Colorado Coaching Search Down To Four

August 18, 2016 at 4:07 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

The Denver Post’s Mike Chambers reports today that the short list of candidates for the vacant head coaching job with the Colorado Avalanche is down to four, three of which would be first-time NHL skippers: Jared Bednar, Travis Green, and Lane Lambert as well as Scott Arniel. Following the unexpected departure of Patrick Roy last week, the Avs have had to move quickly to fill their major hole, and will reportedly begin preliminary interviews with these candidates as soon as possible.

Bednar, who many may consider the top contender for the job, is the head coach of the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters (formerly Lake Erie Monsters) and led the Columbus Blue Jackets affiliate to a Calder Cup championship last year. At just 44, Bednar was able to work with a young group of players to pull off a dominant run to the top in just his second year on the job. With another young group in need of leadership in Denver, Bednar would appear to be a good fit for an Avs squad that has just missed the playoffs in each of the past two years and is in need of some enthusiasm and motivation.

Another former Blue Jackets employee, Arniel was head coach in Columbus in 2010-11, before getting fired midway through the 2011-12 season with a combined record under .5oo. However, at just 53 years old, Arniel presents a candidate who is young, but also has NHL head coaching experience with some success, as well as a plethora of time as an AHL head coach and NHL assistant coach. Arniel may be the most prepared to step in and take over in Colorado with such a short time left before the kick-off to the 2016-17 season.

Green’s is a name that has been thrown around a lot recently as a top candidate for head coaching vacancies around the league. A veteran of 15 years in the NHL with the Islanders, Ducks, Coyotes, Leafs, and Bruins, Green has since quickly worked his way up through the coaching ranks with success at every level. A gritty player who now brings a tough game behind the bench, a Colorado team that often struggles against the rougher Western Conference competition would benefit from Green’s guidance.

Lambert, currently an assistant coach with the Washington Capitals, spent seven years as a coach with an Avs’ division rival, the Nashville Predators, first as AHL head coach and then as NHL assistant coach, before moving to the Caps in 2014. Well-respected across the league, including by former Quebec Nordiques teammate and Colorado GM Joe Sakic, it seems like only a matter of time before Lambert gets his own head coaching gig, and it might just come with the Avalanche.

Snapshots: Pavelski, Trouba, Orlov, DiPauli, Sobotka

August 18, 2016 at 2:30 pm CDT | by Bill Morran Leave a Comment

According to CSN Bay Area’s Kevin Kurz, Sharks captain Joe Pavelski is expected to be named captain of Team USA at the upcoming World Cup of Hockey. After being named San Jose’s captain last October, Pavelski led the Sharks to their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Sharks managed to do this despite whatever acrimony may have been caused by having two veteran stars, Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, who had previously been stripped of the captaincy. The captain of the last American Olympic team, Zach Parise, is expected to play in this tournament.

Pavelski, 32, is the second oldest American player at this tournament, two months younger than Boston’s David Backes. He has scored 116 goals over the last three seasons, second only to Alex Ovechkin in that time. He also led this year’s playoffs in goal scoring with 14. Pavelski has previously represented the United States at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics, as well as the 2009 IIHF World Championships.

Here are some more links from around the league.

  • Being out of a contract won’t stop players from appearing at the World Cup. Kurt Overhardt, the agent for Winnipeg Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba confirmed today that his client will still suit up for Team North America. Mark Gandler, the agent for Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov, told the Washington Post that Orlov will still play for Russia.
  • CBC’s Tim Wharnsby reports that the Penguins will sign free agent forward Thomas DiPauli from the University of Notre Dame. His agent, Peter Fish, called this report “a little premature,” adding that “nothing has been signed or agreed to yet.” DiPauli was a fourth round pick of the Capitals who, like Jimmy Vesey, went unsigned and became a free agent. DiPauli scored 14 goals, 32 points in 37 games for the Fighting Irish this year. He was, for two years, a teammate at Notre Dame of Penguins forward Bryan Rust.
  • Despite reports out of Russia to the contrary, St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong says that he spoke with the agent for forward Vladimir Sobotka yesterday, and that he has been assured of Sobotka’s return to the team for this coming season. Sobotka has played the last two seasons in the KHL for Avangard Omsk, but has committed to returning to the NHL this season. Sobotka had nine goals, 33 points in 61 games for the Blues in 2014, his last season in the NHL.

Vesey Sweepstakes Reportedly Down To Seven Teams

August 18, 2016 at 1:00 pm CDT | by Bill Morran Leave a Comment

Update (4:30pm): Make that eight teams. Obviously the Buffalo Sabres are still very much in the mix, but were omitted from the original report because they were not one of the seven teams who met with Vesey today. The Sabres have had months to negotiate with the Hobey Baker winner, after acquiring his rights from the Nashville Predators, but Vesey’s plan has always been to test free agency and hear the pitches of other interested teams. This does not mean that Buffalo is out of the running as a possible destination, only that Vesey has heard their pitch many times and is now considering what other teams have to say as well. It’s eight teams right now, which is hardly narrowing it down, but the next 24 hours should be telling as #VeseyWatch continues.

