Asking Price On Evander Kane Even Higher

January 16, 2018 at 9:19 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Last we heard, the Buffalo Sabres were looking for a first-round pick, prospect and conditional draft pick for Evander Kane. Despite his excellent goal-scoring talent, that package wasn’t seen as a fair return by everyone and some believed it might have to come down before the trade deadline. Instead, it seems like it is actually increasing. Darren Dreger was on TSN radio today and revised his previous reporting, saying now that the Sabres are looking for a roster player in addition to the three previously listed assets.

"<strongDreger goes on to speculate about the temptation the Toronto Maple Leafs will feel to move James van Riemsdyk if the Sabres succeed in getting that massive package for Kane, and that temptation wouldn’t be limited to them. The Vegas Golden Knights and New York Islanders might both have to consider moving out their own pending unrestricted free agents—James Neal, David Perron and Josh Bailey among them—if the market gets desperate enough to hand over such important assets.

Still, there are likely some who believe that Kane can be a sort of final puzzle piece to a championship roster. With 36 points in 44 games he’s on pace for the highest total of his career, and is a potential 30-goal man again this season. Slotting that kind of production into a lineup would certainly make the acquiring team that much more formidable down the stretch.

Looking to last season, two high profile rentals were traded at the deadline. Kevin Shattenkirk (with Pheonix Copley) from the St. Louis Blues netted a first-round pick, Zachary Sanford, Brad Malone and conditional picks (which never materialized). Martin Hanzal (with Ryan White and fourth-round pick) cost Minnesota three draft picks including a first-rounder and a minor league forward.

Perhaps more recently is the example of Matt Duchene, who scored the Colorado Avalanche a roster player, two prospects and several picks, though Duchene came with an extra year of control and needed three teams to figure out the deal.

Kane’s case isn’t exactly like any of those three, as he’s an in-his-prime winger that’s capable of contributing in several different ways. But it seems unlikely that the added roster player would be anyone of significance, unless they find a desperate GM around the league. There should be plenty of available scoring threats, and some like Max Pacioretty or Mike Hoffman that come with additional control.

Minor Transactions: 01/16/18

January 16, 2018 at 9:04 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After yesterday’s afternoon action, the NHL returns today with six evening matchups that include some interesting Metropolitan battles. The Devils, Islanders, Flyers and Rangers are all within four points of each other in the Metro, and today’s games will be another important chapter in the race for the wildcard spots. Though the Capitals have pulled away at the top of the division, the rest is still just as competitive as ever. For those teams, changes on the fringe of the roster are extremely important. We’ll keep track of all the minor moves around the league right here.

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled Louis Domingue from the AHL, sending Connor Ingram back after the bye week. Domingue recorded a pair of shutouts for the Syracuse Crunch during the break, continuing his confident run since leaving the Arizona Coyotes earlier this year. The goaltender has completely turned around his season, and will serve as the backup to Andrei Vasilevskiy at least until Peter Budaj is healthy (and perhaps beyond).
  • The Los Angeles kings have recalled Michael Amadio and Paul Ladue from the AHL after waiving Jussi Jokinen and sending Oscar Fantenberg and Kurtis MacDermid back down. Amadio is in the midst of a 17-game point streak in the AHL, and has 34 in 30 games. The Kings are on a four game losing steak and need to turn things around quickly if they expect to stay in a playoff position in the Western Conference.
  • The San Jose Sharks have indeed moved Paul Martin to the minor leagues after he cleared waivers today. Martin will try to prove that he’s still a valuable defenseman in the NHL, and attract a potential suitor from somewhere around the league.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled Joonas Korpisalo now that their bye week is about to end. Korpisalo was sent to the minor leagues to stay in game ready shape during the time off, and is now back up in the NHL where he’s appeared in nine games this season.
  • Frederick Gaudreau is back in the NHL with the Nashville Predators for the fourth time this season, taking Viktor Arvidsson’s roster spot after he was moved to injured reserve. Gaudreau has played 18 games with the Predators this year, recording just three points. Arvidsson was injured at practice yesterday and is out with a lower-body injury, though according to Adam Vingan of The Tennessean, the IR stint is retroactive to the team’s last game on January 9th. Arvidsson took morning skate with the team, but won’t play tonight against the Vegas Golden Knights.
  • Cory Schneider won’t be starting tonight for the New Jersey Devils as he’s come down with an illness, so Keith Kinkaid will be in net with Ken Appleby recalled to serve as his backup. To make room on the roster for Appleby, Steven Santini has been sent to the AHL. Appleby has never entered an NHL game and will likely be sent down soon afterwards.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have recalled Dominic Toninato from the San Antonio Rampage, bringing up the 23-year old forward for the second time this season. Toninato has just 12 points in 30 games for the AHL club, but is a responsible two-way player that can provide some depth for the Avalanche.

