Ryker Evans

Western Notes: Scheifele, Vilardi, Dunn, Kovalenko

March 14, 2024 at 2:35 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley 3 Comments

The Winnipeg Jets could be getting major reinforcements back soon, with the team hopeful that Mark Scheifele will return to the lineup on Friday, per Scott Billeck with the Winnipeg Sun. Billeck also shared that Gabriel Vilardi will remain out on Friday. Vilardi has been out since February 29th with an upper-body injury, missing the team’s last seven games. The extended absence has continued a season of injuries for Vilardi, who has now missed 27 games on the season.

Scheifele missed Winnipeg’s Wednesday night game with illness. He continues to lead the Jets in scoring, with 19 goals and 57 points in 58 games. The Jets simply haven’t been the same team without Scheifele, averaging a measly 1.57 goals-per-game in his absence compared to 3.22 goals-per-game with him in the lineup – leading Winnipeg to a 2-5-0 record without their top forward.

Scheifele’s importance to the Winnipeg roster can’t be understated, placing plenty of weight on his game-time decision ahead of Friday’s matchup. If he can’t go, the Jets will need to rely on one of David Gustafsson or Rasmus Kupari. Gustafsson has been Winnipeg’s de facto fill-in this year, with four points in 31 games, though Kupari’s role as a natural center could earn him a leg-up, even despite his sole assist through 27 games this season.

Other notes from around the league:

  • The Seattle Kraken will be without defenseman Vince Dunn for the fourth straight game, per Scott Malone with Root Sports. Dunn has been Seattle’s top defender this year, averaging over 23 minutes of ice time for the second-straight season. Dunn has managed 11 goals and 45 points in 57 games on the season, scoring at nearly the exact same pace as he did last season, when he posted a career-high 14 goals and 64 points in 71 games. Without Dunn, Seattle has promoted top young defender Ryker Evans back into an NHL role. Evans has five assists in 19 games this season – the first games of his NHL career – though he’s still searching for his first career goal. Evans has also managed two goals and 15 points in 25 AHL games this year.
  • The Colorado Avalanche could be adding a major boost even after the Trade Deadline, with Russian forward Nikolai Kovalenko reportedly headed to America soon, per Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now, as well as a social media post from Kovalenko’s barber. The Avalanche drafted Kovalenko in the sixth-round of the 2018 NHL Draft, with the winger since emerging as a strong option for the KHL’s Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo. The 24-year-old scored 11 goals and 35 points in 42 KHL games this season, after posting a career-high 21 goals and 54 points in 56 games last season. He will look to carry that same scoring energy onto the high-offense Colorado lineup.

Kraken Reassign Ryker Evans To AHL

January 31, 2024 at 1:25 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 2 Comments

The Kraken reassigned defenseman Ryker Evans to AHL Coachella Valley on Wednesday, a team announcement states.

Evans, 22, was a healthy scratch in four straight games. Seattle begins its bye week after Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to the Sharks, so the 2021 second-round pick will get some more routine playing time in the minors.

The high-end puck-moving prospect had been on recall since Jan. 8, logging over 20 minutes in three of his four games this month. This season is Evans’ first in the NHL, recording four assists in 13 games dating back to his debut on Dec. 7.

Evans led all rookie defensemen with 38 assists in the AHL last season and advanced to the Calder Cup Final with Coachella Valley before eventually losing to the Hershey Bears. It was an electric postseason performance for Evans, though, who put up 26 points in 26 games with a +13 rating.

This season hasn’t been as smooth for the Calgary-born blue liner, who has 12 points and a -1 rating in 22 showings for Coachella Valley. Still, he’s the best defense prospect in the organization and has put up dominant possession numbers in his limited NHL time. That should be taken with a grain of salt, however, as Evans has seen over 70% of his even-strength zone starts come in the offensive end.

Evans has one season remaining on his entry-level contract, which carries an $897.5K cap hit and makes him an RFA in 2025.

Seattle Kraken Recall Ryker Evans

January 8, 2024 at 2:20 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu 3 Comments

The Seattle Kraken have announced that defenseman Ryker Evans has been recalled from the team’s AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Evans, 22, last played for the Kraken on December 27th. He’s spent all of 2024 so far with Coachella Valley, and has done very well there. The Firebirds have collected seven points out of eight available since Evans returned to their lineup, and Evans himself has scored four points in that span of games. That puts him up to 12 points in 22 games at the AHL level, which is not far off from last season’s scoring pace when he put up 44 points in 71 regular-season games.

After a stellar playoff run that saw Evans score 26 points in 26 games en route to a heartbreaking loss in overtime of Game Seven in the Calder Cup final, there was a widespread belief that 2023-24 would be the season Evans broke into the NHL with the Kraken.

The team’s first-ever second-round pick has played in nine NHL games so far this season, averaging 17:58 time-on-ice per game. He’s scored four points in those nine games while also receiving time on the club’s second power play unit.

Evans’ recall gives the Kraken a seventh defenseman on their active roster, and at the moment he figures to be a healthy scratch. With the team beginning a six-game road trip tomorrow, though, he could end up getting into some games seeing as former seventh defenseman Jaycob Megna was recently claimed off of waivers by the Chicago Blackhawks.
