Trade Deadline Primer: Columbus Blue Jackets

February 15, 2020 at 1:53 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

With the trade deadline now less than two weeks away, we will be taking a closer look at the situation for each team over the coming weeks.  Where do they stand, what do they need to do, and what assets do they have to fill those needs?  Next up is a look at the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Columbus paid a steep price to ultimately pick up their first playoff series victory last season and that price tag stung even more as Sergei Bobrovsky, Matt Duchene, and Artemi Panarin were among those to leave in free agency.  The reset was in full effect.  Or so it seemed.  To the surprise of many, the Blue Jackets are presently in a playoff spot despite a lengthy list of injuries to several key players that have them carrying an active roster with a combined cap hit of just under $50MM.  For reference, that’s more than $10MM below the Lower Limit of the salary cap.  All of a sudden, they’re going to be a team to keep an eye on at the deadline.

Record

30-18-11, fourth in the Metropolitan Division

Deadline Status

Light Buyer

Deadline Cap Space

$26.168MM in a full-season cap hit, 0/3 used salary cap retention slots, 47/50 contracts per CapFriendly

Upcoming Draft Picks

2020: CBJ 1st, CBJ 4th, CBJ 5th, CBJ 6th, CBJ 7th
2021: CBJ 1st, CBJ 3rd, CBJ 4th, CBJ 5th, CBJ 6th, CBJ 7th

Trade Chips

With a team that’s on the bubble, sometimes they can buy and sell so this would be normally a spot to discuss their pending unrestricted free agents.  However, they don’t have any on the active roster.

So let’s shift the focus elsewhere.  Winger Josh Anderson is slated to become a restricted free agent with salary arbitration eligibility this summer.  He has already had one lengthy contract standoff with the team as his current deal was signed in early October in 2017 just before the season got underway.  The 25-year-old is only a year removed from a 27-goal season that made it look like he was one of the rising power forwards in the NHL.  However, he has struggled to stay healthy this season and hasn’t played well when he has been in the lineup, collecting just a single goal with four assists in 26 games this season.  With his previous track record, there would certainly be interest in him now but a likelier move may be in the summer.

When speaking about injured players, Ryan Murray’s name has to come up as well.  Before he suffered his latest lower-body injury, he had been made available around the league.  But since he’s out of the lineup, the odds of him moving now are lower even if he is still available.

Most of their realistic trade chips are either going to be mid-round draft picks or prospects.  Rookie winger Trey Fix-Wolansky isn’t the biggest but he had a track record of production in the WHL and is off to a good start in his first AHL campaign. Center Ryan MacInnis made his NHL debut this season and is having his best year in the minors which could attract some interest from a team looking for a closer to NHL-ready player.  Winger Paul Bittner, once viewed as a quality prospect, has struggled this season and could benefit from a change of scenery.  Winger Carson Meyer is wrapping up his college career and could be a player to watch for on the August 15th free agent market if not signed by the Blue Jackets.  If someone thinks he’s worth a contract, his rights could be included in a trade.

Goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks is also one to keep an eye on.  He has looked decent in three appearances with Columbus this season and his AHL numbers are reasonable.  With Elvis Merzlikins and Joonas Korpisalo looking like their goalie tandem for the foreseeable future (plus Veini Vehvilainen in the pipeline) he could be expendable to a team looking to add a near-term goalie prospect to the system.

Five Players To Watch For: F Josh Anderson, F Paul Bittner, W Trey Fix-Wolansky, G Matiss Kivlenieks, F Ryan MacInnis

Team Needs

1) Scoring Help: Despite being in a Wild Card spot, the Blue Jackets sit 26th in the league in goals scored, the lowest of any team currently holding down a playoff position.  A top-six forward upgrade would be a big improvement but if GM Jarmo Kekalainen wants to hold on to his top picks and prospects this time around, even picking up a third liner that can help their secondary scoring would be a step in the right direction.

2) Defensive Depth: With Murray and Seth Jones on IR, what was a relatively deep defense corps has now been thinned out somewhat.  With both players expected to return this season, they don’t necessarily have to target a top-four player but adding someone that can step onto their third pairing would give them a small boost and some important injury insurance at the same time.

Bryan Little Out For The Season

February 15, 2020 at 12:49 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Jets center Bryan Little has been out of the lineup since taking a puck to the head in early November and he’s going to be out for a while yet.  Head coach Paul Maurice told reporters, including Ken Wiebe of The Athletic (Twitter links) that while the veteran has gone through a variety of tests that have yielded some positive results, they are shutting him down for the rest of the season and he will undergo surgery to help repair his perforated eardrum.  The procedure carries a three-month recovery period.