Trade Rumors Swirl Around Toronto

January 15, 2018 at 7:44 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 13 Comments

It wasn’t long ago that the Toronto Maple Leafs were one of the worst franchises in the NHL, making the playoffs once in just eleven seasons and suffering an epic collapse in that one postseason appearance. Therefore, it was fittingly a surprising and exciting story line when the young 2016-17 Maple Leafs made the playoffs and even gave the President’s Trophy-winning Washington Capitals a run for their money in the conference quarterfinals. Toronto had finally turned it around.

This season however, expectations have changed. In an especially weak Atlantic Division, the Leafs have, for all intents and purposes, already locked up the third Atlantic playoff spot and are simply looking to strengthen their roster for what seems to be a collision course with the Boston Bruins in the first round, a rematch of their 2013 blunder. While much of that preparation will simply be maintaining a healthy roster and polishing their play through the rest of the regular season, there is also much anticipation that further additions to the team are in order to give the team a shot at the Stanley Cup this spring.

Trade speculation is natural for contenders, but it isn’t always rational. There has already been a notion among many sources that impending unrestricted free agents James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak, and Leo Komarov will be used as the team’s own “rentals” and that the Leafs could be unlikely to add a forward. There’s also the fact that Toronto has next to no cap space to make a typical picks/prospects-for-player rental deal. Yet, fans are still eager to grasp at any rumors of the Leafs adding a big-time defenseman or another depth piece up front.

Case in point: Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reported earlier today that rookie defenseman Travis Dermott’s number was suddenly changed from #3 to #23 without his approval. The reaction from Toronto fans was overwhelmingly that the team was set to acquire a veteran player with the #3. Even SB Nation’s Maple Leafs blog Pension Plan Puppets was quick to post a somewhat laughable list of potential former Leafs whose #3 could be saved for retirement alongside a more serious list of current #3’s throughout the league who could be future Leafs. The vast majority of that list are defenseman, which lends some credence to the theory, but many – Seth Jones, John Klingberg, Brayden McNabb, Tucker Poolman – are likely untouchable and others – Kevin Bieksa, Chris Bigras, Nick Jensen – are likely of no interest to Toronto. Could the Pittsburgh Penguins really be ready to move on from Olli Maatta? Would the Leafs really be willing to take on the Keith Yandle contract or the risk of uber-physical Radko Gudas? Or was the number change simply due to some other decision that carries far less weight than Toronto fans would like it to?

Only time will tell what moves the Maple Leafs make prior to the Trade Deadline, but the expectations are not going away any time soon. Toronto’s Stanley Cup window has only just opened, but the hockey-crazed city is ready for their first title since 1967 and fans will be eager to see the club add additional pieces to strengthen the roster. The Leafs will continue to be a team to watch through the next month and a half, but that doesn’t mean every little piece of information on the rumor mill is worth taking seriously.

Carolina’s Sebastian Aho Out Indefinitely

January 15, 2018 at 6:00 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 3 Comments

Sebastian Aho’s recent streak of good luck has come to an end. The Carolina Hurricanes star forward had posted 14 points in his past 10 games entering the team’s match-up against the Calgary Flames yesterday, but was unable to notch another point or even finish another game after taking a big hit from Flames captain Mark Giordano. While the hit was high –  and drew a match penalty – head coach Bill Peters indicated after the game that Aho may have suffered a knee injury in addition to his head injury.

While it remains unclear which injury is to blame (most likely  a combination of both), ’Canes beat writer Chip Alexander reports this evening that those initial post-game concerns were warranted. Carolina has revealed that Aho is out indefinitely with a concussion and lower-body injury. Alexander does add that the lower-body injury, suspected to be a knee injury, did not require Aho to undergo surgery, which could help him return to action sooner rather than later.

While the Hurricanes are fortunate enough to have activated veteran forwards Lee Stempniak and Marcus Kruger off of injured reserve last week, their presence alone won’t be enough to make up for the loss of Aho. The 20-year-old winger leads the team with both 16 goals and 37 points and has been especially effective of late as Carolina looks to stick around the playoff picture in the ultra-competitive Metropolitan Division. What may help to offset the Aho injury is the fact that the ’Canes have just begun their bye week, potentially lessening the impact of Aho’s absence if he returns within a relatively short amount of time. Only time will tell how long the team will be without Aho, but the longer “indefinitely” lasts and he remains sidelined, the less and less likely it is that Carolina makes the playoffs this season.

