Joel Edmundson Out Six Weeks With Broken Arm

February 9, 2018 at 10:05 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The St. Louis Blues have been dealt another tough injury blow, as the team announced Joel Edmundson will be out for the next six weeks with a broken forearm. Edmundson suffered the injury when blocking a Nail Yakupov shot last night according to Lou Korac of NHL.com. The Blues have recalled Chris Butler to fill the roster spot.

After an impressive playoff performance last year, and an injury to Jay Bouwmeester early on, Edmundson has become one of the most important pieces on the St. Louis blue line. Playing more minutes than anyone not named Alex Pietrangelo or Colton Parayko, the 24-year old has already matched his career-high with 15 points on the season and leads the team in blocked shots. A top penalty killer on one of the better units in the league, the Blues will have to find another option when down a man.

A six week timetable at this point puts Edmundson in jeopardy of missing the rest of the season. The Blues last game is on April 7th, eight weeks from now. Though he’ll likely be ready for the playoffs, any setbacks could mean he doesn’t get much of an opportunity to shake off the rust before jumping into the postseason. Butler, 31, isn’t a long-term answer despite nearly 400 games of NHL experience, which brings the trade deadline into question.

The Blues do have Jordan Schmaltz sitting in the minor leagues waiting for a chance, but as they fight off other teams for one of the Central Division playoff spots, someone with more experience could be needed. If the team feels like their depth has been threatened with this injury, they could go add a rental option to help them down the stretch. Unfortunately, the Blues don’t have a ton of cap space to work with even after putting Edmundson on long-term injured reserve, meaning they can’t make too many additions at the deadline without shipping salary out the other way.

IIHF Releases 2018 Olympic Schedule

February 9, 2018 at 8:30 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

This article was originally published in September when the schedule was first released. After a request in our live chat yesterday, we’re pushing it to the top again.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) released the schedule for the 2018 Olympic Men’s Hockey tournament in Pyeongchang, South Korea today, and as expected the games will go from February 14th to 25th—though, because of the time difference North America will be watching the gold medal game late on the 24th. The first matchups will be Slovakia vs Russia and USA vs Slovenia, both games featuring Group B opponents.

The host South Korean team will make their Olympic debut on February 15th against the Czech Republic, while reigning champion Team Canada starts against Switzerland, a team that has given them quite a bit of trouble on the international stage in the past. The entire schedule is listed below, all times Central.

February 14th

Slovakia vs OAR – 6:10am

USA vs Slovenia – 6:10am

Finland vs Germany – 9:10pm

TBD Bronze Medal Game – 6:10am

TBD Gold Medal Game – 10:10pm

A few things to remember about these Games. One, the NHL will not be sending players to compete in the tournament, including all those in the minor leagues signed to two-way contracts. AHL-only deals will be allowed to go, as will those playing abroad. Two, the NHL trade deadline is set for February 26th, giving teams a bit of time to sign any international players and still have them eligible for the playoffs.

The IIHF also released the Women’s hockey schedule, a tournament that may actually get a boost from the lack of NHL presence at the Games. The Canadian team has won four straight gold medals and should be a powerhouse once again. They will however be without long-time leader Hayley Wickenheiser, who retired from the sport this January. Team USA will try to follow their impressive overtime win at the World Championships in April with another gold medal; they won the inaugural women’s tournament in the 1998 Nagano Games. The schedule for their tournament is as follows:

Trade Candidates: Radim Vrbata

February 8, 2018 at 8:20 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 2 Comments

With the trade deadline approaching, we will be profiling several players in the weeks ahead that have a good chance to be dealt by February 26th.

The last time that the Florida Panthers went out and added a veteran Czech forward, it worked out perfectly. Jaromir Jagr was an All-Star and the Panthers were Atlantic Division champions. GM Dale Tallon may have been hoping that lightning would strike twice when he added Jagr’s countryman, Radim Vrbata, this off-season. It didn’t. In fact, Vrabta’s tenure in Florida has been an unmitigated disaster, as the 36-year-old is on pace to have the worst offensive season of his long, successful NHL career.

Nevertheless, Vrbata has shown time and time again to be a lethal weapon when he finds the right line chemistry and, despite what they say, even on teams other than the Coyotes. Vrbata’s decline in production could be a sign of his age, but some teams may gamble on it instead being a product of his surroundings and will look to acquire the experienced scorer at a bargain price. The Panthers are not as far out of a the playoff picture as some might think – six points back with two games in hand as of this writing – but that won’t stop them from entertaining offers on several players, especially Vrbata. The veteran forward hasn’t worked out in Florida and wouldn’t be much of a loss for the Cats, so a trade could wind up as a win-win for both sides.