The 32-year-old only played in seven games with Winnipeg this season but was relatively productive in that span, picking up two goals and three assists.  While his days of playing on the top line have come and gone, he has still been a reliable secondary scorer and the Jets were certainly hoping he’d be able to come back down the stretch and give their offense a boost.

Now, it appears that GM Kevin Cheveldayoff will need to turn to the trade market to get that improvement.  While they’re believed to be wary of going after a prominent rental again, they will have plenty of LTIR space to work with as Little and his $5.291MM AAV can be moved onto there while they have enough confirmation regarding suspended defenseman Dustin Byfuglien’s status to spend on a short-term replacement for him.  All of a sudden, Winnipeg could be a team to watch for between now and the trade deadline.

Meanwhile, Maurice provided an update to reporters, including Mitchell Clinton of the Jets’ team website (Twitter link) regarding two of their other injured forwards.  Adam Lowry (upper body) and Mathieu Perreault (upper body) are both listed as week-to-week with the latter likely to return first.  That will likely only increase the need for them to try to add a forward over the next week or so.

Erik Karlsson Out For The Season

February 15, 2020 at 12:43 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 17 Comments

The nightmare season in San Jose just continues to get worse.   Already down two key forwards in Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl while being well out of playoff contention, the Sharks announced that defenseman Erik Karlsson will miss the remainder of the season due to a broken thumb on his left hand that will require surgery.  He is expected to be fully recovered in time for training camp.

Karlsson’s second season in San Jose has not gone as well as anyone had hoped following him signing a record-setting eight-year, $92MM deal to avoid free agency back in June, the richest contract given to a defenseman in NHL history.  After seeing his production dip to 45 points last season (albeit in 53 games), his lowest since he recorded 45 in his sophomore year in Ottawa back in 2010-11, his output went a bit lower this year as he picked up six goals and 34 assists in 56 games this season.  After being one of the top goal scoring threats from the back end in his prime with the Senators, he will now have gone three straight years where he scored less than ten times.

To make matters worse for the Sharks, they don’t have their first-round pick this season as it was dealt without any sort of trade protection as part of the trade to land Karlsson back in 2018.  Losing Karlsson, despite his struggles, is a huge blow for their back end, a group that is likely to be weakened even further when Brenden Dillon is inevitably dealt between now and the February 24th trade deadline.

Taking Karlsson’s place on the roster will be defenseman Jacob Middleton who has been recalled from the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda.  The 24-year-old has played in four games with the Sharks this season and has been held off the scoresheet while chipping in with a goal and five assists in 31 games at the minor league level.

Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that Karlsson was out for the season.

Trade Candidate: Brenden Dillon

February 15, 2020 at 11:37 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

With the trade deadline quickly approaching, we continue to profile players that have a good chance to be dealt by February 24th.

Brenden Dillon isn’t the flashiest of players offensively.  In fact, he has only surpassed five goals in a season once in his career.  However, he’s more of a throwback defenseman, one that protects his own end and plays with a physical edge.  While players like that have been phased out to an extent in recent years, there is still a demand for them when it comes to the playoffs which are often played at a slower pace where the physicality picks up.  Accordingly, the veteran should have no shortage of suitors between now and the trade deadline.

Contract

Dillon is in the final season of a five-year, $16.35MM contract signed back in 2015.  The deal was backloaded as his $3.9MM salary is higher than his $3.27MM AAV.  The contract does not contain any trade protection and he will be eligible for unrestricted free agency in July.

2019-20

Overall, it hasn’t been a great year in San Jose and that’s probably putting it lightly.  However, Dillon is one player that has lived up to his expectations.  He has provided the Sharks with his usual style of play.  The 29-year-old leads the team in hits by a considerable margin with 173 while he is actually logging his largest workload in terms of ice time since the 2014-15 season, the one he split between Dallas and San Jose.  With Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson both being erratic at times, Dillon has stepped in as somewhat of a steadying presence while holding down a spot in their top four for most of the year.  While contending teams may not want him to have quite that big of a role, it would certainly be encouraging for them to know that he can step up if injuries were to arise.

Season Stats

57 GP, 1 goal, 13 assists, 14 points, even rating, 83 PIMS, 47 shots, 19:20 TOI, 52.0 CF%

Potential Suitors

It’s not a great market for teams looking for defensemen and Dillon figures to be one of the top ones that ultimately gets moved by the deadline.  Accordingly, there should be several suitors for his services.

