Detroit Red Wings To Start Season With Just 22 Players
The Detroit Red Wings have been right up against, or projected over the salary cap all offseason. Since bringing in Trevor Daley and Luke Witkowski in free agency, the team has admitted they would likely have to make a move to become cap compliant on day one of the season. Injuries could have solved that for them, but now according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press the team plans on carrying just 20 skaters and two goaltenders into the start of the regular season. That’s leaving one empty roster spot in order to become cap compliant.
Detroit currently projects to be $3.72MM over the cap according to CapFriendly, but will be placing Johan Franzen and his $3.95MM cap hit on long-term injured reserve. That will allow them to get under the limit, but still doesn’t give them much room to work with, especially if a deal is made with Andreas Athanasiou at some point. The Red Wings don’t project to have much success this year already, and now it seems like they’re starting behind the eight ball to begin the year.
With Tyler Bertuzzi and Evgeny Svechnikov both on injured reserve as well after sustaining injuries in camp, it looks like newly signed David Booth will be in the lineup to start the year despite being placed on waivers this afternoon. After adding his $700K, the team doesn’t have any room to bring up another roster player. While none of this affects the way the Red Wings will ice a lineup each night, it’s a hard way to start the year. Chasing the cap all season puts them at a disadvantage in trade negotiations, while also making it difficult to bring back Athanasiou even if an agreement is reached. The team still could need to make a trade to help them out in the coming days.
The Red Wings start their season Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild.

Evening Notes: Stamkos, Jagr, Price, Khudobin
The Tampa Bay Lightning’s preseason is over and Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times writes about where the Lightning look to be as the new season gets under way. The key positive to the preseason is that both Steven Stamkos and Ryan Callahan look healthy and ready to go for the regular season.
Stamkos, who had knee surgery in mid-November and missed all but 17 games last year, is healthy and played in four preseason games. Smith referred to Stamkos as looking like he never missed any time, although he is still working on his timing, but looks ready to put up big numbers this year. Callahan has also been healthy, after having surgery on his hip and missing all but 18 games a year ago.
Smith writes that the lines will be totally up in the air as the season begins as the only two players who seem to be definitely together will be Stamkos with Nikita Kucherov, who have been together all preseason. The depth on the team is solid as they still have cuts to make, but top talent like 2017 second-round pick Alexander Volkov are right on the horizon. On defense, the team is expecting Jake Dotchin to have a solid season, despite breaking a team rule that kept him out of all, but one preseason game. He has been paired consistently with Victor Hedman in practice.
- The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford tweets that he believes the St. Louis Blues are still interested in free agent Jaromir Jagr, but it would have to be at less than $2MM, which he doubts would happen. He adds in a later tweet that Jagr would also have to accept a third-line role and second-line power play spot.
- The Athletic’s Paul Campbell (subscription required) breaks down what makes Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price so great, citing his tracking skills, his edgework, puckhandling and his unwillingness to give up on a play. Price, who just signed an eight-year, $84MM extension that kicks in next season, dominated the NHL last season with a 2.23 GAA in 62 games.
- Cam Tucker of NBC Sports writes that Boston Bruins’ backup goaltender Anton Khudobin had an excellent preseason and is forcing the Bruins to make a tough decision at that position. Khudobin, who struggled in limited backup minutes last year, was thought to be in heavy competition with Malcolm Subban as Tuukka Rask‘s backup. Subban, who has also played well in camp, would have to go through waivers if they send him back to the AHL and there is fear a team in need of a backup goaltender might grab the 23-year-old netminder. Khudobin’s solid preseason of allowing just three goals in two games could keep the 31-year-old in Boston another year.