Deryk Engelland Signs One-Year Extension

January 15, 2018 at 3:38 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Vegas Golden Knights have locked up another pending free agent, signing Deryk Engelland to a one-year, $1.5MM extension. The deal also includes up to $1MM in performance bonuses according to CapFriendly, similar to the deal he is currently on. Engelland was set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, but has revitalized his career with the Golden Knights and been a huge part of their success on and off the ice.

Engelland was perhaps a surprise selection by the Golden Knights in the expansion draft, seeing as he was already an unrestricted free agent after playing last season with the Calgary Flames. There was a method to their madness however, as Engelland right from the start has been marketed as a hometown boy making good. Engelland is from Edmonton, but played for the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL and makes his home in Las Vegas during the offseason. He’s taken on a leadership role with the team, helping players get comfortable in the city.

He’s also been much more than just a placeholder on the ice. The big, physical defenseman has been a mainstay on the blueline for Vegas, logging nearly 20 minutes a night and contributing 13 points in 41 games. Easily on pace to break his career-high of 17 points, he also leads the team in shorthanded ice time and is a +9 on the season.

The $1.5MM figure is an interesting one for Engelland, who is making just $1MM in salary this season but has a potential to earn another $1MM in performance bonuses. It’s unclear what those bonuses actually are, but should he hit all of them this year but not next, he actually could be taking a pay cut to return. Though he’ll be 36 when the 2018-19 season begins, the Golden Knights will gladly keep him around even as his skills diminish, if only for his impact on the early connection of the franchise to the city.

Hobey Baker Award Voting Opens

January 15, 2018 at 3:04 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

With the collegiate hockey season entering the home stretch, voting for this year’s Hobey Baker Memorial Award has opened with 67 players nominated for the award. The trophy is given to the top NCAA player in the country, and has an impressive line of winners over the past few years. In 2013-14, Johnny Gaudreau took home the award as a junior for Boston College, followed by Jack Eichel in his only year for Boston University in 2015-16. The last two trophies have gone out to big offseason free agents in Jimmy Vesey and Will Butcher, who are now playing for the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils respectively.

2017 Hobey Baker Memorial AwardThe award also has several top NHL alumni in its small fraternity, including Neal Broten, Tom Kurvers, Paul Kariya, Chris Drury, Ryan Miller and Brendan Morrison. With that group behind them, this year’s winner is certainly not someone to take lightly.

The fan vote will be added to the opinions of NCAA head coaches to come up with a 10-man finalist group, which will then have another fan vote and go through a selection committee. The nominees are as follows, with their respective NHL draft teams in parenthesis.

Montreal Notes: Danault, Shaw, Shaw

January 15, 2018 at 12:32 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Montreal Canadiens have announced several incidents up front, including Phillip Danault experiencing concussion-like symptoms. The 24-year old forward took a Zdeno Chara slapshot to the head this weekend, and will now be re-evaluated on a daily basis.

It’s not clear when Danault will return to action, which is a big blow for the Canadiens. The young center has 23 points on the year after putting up a solid 40-point season in 2016-17, his first full-time NHL campaign. His loss weakens what is already a thin group down the middle, while also removing the team’s third-leading scorer.

  • Unfortunately, Danault’s announcement comes just after the team revealed that Andrew Shaw is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury suffered in the same game against the Boston Bruins. Shaw will be reevaluated in a week’s time, but it’s just another blow for a forward group that was already struggling. Shaw has 19 points on the year and leads the team in powerplay goals with five.
  • Earlier the team claimed Logan Shaw off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks. He’ll wear #49 with the club and give them some needed depth down the middle, but is far from an answer to their disappointing season. Shaw has just 25 points in 150 career games, and hasn’t played a ton of center at the NHL level.
  • One has to wonder whether these latest injuries will accelerate the Canadiens’ trade deadline plans, as they now have a huge hill to climb to get back into the playoff race. Without Danault and Shaw, and still eight points behind the New York Rangers for the second wildcard spot, the Canadiens look destined to be sellers at the deadline. Andrew Shaw was considered a potential piece for sale despite his contract, but it’s unclear how this latest injury will affect his market.