In the East, Carolina has been known to be shopping for help on the back end due to Dougie Hamilton’s injury and they have had talks with the Sharks about Dillon already.  However, their preference at this point seems to be someone that is signed beyond this season.  Toronto is also in need of defensive help and with Andreas Johnsson and his $3.4MM headed for LTIR for the rest of the regular season, they now have the cap room available to bring Dillon in for the stretch run.  Florida would like to upgrade their back end but with minimal cap space available, they would need to make a trade to free up some cap room first.  With Columbus playing their way into the playoff picture, they will likely want to shore up their back end (especially with Seth Jones and Ryan Murray on the shelf) and after spending big a year ago, looking at this end of the market would be a safer approach this time around.

Out West, Winnipeg now has some clarity regarding Dustin Byfuglien (who at the very least isn’t expected to play this year) and while Dillon is a left-shot defender (Byfuglien is a righty), they’re at a point where they just need defensive upgrades but after going the rental route the last couple of years, they may be aiming for someone with term now.  Vegas is in a similar situation – they could use some help on the back end but they have shied away from rentals over their first two seasons.  Mark Giordano’s injury in Calgary could have them looking for defensive help, especially if they strike out on adding the top-six forward they’ve been coveting for quite a while now.  The Blues may also be on the market for a short-term Jay Bouwmeester replacement; if he lands on LTIR, the cap space they’d free up is almost identical to Dillon’s cap hit.

Likelihood Of A Trade

The Sharks are well out of playoff contention.  They also have over $27MM tied up in four defenders for next season thanks to the big deals for Karlsson, Burns, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.  Even if they want to keep Dillon around, they can’t really afford to.  Accordingly, unless he’s injured over the next week or so, it almost certain that he will be dealt by the deadline.

Zach Bogosian Clears Waivers

February 15, 2020 at 11:00 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

Saturday: Bogosian has cleared waivers, reports Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston.  The Sabres announced that he has been assigned to AHL Rochester.

Friday: The Buffalo Sabres have decided to offer Zach Bogosian to the rest of the league for free, placing him on waivers today. Bogosian has been a healthy scratch at times this season and reportedly requested a trade, but also comes with a hefty contract that makes a deal difficult.

Bogosian, 29, was acquired by the Sabres back in 2015 as part of the huge Tyler Myers–Evander Kane deal, but his constant battle with injury never stopped. In fact, Bogosian has played more than 80 games in a season just once in his career, not even topping 65 since 2010-11. That fact, combined with a steady decline in effectiveness, has made him even impossible to ice for the Sabres.

Combine those struggles with the fact that he is still carrying a $5.14MM cap hit this season and the idea of a team claiming the right-handed defenseman becomes unlikely. Bogosian is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year and could still try to continue his career elsewhere, but having a team take that contract of Buffalo’s hands right now will be difficult.

There is always the trade route, if the Sabres are willing to retain some salary, but again it would be hard to see him providing any real upgrade for a contending team. At this point, it seems likely that he’ll just have to wait out the rest of the year in Buffalo (or, alternatively Rochester if the team decides to send him to the minor leagues and save $1.075MM against the cap).

Minor Transactions: 2/15/20

February 15, 2020 at 10:26 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

As usual, the Saturday slate of games across the NHL is a busy one with 22 teams in action including Colorado and Los Angeles facing off at the U.S. Air Force Academy as part of the Stadium Series.  There is likely to be plenty of roster movement today which we’ll keep track of here.

  • The Sabres announced (Twitter link) the recalls of defenseman John Gilmour and goaltender Andrew Hammond from AHL Rochester. Gilmour has spent most of the season in the minors but hasn’t come close to his 54-point output from a year ago with just 13 points in 32 games.  He will likely be taking the place of Zach Bogosian on the roster.  Meanwhile, Carter Hutton is taking a maintenance day which warranted Hammond’s recall to get them back to two goalies on the active roster.  Buffalo is back in action on Sunday against Toronto.
  • Joey Keane’s first NHL stint was a short one as the Rangers announced last night (Twitter link) that they had returned him to AHL Hartford.  He didn’t suit up against Columbus as the team opted to dress Brendan Smith instead.
  • Andrei Chibisov has twice been recalled by the Jets this month but he’ll be waiting a little while longer to make his NHL debut as the team announced (via Twitter) that he has been sent back to AHL Manitoba.  The 26-year-old is in his first season in North America after previously playing in Russia and has 24 points (7-17-24) in 47 games with the Moose this season.
  • The Flyers announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled defenseman Mark Friedman from AHL Lehigh Valley.  The 24-year-old has played in five games this season with Philadelphia where he recorded his first career NHL point (an assist).  Friedman has spent the bulk of the year with the Phantoms where he has 13 points in 38 games. The team followed that up hours later by announcing that Friedman has been returned to Lehigh Valley. The team obviously didn’t need him.
  • With the return of Steven Stamkos, Anthony Cirelli and Nikita Kucherov, the Tampa Bay Lightning announced they have assigned forward Mathieu Joseph to the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. The forward was originally sent to Syracuse to find his confidence back in December, but was brought up recently to fill in with all of the team’s injuries. In three games since being promoted, Joseph was scoreless with just three shots on goal.

