Sharks Reassign Ethan Cardwell To AHL

With the NHL now off for the next three days, there have been a handful of roster moves around the league today.  The new rule saying that players must play in at least one AHL game if they’re sent down has limited the number of moves but San Jose was among those to make one.  Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News relays (Twitter link) that the Sharks have assigned winger Ethan Cardwell to AHL San Jose.

The 23-year-old was recalled a little more than a week ago following injuries to forwards Will Smith and Philipp Kurashev.  Since the promotion was so recent, Cardwell remained eligible to be sent down even with the roster freeze in effect.

Cardwell got into three games with the Sharks on this stint, bringing his season total to seven.  However, the most recent one – last night against Vegas – was particularly tough as he was on the ice for four goals against despite playing a season-low 9:48.  He didn’t pick up any points over those three outings, keeping his total for the campaign at one, a goal scored back in early November.

Cardwell has spent the bulk of the season with the Barracuda but injuries have limited him to just 14 games.  He has been productive in those outings, however, with three goals and six assists.

With the move, San Jose now has one open roster spot.  They can either choose to fill it by calling someone else up as early as Saturday or, if Kurashev is able to return, he can be activated into that vacancy.

Sharks Place Will Smith, Philipp Kurashev On IR

The Sharks will be without forwards Will Smith and Philipp Kurashev for at least their upcoming three-game homestand, if not longer. The team announced both have been placed on injured reserve with undisclosed issues and did not issue timelines for their return. Their roster spots have gone to wingers Ethan Cardwell and Igor Chernyshov, who were recalled from AHL San Jose.

Smith and Kurashev both departed Saturday’s 6-5 comeback win over the Penguins prematurely. Smith was forced out early in the third period after taking a crushing hit from Pittsburgh defender Parker Wotherspoon (video via JD Young of Locked on Sharks). Kurashev left in the second period after losing his balance on the forecheck and sliding hard into the boards.

Smith’s absence is of special concern to the Sharks, who are hanging onto the second wild-card spot in the West despite continued league-worst underlying numbers. The 2023 No. 4 overall pick has firmly emerged as a top-line piece, stapled to Macklin Celebrini’s wing since the beginning of the campaign. Unsurprisingly, he’s second on the team in scoring with 12 goals and 29 points in 33 games, averaging 17:55 of ice time per game. That’s up by more than two minutes over his rookie outing last year, putting him on pace to easily surpass his 18-27–45 scoring line in 74 games in 2024-25.

That is, of course, assuming his absence isn’t an extended one. The Sharks have a relatively easy upcoming schedule with three out of their next five games against teams that didn’t make the playoffs last year. Getting out of that stretch with three wins, particularly if Smith doesn’t miss much more than the week required by IR, would be a major gain in their still-slim but increasingly realistic playoff hopes.

Kurashev’s absence is also of significant consequence. He’d logged time with Celebrini and Smith this season on occasion when Tyler Toffoli wasn’t with them on the top line. He would have been the first name to step in alongside Celebrini and Toffoli with Smith out, leaving San Jose without two top-six options for the time being.

The 26-year-old was non-tendered by the Blackhawks last summer. San Jose picked him up on a one-year, $1.2MM deal when free agency opened. So far, it’s been one of the better buy-low signings of the offseason. He hasn’t recaptured the heights of his 54-point campaign with Chicago two years ago, but he has been a versatile piece for the Sharks, providing valuable secondary scoring. He’s seventh on the team with 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 31 outings while averaging over 16 minutes per night, routinely featuring on their second power-play unit.

San Jose, still not fully exited from its rebuild, still has a pair of fairly high-ceiling options to replace them with. Cardwell, 23, has already worked his way up into being a trusted recall option for the Sharks after being a fourth-round pick in 2021. He’s got 10 NHL appearances to his name over the past year and has scored his first two NHL goals. It’s his second recall of the campaign after being summoned for more than a week in early November.

Cardwell was an immediate scoring threat in the minors, scoring 23 goals in 71 games for the Barracuda as a rookie in 2023-24. He’s kept his point production up and has nine points (three goals, six assists) in 14 appearances this year. A high-motor winger, he doesn’t have the raw offensive skillset to truly stand out in a San Jose prospect pool ripe with first-round picks and more high-end sleepers, but he hasn’t looked out of place at all in his first few NHL chances.

The real headliner, though, is Chernyshov. The 20-year-old Russian was the first pick of the second round in 2024 at No. 33 overall, later than most thought he would go. So far in his development, he’s proven the Sharks – and the public – right. After spending his pre-draft development in his native Russia, Chernyshov immediately signed his entry-level deal with San Jose and came to North America for the 2024-25 campaign. While an injury limited him to 23 games with the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit, he was the top scorer in major junior hockey on a per-game basis. With 19 goals and 36 assists for 55 points, he racked up an incredible 2.39 points per game.

