Ryan Callahan Out Indefinitely With Upper-Body Injury

Ryan Callahan played just 8:37 in last night’s game for the Tampa Bay Lightning after crashing into the boards hard, and today has been given a disappointing diagnosis. Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Callahan is out indefinitely with an upper-body injury, and won’t even be evaluated again for at least three weeks.

Callahan was caught up with Coyotes’ defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson in the third period, and suffered an apparent shoulder or arm injury on the play. It’s a tough break for Callahan, who has seen his career derailed by injuries the past few seasons. Once the captain of the New York Rangers, Callahan was a perennial 20-goal scorer who reached a (since matched) career-high of 54 points in 2011-12.

Traded for Martin St. Louis, Callahan had a solid start with the Lightning but played just 18 games last year due to chronic hip issues. He’d worked hard to get back on the ice this year, but had just six points in 29 games playing fewer than 13 minutes a night. At $5.8MM, his cap hit is one of the worst in the league for a player of his production, and after this latest injury you have to start wondering about a potential long-term injury stint once again.

The Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins released a statement saying they will attend an invitation from President Trump to come to the White House. No date has been announced.

The Pittsburgh Penguins respect the institution of the Office of the President, and the long tradition of championship teams visiting the White House. We attended White House ceremonies after previous championships – touring the historic building and visiting briefly with Presidents George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama – and have accepted an invitation to attend again this year.

Any agreement or disagreement with a president’s politics, policies or agenda can be expressed in other ways. However, we very much respect the rights of other individuals and groups to express themselves as they see fit.

  • NHL.com’s Chris Stevenson writes that Ottawa Senators’ star Erik Karlsson skated with his teammates Saturday for the first time since having surgery to repair torn tendons in his left foot on June 14. The star defenseman wore a light blue non-contact jersey while skating, but did not participate in drills. “It’s a positive thing, but we don’t want to get too excited. It’s a second step,” Senators coach Guy Boucher said. “It’s a positive thing, but we don’t want to get too excited. It’s a second step.” Karlsson is expected to take a couple of days off to see how his ankle responds. No timetable has been set as the Senators regular season starts on Oct. 5.
  • NHL.com’s Scott Burnside writes that the Dallas Stars are close to identifying their top-four defenseman as the team is leaning towards Marc Methot, John Klingberg, Esa Lindell and Jamie Oleksiak. The scribe writes that Oleksiak has in particular garnered praise from head coach Ken Hitchcock. “This is now 10 days of hockey for Jamie that he’s played outstanding. If he continues at this pace he looks like a guy that can help,” the coach said. “I don’t think you can win in the National Hockey League unless you can lock down your top four guys.”
  • Tampa Bay Times’ Joe Smith writes that Tampa Bay Ligntning’s Ryan Callahan reported a successful preseason game after playing in his first contest Saturday since Jan. 7. He ended his season after that as a nagging hip injury plagued him to the point that he decided to undergo surgery to correct the problem. The 32-year-old wing only played 8:25, but he said he felt comfortable and felt good playing his physical style 0f game. “I didn’t think about my hip or anything when I was out there,” Callahan said. “It’s a big thing for me to get the first game out of my system, blocking shots, taking some hits, giving some hits. It’s a good step.”

 

NHL Snapshots: Galchenyuk, Vanek, Callahan, Morin

For years, the Montreal Canadiens have been known as a team that changes up their lines constantly. However, Brendan Kelly of the Montreal Gazette writes that talk of a new combination of Max Pacioretty, Alex Galchenyuk and Jonathan Drouin could prove to be one of the stronger first lines in hockey. However, Kelly has his doubts the team would consider putting that line into effect.

To start, the talk of Pacioretty playing left wing and Drouin at right wing makes plenty sense. The 28-year-old Pacioretty has put up four straight 30-goal seasons, including a 35-goal season last year. Drouin, coming over from Tampa Bay, had a breakout year with the Lightning, putting up 21 goals and 32 assists in 73 games. The highly touted 22-year-old forward is expected play a major scoring role in the Canadiens future.

The problem, according to Kelly, is the team has shown little interest in putting Galchenyuk into that top center position over the past two years and nothing has changed. The former third-overall pick in 2012, Galchenyuk had a 30 goal season in 2015-16, but then dropped to 17 goals last year in 61 games after going down with a knee injury. The team even shopped him during the offseason.

Kelly writes no matter how much you like Tomas Plekanec, the 34-year-old is no longer in his prime and shouldn’t be considered for a number one role anymore and probably not a number two role either. After that, the scribe writes that there is little else at the center position, pointing to Phillip Danault, who had a breakout year last year, as nothing better than a No. 3 center on a good team.

