Devils Place Cody Glass On IR, Activate Juho Lammikko

The New Jersey Devils will have some notable center depth missing for the next little while. The Devils announced that they’ve placed center Cody Glass on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, and have activated Juho Lammikko in a corresponding roster move.

Although they didn’t mention it in the announcement, Glass’s placement on the IR is likely retroactive to October 21st, the last time he played, making him eligible for activation tomorrow. Before succumbing to the lower-body ailment, he scored two goals in six games and averaged a 40.3% success rate in the faceoff dot on the team’s third line.

Despite the low faceoff success, Glass has been relatively solid for New Jersey’s possession play and on the defensive side of the puck. Regardless, the team is off to an excellent start, winning with and without Glass.

Replacing Glass in the lineup will be Lammikko, who was placed on the IR last week to create space for Stefan Noesen’s activation. Tonight’s game against the Colorado Avalanche will be Lammikko’s first NHL appearance since the 2021-22 campaign, when he scored seven goals and 15 points in 75 games for the Vancouver Canucks. He’s spent the last few years overseas with the NL’s ZSC Lions.

Although it’s well known that the Devils have an excellent team when healthy, the third-line center position could be an area for an upgrade around the trade deadline. New Jersey already has one of the best combinations in their top six with Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier, and a prominent third-line center could put them over the top.

Snapshots: Strome, Devils, Liiga

The Washington Capitals’ solid early-season momentum was placed at risk last night as first-line center Dylan Strome suffered a lower-body injury. After the game, Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery called the injury “concerning,” and The Washington Post’s Bailey Johnson noted that while Strome will be evaluated today, the fact that the Capitals have an off day means that we likely won’t receive an update on Strome’s status until Monday at the earliest.

Carbery is likely far from the only person concerned at the prospect of losing Strome for a period of time due to injury. While franchise face Alex Ovechkin set all-time records last season, it was Strome who quietly led the club in scoring with a career-best 82 points in 82 games. The 2015 third-overall pick ranks second in scoring on Washington this season, behind only rugged forward Tom Wilson. Should Strome miss time, the Capitals may elect to shift Connor McMichael back to the center position, where he has spent time previously. He dressed as the club’s second-line left winger yesterday on a line centered by Pierre-Luc Dubois.

  • New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe issued updates today on two injured players: Juho Lammikko and Cody Glass. As relayed by team reporter Amanda Stein, Lammikko will travel with the Devils on their current western road trip, while Glass will not travel. We previously covered how Lammikko had returned to practice and was nearing a return to the ice, as well as news that Glass would be out “multiple weeks.” Lammikko signed a one-year, one-way $800K deal with New Jersey to return to North America after spending three seasons with the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League. He hasn’t yet made his Devils debut, but Lammikko could very well slide into Glass’ vacated bottom-six center role once he’s healthy. While Lammikko doesn’t have the pedigree as a scorer that Glass has, he does bring over 150 games of NHL experience to the table as well as a 51% faceoff win rate in his most recent NHL campaign.
  • Some interesting news broke in Finland this morning, as journalist Timo Kunnari of Iltalehti reported that the country’s pro hockey circuit could undergo some significant changes in the short and medium-term future. According to Kunnari, some of the country’s biggest pro clubs, including Tappara, HIFK, and TPS (based out of the major metropolitan cities of Tampere, Helsinki, and Turku, respectively) are reportedly in advanced talks to form their own professional league and break away from the established Liiga at some point in the short-to-medium term future. While this news has not been officially announced by any team, and appears to be more of a credible rumor at this stage than confirmed fact, such a move would be a significant development with potentially far-reaching implications for the business of hockey in one of the world’s most passionate hockey nations.

Devils Notes: Bordeleau, Markstrom, Lammikko

The New Jersey Devils acquired depth winger Thomas Bordeleau in a trade for center Shane Bowers in early July. In reflecting on that trade on Saturday, Bordeleau told Kristy Flannery of The Hockey News that he requested a trade from San Jose before the 2025 Trade Deadline. He explained that he didn’t feel he got a fair opportunity after coming back from an injury sustained in the 2023-24 training camp. With the path blocked ahead of him, he felt it was time for the fresh start.

After a full year with the San Jose Barracuda last year, Bordeleau hasn’t yet found a way to break out of the AHL in the Devils’ organization. He has two points, six penalty minutes, and a minus-four through five games with the Utica Comets this season – far below the scoring pace that led him to 38 poinnts in 59 games with the Barracuda last year. Bordeleau split time between the NHL and AHL lineups for three years before last season, ultimately totaling 18 points in 44 games in the Sharks’ lineup. With a quiet start to the 2025-26 season, Bourdeleau likely sits behind a few AHL teammates on New Jersey’s call-up chart.

