The Buffalo Sabres, already without two of their top defensemen, will now also be without veteran blue liner Josh Gorges for what head coach Dan Bylsma says will be “weeks,” tweets Joe Yerdon of NHL.com. Gorges suffered a non-displaced fracture in his foot and according to Yerdon was seen in a walking boot yesterday.
The Sabres have been without the services of Zach Bogosian and Dmitry Kulikov since early November, weakening a blue line not considered to be particularly deep to begin with. Bogosian has missed a month with a sprained MCL while Kulikov has been out for three weeks due to an undisclosed injury. However, Yerdon reports that Kulikov is now considered day-to-day, suggesting he could return to the lineup relatively soon.
The Sabres are calling Taylor Fedun questionable for tomorrow’s game and if he can’t go, the team will have to call up a defender from Rochester of the AHL. Speculatively, Casey Nelson, who already has made eight appearances for Buffalo this season, could be the choice if a recall is necessarily.

- The Florida Panthers announced that they have recalled forward Paul Thompson from Springfield of the AHL. Thompson leads Springfield in several offensive categories including: goals (six); assists (nine); points (15); power play goals (three) and; shots on goal (64). He has appeared in 20 contests so far this season for the Thunderbirds. Thompson, 28, has just three NHL games of experience under his belt, all coming last season with New Jersey, and has yet to record a point. George Richards of the Miami Herald reports that Thompson’s recall was necessitated by an injury to Jonathan Marchessault last night in Ottawa.
Zach Bogosian Out “Weeks” With Sprained Knee
The Buffalo Sabres will be without one of their top defencemen for almost a month, as it was announced today that Zach Bogosian will be out for a few weeks with a sprained knee. The injury was first sustained on Tuesday night against Minnesota, when Bogosian needed to leave the game in the first period.
After an injury plagued 2015-16 that saw Bogosian only suit up in 64 games, he was expected to log big minutes for a young Buffalo club as they tried to climb out of the bottom of the league. Instead, the team will have to look elsewhere to fill his skates, perhaps leaning a bit more on veteran Cody Franson on the right side.
Buffalo has already had to endure injuries to star forwards Jack Eichel and Evander Kane, and losing Bogosian doesn’t help matters. With the team on a surprising three game winning streak, they’ll bring in the upstart Maple Leafs tonight for a matchup of rebuilding clubs. Bogosian likely would have been given the assignment of containing one of Toronto’s young guns, Auston Matthews or Mitch Marner. Casey Nelson will likely figure into the lineup playing on the right side, though it’s unclear who he’ll be paired with.
Buffalo Sabres Recall Hudson Fasching, Casey Nelson
After being sent down just two days ago, the Buffalo Sabres have brought Hudson Fasching and Casey Nelson back to the NHL. Both players started the year with the club and seem destined to bounce back and forth this season.
Earlier this summer, we profiled Fasching as a possible impact rookie this season after a successful World Champioship stint with team USA. The 21-year old was a point-per-game player in his final season at the University of Minnesota, leading the team in goals with 20.
If Fasching could establish a spot in the top-six, he may be able to make an impact as quickly as this season. His size, strength and skill around the net may make him an effective NHL goal scorer when paired with some of Buffalo’s elite playmakers.
For Nelson, it’s a bit of a different story. An undrafted defenseman out of Minnesota State University, he’s already 24 and doesn’t come with quite the pedigree of Fasching. His performance however at every level has been excellent, including notching four assists in his seven game trial last season with the Sabres. As a right-handed shot, Nelson has some big names to try and leapfrog – the Sabres currently have Zach Bogosian, Cody Franson and Rasmus Ristolainen on the right side.
Rumor Roundup: Bogosian, Kulikov, Trouba
Rumor season is alive and well as we head towards the NHL Entry Draft and free agency. While fans salivate at the possibilities, and reporters fight for any scrap of information, here are some of the rumors that are floating around the league right now:
- In an offseason that will be spent trying to find a number one (not to mention two, three, and four) defenceman, David Staples of the Edmonton Journal hears that the Oilers are interested, at least somewhat, in Buffalo Sabres blueliner Zach Bogosian and have been since last season. While it doesn’t seem likely that the former third overall pick would be on the move to Edmonton due to his no-movement clause, Buffalo may try to get him to waive it in order to move his contract.
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com hears that the Boston Bruins have interest in Florida defenceman Dmitry Kulikov and have at least been kicking the tires on a possible trade. The 25-year old has just one year remaining on his contract at $4.3MM before he would become a (much sought after) UFA. The Panthers have a lot of young players that they need to get signed over the next year and a half, with Aaron Ekblad, Jonathan Huberdeau, Reilly Smith and Alex Petrovic all restricted free agents after next season.
- After rumors swirled this week about the Colorado Avalanche’s interest in Jets’ defenceman Jacob Trouba, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post asked GM Joe Sakic about it: “There’s a lot of speculation out there. All I can tell you is we’ve had conversations with different teams and we want to try to improve our crop.”. Trouba is sure to be sought after by many teams if the Jets do indeed make him available this summer. The 22-year old is a former ninth overall pick, is an RFA for the first time this summer and has performed well in his three NHL seasons.