What’s perhaps most intriguing is the niche he fills in San Jose’s prospect pool. At 6’3″ and 205 lbs, he could bring a needed power forward element to the Sharks’ top six forward group in short order. Now making the jump to the pros this year, he’s well on his way toward doing so. He leads the Barracuda in scoring with 11 goals and 23 points in 25 games. He entered the season as the Sharks’ No. 7 prospect (according to Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff) but has moved up at least two spots with Yaroslav Askarov and Sam Dickinson graduating to full-time roles.

If the Sharks don’t want to do major surgery on their lineup, it stands to reason Chernyshov could get dropped into the fire as a direct replacement for Smith on the top line with Celebrini and Toffoli, while Cardwell fills in a familiar depth role.

Sharks Activate William Eklund From IR, Reassign Ethan Cardwell

3:04 p.m.: The Sharks have indeed reassigned Cardwell to AHL San Jose to make room for Eklund’s activation, according to Curtis Pashelka of the Bay Area News Group. Cardwell scored once and averaged 12:21 per game during his four-game call-up.

12:28 p.m.: Sharks winger William Eklund will be in the lineup against the Wild tonight, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports. He will need to come off injured reserve. They don’t have an open roster spot and will need to make a corresponding transaction. Since no injuries are lingering on their active roster, that will likely be an AHL demotion – presumably for the waiver-exempt Ethan Cardwell, who projects to exit the lineup with Eklund returning.

Eklund’s IR stint was brief. He only landed there on Saturday to create a roster spot for Ryan Reaves’ activation. He’s missed the last four games after sustaining a lower-body injury against the Avalanche on Nov. 1. During that stretch, the streaking Sharks went 3-0-1 without the services of their third-leading scorer.

One of the first high-end picks in San Jose’s rebuild, the 23-year-old Eklund is in the early stages of his third season as a full-time NHLer. He’s rattled off five goals and six assists for 11 points through 12 games, on pace to breach the 70-point plateau for the first time if he stays healthy the rest of the way. He’s done so without seeing much ice time next to Macklin Celebrini at even strength, instead serving as the top scoring piece on the Sharks’ second line with Philipp Kurashev and Alexander Wennberg.

Collin Graf got the bump in minutes alongside Wennberg while Eklund was sidelined, and the young adept penalty killer managed two assists in four games during the elevation. He should be ticketed for a return to third-line duties next to Ty Dellandrea as San Jose attempts to extend its win streak to four and its point streak to seven. The Sharks haven’t strung together four wins in over four years, last doing so in October 2021.

Sharks Shake Up Lineup With Wlliam Eklund Out, Timothy Liljegren Back

The San Jose Sharks will once again shake up their lineup in the hours ahead of gametime. Top winger William Eklund is out with a lower-body injury, while Timothy Liljegren wil lreturn from a short-term absence, per Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now. The Sharks will operate with 11 forwards and seven defensemen on Sunday, with Ethan Cardwell stepping into the bottom-six for rookie Michael Misa.

Few players would be harder to lose than Eklund. He ranks second on the Sharks with five goals and 11 points through 12 games, only behind Macklin Celebrini (seven goals, 18 points). Eklund has averaged nearly 20 minutes of ice time through the early season, and played as much as 25:29 in a recent overtime win versus the Minnesota Wild. He’s returned as a core piece of the Sharks offense this season, after posting a career-year with 17 goals and 58 points in 77 games last season. His role in the lineup, and performance on the scoresheet, both continue to grow.

That will leave San Jose with an important decision as they reshape the lineup. Collin Graf should be the biggest beneficiary, moving into a top-six that also features Tyler Toffoli and Philipp Kurashev in heavy-use roles. Graf has only scored three points in 11 games this season, but his lack of offense could be offset by Kurashev, who has a dazzling seven points in his last four games.

Still, the need to replace Eklund’s offense makes the decision to scratch Msia all the more confusing. The reigning second-overall pick had a three-game point-streak between October 21st and October 26th, though hasn’t managed any scoring in his last two games. He has, however, offered up a 52.6 percent faceoff win-rate, third-highest among Sharks centers. Misa has experience at center, and on the wing, and could have been an interesting bet for top-six minutes in light of Eklund’s injury. Instead, San Jose will turn towards depth forward and grinder Cardwell, who has four points and 10 penalty minutes in seven AHL games. Cardwell was recalled on Sunday morning in a corresponding move to Ryan Reaves’ placement on injured reserve.

