Maple Leafs Activate Max Pacioretty, Place Jake McCabe On IR

December 7, 2024 at 12:53 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Maple Leafs have made a pair of roster moves heading into tonight’s game against Pittsburgh.  The team announced (Twitter link) that winger Max Pacioretty has been activated from LTIR.  To make room on the roster, blueliner Jake McCabe was placed on IR retroactive to November 30th.

Pacioretty will wind up missing only the minimum of 10 games since his placement last month when he sustained a lower-body injury against Montreal.  The 36-year-old has been limited to just 13 games so far in his first season with Toronto.  However, he has been relatively productive in those outings, collecting four goals and two assists despite averaging just 12:11 of playing time per night, a career low.

Pacioretty has already reached the first half of his $626,230 bonus pool when he played in his tenth game of the season early last month.  He needs to get to 35 to collect the other half of it so he’ll be looking to stay healthy the rest of the way.

As for McCabe, he has missed the last week due to an upper-body injury sustained against Tampa Bay at the end of November.  Thanks to the retroactive placement, he has already missed the required seven days and thus is eligible to be activated as soon as he’s cleared to return.

After putting up a career-high 28 points last season, the 31-year-old earned a five-year, $23.5MM extension back in late October.  However, he has been a bit quieter offensively so far this season, collecting just five assists through his first 23 games although he’s averaging a career-best 21:20 in playing time.  After being a frequent healthy scratch early on, Philippe Myers has played the last three games in McCabe’s absence.

Atlantic Notes: Panthers, Talbot, Domi, Pacioretty, Kucherov, Guentzel, Perron

December 3, 2024 at 3:32 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 3 Comments

It’s never too early to start thinking about the trade deadline, despite being three months away. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic agrees, touching on what the Florida Panthers might do to improve their roster between now and March 7 (Subscription Article).

The defending Stanley Cup champions likely don’t have many complaints as they sit second in the Atlantic Division and fifth in the Eastern Conference. The only glaring issue for the Panthers this season is the middling defense as the team sits 25th in GA/G at 3.20. It was always going to be difficult for Florida to recover from the departures of Brandon Montour and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Still, they’ll want to add a top-four defenseman over the next three months.

The Panthers have some flexibility at the trade deadline with a projected cap space of $5.47MM. This should allow the organization to bring in a rental option for the home stretch of the regular season and the playoffs. Florida could get creative and look beyond this season for their blue line, especially considering that longtime defenseman Aaron Ekblad becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Other notes from the Atlantic Division:

  • According to broadcaster Daniella Bruce, the Detroit Red Wings won’t have netminder Cam Talbot available during their two-game road trip against the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators. This means rookie netminder Sebastian Cossa will likely be with the team for the remainder of the week under emergency conditions unless Alex Lyon is activated from the injured reserve. Head coach Derek Lalonde has already confirmed Cossa won’t get the start this evening against the Bruins but could make his NHL debut later this week should Ville Husso continue struggling.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without forwards Max Domi and Max Pacioretty tonight but it appears that won’t be the case for much longer. David Alter of The Hockey News reported earlier that they are getting ’close’ to returning from injury despite being ruled out for tomorrow’s game against the Nashville Predators. Toronto has played extremely well of late despite multiple injuries to their forward group accruing an 8-2-0 record in their last 10 contests.
  • Tampa Bay’s first line could look different in their upcoming matchup on Thursday against the San Jose Sharks. In two separate reports, Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times shared that the Lightning are hopeful that forward Nikita Kucherov will return to practice tomorrow and that Jake Guentzel left today’s practice with an apparent ailment. The team will know more tomorrow regarding the status of both players but there’s growing concern the Lightning will need to pull from their depth up front in a few days.
  • It’s been a difficult introductory season for David Perron with the Ottawa Senators. He’s only suited up in nine games this season and it doesn’t appear he’ll be adding to that total soon (X Link). He missed significant time earlier in the season due to a health scare with his newborn daughter but has missed due to an upper-body injury more recently.

Minor Transactions: 11/19/24

November 19, 2024 at 6:54 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

As teams continue to try to bank as much cap space as possible, there were quite a few paper moves made today.  We’ll run those down here.