The team has never allowed Galchenyuk to settle into a legitimate role on the team and has been bounced around the lineup. However, Kelly writes that a little faith and a golden opportunity could make that first line one of the strongest in the league.

  • Yesterday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman mentions that “it is believed that the Vancouver Canucks are taking a look at Thomas Vanek.” The 33-year-old wing was featured in a PHR poll earlier today on where he might end up. Vancouver, so far, has only garnered 15 percent of the vote. He put up 17 goals and 48 points this past season.
  • Corey Long of NHL.com reports that Tampa Bay Lightning’s Ryan Callahan is progressing well from two hip surgeries since the 2015-16 season. He is participating in informal workouts with no limitations and hopes to be back to health this season. The 32-year-old winger managed to play only 18 games last season and hasn’t put up a quality season since his 24-goal season in 2014-15. He still has three years remaining on his contract at $5.8MM per year.
  • Philly.com’s Sam Carchidi writes that Samuel Morin and Robert Hagg are the leading candidates to win the open defense jobs in training camp over Travis Sanheim and Phil Myers. Morin, the Flyers first-round pick in 2013, is a physical defensive blueliner who stands at 6-foot-7, 227 pounds and should provide the Flyers some much needed size. Hagg, a second-round pick in that same draft, has quite a bit of experience in the AHL and looks ready to take the next step.

 

Breaking Down John Tavares Standoff With Isles

As reported by PHR’s Gavin Lee, New York Islanders’ star John Tavares was quiet when asked about his extension. The 26-year-old was eligible to sign an extension with the Islanders starting on July 1, but after five weeks still hasn’t done it. Speculation suggests that he is keeping a keen eye on two critical elements, including the team’s success as well as whether the team will find a home. He has said he would like to stay in New York and continue to play for the Islanders, but is keeping his thoughts internally.

However, the New York Posts’ Larry Brooks writes that history suggests that what a player says during negotiations doesn’t mean anything. He cites former New York Rangers’ captain Ryan Callahan in 2014 as having said the same thing, only to be traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning after negotiations broke down over a no-trade clause the Rangers didn’t want to include. The scribe writes, however, that these negotiations have little to do with a no-trade clause or even money. The Islanders are willing to offer it all.

Brooks believes that the Islanders’ struggles, despite picking up Jordan Eberle this offseason, might count against the New York team. Tavares has played eight seasons in the NHL and has only made three trips to the playoffs, and only ies. Maybe, he wants more success. On top of that, the team still is having trouble finding a new home for the franchise. Is Belmont Park the answer? Possibly, but it’s not perfect and nothing is cemented in stone. Maybe he wants to wait until that is resolved. Many people compare Tavares to the Steven Stamkos standoff last year, but Tampa Bay had been to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2015 and to a Game 7 in the conference finals in 2016. They were a successful franchise.

While the eight-year contract they can offer to Tavares (as opposed to seven years for any other team) is critical to the Islanders, Brooks questions that advantage as well. Citing the belief that the Tampa Bay Lightning will make a play for the forward, he writes that Florida’s lack of a state tax would save Tavares quite a bit of cash. He writes that if the Islanders offer him an eight year, $80MM contract ($10MM per year), that would leave him with $41.81MM after taxes, according to Brooks. If Tampa Bay offers him a seven-year, $59.5MM deal ($8.5MM per year), Tavares would get to keep $36.28MM after taxes, which is only $5MM less overall. So that eighth year isn’t as big of a factor when dealing with teams that have no state income tax.

There are a lot of maybes, but there is a good chance the Islanders will be forced to trade Tavares if they want to keep their franchise afloat.

 

East Notes: Jagr, Dadonov, Callahan, Penguins

45 year old winger Jaromir Jagr is still looking for a new home after it was recently revealed that the Panthers wouldn’t be bringing him back for 2017-18.  One place he won’t be going is Philadelphia, one of his former teams.  When asked by Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer about bring the veteran back for another stint with the Flyers, GM Ron Hextall had the following to say:

“That’s just not the direction we’re headed in now. I have a great deal of respect for his accomplishments and everything he’s done in the game, but, again, it’s just not the direction we’re going.”

Jagr is the third highest scoring forward remaining on the open market after posting 46 points (16-30-46) in 82 games with the Panthers last season.  He’s coming off a contract that saw him earn $5.5MM between his salary and games played bonuses and will likely have to come in below that wherever he signs on for next year.