ESPN’s Joe McDonald reports that the Jimmy Vesey sweepstakes are down to seven finalists. The Blackhawks, Bruins, Devils, Islanders, Maple Leafs, Penguins, and Rangers are all listed as having a shot at the highly sought after winger from Harvard. Five of these teams were previously listed among our own speculative favorites for Vesey, with the Penguins and Islanders making a recent push.

This report would seem to suggest that other teams rumored to have interest, such as the Red Wings, Flyers, Hurricanes, and Blue Jackets, were unable to convince Vesey to join them.

With the exception of the Blackhawks, these are all Eastern Conference teams. Fully half the Metropolitan Division, whose pitches we discussed here, are among the seven finalists. While our above linked preview of Vesey’s free agency discussed what some teams have to offer, the Penguins and Islanders are certainly attractive situations themselves. The Islanders would likely give Vesey an opportunity to play with John Tavares, while beginning his career in New York City. Vesey’s agent, Peter Fish, has spoken positively about the lure of playing in New York. The Penguins on the other hand are the defending Stanley Cup champions, and would give Vesey a very high likelihood of playing regularly with one of Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin. It’s never a bad thing to get to start your career on a line with a veteran superstar.

The Vesey camp says that a decision will not come today.

Metro Notes: Vesey, Lambert, Penguins, Flyers

August 18, 2016 at 11:32 am CDT | by Bill Morran Leave a Comment

The Metropolitan Division seems like ground zero for the Jimmy Vesey sweepstakes. The free agent forward out of Harvard has reportedly received interest from the Devils, Penguins, Islanders, Rangers, Blue Jackets, Hurricanes, and Flyers. Reading through the links, you’ll see that the Flyers and Blue Jackets are not believed to be serious contenders for Vesey, while the Penguins in particular made a strong impression. The Devils have long been considered one of the favorites to sign him, while the Islanders brought along captain John Tavares for the recruitment.

Vesey is said to be holding out until at least Friday to make his final decision. Other teams reportedly pushing for Vesey include the Maple Leafs, Bruins, and Blackhawks. For all our coverage on Vesey’s decision, click here. For more notes from around the Metropolitan Division, keep reading here.

  • Sportsnet’s John Shannon reports that Capitals assistant coach Lane Lambert is among the candidates to take over the Colorado Avalanche head coaching job. Lambert has spent the last two years in Washington under head coach Barry Trotz, and was previously his assistant for four years in Nasvhille.
  • The Wheeling Nailers have signed on for two more years as the Penguins’ ECHL affiliate. The Nailers, based out of West Virginia, appeared in last year’s Kelly Cup Finals, before losing in six games to the Allen Americans. Strangely enough, the Americans are affiliated with the San Jose Sharks, who the Penguins beat in last year’s Stanley Cup Finals.
  • The Flyers have hired Dr. Ben Peterson as their Director of Sports Science. SB Nation’s Flyers site has a rundown of Peterson’s credentials, as obtained from his Linkedin page. It’s some pretty heavy stuff, and given his experience, he appears to go far beyond the data-based analysis that’s easily found online.

Scouting Notes: Speltz, Maloney, Conte

August 18, 2016 at 9:56 am CDT | by Bill Morran Leave a Comment

The NHL season is just a few weeks away, and like coaching staffs and rosters, teams want to have their scouting staff in place soon. Scouts have less to do with the day to day operations of the team, so they’re not as urgently hired. It’s still good to be able to look at players throughout training camp and in the early days of leagues with earlier starts than the NHL. Here are a few notes on teams rounding out their scouting staffs.

  • Las Vegas have hired former New Jersey Devils scouting director David Conte. There had been speculation about Conte joining the Maple Leafs last summer, given his close relationship with GM Lou Lamoriello. The Devils won three Stanley Cups with teams largely drafted and developed by themselves during Conte’s run. As the Las Vegas Review-Journal notes, he’s credited in particular with the drafting of goaltender Martin Brodeur. Other players drafted during Conte’s run in New Jersey include stars like Scott Niedermayer, Zach Parise, Patrik Elias, Petr Sykora, Scott Gomez, and Brendan Shanahan. Las Vegas will have the same odds of winning the 2017 draft lottery as the 28th place team this season.
  • The Flames have added former Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney as a pro scout. Maloney spent nine years as the GM in Arizona, managing to make the playoffs in three consecutive years from 2010 to 2012. This despite the team’s precarious ownership and financial situations. In 2012, Maloney’s Coyotes reached the Western Conference final, before being eliminated in five games by the eventual champion Los Angeles Kings. Maloney was previously GM of the New York Islanders from 1992 to 1995, and for a decade held various positions with the New York Rangers.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have added former Spokane Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz as Director of Western Area Scouting. Speltz has spent the last 26 years as Chiefs GM, making the playoffs 23 times, and winning the Memorial Cup in 1991 and 2008. Speltz refers to it as a “special and bittersweet” day for him, given that he’ll leave a job after 26 years and enormous success. Speltz joins former junior GMs Kyle Dubas (Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds) and Mark Hunter (London Knights) currently with the organization.