  • The Flames announced that winger Adam Klapka was recalled from AHL Calgary. He was sent down on Saturday and got into two games, picking up two goals and an assist.  While Klapka is now on a five-game point streak at that level, he hasn’t recorded a point in his first five NHL contests so far this season.  He’s likely to serve as the reserve forward tonight versus the Islanders.
  • The Hurricanes are continuing their near-daily movement as they’ve recalled winger Jackson Blake and goaltender Spencer Martin from AHL Chicago, per the AHL’s transactions log. Blake has been sent down five times already but hasn’t played with the Wolves and with five goals and two assists in 17 games with Carolina, he probably won’t anytime soon.  Meanwhile, even though Carolina is using Pyotr Kochetkov and Martin as their tandem with Frederik Andersen injured, the Hurricanes haven’t moved Andersen to IR which allows them to continue to paper Martin down on off days while technically remaining compliant with roster minimums.
  • The Lightning have recalled winger Gage Goncalves, per a team release. He was sent back to the AHL on Sunday in a cost-clearing move and didn’t suit up while on assignment.  The 23-year-old has six assists in five games with Syracuse from earlier in the year and has been held off the scoresheet in his first four appearances with Tampa Bay.
  • A day after being papered back to the minors, Sam Colangelo is back up with the Ducks, per the AHL’s transactions log. The 22-year-old was initially recalled on Sunday but didn’t play in Monday’s game.  Colangelo is off to an impressive start to his first full professional campaign, tallying six goals and nine assists in 14 games with San Diego.
  • While not a direct paper transaction, PuckPedia reports (Twitter link) that the Maple Leafs have transferred winger Max Pacioretty to LTIR, freeing up the cap space for today’s recall of Fraser Minten. Pacioretty suffered a lower-body injury on November 9th and must now miss at least 10 games and 24 days from that point.

Maple Leafs Place Max Pacioretty On IR With Lower-Body Injury

November 11, 2024 at 9:56 am CDT | by Josh Erickson 6 Comments

The Maple Leafs have placed winger Max Pacioretty on injured reserve due to a lower-body injury, per a team announcement. Pacioretty sustained the injury, which appeared to affect his left hamstring, after he fell awkwardly following a cross-check from Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson on Saturday.

He’s listed as week-to-week, a positive sign given that he needed help getting to the locker room after exiting the ice. As David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period notes, that timeline indicates it’s a pulled hamstring rather than a tear, which could have sidelined him for the rest of the season. As such, it’ll likely be a simple rehabilitation period for Pacioretty over the next few weeks without involving anything surgical.

That’s a welcome bit of news for Pacioretty, who’s been under the knife more than his fair share over the past few years. A pair of Achilles tears and a trio of surgeries limited him to 52 appearances over the last two seasons with the Hurricanes and Capitals. A PTO signing by the Leafs late in the summer, a successful training camp earned him a one-year, $1.5MM contract at the beginning of the month – one that likely had been agreed to in principle throughout his tryout.

Thus far, it’s been a worthy gamble from Leafs general manager Brad Treliving. Through 13 games, Pacioretty had two goals and four assists, although he’d gone without a point in his past five. He’d been scratched on a couple of occasions earlier in the season for load management purposes, although he’d played in eight straight games before getting hurt. Pacioretty had also worked his way up Toronto’s left-wing depth chart, recently skating in second-line minutes alongside John Tavares and William Nylander.

Pacioretty’s absence makes the recent reinstatement of Connor Dewar from long-term injured reserve all the more important. The 25-year-old was scratched against Montreal, but with Pacioretty unavailable, he’ll likely make his season debut tomorrow against the Senators, especially if captain Auston Matthews remains out with his upper-body injury. That’s possible after Matthews did not participate in today’s practice, per David Alter of The Hockey News.

