Sabres Acquire Beck Malenstyn From Capitals

The Buffalo Sabres have acquired the rights to pending-restricted free agent Beck Malenstyn from the Washington Capitals, sending Pick 43 in the 2024 NHL Draft the other way.

Beck Malenstyn was one of two notable RFAs in Washington’s system, alongside forward Connor McMichael. The two headlined a stressful summer for the Capitals – who are facing three remaining free agents, including McMichael and Max Pacioretty, with just $7.6MM in cap space if you factor in the team receiving LTIR relief for Nicklas Backstrom. Having recently acquired the ever-cheap Logan Thompson, Washington now sits just two contracts short of a full NHL roster.

For their role in helping Washington sort out their summer, Buffalo receives the hefty frame of Malenstyn, who carved out a meaningful role on Washington’s third line as a rookie this year. He recorded 21 points and 25 penalty minutes in 81 games through his inaugural season – more points than he’s managed in any one AHL season, despite spending the last four years with the Hershey Bears. Before his move to the Capitals lineup, Malenstyn’s career-high sat at just 16 points, recorded in 65 games with Hershey in 2021-22. He even took a step back in scoring last year, posting just 10 points in 40 games while supporting Hershey to their first of back-to-back Calder Cups.

Now headed to Buffalo, Malenstyn will serve as relief to a Sabres team that may lose each of Zemgus Girgensons, Victor Olofsson, and Eric Robinson to unrestricted free agency. If that is the case, Malenstyn would vie for a strong role on the third-line wing, though he’ll face pressure from top prospects like Matthew Savoie, Isak Rosen, and Jiri Kulich.

Marty Pavelich Passes Away At Age 96

Former Detroit Red Wings winger Marty Pavelich has passed away at the age of 96. Pavelich was the oldest living player to play 100 career games or more in the NHL.

Pavelich was built through the Red Wings system. He began his career with Detroit’s juniors team, the Galt Red Wings, in 1946, where he played alongside future Hall-of-Fame goalie Terry Sawchuk. Pavelich’s strong juniors season earned him a call-up to Detroit’s minor-league affiliate, the Indianapolis Capitals, in the following season – a move he quickly vindicated by earning a full-time NHL role. Pavelich posted four goals and 12 points in 41 games as a rookie but quickly followed it with 26 points in 60 games as a sophomore. More importantly, Pavelich showed signs of strong grit. It was enough to inspire then-head coach Tommy Ivan to build a checking line around the forward that supported Detroit’s stars, serving as a big factor in the team’s run to the Stanley Cup in 1950.

That was the first of four Stanley Cups that Pavelich won with the Red Wings – having also joined the team for their wins in 1952, 1954, and 1955. Detroit boasted a fantastic lineup through it all, spearheaded by Sawchuk, Ted Lindsay, Dutch Reibel, and Gordie Howe. Pavelich certainly wasn’t on the height of his Hall of Fame teammates, but he knew the work he had to put in to make up for it. Even at the age of 96, he told the Detroit Free Press, “I may not have been the most talented member of those teams, but you were never going to outwork me.”

Panthers Optimistic About Re-Signing Sam Reinhart

The Florida Panthers are optimistic about their ability to re-sign star forward Sam Reinhart, general manager Bill Zito tells Tom Gulitti of NHL.com. Zito adds, though, that the team may not have enough cap space to bring back both Reinhart and top-pair defenseman Brandon Montour. He said, “We’re going to spend to the cap… I’m going to spend it all, so you want [cap space], and I don’t have it, I can’t manufacture it. It’s frustrating, it’s harder, perhaps, but there’s really nothing you can do.”

The Panthers are entering the summer with $19.52MM in projected cap space and a daunting 13 pending free agents. In addition to Reinhart and Montour, Florida will have to negotiate with Vladimir Tarasenko, Anton Lundell, and Anthony Stolarz. Each of those players could demand chunks of Florida’s remaining funds, especially as Zito says the team’s goal is to bring back as much of their first Stanley Cup-winning roster as they can.

To do that successfully, Florida will first need to get by Reinhart’s contract without spending half of their budget. It seems hard to tell how much the 28-year-old winger could demand on a new deal, after posting a dazzling 57 goals and 94 points this season. The performance was the most goals ever posted by a Panther not named Pavel Bure – and proceeded two 30-goal seasons in Reinhart’s first two years with the Panthers. He’s carried his scoring tough into the postseason, with 20 goals and 32 points in 53 playoff games since joining Florida in 2021. Reinhart also carries draft precedent, having gone second overall in 2014. While that latter point may not be much reason to pay him more, it could be reason to not pay him less.

