Transactions Notes: Flyers, Pokka, Robins

Earlier today, rather than reporting the transactions they might make, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reported on the transactions that the Philadelphia Flyers won’t be making at the close of the offseason. According to Kurz, the Flyers have no intentions of bringing in anyone on a professional tryout agreement for the team’s training camp.

The news isn’t surprising, considering the Flyers have a fairly saturated forward core, and many of the top remaining free agents play up front. However, it is interesting that Philadelphia isn’t interested in different possibilities regarding their defensive core, especially on the right side.

If the Flyers aim for balanced handedness on defense, they have set themselves up to give bottom-pairing minutes to defenseman Noah Juulsen, who signed a one-year, $900K contract with Philadelphia at the start of free agency. Given that he’s coming off a season-ending injury and didn’t play particularly well prior, Juulsen isn’t expected to raise the Flyers’ competitiveness level significantly. There aren’t many remaining names that may be enticed by a PTO offer, as mentioned before, but veterans Jon Merrill and Erik Johnson could potentially fit the bill, and would each represent an upgrade over Juulsen.

Other transaction notes:

  • A former second-round pick of the 2012 NHL Draft is on the move in the DEL. According to a team announcement, defenseman Ville Pokka has signed with EHC München for the 2025-26 season. It’s been eight years since Pokka has played professionally in North America, but did spent several years in the AHL with the Rockford IceHogs and Belleville Senators. Throughout those four years, Pokka was productive on the offensive side of the puck, scoring 31 goals and 138 points in 289 games.
  • Another former second-round pick is on the move internationally. After scoring eight goals and 24 points in 56 games split between the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda and Senators last season, the Czech Extraliga’s Rytíři Kladno announced they’ve signed forward Tristen Robins. Unlike Pokka, Robins debuted in the NHL, participating in three games for the San Jose Sharks during the 2022-23 season, yet failing to register his first point.

Although he decided to return home and play in the KHL this season, winger Grigori Denisenko hasn’t given up on playing in North America just yet.  In an interview with Championat’s Lev Lukin, the 25-year-old indicated his dream is still to get back to the NHL.  He hasn’t spent much time there lately, however, getting into just seven NHL games over the past two seasons with Vegas.  He spent most of last season in the minors with Henderson and Milwaukee, collecting 17 goals and 21 assists in 65 games and rather than accepting a two-way deal as a Group Six unrestricted free agent and likely starting in the minors again, he’ll try to work his way back with a big season with Ak Bars Kazan.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • Speaking to reporters including NHL.com’s Dan Rosen at the media tour earlier this week, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly provided an update on the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. They have whittled through expressions of interest from both North American and European cities and are about to begin the bidding process.  The belief is that there will be round-robin games on both continents before moving to North America only for the medal round.  Daly added that while they hope to have a qualifying round down the road, that won’t be in place for this particular event.
  • UFA winger Jacob Perreault has a team for the upcoming season as the Bruins’ AHL team in Providence announced that they’ve signed him to a one-year deal. The 23-year-old was a first-round pick by Anaheim in 2020, going 27th overall but he has struggled considerably in the pros.  Last season, he spent time with Montreal and Edmonton’s farm teams, collecting just three goals and 11 assists in 44 games, leading to a non-tender in late June.  Perreault has made one NHL appearance, that coming back in 2021-22.
  • After being non-tendered by Ottawa this summer, unrestricted free agent winger Tristen Robins has reportedly found a place to play. Inside AHL Hockey’s Tony Androckitis reports (Twitter link) that the 23-year-old is set to sign in Czechia with Kladno.  Robins was a 2020 second-round pick by San Jose and was moved to the Sens as part of the Fabian Zetterlund trade at the deadline.  Robins played in 56 AHL games last year, picking up eight goals and 16 assists.  He has three career NHL games under his belt back in the 2022-23 season.

Senators Acquire Fabian Zetterlund From Sharks

4:50 p.m.: Ottawa made the deal official, confirming they’ve received San Jose’s 2025 fourth-rounder.

2:16 p.m.: The Senators are acquiring winger Fabian Zetterlund, right-wing prospect Tristen Robins, and a fourth-round pick from the Sharks in exchange for forwards Zack Ostapchuk, Noah Gregor, and Ottawa’s 2025 second-round pick, per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia was first to report the deal.

Zetterlund broke out in the Sharks lineup last season. He scored a career-high 24 goals and 44 points in what was his first time playing in all 82 games of a single season. The performance was backed by a modest 11.8 shooting percentage, suggesting that Zetterlund could reasonably follow it up this year. He’s done exactly that, with 17 goals and 36 points in 64 games putting him on pace for 22 goals and 46 points across a full season. That’s impressive growth considering the Sharks offense as a whole remains in the bottom-three of goals-per-game average (2.63). Across his four-year NHL career, Zetterlund has totaled 50 goals and 111 points in 227 games.

