that sent winger Reilly Smith to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Vancouver reportedly asked Soucy to waive his full no-trade clause earlier in the day, per Rick Dhaliwal of The Athletic, who adds that Soucy took his time and fielded a call from fellow former-Canuck and now-Ranger J.T. Miller.

For much of the season, Soucy has been the focal point of trade rumors. He’s in his second year with the Canucks after signing a three-year, $9.8MM contract with the team in 2023. Soucy recorded six points, 12 penalty minutes, and a plus-10 in 40 games with Vancouver last season, while filling roles on both sides of the lineup. But a lower-body injury earned him a spot on injured reserve from November to January – and a hand injury shelved him for another month in February. The routine absences ate into Soucy’s ability to earn a top-four lineup role in Vancouver. He’s spent this season confined to bottom-pair minutes, with 10 points, 42 penalty minutes, and a dismal minus-13 in 59 games.

Soucy has been a routine depth defenseman since he earned his first three NHL games in 2017-18. Originally a 2013 fifth-round selection, Soucy played through his rookie season with the 2018-19 Minnesota Wild, netting 14 points, 18 penalty minutes, and a plus-16. That was enough to earn Soucy Minnesota’s oft-rotating seventh-defender role, and he showed signs of comfort with 17 points, 51 penalty minutes, and a plus-22 in 50 games of his sophomore season.

Soucy’s signs of stout depth defense were enough to convince the Seattle Kraken to select him from Minnesota in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft. A move out West brought with it a chance at more ice time that Soucy relished in. He recorded 10 goals, 21 points, 47 penalty minutes, and a plus-seven in 64 games with the inaugural Seattle Kraken while averaging 17:40 in ice time. Each of those stats still stand as Soucy’s career-highs. He struggled to maintain the scoring in his second year with Seattle – netting just 16 points in 78 games. That led to a move north in free agency, where Soucy again struggled to plant his feet in the daily lineup.

He’ll now head out East to join a Rangers blue-line that’s seen plenty of change this season. New York has parted ways with Jacob Trouba, Ryan Lindgren, and Victor Mancini in favor of adding Urho Vaakanainen, Erik Brannstrom, and Calvin de Haan. Those new faces haven’t quite filled the lineup holes they were tasked with, which could open the door for Soucy to finally land a consistent role. Each of New York’s new additions have flashed upside in their short minutes with the Rangers, and will battle for at least two vacancies on the team’s bottom pair.

New Jersey Devils Have Expressed Interest In Ryan O’Reilly

According to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, the New Jersey Devils have contacted the Nashville Predators regarding Ryan O’Reilly’s availability. New Jersey is desperately attempting to fill the void left by Jack Hughes after losing him for the remainder of the season due to shoulder surgery.

O’Reilly makes sense as a Devils’ trade target for several reasons. He won’t be able to replicate Hughes’s high-level scoring, but he’s a robust two-way center with plenty of playoff experience. Even when Hughes returns next September, adding O’Reilly would give New Jersey a solid center trio through the 2026-27 season.

The 16-year veteran is in year two of a four-year, $18MM contract signed with the Predators in 2023. He performed admirably in his first year with the club, scoring 26 goals and 69 points in 82 games. On the defensive side of the puck, O’Reilly carried a 53.9% faceoff rate, with many of those draws coming in the offensive zone. Because of his performance last year, O’Reilly finished 36th in Selke Trophy voting.

Like many players on Nashville’s roster, O’Reilly has struggled offensively. Still, there are a few positives to take away from his performance this season. O’Reilly has increased his faceoff rate to 56.6% and his CorsiFor% at even strength to 55.1%. He would make a valuable addition to New Jersey for his faceoff rate alone, given the team ranks 24th in the category with a 49.05% success rate.

There would be offensive struggles in New Jersey the rest of the way simply because there’s no replacing Hughes in the lineup. Still, O’Reilly is an adequate second-line center on any team and could slide down to the third line next season. Unfortunately, the Predators won’t let him be had very easily.