An ideal world could see Reinhart sign a deal similar to the eight-year, $72MM deal former teammate Jeff Skinner just had bought out by the Buffalo Sabres. Skinner doesn’t seem to be in much of a place to vindicate the deal’s second half but it was enough to control him through strong seasons with the Sabres. Reinhart, who has performed at a higher and more consistent level than Skinner, could make a structure like this look much better, likely won’t be as quick to fall off; though Skinner’s buyout could be a good forewarning to the Panthers to avoid long term.

That structure would leave Florida with just over $10MM for the rest of their summer. That certainly won’t be enough to make all of the moves they’d surely like to make, including bringing back Montour after a career-high 73 points last season. Montour brought that scoring back to 33 points this year, though he’s still commanded a prominent role in Florida’s top-four. The Panthers have been rumored to be shopping around star defenseman Aaron Ekblad, which would open the cap space to move forward with Montour and Gustav Forsling as a top pair.

But even that could be a tall order as teams face more cap headaches than anyone wants. Florida is among the most stressed, as they look to build back as best of a lineup as they can while sticking to their budget.

Blackhawks Select Artyom Levshunov Second Overall

With the top pick of the rest of the draft, the Chicago Blackhawks have selected Artyom Levshunov with the second overall pick. The product of Michigan State University is the first defenseman to come off the board in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Levshunov made a statement for the Spartans during the 2023-24 NCAA season, earning All-Big Ten First Team and All-Big Ten Freshmen Team honors. Additionally, the young Belarusian won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Becoming one of the best all-around defensemen rather quickly — Levshunov scored nine goals and 35 points in 38 games while collecting a whopping +44 rating. Leading the blue for Michigan State, the team soared to the fifth-ranked team in the nation and made it to the Second Round of the Frozen Four tournament.

In Chicago, Levshunov quickly becomes the best-ranked defensive prospect in the system. As a right-handed shot, Levshunov should fit in nicely next to Kevin Korchinski on the Blackhawks’ blue line long term.

Out of the gates, Levshunov should be able to keep up fairly well defensively with the rest of the NHL, but his offensive capabilities may take a bit to develop fully. He shows top-tier explosiveness and can join the play very quickly. Furthermore, he has demonstrated the ability to make quick shots off the stride which is rare for a defenseman.

Steven Stamkos Expected To Reach Open Market

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos is expected to reach the open market, his agent shared with Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic (Twitter link). Stamkos has been a pillar of the Tampa lineup since his first-overall selection in the 2008 NHL Draft. He’s since accomplished it all in Tampa Bay – claiming the franchise record for games played, goals, and points; succeeding Vincent Lecavalier as captain in 2013; and leading Tampa to back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.

Not to be outdone, Stamkos followed the Cup wins with the first 100-point season of his career in 2022. He since shown zero signs of slowing down, recording 34 goals and 84 points last year and 40 goals and 81 points this year. Through his seasons that weren’t limited by injury, Stamkos has failed to reach 50 points just once – in 2008-09, when he scored 46 points as a rookie. He’s since been as consistent of a scorer as teams could ask for, still offering high-end goal-scoring at the age of 34.

The Lightning are in the rare position to stomach losing a consistent 80-point scorer, thanks to Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point’s continued challenging of the 100-point mark. But Tampa will still need to find a way to replace the reliable upside that Stamkos brought year after year, should he move away from the club. That could be a very tough bill to meet as the Lightning boast just $5.335MM in projected cap space, with seven pending free agents on their NHL roster. That includes winger Anthony Duclair, who scored eight goals and 15 points in 17 regular season games after Tampa Bay acquired him at the Trade Deadline. Duclair had a career year in 2021-22, scoring 31 goals and 58 points, though he’s failed to reignite his scoring since. While he’s bound for a pay raise after a hot second-half to the year, Duclair could be a cheaper option with scoring upside to try and fill Stamkos’ top-six role.

Meanwhile, the question of what Stamkos’ next contract could look like is seemingly impossible to answer. He’s nearing the end of his career but still seems fit for a few more years in the league. And he’ll undeniably be among the year’s highest paid players, after concluding an eight-year contract with an annual cap hit of $8.5MM. There seems to be no price he couldn’t demand after potting 40 goals this season. At the very least, he likely isn’t set for a pay cut. And he’s a future Hall-of-Famer entering the open market, which could quickly inspire a bidding war.

Tampa Bay is at risk of losing the face of their franchise for much of the 2000s. That will be an impossible role to fill, especially with such limited cap space. Meanwhile, Stamkos will plan for a rare career-first in free agency – and surely plenty of interest from around the league.

Canadiens, Kings Swap First Round Picks

The Montreal Canadiens have traded up to pick 21 in the 2024 NHL Draft, sending the Los Angeles Kings picks 26, 57, and 198 in return, per Dennis Bernstein of The Fourth Period (Twitter link).