The Sharks will find a silver lining in the return of Liljegren, who has served in a top-pair role for much of the season. Liljegren has only scored three points in nine games, but he and D-partner Dmitry Orlov have posted the best goal-differential of any Sharks pairing at even-strength. Getting him back into the fold after just one game out will be a major relief. Liljegren exited Saturday’s game in the first period, after a puck was deflected into the bunch and hit him in the face.

San Jose will return Liljegren to the lineup alongside rookie Sam Dickinson, who will play in his 10th game of the season. Dickinson hasn’t yet found his first NHL point through nine games. He should be rotated into favorable situations, while Liljegren steps back into an important role next to Orlov.

Sharks Recall Ethan Cardwell, Place Ryan Reaves On IR

The San Jose Sharks have placed winger Ryan Reaves on injured reserve and used the spot to recall winger Ethan Cardwell, per the NHL roster report and Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now. Reaves sustained a lower-body injury in Thursday’s game against the New Jersey Devils. He sat out of Saturday’s win over the Colorado Avalanche. Now, Reaves will also be forced to miss at least the next two games.

The Sharks have spent the season rotating 16-year-pro Reaves in-and-out of the lineup with reigning second-overall pick Michael Misa. Reaves has racked up two goals, two fights, and a minus-three through 10 games. He’s already matched the two points he scored in 35 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season. Reaves is a pure physical presence, and ranks sixth among all active players in career penalty minutes (1,110).

Cardwell will now step up to fill Reaves’ rotating role on the fourth line. He has managed two goals, four points, and 10 penalty minutes through seven AHL games this season. That production ranks Cardwell fifth on the San Jose Barracuda in scoring. Two players ranked above him have more NHL experience – Cameron Lund, who played in 11 NHL games last season, and Colin White, who has 323 NHL games to his name. The Sharks opt for Cardwell over either of those two, likely thanks to his persistence for making plays in the dirty areas of the ice. That drive, and a chippy style, would be welcome on San Jose’s fourth line.

But first, Cardwell will have to break into the lineup. Misa should keep his stake in the lineup with Reaves out. The rookie has generated three points and 11 shots on net over his last five games. He’s also posted an impressive 58.3 faceoff percentage on 24 draws. Should that production be enough to keep Misa in, Cardwell would be left sparring with Ty Dellandrea and Barclay Goodrow for bottom-line minutes.

Sharks Place Barclay Goodrow On IR, Recall Ethan Cardwell

The San Jose Sharks have placed forward Barclay Goodrow on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. He left the team’s Wednesday night loss to the Senators in the first period. Goodrow took a high hit from Ottawa’s Ridly Greig in his first shift and only played through three more 30-second shifts before heading back to the locker room. San Jose made no indication of what specific injury Goodrow suffered, though he’s had bad luck with head injuries –  going on a liquid diet for a month after blocking a shot with his face in a game against Ottawa last December. He’ll miss San Jose’s next three games, at least, with this new IR designation.

Goodrow has struggled to find his footing with the Sharks, standing with just two goals in 25 games this season. He’s recorded 31 shots on net, earning a 6.5 shooting percentage – ranked in the bottom 25 of all forwards to score at least one goal this season. It continues his struggling scoring from last year, when Goodrow posted a 6.6 shooting percentage with four goals in 80 games. Despite the snakebite, he’s still offering meaningful veteran value to a young Sharks lineup – filling a routine role on the second unit of both special teams. San Jose is expected to slot Givani Smith in the lineup in Goodrow’s absence, meaning special teams minutes will need to be distributed around the lineup’s younger options.

In a corresponding move, Ethan Cardwell has been called back to the NHL lineup. He’ll step into the role of extra forward but could work his way into the lineup with an extended recall. Cardwell played in the first three NHL games of his career earlier this season, going without any scoring but recording three shots and five hits. He’s recorded one goal and seven points in 13 AHL games this season, slightly below the scoring pace of his 43-point rookie year last season.

Sharks Activate Macklin Celebrini, Ty Dellandrea From IR

Nov. 5: As expected, Cardwell and Gushchin have been sent down to make way for Celebrini’s and Dellandrea’s activations, head coach Ryan Warsofsky told Pashelka. The Sharks organization later confirmed that Celebrini and Dellandrea have been activated for tonight’s contest.

Nov. 4: Sharks forwards Macklin Celebrini and Ty Dellandrea will make their returns to the lineup tomorrow against the Blue Jackets, they each told reporters today, including Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News. They’ll need to come off injured reserve, meaning the Sharks will have to open up a pair of roster spots in short order.

Celebrini, the first overall pick in this year’s draft, has missed all but San Jose’s season opener with a lower-body injury. The 18-year-old told Pashelka that he sustained it on his first shift, but he still managed to record a goal and an assist in 17:35 of ice time against the Blues. After a 12-game absence, he’ll likely be back centering their first line between William Eklund and Tyler Toffoli. That would leave Mikael Granlund and his team-leading 14 points in 13 games in a second-line role, greatly improving the Sharks’ scoring depth.