Blackhawks Notes: Keith, Gustafsson, Smith

February 15, 2020 at 9:19 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

With the Blackhawks once again being a playoff bubble team, some have wondered if veteran defenseman Duncan Keith would be willing to waive his no-move clause to go to a contender.  Speaking with Mark Lazerus of The Athletic (subscription required), the 36-year-old indicated that his preference is to remain with Chicago and is particularly holding out hope that the team will soon be back in contention.  Keith has spent the entirety of his 15-year NHL career in the Windy City and it’s evident that he’d prefer to finish his career with the team that drafted him in the second round back in 2002.  He has three years remaining on his contract after this one with a $5.538MM AAV, a price tag that would be tricky for a lot of contenders to take on anyway even if Keith was more open to the idea of moving.

More from Chicago:

  • It has been a quieter season offensively for defenseman Erik Gustafsson. While he still leads all Chicago blueliners in points in 25, he’s well below the pace needed to reach his point total of 60.  He admitted to Charlie Roumeliotis of NBC Sports Chicago that his contract situation has weighed on him this season which may be contributing to the lower production.  The 27-year-old is slated to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and with Keith, Olli Maatta, and Brent Seabrook all signed for several more years, there may not be room to keep Gustafsson around on the left side.  With a $1.2MM cap hit, he should garner a lot of interest if the Blackhawks decide to sell at the trade deadline.
  • Forward Zack Smith will miss the next seven-to-ten days due to a left hand injury, the team announced (Twitter link). The veteran has had a limited role in his first season with Chicago, recording just 11 points in 50 games while averaging just 11:47 per night, his lowest average in any full season of his career.  The Blackhawks had made Smith available earlier in the season but between this and his $3.25MM cap hit, a trade at this point seems unlikely.

Trade Deadline Primer: Carolina Hurricanes

February 14, 2020 at 8:24 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

With the trade deadline now less than two weeks away, we will be taking a closer look at the situation for each team over the coming weeks.  Where do they stand, what do they need to do, and what assets do they have to fill those needs?  Next up is a look at the Carolina Hurricanes.

There was a time not too long ago when the Hurricanes were annually in a state of limbo at the deadline; close enough to the playoffs to consider buying, but far enough away that they never ended up making it. That’s the exact situation they find themselves in this year as well, sitting just outside the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. Sure, Carolina has obvious talent and could potentially catch the several of the five Metropolitan teams ahead of them, but a bad week or two could also push them even further down the standings. Still, it appears as though they have at least one thing on their shopping list as the deadline approaches.

Record

32-19-3, sixth in the Atlantic Division

Deadline Status

Hesitant buyer

Deadline Cap Space

$5.56MM in a full-season cap hit, 1/3 used salary cap retention slots, 44/50 contracts per CapFriendly

Upcoming Draft Picks

2020: CAR 1st, TOR 1st*, CAR 2nd, NYR 2nd, CAR 3rd, BUF 3rd, CAR 4th, CAR 7th, TOR 7th
2021: CAR 1st, CAR 2nd, CAR 3rd, CAR 4th, CAR 5th^, CAR 6th, CAR 7th, STL 7th

* – If Toronto’s first-round pick in 2020 is in the top-ten, the Maple Leafs will keep this selection and transfer their first-round choice (unprotected) in 2021 to Carolina as part of the Patrick Marleau trade.

^ –Vegas receives the 2021 5th round draft pick if Erik Haula is on the is on the Hurricanes’ roster past the 2019-20 season, and/or if Carolina trades Haula for one of the following: a player, multiple draft picks, or a draft pick in rounds 1 to 5. If no condition is met, no pick will be transferred.

