Minor College Signings: O’Leary, Beaudoin, Michigan State

March 10, 2020 at 8:59 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 5 Comments

While many of the NCAA’s elite can jump right into an NHL contract, and sometimes the NHL itself, the majority must work their way up through the pro ranks. Minor league contracts and amateur tryout (ATO) contracts are common at this time of year and after a number of those deals were signed yesterday, a few more rolled in today:

  • From preseason contender to unranked and out in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, it was a season to forget for Notre Dame. However, senior forward Mike O’Leary enjoyed the best campaign of his collegiate career, recording 23 points in 37 games. The two-way winger is now on his way to the AHL, signing a contract with the Hartford Wolf Pack.
  • Another four-year starter up front has found a spot in the pros. Brown senior Brent Beaudoin will stay close to home, joining the ECHL’s Worcester Railers. The New Hampshire native recorded 14 points in 31 games to lead all Brown forwards in scoring.
  • Perhaps the best team to have already called it a year, Michigan State sent Patrick Khodorenko to the New York Rangers yesterday and today saw fellow seniors Logan Lambdin and Butrus Ghafari head to the ECHL. Lamdin will stay nearby, as he has inked a deal with the Kalamazoo Wings. Meanwhile, Ghafari joins the Toledo Walleye. The Lebanese-American defender was a dominating stay-at-home presence at times this year.

Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Drew O’Connor

March 10, 2020 at 6:00 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Tuesday: The Penguins have officially announced the signing of O’Connor to a two-year entry-level contract that will not begin until the 2020-21 season. O’Connor will join the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the rest of the season on an amateur tryout. GM Jim Rutherford had this to say about his newest prospect:

Drew is a powerful skater with good hands, which helped him have a very good year at Dartmouth. We are very happy Drew has joined the Penguins as we feel he can help our NHL club sooner rather than later.

Monday: With several college teams finishing their seasons, the wire will soon be filled with news of NHL contracts being handed out. Undrafted free agents could be the first to go, and a familiar team seems ready to jump into the fray. Frank Seravalli of TSN reports that the Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to a contract with Drew O’Connor, who just finished his sophomore season at Dartmouth.

The 21-year old O’Connor scored 21 goals and 33 points this season for Dartmouth, playing both the wing and center while using his 6’3″ frame to the best of its abilities. He was nominated for the Hobey Baker and Seravalli previously reported that there was “no shortage of NHL interest” in the power forward.

If Pittsburgh does make the signing official, it won’t be the first time that they’ve mined the college ranks to add talent to the organization. Players like Zach Aston-Reese, Conor Sheary, Chad Ruhwedel, Adam Johnson and Casey DeSmith were all undrafted college free agents that have helped team this season.

Even if O’Connor never develops into a top scoring threat, the Penguins have shown an ability to turn almost anyone into an effective option next to Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. As they continue to move out draft picks to add depth at the deadline, securing players through places like college free agency is extremely important.

Minor Transactions: 03/10/20

March 10, 2020 at 5:33 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

If you are a fan of an Eastern Conference team fighting for a playoff spot tonight will certainly be of interest, as the Boston Bruins take on the Philadelphia Flyers while the Tampa Bay Lightning battle the Toronto Maple Leafs. Both games could have massive ramifications on seeding, while six other games have meaningful impact as well. As teams prepare for tonight’s action, we’ll keep track of all the minor moves right here.

  • The New Jersey Devils have recalled Matt Tennyson, who will play tonight in place of Fredrik Claesson. Tennyson, 29, has played in 19 games this season for the Devils, recording three points.
  • Like most days that end in Y, Nicolas Roy has been involved in another transaction. The Vegas Golden Knights forward is back on the AHL roster along with Brandon Pirri after his latest recalled. Roy has now been brought up or down more than 30 times on the season.
  • The Minnesota Wild have returned Gerald Mayhew to the minor leagues after going scoreless in six consecutive games. The 27-year old Mayhew has dominated the AHL this season scoring 39 goals in 48 games, but hasn’t been quite able to carry that production over to the NHL level.
  • Sheldon Dries and Martin Kaut have both been returned to the Colorado Eagles, which bodes well for the health of Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche star suffered a lower-body injury but it is not clear how serious it is at this point.
  • Perhaps most notable today among the minor moves is the recall of Nicolas Beaudin by the Chicago Blackhawks. The 20-year old defenseman is in his first year of professional hockey after being selected 27th overall in 2018. Through 59 games with the Rockford IceHogs, Beaudin has collected three goals and 15 points.