The Maple Leafs will likely use Pacioretty’s vacated roster spot to activate defenseman Jani Hakanpää from LTIR. At the beginning of the month, he and Dewar both headed down to AHL Toronto on conditioning loans after offseason surgeries. While their activation didn’t come simultaneously, multiple reports indicate that Hakanpää was at practice with the NHL club this morning, signaling his Maple Leafs debut likely isn’t far away. They’ll have enough cap space, albeit by less than $500K, to remain compliant with Calle Järnkrok and Dakota Mermis still on LTIR. However, they’ll still need to free up roster spots when Matthews and Pacioretty are ready to return from their respective IR stints.

Atlantic Notes: Ekblad, Barkov, Pacioretty, Subban

October 26, 2024 at 3:59 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 5 Comments

The Panthers have been busy on the extension front early on this season.  They signed Carter Verhaeghe on opening night, recently inked Paul Maurice to a new deal, and are in discussions on an extension with Sam Bennett.  However, according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, it has been quiet when it comes to potential talks with their other prominent UFA, defenseman Aaron Ekblad.  The 28-year-old is in the final season of what was a record-setting contract at the time for a blueliner coming off an entry-level deal, paying him $7.5MM per season.  Despite being banged up with injuries the last few years, it stands to reason that a new pact should come in somewhat close to this one which Florida might not be able to afford if they keep Bennett.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic Division:

  • Still with Florida, center Aleksander Barkov took part in a full practice for the first time since sustaining his lower-body injury, one that’s believed to be a high-ankle sprain, notes George Richards of Florida Hockey Now. While he has been ruled out for tonight’s game, the 29-year-old could be cleared to return on Monday against Buffalo.  Barkov has potted at least 68 points in the last three seasons and has an assist in two games so far in 2024-25.
  • Maple Leafs winger Max Pacioretty will return from his lower-body injury tonight versus Boston, relays TSN’s Mark Masters (Twitter link). The 35-year-old has played in five games so far this season, scoring twice.  Pacioretty is owed a bonus of just over $313K when he reaches the 10-game mark and even with Toronto not playing him full-time, he should be able to hit that over the next few weeks as long as he stays healthy.
  • The Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Red Wings, announced that they’ve released goaltender Malcolm Subban from his PTO deal. The 30-year-old played in 35 AHL games last season, posting a 3.12 GAA and a .901 SV%.  Subban also has played in parts of nine NHL seasons spanning 87 appearances where he has a 3.10 GAA and a .898 SV% and will now look to catch on elsewhere.

Atlantic Notes: Liljegren, Compher, Motte, Pacioretty, Vinik

October 25, 2024 at 5:01 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 4 Comments

It’s no surprise that defenseman Timothy Liljegren’s time with the Toronto Maple Leafs may be coming to an end. The former 17th overall pick of the 2017 NHL Draft has only suited up in one game for the Maple Leafs up to this point in the regular season and it doesn’t appear that the organization is willing to expand much upon that total.

As an obvious trade candidate, Harman Dayal and James Mirtle of The Athletic (Subscription Required) offered three potential suitors for Liljegren’s services. The pair lists the Utah Hockey Club, San Jose Sharks, and Los Angeles Kings as three teams needing a right-handed shot puck-moving blue liner.

All three make sense for several reasons. Utah is out Sean Durzi and John Marino for much of the 2024-25 regular season due to surgery and could use a short-term stopgap for their top four. The Kings are facing a similar dilemma with the departure of Matt Roy over the offseason and a long-term preseason injury to All-Star Drew Doughty. The Sharks don’t strike as desperate as the other two options but carry three right-shot defensemen past their primes.

Liljegren’s departure from Toronto seems less about “if” and more about “when” at this stage of the game. He’s shown flashes of top-four capabilities throughout his time in Toronto but hasn’t been trusted by multiple coaches to play in important situations.