Red Wings Notes: Green, de Haas, Trade Targets

August 17, 2016 at 7:59 pm CDT | by natebrown 1 Comment

MLive’s Ansar Khan had a write up on the impact that Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green could have on the power play this season. Khan points out that while the Red Wing power play was ranked 13th in the league, it was still anemic during long stretches of the season. Khan speculates that Green could be placed on the first power play unit after Niklas Kronwall struggled with knee issues and consistency during the season. Green’s skating, puck handling, and play making ability could be the difference for a team trying anything to generate offense during the man advantage.

Green was the elusive right handed defenseman the Wings were looking for, signed to a three-year, $18MM deal prior to the 2015-16 season. Though the returns were not as high as Detroit would have wished, Green had five power play goals. Perhaps more time on the power play would be a positive for both Detroit and Green.

In other Red Wings news:

  • Dana Wakiji writes that Red Wings prospect James de Haas is now one of the “older” guys as he completed his fifth development camp with Detroit. Wakiji reports that de Haas has one more season in college, and is gunning to make the Grand Rapids Griffins roster once the college season ends. Though he’s taken the “long road” through college to the pros, de Haas feels that the extra work–and longer road–has certainly paid off. De Haas hopes that he will “able to sign and make that jump. Obviously it’s all on me, it’s how I play, so I’m excited to prove to them I’m ready and show them. Just got to keep working and be ready for the opportunity.”
  • Dan Rosen writes that the Red Wings may indeed still be looking at Kevin Shattenkirk. With 16 forwards signed, the Red Wings have some pieces to offer. Though Rosen prefaces it by saying it’s a “small chance” something happens in September to acquire Shattenkirk, he adds that it would take a high end prospect to land him. Rosen throws out Anthony Mantha as a possibility, wondering if Detroit would be willing to move the big forward or proven scorers Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar. Rosen argues that anyone not named Dylan Larkin should be on the table for Shattenkirk.

Dallas Stars Notes: Niemi, Lehtonen, Nichushkin

August 17, 2016 at 5:41 pm CDT | by Glen Miller Leave a Comment

The Dallas Stars surprised many by taking the Central Division crown and finishing with the most points in the Western Conference in 2016-17, just one season removed from missing the postseason entirely. Their success was driven primarily by the most prolific offense in the league as Jamie Benn (41), Tyler Seguin (33) and Jason Spezza (33) led the way with hugely productive seasons. However, while the team had no problem putting the puck in the opposition’s net, they did have plenty of issues keeping it out of their own. Along those lines, Jason Brough of Pro Hockey Talk writes that the club’s “biggest question mark” entering the new season remains between the pipes in Big D.

Antti Niemi and Kari Lehtonen combined to stop just 90.6% of the shots they faced during the regular season a year ago. Lehtonen (90.6%) ranked 38th and Niemi (90.5%) 40th overall among qualified net minders in that category. They were even worse come playoff time with neither goalie able to stop 90% of the shots against.

The Stars were thought to be considering the possibility of acquiring another goalie, with Ben Bishop named as one possibility but it’s not clear whether any substantive talks with the Lightning or any other club ever took place. Nevertheless, Jim Nill seems confident his goaltending tandem will rebound enough to give the club at least capable play between the pipes. Each has had success in the recent past and it wasn’t that long ago that Niemi backstopped the Chicago Blackhawks to a Stanley Cup so there is some reason for Nill’s optimism.

For more on the Stars…..