Philippe Myers Out Four Weeks With Fractured Patella

March 10, 2020 at 4:02 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

So much for being a game-time decision. The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that Philippe Myers has suffered a fractured patella on his right knee and will be out approximately four weeks.

Myers, 23, had started to fulfill the promise that earned him a contract in 2015 despite going undrafted. In his first taste of real full-time NHL hockey, he had 16 points in 50 games and had become a staple in the Flyers’ lineup. That includes excellent possession numbers in more than 17 minutes a night, using his 6’5″ frame to contribute at both ends of the rink.

This comes at a terrible time for the Flyers, who were playing their best hockey of the season. The team is on a nine-game winning streak and have climbed within a single point of the Washington Capitals for first place in the Metropolitan Division, but will now have to fill those 17 minutes in another way.

Luckily, the team already went out and added some playoff experience on the right side last offseason. Matt Niskanen and Justin Braun were brought in for these tough games, while the youngsters like Ivan Provorov and Travis Sanheim continue to develop into top options. Myers will be missed, but the Flyers do have strong depth on the back end to replace him.

The most interesting name to watch might be Shayne Gostisbehere, who hasn’t played up to his previous standards this season and could still play a big role down the stretch.

Philadelphia Flyers Sign Wyatte Wylie

March 10, 2020 at 3:38 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed prospect Wyatte Wylie (or alternatively, Wyatt Wylie according to multiple parts of the press release) to a three-year, entry-level contract. The defenseman is currently playing with the Everett Silvertips of the WHL who are set up for a long playoff run.

Wylie, 20, was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2018 draft but has since taken over as one of Everett’s primary puck-moving defensemen. In 62 games this season the right-handed Wylie has 14 goals and 64 points, though that production still lags well behind teammate (and new Columbus Blue Jackets prospect) Jake Christiansen in terms of per-game scoring.

Still, the solid production from a late-round pick is promising and has landed Wylie an NHL contract. Though he will be staying with Everett for the time being, a tryout with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms could be in order should the Silvertips be knocked out early. Next season he will surely be in the AHL, where he will start on a road to becoming more than just a lottery ticket for the Flyers.

Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Mikhail Abramov

March 10, 2020 at 1:03 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

While the Toronto Maple Leafs battle to make the playoffs, the front office still has their eyes on the future. The team has signed prospect Mikhail Abramov to a three-year entry-level contract. Abramov is currently playing with the Victoriaville Tigres of the QMJHL, where he will remain for the rest of the season.

The 18-year old Russian forward was selected in the fourth round of the 2019 draft, after his first season in North America. His goal scoring ability has exploded this season, with his 35 tallies tying him for tenth in the entire QMJHL. More impressively perhaps is that Abramov leads his club in scoring by 35 points, scoring 16 more goals than the next best. That kind of production without support is usually a strong indicator of success at the next level, though there is still a long way to go for him before any sort of NHL action.

Most likely Abramov will either stay in the QMJHL next season, though the Maple Leafs could also loan him back to Russia. Either way his deal will not kick in for the 2020-21 season, given he won’t turn 19 until later this month.

Snapshots: League Cancellations, Bjugstad, Hamonic

March 10, 2020 at 12:36 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

As the spread of COVID-19 continues around the world, professional sports leagues and organizations are starting to feel the effects. The San Jose Sharks are the first NHL team that is dealing with the consequences, as gatherings of more than 1,000 people have been banned in Santa Clara county. Kevin Kurz of The Athletic (subscription required) examined the situation in full, noting that the possibility exists that the Sharks will play in front of no fans later this month.