Montreal, who also owns pick five, brings their two day-one selections just hours before they’ll take the podium. And they may not be done, per TSN’s Darren Dreger, who shares that the team is interested in finding another way into the Top 10, even if it means moving down from fifth overall (Twitter link). Dreger also mentions that Montreal is involved in player trade-talks as well, potentially opening the team up to an incredibly eventful day as they’re getting settled in to Vegas.

The 2022 NHL Draft marked the first time that Montreal has had two first-round picks since 2007 when they drafted Ryan McDonagh and Max Pacioretty. The team succeeded those picks with Juraj Slafkovsky and Filip Mesar in 2022 – and is now looking to make the most of the pair of picks in a strong 2024 first round. The class features talents at every spot, with players like Cole Eiserman and Berkly Catton bringing high skill to the wings, Michael Hage and Trevor Connelly standing as high-scoring centers, and Carter Yakemchuk and Anton Silayev potential fallers on defense. Even at five and 21, the Canadiens should have plenty of opportuntiy to bring in impactful lineup pieces.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles builds out their pool of future assets without losing too much stock on day one. It will be L.A.’s first time in the first round since 2021, when they selected Brandt Clarke eighth-overall. The Kings now have six picks in this year’s draft, more than they wielded in either 2021 or 2023, though three of their selections come in the sixth and seventh rounds. The Kings could afford some robust additions to their prospect pool, with little to look at besides Clarke and Jordan Spence. That should set the team up to take the best player available at each of their selections, regardless of positioning, as they look to find players who can quickly support their drive back to the postseason. At 25, they could be within reach of hardy forwards like Emil Hemming, Cole Beaudoin, and Jett Luchanko.

Derick Brassard Announces Retirement

NHL journeyman forward Derick Brassard has retired from the NHL, he tells Mathias Brunet of Canada’s La Presse. This news will keep Brassard from making a return after suffering a torn ligament in his ankle during a game against the Philadelphia Flyers on March 30th, 2023. It was the same injury that kept Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev out of the start of this season, with Brassard sharing that the two were in touch to discuss recovery. Brassard added that he feels he could have pushed to play in the latter half of this season, though changes in coaching and lineup makeup weren’t worth pushing his health. He told Brunet, “I was starting to find [playing] heavy. I was often on the therapist’s table playing as many matches as possible. It’s frustrating when you’re not 100% for your match. I still scored 13 goals [in 63 games] my final year. I could have pushed, but with the ankle, it was enough. I didn’t want to risk another operation.”

Brassard is calling quits to a very fruitful career in the hockey world, kicking off with his sixth-overall selection in the 2006 NHL Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Brassard played one more year of juniors hockey before turning pro in the 2007-08 season. He’d receive 17 NHL games in his first pro year, though most of his time was spent in the minors, where Brassard scored 64 points in 55 games through the regular season and playoffs. That hot year would go down as the only AHL season of Brassard’s career, as he quickly vindicated a role in Columbus’ middle-six in 2008. That’s where he’d stick for the next five seasons, before being traded to the New York Rangers in 2013 in a deal that sent Marian Gaborik the other way. Brassard would see his best years in New York, scoring a career-high 60 points in the 2014-15 season and totaling 44 points in 59 postseason games across his four years with the club.

Brassard left New York in 2016, kicking off a tour across the NHL. He’d go on to play in seven more seasons, though never spending as long as two years with the same club. His tour involved tenures with the Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Colorado Avalanche, and Edmonton Oilers – though Brassard was never able to recreate the personal or team success that he found in New York. His career now ends with 215 goals, 545 points, and 465 penalty minutes across 1,013 games.

Florida Panthers fans are breathing a big sigh of relief this morning, with both star defender Aaron Ekblad and Vezina-finalist goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky good to go after missing the team’s Sunday morning practice, per Colby Guy of Florida Hockey Now (Twitter link). Neither player were limited in the team’s Game 6 loss – with Bobrovsky facing 19 shots and Ekblad playing 21:37 in ice time – suggesting that their absences were merely for maintenance. Still, every update matters as the Panthers look to skid three straight losses in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Edmonton Oilers have outscored Florida 18-t0-5 over that stretch, with Bobrovsky posting a collective 0.793 save percentage. The Panthers will now return home for a winner-takes-all Game 7, seemingly still at full strength.