The Senators will look to bank on Zetterlund’s growing consistency with this move. Ottawa was in need of more wing depth headed into the deadline and manage to boost their depths without giving up the farm. Ostapchuk has served as one of the team’s top prospects in recent years, after Ottawa spent a second-round pick on him in the 2021 NHL Draft. Ostapchuk played his first professional season last year, netting a modest 17 goals and 28 points in 69 AHL games. That scoring wasn’t all too inspiring, but Ostapchuk demanded attention with five points in the first six AHL games of the season this year. That performance earned him a call-up in late October that he vindicated with an assist in his first NHL game of the season.

Ostapchuk has since split time between the top of the AHL lineup and the bottom of the NHL lineup. He’s scored four points in 43 NHL games, but has a far more commendable 11 points in 15 AHL games. Ostapchuk has averaged just 9:20 in ice time at the NHL level this season. That number could be due for a major boost as he heads to the Sharks, who traded away both Luke Kunin and Nico Sturm in advance of the deadline. Those departures leave two holes for bottom-six centerman that could land Ostapchuk north of 15 minutes a night. His six-foot-four, 210-pound frame should take well to the hard-nosed and physical role that Kunin leaves behind.

San Jose could fill their other center vacancy with Gregor, who has spent the full season on the NHL lineup. Gregor has six points, 17 penalty minutes, and a minus-two in 40 games with the Senators this year. It’s a slight downtick in scoring after he managed 12 points, split evenly, in 63 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last year. This will be a reunion tour for the 26-year-old centerman, who was originally drafted in the fourth-round of the 2016 NHL Draft by San Jose. He made his debut with the Sharks three years later and quickly found a rut as a fourth-liner. Gregor totaled 26 goals and 51 points in 178 games with the Sharks across his first tenure with the club. That includes his career-high eight goals and 23 points scored in 63 games of the 2021-22 campaign. San Jose will hope Gregor can return to those numbers this year, as they look to back their young core with a stout veteran presence.

Headed back to Ottawa is speedy winger Robins, who hasn’t quite found his stride in the minor leagues just yet. He has seven goals and 18 points in 41 AHL games this season, the exact same stat line he posted in 42 AHL games last year. Robins was a bit more effective in 2022-23, when he potted 17 goals and 38 points in 64 AHL games and earned the first three NHL games of his career. The five-foot-10, 175-pound forward was once a popular name across the WHL, where he totaled 200 points in 212 games and five seasons with the Saskatoon Blades. He has scoring upside, but needs to find his footing at the AHL level and his physicality at the NHL level. Should Ottawa find a way to tap into that upside, Robins could be a lucrative addition to a deal focused around the swap of Zetterlund and Ostapchuk.

San Jose Sharks Recall Nikolai Knyzhov, Tristen Robins

The San Jose Sharks have recalled defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov and forward Tristen Robins to their NHL roster, according to a team announcement.

Knyzhov, a veteran of 68 career NHL games, last played in the NHL on March 23rd, while Robins, the 56th overall pick at the 2020 draft, hasn’t yet made his NHL debut.

This move comes after the Barracuda were eliminated from playoff contention last night, and they do not play another game until Friday. Seeing as the Sharks play three games this week and finish their season Thursday, these two recalls are a chance for the team to give some NHL games to players without costing them the chance to play in any AHL contests as well.

In 2020-21, Knyzhov looked like a promising up-and-coming defenseman who was playing an increasingly important role with the Sharks. That promising trajectory saw a major interruption because Knyzhov tore his Achilles tendon, and Knyzhov is still working his way back to where he was before suffering that injury.

He looked to be on the verge of establishing himself as an NHL regular, and now he’s played the majority of his games this year in the AHL (19) compared to the NHL (9). Knyzhov’s recent $1.25MM AAV contract extension was a show of faith from the organization to him, and these last few NHL games could help inform how the organization sees him heading into next year’s training camp.

As for Robins, this recall puts him in a position to play his first NHL game. The 21-year-old native of London, England was a second-round selection by the Sharks on the back of an impressive 2019-20 campaign for the Saskatoon Blades in the WHL. Robins scored 33 goals and 73 points in 62 games, and then scored 23 points in the WHL’s shortened 2020-21 season.

Last year, Robins had another strong campaign for the Blades, and showed himself to be ready for the rigors of pro hockey. Robins’ 17 goals and 38 points for the Barracuda this season is a solid showing for a young AHL rookie, and he ranks fifth on his team in scoring.

With the Sharks currently in the midst of a rebuild and looking for players who can be part of their next competitive core, this recall could allow Robins to play in his first NHL game and enter the offseason with a clearer picture and firsthand understanding of what it takes to become a full-time NHLer.