Other Atlantic notes:

  • Ansar Khan of MLive provided a few updates on a pair of forwards from the Detroit Red Wings. J.T. Compher, who missed yesterday’s game against the New Jersey Devils with an illness, is designated as a game-time decision for tomorrow night’s contest against the Buffalo Sabres. Khan shares that forward Tyler Motte is still considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury but did participate in practice earlier today. Motte suffered the injury after receiving a solid body check from New York Rangers’ rookie defenseman, Vittorio Mancini, on October 17th.
  • Back to Toronto — veteran forward Max Pacioretty missed the team’s game last night due to a lower-body injury. He’s not expected to be out much longer with TSN’s Mark Masters reporting Pacioretty was a full participant in the team’s practice earlier today. Pacioretty already has two goals through his first five games as a Maple Leaf but the team will likely slowplay his recovery due to his multiple Achilles tears a few years ago.
  • In one of the best feel-good stories in recent memories, Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik is leaving the organization with quite the parting gift. Alex Silverman of the Sports Business Journal reports Vinik is paying nearly $20MM in bonuses to the 300+ employees for the Lightning organization. It will amount to approximately $50K-$66K for each full-time employee and is reminiscent of former owner Mark Cuban’s bonus payouts to the staff of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

Atlantic Notes: McCabe, Pacioretty, Benson

October 23, 2024 at 5:49 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

Mitch Marner and John Tavares project as the two most high-profile players on the Maple Leafs roster eligible for an extension during the 2024-25 NHL season. The one seemingly closest to the finish line, however, is defenseman Jake McCabe with reports shortly before the season began indicating an extension was close between the two sides.

James Mirtle of The Athletic wrote in an article today (Subscription Required) that offered some comparables and context behind Toronto’s desire to keep McCabe around beyond this season. Mirtle highlighted Winnipeg Jets’ defenseman Dylan DeMelo as the most reasonable comparable although it’s difficult to discern a perfect one for any player. DeMelo signed a four-year, $19.6MM extension with the Jets almost a week before he was set to become an unrestricted free agent this past offseason.

If McCabe’s camp seeks a salary similar to 5.6% of the salary cap like DeMelo that would put his AAV at around $5.15MM. Since McCabe shares a desire to stay with the Maple Leafs beyond this season Toronto could manage to lower his AAV if they add a fifth year to his contract. It’s still a negotiation requiring fine-tuning with the Maple Leafs having several pending unrestricted and restricted free agents on the roster. It’s likely a situation they’ll want to avoid slow-playing less losing their third-most valuable defenseman.

Other Atlantic notes:

  • Sticking in Toronto — veteran forward Max Pacioretty left the team’s game last night with a lower-body injury in the second period and never returned to action. There doesn’t appear to be any long-term concern for the injury nor any indication it’s connected to his past Achilles injuries shares Nick Alberga of TheLeafsNation. It should only keep him off the ice for the next few days likely making him an option for the team’s game tomorrow night against the St. Louis Blues.
  • The Buffalo Sabres returned to practice this morning after a big win against the Dallas Stars but were still absent Zach Benson who’s been dealing with a mysterious ailment (X Link). Reports indicate Benson is nursing a lower-body injury suffered during the organization’s trip to Prague to kick off the regular season but the Sabres have been vague about his status up to this point. The ailment appears to have affected his play on the ice with Benson going scoreless through his first six contests while averaging just over 14 minutes of ice time per game.

Maple Leafs Sign Max Pacioretty, Steven Lorentz; Extend Cade Webber

October 7, 2024 at 9:23 am CDT | by Josh Erickson 4 Comments

The Maple Leafs have signed forwards Max Pacioretty and Steven Lorentz to one-year deals after they attended training camp on professional tryouts, the team announced Monday. They’ve also signed pending restricted free agent defenseman Cade Webber to a two-year extension, keeping him under contract through the 2026-27 season.

Pacioretty’s deal is a 35+ contract with a cap hit of $873,770 with up to $626,230 in additional performance bonuses, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports. He’ll receive half those bonuses if he plays 10 games this season and all if he plays 35. The total potential value of the contract is $1.5MM. Lorentz’s deal is a straightforward one-way, league-minimum pact worth $775K, per Seravalli. Webber’s contract carries an $825K cap hit and is a two-way deal in 2025-26 before becoming a one-way pact in 2026-27, adds Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic.

Pacioretty, 35, is looking to get back on track in Toronto after a pair of Achilles tendon tears cost him most of the past two seasons. After playing just five games with the Hurricanes in 2022-23, he signed with the Capitals last summer. He made his season debut after completing his recovery in January, but his goal-scoring output plummeted from years past. ’Patches’ shot just 4.2%, scoring four goals in 47 contests while adding 19 assists for 23 points.