  • In the name of fairness, the Oilers are facing an injury scare of their own, with former-100 point forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins missing the team’s Sunday practice with illness, per Jim Matheson of NHL.com (Twitter link). Nugent-Hopkins has been one of Edmonton’s top contributors this postseason, recording 22 points in 24 playoff games. That includes two points in Edmonton’s three-game win-streak – so far his only scoring in the Stanley Cup Finals. Nugent-Hopkins would leave a major role vacant should he be unavailable for Game 7, though there’s been no indication that Edmonton is expecting him to sit.
  • Pittsburgh Penguins winger Reilly Smith has changed agencies ahead of the final year of his contract, now represented by CAA Hockey, per PuckPedia (Twitter link). CAA is the choice agency of many NHL stars, including Sidney Crosby, Matthew Beniers, Mathew Barzal, and Cole Caufield. It’s also the agency most akin to changing scenery – representing the recently-traded Pierre-Luc Dubois, rumored trade chip Rutger McGroarty, and hardened trade rumor veteran Jack Eichel. Smith takes on the new representation while looking to vindicate his final year at a $5MM price tag, though his 13 goals and 40 points last season fell short of expecations.

Afternoon Notes: Clune, Devils, Kane, Holloway

The Anaheim Ducks have hired former player Rich Clune as an assistant coach, shares Chris Johnston of The Athletic (Twitter link). Clune has spent the last two seasons as a development coach with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, joining the team he once captained immediately following his 2022 retirement. Clune added a role behind the bench last season, and will now get a chance to do the same at the NHL level.

Clune was a career minor-league bruiser, who played in just two full NHL seasons as part of his 15-year career in North American pros. He scored a career-high nine points in 47 games during the 2012-13 season, swapping record stats in the following year with seven points and a career-high 166 penalty minutes in 58 games. Clune would go on to play just one more NHL game in his career, though he did total an impressive 593 career games in the AHL – recording 151 points and 1,607 penalty minutes.

  • The New Jersey Devils have signed a two-year extension with ECHL affiliate the Adirondack Thunder. The two teams have been partnered since 2017-18, following a brief connection between Adirondack and the Calgary Flames. The Thunder have only missed the playoffs once in their six-year connection with New Jersey, though they’ve failed to make it past Divisional finals.
  • The Edmonton Oilers could welcome winger Evander Kane back to the lineup on Friday, with head coach Kris Knoblauch designating him a game-time decision to Dan Rosen of NHL.com (Twitter link). Kane hasn’t played since Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals, and hasn’t scored since Game 5 against the Dallas Stars. In total he has just eight points in 20 games this postseason, though his aggression and grit will be a welcome boost over Dylan Holloway, who’d stand to lose his role should Kane step back in, shares Renauld Lavoie of TVA Sports (Twitter link).

Snapshots: Pinto, Gomez, Demidov

The Ottawa Senators and forward Shane Pinto are discussing the possibilities of a two-year bridge contract, shares Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen. Garrioch adds that Ottawa still prefers to sign Pinto to a deal closer to five or six years in length, though they’re off-put by Pinto’s request for $5MM-a-year on a long-term deal. Pinto is coming off the end of a year he’ll want to forget quickly, having been suspended for half the season for violating the league’s gambling policy and only scoring 27 points in the games he did play in.

Pinto scored 20 goals and 35 points as a rookie last season, appearing in all 82 games. The performance stamped him as one of Ottawa’s most promising young players, though his extended absence this year kept him from truly breaking out. The Senators will be hoping for that breakout on the first year of his new deal – and get the dreaded task of putting a number to their faith this summer.

  • Legendary New Jersey Devils forward Scott Gomez has taken to hockey management, assuming the general manager role and head coach for the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles (Twitter link). Gomez played in one season with the Eagles in 1996-97, posting 124 in 56 games as part of a championship-winning Eagles offense. He spent his next two seasons with the WHL’s Tri-City Americans, before beginning an iconic NHL career, including two years as the assistant coach of the New York Islanders from 2017 to 2019. Gomez took a break from the game after that tenure, returning with an assistant coaching role with Surry this season. He’ll now kick off his managerial career in the same place he started his playing career, certainly looking to achieve the same results.
  • Top 2024 NHL Draft prospect Ivan Demidov was dismissive when asked when he expects to move to North America in an interview with Scott Powers of The Athletic, saying only, “We’ll see what happens.” Demidov has been entrenched in rumors early in his hockey career, with many speculating that he and defenseman Artyom Levshunov are the top options for second overall. One of the few knocks against Demidov’s game has been his limited exposure to the KHL – instead playing nearly all of his hockey in the MHL, Russia’s U21 league. He similarly played off the question of whether he expects more KHL ice time next season, saying he wasn’t sure and likely wouldn’t know until after the draft. While neither answer was an outright no, Demidov’s uncertainty certainly doesn’t elicit excitement. He’ll remain an incredibly skilled player, surrounded by a litany of questions, as June 28th’s First Round draws closer.