Trade Chips

The first thing to note about the Hurricanes when assessing their trade deadline ammunition, is how many draft picks they have this year. The team has amassed six selections in the first three rounds that can be used to add to their roster, limiting the amount of talent they would need to move. That’s not to say there aren’t some players potentially on the block however.

Things start with Jake Gardiner, who hasn’t been a very good fit since coming over from Toronto through free agency. The high-risk, high-reward defender has looked better of late, but rumors emerged early on that the team may decide to move on and find a better fit. Trading a defenseman less than a calendar year after signing him wouldn’t be out of the question for the Hurricanes, who parted with Calvin de Haan after just one season in Carolina.

There is also the aforementioned Haula, who is on an expiring contract and has been a healthy scratch this season. The 28-year old missed most of the 2018-19 campaign due to injury but did have a 29-goal season in his first year with the Golden Knights just prior. There would be interest in Haula if was made available.

If they get involved in something big, there are also plenty of interesting prospects in the minor leagues for the Hurricanes to deal from. Ryan Suzuki, Eetu Luostarinen, Dominik Bokk, Julien Gauthier, Janne Kuokkanen and others are all interesting, but it is Jake Bean that perhaps would bring about the most intrigue. The 21-year old defenseman was picked 13th overall in 2016, has dominated in the minor leagues but has still yet to really get an opportunity at the NHL level. You can bet that teams will be asking about him in any trade talks.

Five Players To Watch For: F Erik Haula, D Jake Gardiner, D Jake Bean, F Julien Gauthier, F Janne Kuokkanen

Team Needs

1) Dougie’s Replacement: No, you’re likely not going to find a direct replacement for Dougie Hamilton, who was performing at a Norris Trophy level before he went down to injury. But his absence has only increased the chatter about a defensive change in Carolina. The team has been looking all season, though their needs may have changed a bit from a depth addition to an impact player.

2) Scoring Touch: Somehow, even though Carolina has been working to add to their offense for years, they still lack some real firepower up front. The team scores enough goals as a whole with 181 through the first 56 games—not including the five they currently have tonight—but only Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov have more than 15 on the year. Nino Niederreiter’s touch around the net has vanished, and Ryan Dzingel is on pace for just 12 goals after scoring 26 last year. Adding a true finisher up front would only make their attack more lethal.

Zack Kassian Suspended Seven Games

February 14, 2020 at 7:15 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 11 Comments

The Department of Player Safety have handed out a punishment, and quite a hefty one at that. Zack Kassian of the Edmonton Oilers has been suspended seven games for kicking Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Erik Cernak last night. As the accompanying video explains:

It is important to note that while we acknowledge Kassian’s argument that he was trying to disentangle himself from the pile of players, that in no way justifies this action. NHL players regularly become entangled with opponents and teammates, and regularly remove themselves from the pile safely and legally, without putting themselves or their opponents at risk of serious injury…

…It is also important to acknowledge the Oilers’ argument that the kick was not forceful. We have always been clear that force is an important consideration for both on-ice officials and our department in assessing penalties or discipline, with more substantial penalties being handed out for more forceful or violent infractions. However we must emphasize that using a skate blade to make intentional or reckless contact with an opponent, regardless of the purpose, is entirely different from a hit that involves a player’s body or stick as there is minimal force required to dangerously cut or injure an opponent.

This is the fourth suspension handed out by the DoPS for Kassian in his NHL career, including one just a month ago when he attacked Matthew Tkachuk of the Calgary Flames. That means that Kassian is a repeat offender under the CBA, and will forfeit more than $166K in salary for this seven-game suspension.

It also means there will be absolutely no tolerance for this sort of thing or any other incidents that require supplementary discipline in the future for the Oilers’ winger. After just signing an extension with Edmonton, he’ll have to try and stay out of the DoPS sightline for a while.

Scott Howson Elected AHL President

February 14, 2020 at 4:11 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

The AHL’s board of governors has unanimously elected Scott Howson as the league’s next president and CEO. He will replace the outgoing David Andrews, who will vacate the position after June 30th. Andrews will continue in his position as chairman of the board. Howson is currently the director of player development for the Edmonton Oilers.

After 26 years as league president, Andrews will give way to a long-time NHL executive in Howson. In 2007 he became the general manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets and led the franchise for six seasons, though his term there was not filled with much on-ice success.

Howson will become the league’s tenth president, leading them into a new decade. The AHL is going to soon expand to 32 teams with the expansion into Palm Springs, while the purchase and relocation of the San Antonio Rampage by the Vegas Golden Knights will soon be voted on.