Contract

Vrbata signed a one-year deal with Florida this summer that carries a $2.5MM base salary, his cap hit for the year. Vrbata can earn an additional $1.25MM in performance bonuses and, interestingly enough, a trade to a contender could trigger one of them; Vrbata earns $250K if his team makes the playoffs this season. He also earns $250K each for 10 goals, 15 goals, 20 goals, and 45 points. With just 5 goals and 13 points thus far, he realistically has a shot at only $500K in bonuses for 10 goals and a playoff berth. This overage would count against next season’s cap.

2017-18

The myth surrounding Vrbata has always been that he doesn’t perform outside of Arizona. While past campaigns in Colorado, Chicago, and Vancouver have indicated otherwise, this season in Florida has only added fuel to that fire. Vrbata has skated in 35 games for the Panthers this season, missing five games due to injury, five to illness, and another six (and counting) as a healthy scratch. Even when he’s been on the ice, Vrbata has been invisible. He’s outside the top ten in goals, assists, and points among Panthers and his impressive power play production has dried up, reduced to just four points on the year. On top of that, Vrbata has the third-worst plus/minus on the team and, as he has his whole career, plays with little physical or defensive ability. As a result of his poor play, the 16-year NHL veteran is seeing the least ice time of his career. The Vrbata experiment in Sunrise did not work out and will soon be over, either via trade or the end of the season.

Season Stats

35 GP: 5 goals, 8 assists, 13 points, -8 rating, 14 PIM, 78 shots, 13:05 ATOI, 44.3 CF%

Potential Suitors

So who would want to trade for such an uninspiring asset? Unfortunately for Vrbata, the Coyotes aren’t an option as they are as far from a deadline seller as any team could be. However, Vrbata has found success elsewhere before in his career and he can do so again. Especially at this point in his career, Vrbata is the perfect deadline depth acquisition: a hired gun who doesn’t need to be relied upon to be a team’s best player. With the right fit, Vrbata can score in bunches down the stretch and in the postseason. Several playoff-bound teams are known to be looking for a scoring winger, including the Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and San Jose Sharks. All three teams have the infrastructure where Vrbata could settle in to a middle-six role depending on which personnel he fits best with. Top contenders like the Nashville Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning – if the Bolts are willing to bring Vrbata back for a second go-round after his disappointing prior stint – could also use the luxury of bringing in a veteran winger, but could also survive if he doesn’t work out and ends up a frequent scratch.

However, where Vrbata is likely the best fit is not with a bona fide playoff team, but instead a fringe team looking to make a minor addition in hopes of increasing their odds of seeing the postseason. The Calgary Flames, who won’t trade away any high draft picks, might be happy to take a look at Vrbata if the price is a late pick or low-end prospect. The Colorado Avalanche, the team that drafted Vrbata, and New Jersey Devils have both stated that they won’t derail their long-term plans by chasing expensive rentals, but could pursue the affordable Vrbata, while the Anaheim Ducks and Carolina Hurricanes could also be options if they are closer to a playoff berth come deadline day.

Likelihood of a Trade

Predicting whether Vrbata’s 2017-18 performance will outweigh his career production in the eyes of this year’s buyers is impossible. There is a clear need for a veteran winger with a scoring touch on many teams, including some not even mentioned, but whether they target Vrbata over any number of other options (even including Panthers teammate Colton Sceviour) remains to be seen. If anyone does come calling though, it would be a surprise to see Florida turn down the best offer. The Panthers will continue to push for a playoff spot of their own, but Vrbata won’t play a real part in that plan whether he is traded or not. The signing was a failure, but Florida can still turn it into a positive if they are able to get something back in return for trading Vrbata.

Snapshots: Johnson, Nash, Green

February 8, 2018 at 6:37 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 8 Comments

The Columbus Blue Jackets are looking for a landing spot for Jack Johnson, after he requested a trade earlier this season and wants a chance to play a bigger role somewhere before hitting free agency. In tonight’s edition of Insider Trading on TSN with panel members Pierre LeBrun, Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie, they discuss where Johnson could land.

LeBrun even reports that Columbus is “comfortable they can go out and get a low first-round draft pick,” but that they’d still rather get a forward back for a playoff run of their own. That at least seems to increase the likelihood of Johnson being dealt by the deadline, as even a late first is very valuable for clubs on draft day.