Other notes from the East:

  • Panthers GM Dale Tallon envisions big things for recent acquisition Evgeni Dadonov. He told reporters, including Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel, that Dadonov projects to play on their top line alongside Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau.  The 28 year old struggled in his first stint with Florida back from 2009-2011 but is coming off a career season in the KHL where he finished fifth in league scoring with 66 points (30-36-66) in 53 games.
  • After missing 64 games with recurring hip problems last season, Lightning winger Ryan Callahan told Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times that those issues are completely behind him and that are no limitations. Tampa Bay would undoubtedly welcome a healthy Callahan in their lineup to get some bang for their buck; he currently is their second highest paid forward and still has three years left on his deal with a $5.8MM cap charge.
  • The Penguins plan to replace Nashville-bound center Nick Bonino via the trade route, GM Jim Rutherford noted to reporters, including Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He acknowledged that he has been in talks with other teams but so far the prices have been too high for his liking.  Rutherford added that he’s in no rush to find the right fit and that he would be okay if it took until sometime into next season before they acquire Bonino’s replacement.

Lightning Have Not Asked Ryan Callahan To Waive NMC

Despite the fact that the Tampa Bay Lightning have protection issues in their forward group when it comes to the expansion draft, the team has not yet asked Ryan Callahan to waive his no-movement clause, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. If he doesn’t waive it, it would mean he is automatically protected from the draft and the team would be down a protection slot. The deadline to ask a player to waive their clause is 4pm on Monday, giving the Lightning the weekend to decide.

Callahan played just 18 games this season due to a hip injury, and is the Lightning’s second highest-paid forward at $5.8MM per season. That deal has three years remaining on it, and now 32 and several years removed from his last effective season it is one of the biggest problems for a team tight to the cap. Callahan is part of the leadership group on Tampa Bay, and has been an alternate captain for the past few seasons after serving as captain for the New York Rangers. While he’s expected to be ready for the start of the season, his effectiveness is still in question as anything more than a bottom-six player.

With at least eight forwards deserved of protection from the Golden Knights, Callahan waiving his NMC would seem like a smart move for GM Steve Yzerman and company. The effect it may have on player relations though has long been debated, with several executives previously stating that they’d never ask a player to move it. It’s unclear whether Yzerman had to convince (or at least come to some sort of agreement with) Valtteri Filppula to waive his no-trade clause to go to Philadelphia at the trade deadline, as the clause only blocked trades to 13 of the other 29 teams. Filppula did use it to block a deal with the Maple Leafs however, indicating that Yzerman was at least somewhat open to the idea of asking him to waive it.

Regardless, there now is just a few days remaining for Yzerman to change his mind and see if Callahan would waive the clause for the betterment of the team. At very little risk of being selected, Callahan could help the Lightning keep the forwards they want and hopefully keeping the core group together. He did earn the clause with his play though, and has no responsibility to the fans or his teammates to waive it.

News and notes from around the NHL this evening:

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning will be without Ryan Callahan indefinitely, reports Bryan Burns of TampaBayLightning.com. Callahan suffered a hip injury in January but was expected to return last week. There is now no new date for his return as Callahan gets ready for a second procedure to try and fix the issue. GM Steve Yzerman intimated that Callahan will miss the remainder of the season and some of the playoffs, should the Lightning go on a run. The veteran winger has 2G and 2A in 18 games so far. The Lightning—should they put Callahan on LTIR—would be able to exceed the cap by Callahan’s $5.8MM cap hit if they want to load up on trade deadline rentals. They are only 4 points out of a wild card spot with 22 games left to play.
  • Continuing with the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team called up forward Cory Conacher, reports Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. Conacher is currently 9th overall in AHL scoring, and fresh off a two-goal performance last night with the Syracuse Crunch. So far Conacher hasn’t had a proper chance to translate his AHL success to the NHL, but has 1G and 1A in seven games with the big club. Joe Smith speculates that Conacher was recalled just in case Jonathan Drouin cannot play tonight. Lightning Insider Erik Erlendsson reported that Drouin did not practice with the team today.
  • Anaheim Ducks forward Nicolas Kerdiles is set to make his NHL debut tonight against the Boston Bruins, reports Curtis Zupke of the Los Angeles Times. The Ducks drafted Kerdiles 36th overall in 2012, but the Texas native placed in the NCAA for the next two years. He’s played only ten games with the AHL San Diego Gulls this season after suffering his second concussion, but he’s managed to record 4G and 5A those ten games. Early reports have him skating with Rickard Rakell and Corey Perry.