  • In a separate piece for Pro Hockey Talk, Brough identifies Stars winger Valeri Nichushkin as being “under pressure.” Despite playing on the most prolific offensive team in the league, the 21-year-old Nichushkin struggled, netting just nine goals in 79 regular season contests. He followed that up with a lone point, an assist, in 10 playoff games. Nichushkin, the 10th overall selection in the 2013 entry draft, has a ton of ability and as veteran scorers Patrick Sharp and Ales Hemsky each enter the final years of their respective contracts, the club may well need the young Russian to step into one of those spots sooner rather than later.
  • Revisiting the goaltending situation in Dallas, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News addressed a reader’s question on the subject as part of a recent chat. Specifically, Heika was asked how much salary the Stars would need to retain in order to facilitate a trade of one of Niemi or Lehtonen. Heika speculated that any team that would look to acquire either goalie would want Dallas to keep 50% of the player’s salary on their books. On the other hand, Heika says that GM Jim Nill doesn’t seem too keen on the idea and would rather hang on to the duo in the hope that one or both can rebuild value with solid 2016-17 performances. At this point it seems most likely that the Stars will at least open the season with Niemi and Lehtonen manning the net. But should they again scuffle and with plenty of teams perhaps willing to move a goalie prior to the 2017 expansion draft, Dallas could look to upgrade the position ahead of the trade deadline.

Penguins Re-Sign Matt Cullen

August 17, 2016 at 4:04 pm CDT | by Glen Miller Leave a Comment

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed veteran center Matt Cullen to a one-year deal worth $1MM, as reported on the team’s website. As of last week, Cullen was believed to be entertaining offers from at least four teams but evidently chose to remain with the club with whom he just won the Stanley Cup championship.

A veteran of 18 NHL campaigns, Cullen had a resurgent year for Pittsburgh, scoring 16 goals and 32 points while appearing in all 82 games. He was also a key contributor during the Penguins Cup run, netting another four goals and six points in the postseason. Cullen provided tremendous value after converting a PTO into a one-year, $800K deal with the Penguins.

It’s likely Cullen will again reprise his role in the club’s bottom-six, providing a fair amount of offense while also serving time on the penalty kill and taking critical, defensive zone draws. Last season, Cullen led all Penguins forwards averaging 2:32 of shorthanded ice time per contest. He also won an impressive 55.7% of his faceoffs, a figure good enough for 16th overall among players who took at least 500 draws.

The signing does appear to put the Penguins even further over the cap than they already were which suggests GM Jim Rutherford will have some work to do to get the club cap compliant before the regular season begins.

Front Offices On Jimmy Vesey

August 17, 2016 at 2:59 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After completing his meetings with team representatives today (which include names like John Tavares, Jonathan Toews and Auston Matthews) Jimmy Vesey will have to decide where he plays his first professional hockey game. TSN spoke with a couple of front office members about Vesey’s future, and they bring up separate but interesting points:

Brendan Shanahan, President & Alternate Governor, Toronto Maple Leafs (link):

He’s had a fabulous college career, and has earned the right to have this kind of interest from this many clubs, us being one of them. People are attracted to his leadership qualities; captain of Harvard, he’s obviously a very intelligent player on the ice and off, and he’s a guy who seems to have the ability to put the puck in the net, so when those types of players come available people line up.

Brian Burke, President of Hockey Ops, Calgary Flames (link):

If you look at the college free agents, they have made a dramatically insignificant contribution to our league. Tyler Bozak might be the best one. Of the 100 or 150 that have signed, most have very little impact. I think this player is going to play, and make a difference. I think he’s going to be a good player..but if you look at that group and the money the league has spent on their contribution, it’s a pimple on an elephant’s butt.

Back in February, when the Nashville Predators still held Vesey’s rights, GM David Poile spoke about his ability and future with the team:

We’ve had him here for our development camps each of the last two or three summers and he’s grown so much as a player and a person. Physically, he’s ready to play. As far as a college hockey player, he’s dominant in a lot of areas; one of them is his skating. Obviously, offensively he’s put up a lot of good numbers, so we truly believe that he can come in and play right away.

It’s clear that not everyone in the league is sold on Vesey’s ability to step in and be a difference maker at the NHL level, but the amount of teams that have taken meetings with him over the past few days would suggest they believe he at least will be able to step in right away. Vesey, or at least his agent Peter Fish, has only said that he’ll make a decision this weekend at some point.

John Gilmour Signs With New York Rangers

August 17, 2016 at 1:33 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Amid all the Jimmy Vesey discussion, the New York Rangers have signed another NCAA standout. According to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal, John Gilmour, a defenseman out of Providence College has agreed to a two-year deal with the club.

Gilmour, 23, was originally drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2013 but, like Vesey, decided to play four years in college and became a free agent. He was part of the 2015 national champions after defeating Jack Eichel-led Boston University in the final.

Playing in 141 games over his four years, Gilmour scored 65 points including 23 goals. We recently profiled Gilmour when we listed him at #3 on our list of top college free agents, behind just Vesey and Thomas DiPauli, the latter of which was reported earlier today to be in talks with six different teams.

[Related: New York Rangers’ Depth Chart]

The Rangers weren’t going to wait around to dip their toes into the college ranks, and with Gilmour add a young, mobile defenseman to a group that isn’t seen as such. Gilmour will try to crack the roster this year, but may have trouble because of the big deals sitting on their blueline.