  • Rick Nash is clearly on the market, now that the New York Rangers have effectively signaled a rebuild and asked for his no-trade list. Dreger lists the Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars as the top two contenders for Nash, but that as many as ten teams have been in contact with his representatives. Nash is likely going to be one of the top prizes on deadline day, if he even lasts the next few weeks.
  • McKenzie chimes in with some news on Mike Green of the Detroit Red Wings, once again linking him to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning are after a defenseman for their Stanley Cup run, but McKenzie reports that the Red Wings are after a return somewhere between the one they received for Brendan Smith last season (2018 second-round pick, 2017 third-round pick) and the one St. Louis received for Kevin Shattenkirk (effectively 2017 first-round pick, prospect Zach Sanford). Whether Tampa Bay wants to pay that much is unclear, but they do have quite the prospect pipeline already built up if they do start to sacrifice futures.

Jeff Skinner Latest To Enter Trade Deadline Rumor Mill

February 8, 2018 at 3:47 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Carolina Hurricanes made a strong statement today when they waived Marcus Kruger and Josh Jooris, unwilling to continue their current level of mediocrity. That comes just after Frank Seravalli of TSN included forward Jeff Skinner on the latest edition of his Trade Bait board, stating that the Hurricanes could listen on the 25-year old sniper.

Skinner is no stranger to TSN’s Trade Bait board, having first appeared two seasons ago. But this time there seems to be a growing friction between him and Peters that is likely destined to come to a head – whether in the next two weeks or the summer.

While it’s not overly surprising that Skinner would find himself among the rumor mill, the idea that there is a friction between player and coach is certainly one to monitor over the coming weeks. If there is something irreparable between the two, trading Skinner before he enters the final season of his contract would offer an increased value. The three-time 30-goal scorer is poised to be part of the incredible class of unrestricted agents in the summer of 2019, alongside other names like Tyler Seguin, Artemi Panarin, Blake Wheeler and many, many others.

The Hurricanes currently sit a single point out of a wildcard position in the Eastern Conference, but have lost their last three games and are just 4-5-1 in their last ten. Skinner meanwhile has just two points (one at even strength) in those ten games, and carries a -6 rating. His overall production on the season sits at 15 goals and 31 points, but hasn’t come close to matching the 37-goal output from a year ago.

Still, the Carolina forward would have plenty of suitors if he were to be willing to waive his no-movement clause. Teams from all over the league would love to add a dynamic offensive presence like him, and his $5.73MM cap hit is far from prohibitive. With less than three weeks before the trade deadline, we won’t have to wait long to find out.

Injury Notes: Hutchinson, McCabe, Kuhnhackl

February 8, 2018 at 2:05 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Even though Connor Hellebuyck has been a revelation this season for the Winnipeg Jets, the goaltending position as a whole has been anything but solid. Steve Mason, brought in to battle for the starting job has suffered multiple concussions, and now his replacement Michael Hutchinson is in the same boat.

Hutchinson suffered the concussion in the pre-game skate on Tuesday according to Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun, and will be out indefinitely while Eric Comrie comes up to fill the role. Hutchinson is one of the more interesting goaltenders to watch over the next few months, as he heads towards unrestricted free agency.

  • In Buffalo, the Sabres’ season hasn’t gone according to plan. Expected to take a step forward with a healthy Jack Eichel and improved defense, the team is once again at the very bottom of the Eastern Conference. Now, Jake McCabe will be out for at least three weeks after undergoing surgery on his thumb. While there isn’t a ton left to play for this season in Buffalo, new head coach Phil Housley will use it to try and create some building blocks for the club going forward. With McCabe only signed for one more season after 2017-18, his role is far from certain.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have surged up to second in the Metropolitan Division, but will have to play without one of their most physical forwards for a while. Josh Yohe of The Athletic reports that Tom Kuhnhackl is out for multiple weeks after suffering an injury early in the game against the Vegas Golden Knights. Kuhnhackl is also a key penalty killer on the Penguins, a role that will have to be filled by someone else for the time being.

New York Rangers Front Office Issues Letter To Fans Detailing Future

February 8, 2018 at 12:44 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 18 Comments

The New York Rangers front office has taken an unprecedented step by releasing a letter from Glen Sather and Jeff Gorton directly to fans, seemingly admitting that they will be sellers at the upcoming trade deadline. The letter explains that though the team has been competitive for more than a decade, it is time now to move in a different direction. Most telling may be the admission that “familiar faces” will likely be lost:

As we approach the trade deadline later this month and into the summer, we will be focused on adding young, competitive players that combine speed, skill and character. This may mean we lose some familiar faces, guys we all care about and respect. While this is a part of the game, it’s never easy. Our promise to you is that our plans will be guided by our singular commitment: ensuring we are building the foundation for our next Stanley Cup contender.

