Pacific Notes: Sheahan, Tuch, Carter, Middleton

March 9, 2020 at 8:56 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

In advance of another trip through unrestricted free agency, it appears Oilers center Riley Sheahan is changing things up.  Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal reports that the 28-year-old has switched agents and is now represented by Ritch Winter; previously, Pat Brisson was representing him.  Sheahan’s offensive pace is basically identical to that of a year ago as he sits with eight goals and seven assists through 64 games this season.  He’s currently making $900K but with Edmonton’s salary cap situation, it seems unlikely that they’ll be able to give him much more than that on a new deal.

More from the Pacific Division:

  • Golden Knights winger Alex Tuch has had a setback in his recovery from his lower-body injury, notes David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal (Twitter link). Instead of being available to play as anticipated, he has been sent back for further evaluation.  It has been a tough season for Tuch who has battled injuries on multiple occasions and has struggled when he is in the lineup.  After collecting 52 points in 2018-19, he has just eight goals and nine assists in 42 contests so far this season.
  • Although Kings center Jeff Carter has yet to skate since March 1st when he had a setback in his recovery, head coach Todd McLellan told Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider that they haven’t ruled out him returning at some point over the final few weeks. The veteran has been out with a lower-body injury for nearly three weeks now but even though Los Angeles is well out of playoff contention, McLellan indicated that Carter wants to get back before the season ends.
  • Sharks defenseman Jacob Middleton was just starting to secure a regular role in the lineup after being recalled late last month but that momentum has been derailed. Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News mentions that Middleton is listed as week-to-week with his lower-body injury and may not be back this season.  The 24-year-old has played in ten NHL games this season and will be a restricted free agent with arbitration eligibility in July.

Four Players Remain Eligible To Avoid Group VI Free Agency

March 9, 2020 at 7:02 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

With the end of the season quickly approaching, we now have clarification on most of the players that are eligible for Group VI unrestricted free agency this offseason.  The full list can be found here along with the breakdown of the criteria to reach this status.  However, there are four players that could still avoid being in this situation which will be worth watching for over the last few weeks.

Colby Cave (Edmonton) – A year ago, it didn’t look like Cave would be in this situation.  He spent the majority of 2018-19 in the NHL, getting into 52 games between Boston and Edmonton but failed to earn a regular role with the Oilers this season.  Instead, he has played in 43 games with their AHL affiliate in Bakersfield this season and just 11 with the big club.  That leaves him 13 games shy of remaining RFA eligible.  While he won’t get there with regular season games, playoff games count as well and he’s likely to be up with them for their playoff run.  With AHL Bakersfield well out of playoff contention, he’s someone they could recall right away if they wanted to knock some games off before the postseason starts.

Mackenzie MacEachern (St. Louis) – Of the four, this is the likeliest one to get to 80 and remain a restricted free agent as long as he doesn’t get injured in the near future.  MacEachern has spent the entirety of the season in St. Louis, albeit in a limited role as he has averaged less than nine minutes a night in 48 games while spending a lot of time as a healthy scratch.  Nonetheless, he’s just two NHL games shy of 80 and with the Blues comfortably in a playoff spot, they can afford to toss him on the fourth line a couple more times to secure his rights for another season.

Michael McCarron (Nashville) – The 2013 first-round pick saw NHL action in each of his first three pro campaigns but hasn’t since then.  Instead, he has played a more limited role in the minors and a midseason trade from Montreal to Nashville hasn’t changed his fortunes much although he has nine goals in 26 games with AHL Milwaukee.  He’s ten NHL games shy of 80 but barring a rash of injuries, he’s unlikely to make it back to the NHL this season or at least play enough to reach the threshold.

Boo Nieves (NY Rangers) – This is another one that didn’t seem likely a year ago.  Nieves played in 43 games with New York in 2018-19 and did well enough that they gave him an early one-way contract extension to avoid him hitting the UFA market as a Group VI player last season.  However, he has played in just four NHL contests this year which leaves him four shy of reaching 80.  With the Rangers’ fourth line seeing limited minutes, it’s not crazy to think that they could bring Nieves up for a week or so to give him another look and ensure they keep his rights for next season.

If any of these players get to 80 total NHL games, they will be eligible for restricted free agency with salary arbitration eligibility this summer.