New Jersey Devils Sign Jimmy Hayes
The first tryout-turned-contract of 2017-18? That belongs to forward Jimmy Hayes. While the New Jersey Devils have yet to make an announcement, Mark Divver of the Providence Journal was the first to report that Hayes has indeed made the team and has signed a one-way contract with the team. TSN’s Bob McKenzie has since added that the deal is for one year and $700K.
Divver, who not only covers the Boston Bruins and AHL’s Providence Bruins, is also very involved with the junior and college hockey landscape in New England. When it comes to Hayes, a Dorchester, Mass. native and former Bruin and Boston College Eagle, Divver is as reliable a source as anyone. So even though it comes as a surprise that Hayes has earned a one-way contract, it appears to be true, as corroborated by McKenzie. Hayes was bought out by Boston back in June after a disastrous two-season stint with his hometown team. Acquired from the Florida Panthers for Reilly Smith in 2015, Hayes scored only 34 points in 133 games with the Bruins after recording 35 in his final season in Florida alone. In 2016-17, Hayes posted only five points in 58 games while playing less than ten minutes a night. The fans in Boston turned on one of their own and few were upset when he was cut earlier this off-season.
Yet, Hayes has managed to find a new home in New Jersey. Hayes scored two goals and added an assist in five preseason games and did enough to impress GM Ray Shero and head coach John Hynes. Perhaps the front office and coaching staff see the 20-goal potential that Hayes showed in Florida but which disappeared in Boston. Regardless, Hayes will join a Devils team which could certainly use some added depth and will get the chance to play alongside former Bruins teammate Drew Stafford, who himself was a late, affordable depth addition for the Devils. Hayes could have a bounce-back season and play a solid bottom-six role for New Jersey, but could just as easily be pushed by the Devils’ young prospects and find himself on waivers sooner rather than later.
Snapshots: Gelinas, Harper, Iginla
The Montreal Candiens have yet to cut defenseman Eric Gelinas, in camp on a PTO, but according to TVA’s Renaud Lavoie, an NHL contract is not on the table. Lavoie reports that instead Gelinas has been offered an AHL contract to play with the Habs’ new affiliate, the Laval Rocket. Lavoie is of the opinion that Gelinas will accept the contract and that it could be good for his career. After clearing waivers three separate times last season with the Colorado Avalanche, the league’s worst team, it’s clear that taking a step back and getting a fresh start is not a bad idea for Gelinas. Playing a leadership role in an AHL locker room for a whole season could teach Gelinas consistency and responsibility and a chance at making the Canadian Olympic team would give the 26-year-old the experience of playing an important role in meaningful games.
- Shane Harper tried the PTO route like Gelinas, but rather than settle for an AHL deal, Harper has decided to take his talents overseas. For the Valencia, California native, who was in camp with the Los Angeles Kings, that means choosing to live in a foreign country rather than a half hour from his home town had he signed with the Kings affiliate, the Ontario Reign. Harper has signed with the KHL’s Lada Togliatti, according to a national news source (link in Russian), where he could easily be the best player on a club that has failed to make the playoffs in each of the past three seasons. Harper scored three points in his 14-game “rookie season” with the Florida Panthers in 2016-17 and added 22 more points in 58 AHL games. The article indicates that the KHL was Harper’s first choice once his NHL hopes were dashed this past week.
- One player who has no plans to choose the AHL or KHL any time soon is future Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla. In his “31 Thoughts” article this week, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reveled that the 40-year-old power forward has even denied having any interest in playing for Team Canada in the upcoming Olympics, as his sole focus is on finding a fit in the NHL. Despite a couple good seasons with the Boston Bruins and Colorado Avalanche, the fact of the matter is that Iginla’s production has been steadily declining since he left the Calgary Flames back in 2013. Last season, Iginla only managed a career-worst 27 points, and that is including a strong showing with the Los Angeles Kings to close out the season. There is always the possibility that someone will come calling for the services – especially the leadership and experience – that Iginla brings and remaining dedicated to playing one last season will only help his chances of being signed. However, with the regular season about to begin, the hard truth is that we may have seen the last of Iginla in the NHL, even if he can’t yet accept that.
Montreal’s Holland, Carr Among Seven On Waivers
While Saturday’s group heading to the waiver wire is not as large or containing as many noteworthy names as each of the last few days, it contains over 150 2016-17 NHL games played and a handful of players with some substantial NHL pedigree. The following seven players were placed on waivers today:

The two biggest names on the list are the pair of Montreal Canadiens wingers. Carr, 25, has played in 58 games in the past season and a half with the Habs after signing with the team following a prolific collegiate career at Union College. While Carr only recorded nine points in his 33 2016-17 games, many expected him to take on a larger role this season. Instead, the Canadiens will try to send him down to the AHL to begin the new season. The more surprising decision may be Holland, who signed a two-year deal with Montreal as an unrestricted free agent this off-season. Granted, the reason the 26-year-old was able to sign such a deal was that he was first not qualified by the Arizona Coyotes, but Holland is still a veteran of 243 NHL games and showed promise with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2014 to 2016. Holland is in a very similar situation to Kenny Agostino, recently placed on waivers by the Boston Bruins after signing with the team this off-season. Both have shown ample ability on the ice, but have been unable to show the consistency of an NHL regular. Agostino cleared waivers and Holland may too, but there is some risk involved in this move by Montreal.
Agostino, Pokka, Siemens Placed On Waivers
After the entire crop of players placed on waivers from yesterday cleared, today has just three hitting the wire. Each one of them is an interesting name for various reasons.

Agostino was signed this summer to a one-way, $875K contract by the Bruins after leading the AHL in scoring a year ago. With 83 points in 56 games he was easily the most dangerous forward in the league, but got into just seven games with the St. Louis Blues. His struggle to find a full-time NHL job will continue, as even if he is claimed on waivers there is no guarantee he stays with the club throughout the year. His talent is unquestionable, but after not beating out several rookies in Bruins camp it might be another hard season.
Pokka was selected in the second round, 34th-overall by the Islanders in 2012 and still hasn’t suited up for a single NHL game. Despite strong point totals in the AHL, the defenseman hasn’t ever really shown that he can put together an NHL-caliber game. While many hoped this would be the fall he would show off an improved two way game in training camp, it never materialized. He’s a real threat to be taken by a defense-strapped team looking for a rebuild, as he’s still just 23 and has some potential left.
Siemens may be the most disappointing of the bunch. A former 11th-overall pick, the Colorado defenseman has never shown anything other than size in his professional career. Though there was some hope he could turn into a shutdown blueliner, his skill (or lack thereof) with the puck on his stick has continually held him back. Though he showed some promise at the end of last year, he couldn’t even make the Avalanche, who are as starved for defensive help as anyone in the league. He’ll likely slip through and try to build his value back up in the AHL.