The Rangers already made an unexpected move today when they waived Brendan Smith less than a year after re-signing him to a four-year deal, and have been rumored to be listening on core players like Ryan McDonagh and Mats Zuccarello all season. Still, for a team to come out and admit publicly that they are going to clean house while they sit just three points out of a playoff spot is unheard of in the NHL.

Now, all eyes will quickly turn to the roster players who have a good shot at being traded in the next few weeks. McDonagh and Zuccarello are two, but unrestricted free agents Rick Nash, Michael Graber, Nick Holden and David Desharnais all could be moved as well. Beyond that, J.T. Miller, Kevin Hayes, Jimmy Vesey and Brady Skjei are all restricted free agents this summer and no one seems untouchable at this moment.

Minnesota Wild Trade Mario Lucia, Christoph Bertschy To New Jersey Devils

February 8, 2018 at 12:01 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Minnesota Wild have been at the 50-contract limit for some time, making it hard to add anything at the trade deadline. That problem is gone now as the team has traded Mario Lucia and Christoph Bertschy to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Viktor Loov.

Lucia and Bertschy will provide some minor league depth for the Devils, as neither project to have much of an impact at the NHL level. Lucia was selected in the second round in 2011, but hasn’t been able to generate much offense during his time in the AHL. A World Junior champion with the United States in 2013, Lucia is now 24 and has just 15 points on the season for the Iowa Wild.

Loov on the other hand gives some depth for the Wild on defense, as they deal with an injury to Jonas Brodin and have to force some players into larger roles. The Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick has four NHL games under his belt, but isn’t much more than a minor league option at this point. According to Michael Russo of The Athletic, the Wild are still deciding whether to keep him as an insurance policy on the NHL roster or send him straight to the Iowa Wild.

The biggest impact of the deal is likely for Jordan Greenway, who is closing in on the end of his collegiate career. The Boston University forward is expected to sign with the Wild when his junior season comes to a close, and could make an impact for the team down the stretch this season. A 6’5″ 230-lbs power forward, Greenway has been playing center this season for BU and could add some size and versatility to the Minnesota NHL squad. Before the deal, Minnesota wasn’t able to sign him to an entry-level contract as they were at their roster limit.

Minor Transactions: 02/08/18

February 8, 2018 at 8:38 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The NHL has nine games on tap for this evening, including some great Western Conference matchups between the Golden Knights-Sharks, Blackhawks-Stars and Avalanche-Blues. With things so tight in the wildcard playoff races, every point counts. Like always, we’ll keep track of all the minor moves of the day right here.

  • The New Jersey Devils have ended Jimmy Hayes’ conditioning stint, as the forward will rejoin the team today. Since conditioning loans don’t remove you from the active roster, the Devils do not need to make a corresponding move to fit him in. Instead, he’ll become an extra option should they feel they need a change in the bottom-six.
  • Adam Erne has been recalled by the Tampa Bay Lightning, as they look for a spark in their lineup. Erne hasn’t played in the NHL this season, but scored three goals in 26 games last year for the Lightning.
  • With Jason Demers set to return to the lineup, Kyle Capobianco is on his way back to the AHL. The young defenseman has still played in just a single NHL contest, but has considerable upside for the Arizona Coyotes.
  • The New York Rangers have recalled Neal Pionk from the AHL according to Steve Zipay of Newsday. Pionk was signed out of the University of Minnesota-Duluth last offseason, and has 17 points with the Hartford Wolf Pack this season. Pionk has a bomb of a shot, and could be given powerplay time if he makes it into the Rangers lineup down the stretch.
  • With Mark Stone still out for the Ottawa Senators, the team has recalled Mike Blunden from the AHL. The Senators will play with 11 forwards and seven defensemen tonight against the Nashville Predators.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins are dealing with injuries to Patric Hornqvist and Tom Kuhnhackl, meaning they needed another body from the minor leagues. It turns out that will be Teddy Blueger, who is expected to make his NHL debut just in time for the team’s annual “Dads’ Trip.” Blueger was selected in the second round of the 2012 draft, and has 26 points in 45 games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this season.