Minor College Signings: Zimmer, Lodermeier, Giuttari

March 9, 2020 at 5:30 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

While some college players will step right out of the NCAA and into professional organizations under NHL contracts, many others will have to go another route. Those who aren’t able to secure an NHL deal right away can jump into the minor leagues under amateur tryout (ATO) contracts, trying to prove they can produce at the higher level. There have been several of those today:

  • Max Zimmer from the University of Wisconsin has signed an ATO with the Charlotte Checkers, now that his NCAA career is over. In four years with the Badgers, Zimmer totaled 45 points in 115 games. A 2016 fourth-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes, his draft rights will expire in August.
  • Derek Lodermeier has inked his ATO with the Manitoba Moose, following four years at the University of Vermont. The 25-year old forward had just 11 points in his senior season but has served as captain since 2018.
  • Zach Giuttari from Brown University has signed an ATO with the Hartford Wolf Pack, giving him a chance to play in the AHL after four years in the NCAA. The undrafted defenseman served as captain for the team this season, scoring 15 points in 31 games.
  • Sometimes it isn’t even the AHL, as Matt Alvaro and Nick Hutchison have found out. The two collegiate forwards have signed with the Orlando Solar Bears and Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL respectively. Alvaro is coming off four years at the University of Vermont, while Hutchison recently completed his senior season at Canisius College.

Radim Simek Signs Four-Year Extension

March 9, 2020 at 4:50 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

March 9th: The Sharks have officially signed Simek to a four-year extension. GM Doug Wilson released a statement on the deal:

Radim has been an integral piece of our team defense for the last two seasons. His style of play blends a sound defensive game, coupled with a heavy physical ingredient and good puck-moving skills. His impact on our club when he is in the lineup is undeniable and we’re pleased he will be part of our team’s core moving forward.

Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reports that the deal is for $9MM total, an average annual value of $2.25MM

March 2nd: When the San Jose Sharks didn’t trade pending unrestricted free agent Radim Simek at the deadline, it was easy to wonder if they planned on re-signing him instead. Well that seems to be the case, as a report has emerged out of the Czech Republic that the depth defenseman has agreed to terms on a four-year extension worth around $8MM. Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News reports that though the deal has not yet been signed, the framework is in place.

Simek, 27, is in his second NHL season after originally signing with the Sharks organization in 2017. The Czech defenseman was undrafted but grew into an incredibly reliable presence in his own end, something that has carried over to his time with the Sharks. Though he has only played in 84 games, people around San Jose will tell you just how important he was last season giving the team a defensive anchor to allow some of their more offensive players to be creative. Obviously things haven’t gone quite as well this season in San Jose, but there is reason to believe he can bounce back.

Given that the Sharks have a few other defensemen headed for unrestricted free agency, it makes sense to keep Simek around. But handing out raises to players still has to be done carefully. San Jose has more than $25MM locked up in Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns and Marc-Edouard Vlasic, meaning they’ll always need to have some bargains on the back end of their defense.

Snapshots: Three Stars, Fines, Wisconsin

March 9, 2020 at 4:00 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

The NHL has released their Three Stars from last week, and the five-goal man is at the top once again. Mika Zibanejad was always going to be the first star after scoring five goals in a single game (including the OT winner). The New York Rangers center scored seven on the week, giving him a career-high 39 through just 55 games this season.

Second and third place go to two Western Conference stars in Gabriel Landeskog and Leon Draisaitl, who continued their scoring ways with nine and eight points respectively. That means Draisaitl is up to 110 on the season, an incredible feat given he has only played 69 games so far.

  • St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist has been fined $5,000 for his roughing of Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Adam Boqvist, which resulted in a line brawl between the two teams. Sundqvist tried to lay a check along the boards, but when he missed his left hand (while clutching his stick) came around and hit Boqvist in the face. The amount is the maximum allowable under the CBA, and will affect other supplementary discipline in the future.
  • While other college players are starting to sign with teams in the NHL, a few names from the Wisconsin program have yet to make their decisions. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports that the Montreal Canadiens will meet with Cole Caufield over the next week while his colleague Rick Carpiniello adds that the Rangers have been in contact with K’Andre Miller but the prospect defenseman has not yet made a decision.