Injury Updates: Stars, Callahan, Nurse, Malkin, Predators

The Dallas Stars got some good news and some bad news on the injury front as they start a three game road trip today in Nashville, writes Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News.  Center Jason Spezza, who has missed the last four games with an upper-body injury, accompanied the team on the trip and head coach Lindy Ruff thinks he’s close to returning to the lineup although he won’t play against the Preds.  Although Spezza is having a down year offensively, he’s still tied for fourth in team scoring with 31 points in 45 games.

The news isn’t so good for blueliner Johnny Oduya.  He has sat out ten straight contests with an ankle injury and isn’t with the team on the trip.  The pending UFA is likely to garner some interest at the trade deadline but it would be much easier for Dallas to move him if he’s back in the lineup for a few games by then.

Right winger Ales Hemsky is also on the trip.  While he’s not expected to play, he is progressing well from hip surgery back in October and Ruff expects him to be ready before the end of the season.

Other injury news from around the league:

  • Lightning right winger Ryan Callahan is slated to be re-evaluated during their upcoming bye week, reports Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. He has missed the last four weeks while rehabbing his hip and doesn’t appear to be close to returning.  It’s possible that if the evaluation comes up poorly that the team could opt to shut the 31 year old down for the rest of the season.  Callahan has been restricted to just 18 games this season where he has two goals and two assists.
  • Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse appears to be ahead of schedule in his rehab from ankle surgery back in December, notes Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun. Nurse has been skating on his own for the last two weeks and is ready to participate in full practices.  The initial time frame for his return was 12 weeks; it has only been eight and considering he’s set to skate with the team, he should be able to play sometime within the next month.  That should be a nice boost for Edmonton’s back end right around the deadline.
  • While it was expected that Penguins center Evgeni Malkin would return to the lineup yesterday against the Coyotes, he was held out of the lineup for the eighth straight game with what is believed to be a lower body injury. Head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters, including Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, that he’s still close to returning but that the doctors and Malkin agreed for him to sit for at least one more game.  Malkin remains eighth in league scoring despite not suiting up since January 24th.
  • Nashville has placed left winger Cody McLeod on injured reserve, reports Adam Vingan of The Tennessean (Twitter link). The nature of the injury is not yet known.  The 32 year old has played in 13 games with the Predators since being acquired from Colorado, scoring three goals while adding an assist.  Vingan also notes that left winger Harry Zolnierczyk has been activated off IR after missing the last three games with an upper body issue.

Ryan Callahan Out Four Weeks

Tampa Bay Lightning right winger Ryan Callahan has had nothing but bad luck when it comes to hip issues this year and that trend will continue as he will miss the next four weeks as the problems linger, the team announced (Twitter link).  He has already missed the last three games because of the soreness.

This isn’t the first time this season that Callahan has missed time due to hip problems as he underwent surgery in the offseason which caused him to miss the first few weeks of the year.  Callahan noted he played with hip pain during the second half of the 2015-16 season.  He also missed 15 games this year while resting the hip from late November into early January.

Callahan has played in just 18 games for the Lightning this season, scoring twice while adding a pair of assists.  He’s signed for three more seasons beyond this one with a cap hit of $5.75MM and while Tampa Bay will be looking to shed some salary this summer, Callahan’s contract and injury problems will make him extremely difficult to move.

The 31 year old is one of four Tampa forwards out of the lineup although Brayden Point is nearing a return to action from his upper body injury.  Steven Stamkos remains out long-term as he recovers from knee surgery while J.T. Brown is hoping to return by the end of the month from an upper body issue.

News and notes from around the NHL this evening:

  • Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray makes his first start tonight since suffering a lower body injury on December 28th. Murray actually returned to action last night against the Washington Capitals but rode the pine as Marc-Andre Fleury’s backup. The Penguins welcome Murray back as he’s earned a .928 SV% and a 2.18 GAA in 19 games this season. That is in contrast that with Fleury’s .908 SV% and 3.12 GAA. Every point matters in the tight Metropolitan division this season, and right now Murray gives the Penguins that best chance to win in the season’s second half.
  • Colorado Avalanche GM Joe Sakic wants to reboot the team to get younger and faster, reports TSN’s Pierre LeBrun this evening (video link). The expectation is that a number of players currently in the AHL with the San Antonio Rampage are ready to step up. But Sakic also admitted that he has been in talks with other teams about undisclosed players. We mentioned here and here that both Gabriel Landeskog and Matt Duchene are also rumored to be traded.
  • Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan will miss his second straight game tonight as he deals with a lower body injury. While the team did not disclose the nature of the injury, many think it’s related to his hip after he underwent surgery on it this season. Callahan is struggling this season, scoring only 2G and 2A in 18 games.