Although his contract doesn’t have trade protection, the Predators have publicly stated they’ll treat O’Reilly as if he has a full no-movement clause. Meanwhile, despite being 30th in the league standings, Nashville hasn’t expressed much desire to move him.

The Devils must present the Predators with a substantial offer if they want O’Reilly to change hands. Since he is not a rental player, this might be something they are willing to consider.

Sharks Holding Luke Kunin Out For Trade Purposes

The San Jose Sharks are planning to hold forward Luke Kunin out of the lineup on Thursday night for trade-related purposes. The decision was first reported by Curtis Pashelka of the Bay Area News Group and later seconded by Chris Johnston of The Athletic. San Jose traded fourth-line centerman Nico Sturm to the Florida Panthers earlier on Thursday – and would part with both of their bottom-six centerman should Kunin also be on the move.

Kunin has been a part of two trades in his eight-year career, though neither came in the middle of the season. The Minnesota Wild drafted Kunin with the 15th-overall selection in the 2016 NHL Draft and promoted him to the NHL two years later. He started off slow, with just 21 points across his first 68 games and two NHL seasons. He was reassigned to the minors for part of the 2018-19 campaign and found much hardier scoring – 20 points in 28 AHL games – which sparked a breakout performance in the 2019-20 season. Kunin posted a career-high 15 goals and 31 points in 63 games that year. Minnesota followed that statement year by selling high on Kunin before the start of the following season, dealing him to the Nashville Predators for Nick Bonino and the draft pick that would turn into Marat Khusnutdinov.

Kunin initially held onto his scoring through the early-career move, with 10 goals and 19 points in his first 38 games in Nashville. But a lower-body injury cut his first year with the Predators short, and he only managed 22 points in 82 games after returning in 2021-22. That downward trend prompted another move, with Nashville sending Kunin to San Jose for John Leonard and a draft pick in July of 2022. Kunin has filled a depth role in San Jose in the three seasons since. He’s twice scored 11 goals and 18 points in a single Sharks season – managing the feat in 77 games last year and 63 games of this season.

But those numbers are still far from the 30-point ceiling Kunin managed at his best. He’s a physically imposing centerman, but needs the backing of a hardy line to be at his best. He’ll be a cheap option on the open market, though any potential buyer will have to hope yet another trade can kick Kunin’s goal-scoring back into gear.

Kraken Holding Out Brandon Tanev For Trade Purposes

The Seattle Kraken are planning to hold winger Brandon Tanev out of the lineup in Thursday night’s game against the Nashville Predators per Sporstnet’s Elliotte Friedman. This will be Seattle’s way of protecting their assets with Friday’s Trade Deadline looming. Tanev has been a frequent mention in trade rumors leading into deadline season.

Tanev has played for three different clubs in his 10-year career, but the heat of trade rumors is a new feeling. He’s never been traded before, instead making his moves through free agency and NHL expansion drafts. Tanev broke into the pros after scoring 28 points in 38 games of his senior season at Providence College. That convinced Winnipeg to sign Tanev to a one-year, undrafted free agent contract out of college and promote him directly to the NHL. He received a handful of games across the next three seasons, each time performing well enough in a bottom-six role to convince the Jets to re-up his contract. But he struggled to muster much production, with just 22 points and 44 penalty minutes in the first 116 games and three seasons of his NHL career. Tanev managed a career-high 16 goals, 35 points, and 44 penalty minutes in 82 games of Seattle’s 2022-23 season. It was another breakout for the hard-hitting wing, though he’s failed to live up to it in the two years since – with 33 points and 61 penalty minutes in his last 126 games. Tanev is still a hard-working, physical, and strong bottom-six winger with a flash of goal-scoring upside. He’s in the final year of his multi-year extension originally signed in Pittsburgh, and could offer a cheap and physical rental option on a market now without former Bruins center Trent Frederic.