Jerad Rosburg Signs With Dallas Stars

March 9, 2020 at 2:38 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Dallas Stars have dipped into the college free agent market, signing Jerad Rosburg to a one-year entry-level contract. The deal will kick in next season and Rosburg will join the Texas Stars of the AHL on an amateur tryout.

A four-year constant at Michigan State University, the 23-year old defenseman played 141 games for the Spartans and scored 55 points. A former USHL player, he failed to get picked by anyone in the NHL draft. That professional interest has obviously changed, with the Stars signing him just two days after his senior season ended.

The 6’1″ left-handed shot joins an organization that already has plenty of depth on defense, but at least some of it will be departing at the end of the year. Both Gavin Bayreuther and Dillon Heatherington are scheduled for Group VI unrestricted free agency, while Roman Polak and Andrej Sekera are both on expiring deals in the NHL. There is obviously no clear path for Rosburg to the NHL right away, but he’ll certainly provide some more experience to what could be a very young minor league blue line next season.

Red Wings Sign Alex Biega To A One-Year Extension

March 9, 2020 at 1:45 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 4 Comments

Monday: The Red Wings have officially announced the one-year contract extension.

Sunday: Alex Biega had to start the season in the minors but after an early trade to Detroit, he was recalled in late October and has been there ever since.  Clearly, the Red Wings like what they’ve seen from him as CapFriendly reports (Twitter link) that they’ve signed the defenseman to a one-year, $875K contract extension.  It’s a one-way contract and represents a small raise on his current $825K AAV.

The 31-year-old has played in 48 games with Detroit since they acquired him from Vancouver and has held his own, logging over 16 minutes a night.  While his offensive contributions have been minimal (just three assists), he has provided a physical presence from their third pairing and leads all Detroit blueliners in hits with 111.

Biega is a veteran of 227 career games between the Canucks and Red Wings despite not making his NHL debut until his age-26 season.  He’ll likely get a chance to battle for a depth role on Detroit’s back end next season but if he doesn’t make it, he would represent a serviceable recall option in the minors if he passes through waivers unclaimed which is something he did at the beginning of the year in Vancouver.

Minor Transactions: 03/09/20

March 9, 2020 at 11:33 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Another exciting weekend has come and gone on the NHL schedule without a Philadelphia Flyers loss. The team is now tied with the Washington Capitals for first place in the Metropolitan Division after winning nine straight, while their cross-state rivals in Pittsburgh continue to fall behind. Tonight many hockey fans will have their sights trained on a game between the Vegas Golden Knights and Edmonton Oilers, two teams that could very well face each other at some point in the playoffs. As they and the rest of the league prepare, we’ll keep track of all the minor moves.

  • The New York Islanders have recalled Thomas Hickey once again as they continue to deal with injuries on the back end, and his stay could be a little longer this time. The team leaves for a four-game road trip that starts in Vancouver tomorrow, before returning home next week.
  • Janne Kuokkanen has been recalled for the first time by the New Jersey Devils after coming to the organization at the trade deadline. The Carolina Hurricanes still haven’t seen Sami Vatanen in action, but New Jersey will get a closer look at one of their new prospects.
  • Speaking of the Hurricanes, the team sent Alex Nedeljkovic back to the minor leagues today as Petr Mrazek prepares for his return. Mrazek may start tomorrow for the Hurricanes according to team reporter Michael Smith, though it has not yet been confirmed.
  • Martin Kaut has been recalled by the Colorado Avalanche, a notable occurrence for more than just the prospect’s pocketbook. If Kaut plays in two more games this season he would burn the first year of his entry-level contract, something that was cited as the reason for his recent demotion.
  • The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled Brandon Hagel under emergency conditions, giving him another chance at the NHL level. The 21-year old forward still hasn’t played a game for the Blackhawks, though this will be the fifth recall of his career.

Five Key Stories: 3/2/20 – 3/8/20

March 8, 2020 at 8:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While the time for trades has come and gone, there were still quite a few newsworthy stories from around the NHL which are highlighted in the key stories of the week.  (Among the top non-NHL stories was the cancellation of the Women’s World Hockey Championships.)