After an initial bleak stretch without Celebrini, the Sharks have turned things around – somewhat. They still sit last in the league with a 3-8-2 record, but they’ve won three out of their last four games and have outscored opponents 14-11 during that stretch. It’s certainly a step in the right direction for a club that recently became the first in NHL history to start back-to-back seasons with nine-game losing streaks.

They’ll also have Dellandrea available against Columbus. The 24-year-old had a goal in nine games after being acquired from the Stars over the offseason but sustained a hand injury against the Golden Knights over a week ago. He’s back after missing four contests with the injury, and he’ll almost surely slot back in after playing a season-high 15:13 against the Kings on Oct. 24, his last fully healthy game.

The Sharks have three likely candidates who are waiver-exempt to head to the minors to make room for the duo – forwards Ethan Cardwell, Daniil Gushchin, and defenseman Jack Thompson. San Jose has carried 15 forwards and six defenders at points this season, so they may opt to send down Thompson to get back to that formation, although that’s unlikely given he’s currently ninth on the team in scoring with three assists in six games. Gushchin has just one assist in 10 appearances after cracking the opening night roster, while Cardwell has no points and a -2 rating in three appearances since being called up to replace Dellandrea.

San Jose Sharks Recall Ethan Cardwell, Place Ty Dellandrea On IR

With the ninth-youngest roster in the league, the San Jose Sharks are adding more youth to their lineup. The organization announced they recalled forward prospect Ethan Cardwell from their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda while placing forward Ty Dellandrea on injured reserve.

The Sharks haven’t issued a formal update on Dellandrea’s injury status. Still, the current theory is that he’s dealing with an upper-body injury suffered in the team’s recent game against the Vegas Golden Knights on October 26th. Dellandrea managed 9:02 of ice time before leaving the contest and had previously been ruled out in the team’s win last night against the Utah Hockey Club.

Dellandrea skated in all nine games for San Jose before last night scoring one goal in total on the season. He’s kept his physicality up in his new stomping ground but his defensive play and possession metrics have declined with a weaker supporting cast compared to his time with the Dallas Stars.

On the other side of the roster move, Cardwell looks to make his NHL debut after one full season in the AHL. He scored 23 goals and 43 points in 71 games for the Barracuda in his rookie campaign and has gotten off to a solid start this year with one goal and five points through six contests.

The former 121st overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft won’t crack many lists of top prospects in the Sharks system but could be a boon for the organization toward the bottom of the lineup. Cardwell is a 200-foot player with an aggressive tendency to jump into every battle on offense and defense.

Pacific Notes: Sharks Roster, Sharks Injuries, Karlsson

The San Jose Sharks have collectively cut 12 players from their training camp roster today bringing their total bodies down to 38. In an earlier article, Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News broke down some of the remaining camp battles on the roster with three games remaining in the preseason.

The organization’s forward core appears locked up with the remaining battles set to determine the 13th and 14th forwards on the opening night roster. Pashelka argues that forward Klim Kostin has already earned himself a spot for the regular season as the team would like to avoid putting him on waivers. The final spot remains a big question for San Jose. Will the team opt for an enforcer like Givani Smith to protect the youngsters when needed or look to add more available talent in Ethan Cardwell or Daniil Gushchin? Guschin likely has the inside edge if the team chooses the latter after scoring 20 goals and 54 points in 56 games for AHL San Jose last year.

The Sharks have a bigger question on defense with notable injuries to start the year (more on that later). Jack Thompson, acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning and debuting last season, should be the odds-on-favorite for the seventh defenseman position by the end of training camp. Pashelka warns that even if Thompson represents the youngster with the most professional experience up to this point he still needs to play most nights rather than sit as a healthy scratch if he does make the roster.

Other Pacific notes:

  • Pashelka gave a few updates on the injured members of the Sharks’ defensive core earlier today. He shares that defensemen Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Shakir Mukhamadullin skated today and are still considered day-to-day. Still, their regular season opener availability is questionable. Circumstances appear to be different between the pipes with Pashelka also sharing that Yaroslav Askarov practiced with the team “for a little bit” today. Askarov has not practiced with the team once since the start of training camp a few weeks ago and his presence on the ice is a positive development.
  • Vegas Golden Knights center William Karlsson was not on the ice for practice again today and there appears to be a growing concern he may not be ready for opening night (X Link). It’s been over a week since he took the ice but the organization remains hopeful he will be healthy for the team’s regular-season opener on October 9th. Karlsson is set to be the second-line center for the Golden Knights this season although Nicolas Roy has been filling that void in the lineup for the last week.