The former Canadiens captain is a six-time 30-goal scorer, though. While he likely won’t land top-six minutes in Toronto and thus has virtually no chance of replicating that feat, his shooting percentage should rebound to its usual 10 to 12 percent and put him back on track for double-digit scoring totals in a third-line role if he stays healthy. That’s certainly a big if, considering he hasn’t played more than 50 games in a season since the 2019-20 campaign. Still, he’ll likely open the season as the team’s 3LW alongside Pontus Holmberg and Bobby McMann or Nicholas Robertson.

Lorentz, 28, brings a Stanley Cup ring and 230 games of NHL experience to Toronto’s fourth line. The natural center played 16 of the Panthers’ 24 playoff games last year en route to the franchise’s first championship, scoring twice and adding an assist for three points with a -1 rating while averaging 7:07 per game. He won’t be much of an offensive factor, averaging seven goals and 15 points per 82 games throughout his regular season career. But he’s serviceable enough in the faceoff dot, winning 48.7% of his draws, and his possession quality numbers at even strength are historically above water. He’ll likely start at left wing, with David Kämpf centering the Leafs’ fourth line.

Webber won’t be making his NHL debut in the next few days. He’s waiver-exempt and will need to be assigned to AHL Toronto today so the Leafs can reduce their opening-night roster to a maximum of 23 players. However, the 2019 fourth-round pick stayed in the mix until the end and has seemingly impressed the Leafs since signing his entry-level contract at the end of last season. The stay-at-home defender is coming off a four-year run at Boston University, where he served as an alternate captain last year and posted six assists and a +15 rating in 38 games. He should still be in line for his NHL debut at some point this year, even if it’s not during opening week.

Pacioretty’s oddly specific cap hit has much to do with Toronto optimizing their long-term injured reserve capture to open the season, giving them as much financial flexibility as possible while dealing with some injuries. As outlined by The Score’s Kyle Cushman, the Leafs are expected to submit an opening-night roster with just $1 in cap space pending multiple moves, including returning top forward prospect Easton Cowan to his junior team, placing Fraser Minten on season-opening injured reserve with his high ankle sprain, placing Connor Dewar on standard IR, and placing Jani Hakanpää, Calle Järnkrok, and Dakota Mermis on LTIR.

Maple Leafs Sign Max Pacioretty To PTO

September 11, 2024 at 9:01 am CDT | by Josh Erickson 5 Comments

The Maple Leafs have signed unrestricted free agent winger Max Pacioretty to a professional tryout, the team announced Wednesday.

It’s far from unexpected. David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported the Leafs were in discussions to sign Pacioretty late last month, and Darren Dreger of TSN said yesterday that coming to an agreement with Pacioretty was one of Toronto’s top priorities after resolving a stalemate with restricted free agent forward Nicholas Robertson.

Most expected Pacioretty’s eventual agreement with the Leafs to be a guaranteed contract instead of a PTO, but with Toronto tight to the salary cap, it’ll take some time to work out – likely into training camp. Pacioretty inking a PTO likely indicates he has a deal in place that will be signed once the Maple Leafs have the financial flexibility to do, a sentiment echoed by Chris Johnston of The Athletic and TSN. His agent, Octagon’s Allan Walsh, confirms this.

Pacioretty, 36 in November, will compete to land a job in the Leafs’ top nine as a depth scorer with loads of NHL experience – 902 games, to be exact. After recovering from a pair of Achilles tendon tears, Pacioretty struggled to reclaim his pre-injury form with just four goals in 47 games after working his way back to a regular NHL role with the Capitals last season.

But the 2007 first-round pick of the Canadiens is no stranger to bouncing back from serious injuries. Pacioretty won the Masterton Trophy in 2012 with Montreal, emerging as a top-line scoring threat that year after a C4 vertebrae fracture and Grade 2 concussion sustained on a hit from then-Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chára the year prior nearly ended his career.