Metropolitan Injuries: Carolina has been hit hard by injuries on the back end this season.  Already without Dougie Hamilton, they will now be missing Brett Pesce for the rest of the year as he is out four to six months after undergoing shoulder surgery.  To make matters worse, Sami Vatanen, one of their deadline acquisitions, suffered a setback in his recovery and is out indefinitely.  The injuries weren’t just limited to the Hurricanes though as Blue Jackets winger Josh Anderson was also ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery that carries a recovery timeline of four to six months.  The speculative trade candidate will become a restricted free agent this summer.

Cap Projections: One of the annual traditions at the GM meetings is a rough projection of next year’s salary cap.  It always tends to be on the optimistic side and this time is no exception.  NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly indicated that the projected range is from $84MM to $88.2MM with the number requiring negotiation with the NHLPA when it comes to their inflator that they can exercise.  Even at the low end, that represents a $2.5MM increase but it probably isn’t realistic to expect much more than that as the higher the Upper Limit is, the more escrow that will be withheld.  In recent years, the NHLPA has used less than the maximum inflator (5%) to try to help curtail that and this will likely be the case again this offseason.

Julien To Stick Around: With the Canadiens set to miss the playoffs for the third straight season and fourth time in five years, some were wondering if Montreal would be making a coaching change.  GM Marc Bergevin quickly put an end to that speculation, announcing that head coach Claude Julien will return for the 2020-21 season.  Julien is in his fourth season with the team (his second stint with the Canadiens overall) and the results have been relatively mediocre overall with Montreal posting a .525 points percentage in that span.  However, he has done enough to earn the continued confidence of Bergevin who will be looking to tweak his roster this summer to help try to get them back into the playoff discussion.

Offside Changes Ahead? The offside rule has come under fire since the institution of the ability to challenge for it on goals.  The current rule is that a players’ skate must be on the line to be deemed onside.  That may soon be changing.  At the GM meetings, they voted to amend the rule to make it that the skate can simply be over the plane of the line to be onside.  That would simplify the review process and would eliminate quite a few of the offside challenges overall.  There are still two more hurdles to clear before it becomes official though as it still has to get through the Competition Committee and be ratified by the Board of Governors in the offseason.

Richard Passes Away: Hall of Fame winger Henri Richard passed away at the age of 84 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.  He spent his entire 20-year career with Montreal, playing in a franchise record 1,258 games.  His 1,046 points are the third most in team history behind only Guy Lafleur and the late Jean Beliveau.  On top of that, he won an NHL record 11 Stanley Cup titles as a player, a record that is almost assuredly going to stand the test of time.  In 2017, the ‘Pocket Rocket’ was named to the NHL’s All-Time Top 100 players and was one of the most revered players in the history of the Canadiens.

Rangers Sign Jeff Gorton And Chris Drury To Contract Extensions

March 8, 2020 at 6:57 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 5 Comments

The Rangers have had an impressive season so far and have played themselves into the thick of the playoff race.  They appear to be past their rebuilding stage and have a strong core in place.  Ownership is clearly pleased with the direction of the team as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported in the latest Saturday Headlines (video link) that New York has given GM Jeff Gorton as well as assistant GM Chris Drury contract extensions.  Terms of the deals have not been disclosed.

Gorton is in his 13th season with the team and has held a variety of roles with the Rangers since coming to them from Boston for the 2007-08 campaign.  He took over from Glen Sather as GM prior to the 2015-16 season and helped shepherd them through their rebuilding process which took a drastic turn last offseason when they traded for defenseman Jacob Trouba and handed out a record breaking contract to winger Artemi Panarin in free agency.

As for Drury, he finished up his playing career in New York, spending his last three NHL seasons with the Rangers with the last one being in 2010-11.  Once Gorton took on his current role, Drury joined the front office, spending one year as Director of Player Development before taking on his current assistant GM title.  He also currently serves as the GM for the AHL’s Hartford WolfPack and led USA’s entry into the World Championships a year ago.  He’ll undoubtedly attract some interest as other GM vacancies become available across the league.

Gorton will have some work cut out for him this summer when it comes to the salary cap.  Even after moving blueliner Brady Skjei to Carolina at the trade deadline, they still have a little over $67MM in commitments for next season with several key young players (goalie Alexandar Georgiev, defenseman Anthony DeAngelo, and forward Ryan Strome) all in need of new contracts with arbitration eligibility.  That will take up a big chunk of their remaining cap room so if Gorton wants to make another big addition this summer, he’ll need to free up some space first.