Paul Martin Placed On Waivers; Montreal Claims Logan Shaw

January 15, 2018 at 11:05 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The early reports were true, and Paul Martin has indeed been placed on waivers by the San Jose Sharks according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. LeBrun also notes that the Montreal Canadiens have claimed Logan Shaw off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks.

Paul MartinMartin, 36, has had a rough season as he battled through injuries and a lack of playing time. The Sharks have seemingly moved on from him, and are currently looking for a trade partner to give him another opportunity. While a waiver claim could certainly offer that, it’s more likely that he goes unclaimed and heads to the San Jose Barracuda to try and rebuild some value. His $4.85MM cap hit this year and next is a real impediment to any team that is interested, and any deal right now would likely have to include some degree of salary retention.

If Martin does clear, and immediately starts to play for the Barracuda, there is obviously still a place for him in the NHL. The veteran defenseman recorded 26 points and more than 19 minutes a night just last season, and has been an effective stay at home counterpoint to Brent Burns’ roving nature in the past.

It’s important to note that both the Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs are at the 50 contract limit, and would need to move out a player in order to make a claim or acquire Martin in trade.

Shaw on the other hand was just waived by the Ducks after they claimed J.T. Brown from the Tampa Bay Lightning, and now finds his way to Montreal to help their forward depth. The 25-year old has eight points in 42 games for the Ducks this season, and provides some size—though not a ton of physicality—for the Canadiens to insert into their bottom-six.

Morning Notes: Ekman-Larsson, Czechs, Sikura

January 15, 2018 at 10:37 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 10 Comments

Oliver Ekman-Larsson is one of the most interesting names on the rumor mill lately, with the Arizona Coyotes destined for a finish near the bottom of the league once again. The 26-year old defenseman will be a free agent in the summer of 2019, but Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun writes that the team will have to make a decision before that.

Garrioch reports that the asking price for Ekman-Larsson right now is two high-end roster players and a first-round pick, a prohibitive package for any team really trying to compete this year. Still, the Maple Leafs, Devils and Flyers have all apparently shown interest in the defender in the past, and several other teams would surely jump in if the price dropped closer to the deadline.

  • The Czech Republic released their Olympic team for the upcoming Games, including familiar NHL names like Martin Erat, Roman Cervenka and Jiri Sekac. Like the other countries, the Czech team is made up of professionals scattered across various European leagues and the KHL.
  • Dylan Sikura continues to impress at Northeastern with 30 points in his first 19 games, and as Scott Powers of The Athletic writes, the Chicago Blackhawks have more than just an eye on him for the end of the season. The Blackhawks fully intend to sign Sikura and add him to the NHL roster after his NCAA career comes to an end, though depending on how far his school goes in the final tournament if could throw a wrench into those plans. Powers excellently details all the possibilities for Sikura, including waiting until August 15th to become an unrestricted free agent. Though that technically could happen still, it seems extremely unlikely that he’d do anything but sign with the Blackhawks at this point.

Minor Transactions: 01/15/18

January 15, 2018 at 8:59 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The NHL is back at it after an eventful weekend, and now have just a couple of weeks until another break for the All-Star game. Things are tightening up in the standings, and the next month will feature teams finally deciding to sell at the deadline. For all the league’s minor moves, keep it right here.

  • With the Calgary Flames heading onto their bye week, the team has reassigned Marek Hrivik, Andrew Mangiapane and Ryan Lomberg to the AHL. The Flames don’t play again until Saturday, and will let the trio get into some more game action for the Stockton Heat in the meantime.
  • The St. Louis Blues are back in action tomorrow after their own bye week, and have recalled three players from the minor leagues. Vince Dunn, Tage Thompson and Ivan Barbashev are all on their way back up from various AHL appointments, and should get back to helping out the NHL squad.
  • Similarly, the Nashville Predators have flipped Anders Lindback and Juuse Saros once again, bringing the latter back up after giving him some game action during their bye week. Saros got into three games for the Milwaukee Admirals, stopping 94 of 97 shots.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have brought Travis Dermott and Frederik Gauthier back up as expected, but interestingly given Dermott a new number. The young defenseman was wearing #23 for the Maple Leafs at practice according to Kristen Shilton of TSN, instead of the #3 he wore in his first few games.
  • Peter Holland is back in the NHL, recalled by the New York Rangers today. The team sent Boo Nieves back in his place, giving the team a different look in their forward group. Holland was acquired by the Rangers earlier this year in exchange for Adam Cracknell, but this would be his first action this season should he get into the lineup. Holland was a first-round pick in 2009, but has never quite reached his potential as a top-six center.