Even as the dreaded aging curve declines his overall effectiveness, there’s a reasonable expectation for him to return to at least being a double-digit goal contributor in Toronto if he stays healthy. The Connecticut native shot just 4.2% last season, the second-worst in the league among forwards with at least 90 shots on goal. That’s an incredulous stat from a six-time 30-goal scorer with a career average shooting percentage north of 11%.

Given his age, Pacioretty is eligible to sign a bonus-laden 35+ contract. That will allow the Maple Leafs to keep his initial cap hit low, likely the league minimum $775K, while allowing him to earn more cash if he stays healthy and becomes a regular contributor. Any performance bonuses he earns that Toronto can’t fit under the cap will be applied to next season’s books as a bonus overage penalty.

Pacioretty is likely set to fill the role that Robertson did last season. After inking a one-year, $875K deal yesterday, Robertson is still on the trade block following his late June request. If the Leafs find a trade partner before opening night, Pacioretty and Bobby McMann will likely compete for left-wing duties on the second line with John Tavares and William Nylander, with the other dropping to third-line minutes.

Pacioretty has 330 goals and 668 points over his 16-year career, averaging 30 goals and 61 points per 82 games. Those are high benchmarks for an aging veteran who’s played just 91 games over the past three seasons, but a healthy season could at least result in ’Patches’ hovering around the 15-goal, 30-point territory.

Maple Leafs Still Pursuing Jani Hakanpää, Max Pacioretty

September 10, 2024 at 8:39 am CDT | by Josh Erickson 3 Comments

Expect the Maple Leafs to turn their attention to finalizing contracts for unrestricted free agents Jani Hakanpää and Max Pacioretty after getting a deal done with restricted free agent winger Nicholas Robertson this morning, says Darren Dreger of TSN. With limited cap room, getting a Robertson contract finalized further before training camp was a priority for Treliving to avoid the threat of a late-summer offer sheet, Dreger added.

Hakanpää reportedly agreed to a two-year, $3MM deal with the Leafs when free agency opened on July 1, but the contract was never finalized. That’s because the 32-year-old is still dealing with the effects of a knee injury that ended his 2023-24 campaign shortly after the trade deadline.

A dispute between Hakanpää and the Leafs’ medical staff about whether he can play through the injury, which has left his knee “basically bone on bone,” led Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic to say last month that Toronto was unlikely to end up registering the contract. It appears they’re still holding out hope, though, and are trying to get the stay-at-home defender in a Maple Leafs sweater before training camp opens next Wednesday.

After signing Robertson, though, they don’t have the capacity to stomach Hakanpää’s $1.5MM cap hit as reported. They could become cap-compliant by shedding Conor Timmins’ $1.1MM cap hit, either by trade, waivers or burying him in the minors. Doing so would leave the Leafs with just $333 in cap space with an open roster spot, per PuckPedia. They currently have $400,333 in projected space with Robertson and Timmins on the NHL roster.

Hakanpää has come into his own as a valuable shutdown presence in Dallas, posting 40 points and a +29 rating in 226 appearances for the Stars over the past three seasons while averaging 17:47 per game. If signed, the right-shot defenseman projects to slot into a bottom-four role, potentially bumping Jake McCabe back to his natural left side and Simon Benoit to the press box.

They’d still need to make another move in order to add Pacioretty. The Maple Leafs were linked to the 35-year-old winger late last month, and he remains on the market in search of a guaranteed contract rather than a professional tryout.

Treliving appears willing to make that guaranteed deal work. It’ll likely end up as a league-minimum $775K cap hit before performance bonuses – which he’s eligible for with a 35+ contract. Those bonuses could result in cap pain for the Leafs down the line, but it would require minimal work to make him fit on the roster now. They could waive, trade, or otherwise demote any roster player aside from Joseph Woll and have a pathway to cap compliance with both Hakanpää and Pacioretty, assuming Timmins is off the roster as stipulated earlier.

Coming off back-to-back Achilles injuries, Pacioretty posted four goals, 19 assists and 23 points in 47 games for the Capitals last season with a -14 rating. He’s due for significant positive regression in the goal-scoring department after shooting at an abysmal 4.2%, nearly seven points south of his 11.1% career average.