It’s not just individual teams feeling the changes though. Today, both the EBEL and DEL, leagues in Austria and Germany respectively, have cancelled the remainder of their seasons, including playoffs. The EBEL also includes teams from Hungary, Italy and the Czech Republic.

  • It has become routine among the Pittsburgh Penguins this season to expect injury, though one still has to feel for Nick Bjugstad. The forward has suffered another lower-body injury that is unrelated to any prior, and has been listed as “week-to-week” once again according to head coach Mike Sullivan. Bjugstad has played just 13 games this season, scoring two points.
  • Travis Hamonic was back at practice in full for the Calgary Flames today, skating alongside T.J. Brodie on the second defense pairing. That suggests the veteran defenseman will return to the Flames’ lineup later this week for the first time in over a month. Calgary is barely holding onto their third place position in the Pacific Division, meaning Hamonic’s return will be a welcome one as they prepare for the stretch run.

Mark Letestu Loaned To AHL On Conditioning Assignment

March 10, 2020 at 10:55 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After months of hard work and recovery, Mark Letestu will soon play again in a professional hockey game. The Winnipeg Jets forward has been sent to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose on a conditioning assignment after being diagnosed with myocarditis back in October. At that time the Jets announced that Letestu would only be allowed to do light activity for six months—it has been less than five.

Letestu, 35, played just seven games for the Jets before the diagnosis shut down his season.

Through 567 NHL games, Letestu has scored 210 points and gone to the playoffs on five different occasions. That kind of depth would certainly be welcomed by the Jets as they try to claw their way into the postseason, but it’s hard to know exactly what the veteran forward could provide at this point.

Letestu is on a one-year deal worth $700K at the NHL level and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.

Morgan Rielly To Return For Toronto Maple Leafs

March 10, 2020 at 10:49 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Toronto Maple Leafs are barely hanging onto their precarious playoff position after losing three straight games on a west coast road trip. They’ll get some help tonight however, as defenseman Morgan Rielly will return to the lineup after missing 23 games with a broken foot.

Rielly, who turned 26 just yesterday, is one of Toronto’s most important players and best defenseman. An alternate captain that has been with the team since its darkest days, it is hard to explain just how much the club has missed him over the last two months. With Jake Muzzin also out for most of that time, the Maple Leafs have relied on a patchwork group of young defensemen.

Now, with the season hanging in the balance, Toronto will take on the Tampa Bay Lightning as the first team in a very difficult stretch. The team has 11 games between now and the end of the month, with almost all of those coming against teams either in a playoff position or still battling for one. That includes two games against the Lightning, one against their rival Boston Bruins and another against the Metropolitan-leading Washington Capitals. If there was ever a time when they needed Rielly, it’s now.

New York Rangers Agree To Terms With Patrick Khodorenko

March 10, 2020 at 10:00 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

The New York Rangers aren’t going to let the Pittsburgh Penguins be the only team signing college free agents. While they may watch Drew O’Connor head to Pittsburgh, the Rangers have agreed to terms with  Patrick Khodorenko. He will sign a three-year entry-level contract which begins during the 2020-21 season and will report to the Hartford Wolf Pack on an amateur tryout for the rest of the season.

The 21-year old forward just finished his senior season with the Michigan State Spartans, in which he scored 16 goals and 33 points. Khodorenko, who was born in Walnut Creek, California, has been a consistent presence in the lineup for the Spartans and has 120 points across 143 NCAA games. Like O’Connor, there was plenty of NHL interest in the Michigan State forward but he looks like he’ll go to an organization known for getting the best out of the college ranks.

New York is always mining the college free agent ranks, with recent players like Neal Pionk, Jimmy Vesey and Vinni Lettieri all choosing them as the destination to start their professional careers. With so much positivity surrounding the club and their direction right now, it’s hard to blame any young player for wanting to be a part of the rebuild.