Other notes out of New Jersey:

  • Starting goaltender Jacob Markstrom returned to the Devils’ practice on Saturday, per team reporter Amanda Stein. He will travel with the team on their upcoming road trip to the west coast, which spans matchups against the Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, and Anaheim Ducks. Markstrom has already missed five games with a lower-body injury sustained in October 13th’s win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has a meager .845 save percentage through parts of three games this season – far below the .900 he posted in 49 games last year. A return to practice will put Markstrom on pace to soon return to the crease, and begin working on improving those numbers.
  • Stein also shared that depth forward Juho Lammikko participated in practice in place of top center Nico Hischier, who sat out for a maintenance day. Lammikko is not yet ready to return to the lineup, though he’s continuing to progress from a lower-body injury sustained before the start of the season. Lammikko has had intermittent stints in the NHL. He played in 40 games, and recorded six points, with the Florida Panthers in 2018-19 – then spent one season in both Finland’s Liiga and Russia’s KHL. He returned to the NHL for 119 games, combined between the Panthers and Vancouver Canucks between 2020 and 2022. He scored 20 points in those appearances. Lammikko has spent the last three years in a starring role for Zurich SC in Switzerland’s National League. His hot scoring – 112 points in 144 games – helped lead Zurich to back-to-back championships in 2024 and 2025. Now, Lammikko is nearing his first chance to crack into the Devils’ lineup.

New Jersey Devils Announce Multiple Roster Moves

The New Jersey Devils are getting a major scoring boost to their middle-six forward group tonight. According to a team announcement, the team has activated and reassigned defenseman Seamus Casey, placed forward Juho Lammikko on the injured reserve, and activated forward Stefan Noesen from the injured reserve.

Noesen had been recovering from an offseason groin injury, one that required a small procedure. Although he didn’t play in the Devils’ win last night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, there was growing optimism that Noesen would return relatively soon since he practiced with the team on Monday.

New Jersey may not trust him for second-line duties out of the gate, though his natural fit is on the right wing next to Nico Hischier. Last year, his first with the Devils since the 2018-19 campaign, Noesen had a career year, scoring 22 goals and 41 points in 78 games. Considering the team suffered multiple injuries last year, Noesen offered valuable secondary scoring for a relatively low cost.

The Devils will likely ease Noesen into the lineup, starting him on the fourth line instead of the recently recalled Brian Halonen. Assuming his transition back to the roster goes well, Noesen will be back on the second line, replacing Dawson Mercer, in no time.

The other two transactions are relatively inconsequential. Casey began the year on the Devils season-opening injured reserve due to a lower-body injury, but had no place on the roster upon his return, given New Jersey already has seven capable defensemen. He’ll start his season with the AHL’s Utica Comets, where he scored three goals and 18 points in 30 games last year.

Meanwhile, Lammikko lands on the IR without having played a game with the Devils this season. The Noormarkku, Finland native joined the Devils from the NL’s ZSC Lions this summer after scoring 48 goals and 112 points in 144 games over three years with the Lions.

Devils Issue Multiple Injury Updates

One of the goals of the preseason is to get through things injury-free or as close to it as possible.  While plenty of teams have been successful on that front over the past few weeks (at least so far), the Devils have not been one of those.  Speaking with reporters (video link), head coach Sheldon Keefe provided updates on several players, with most of them not of the positive variety.

Prospect blueliner Seamus Casey was having a strong training camp but that has come to a sudden conclusion.  He is now dealing with an undisclosed injury with Keefe noting that he won’t be on skates for the foreseeable future.  The 21-year-old had four goals and four assists in just 14 games with New Jersey last season while also notching 18 points in 30 games with AHL Utica.  It looked like he had a realistic chance of breaking camp with the team but instead, he’ll start the season on season-opening injured reserve where he’ll have a prorated cap charge relative to the percentage of time he was on New Jersey’s roster last season.

The one good injury tidbit also came on the back end.  Brett Pesce skated Friday after leaving their last preseason game early.  At this point, his availability for opening night remains up in the air but the fact he was skating suggests that he either will be available for that game or should be back soon after.  Pesce had 17 points and 138 blocked shots in 72 games last season while averaging over 21 minutes a night of playing time.

Meanwhile, up front, winger Stefan Noesen has been dealing with a groin injury that he played through last season and re-aggravated over the summer.  While the hope was that he was making some progress in recovery, Keefe noted that he is not yet close to playing.  The 32-year-old had a career year last season, collecting 22 goals and 41 points in 78 games while chipping in with 152 hits but now he won’t be available on opening night either.

The same can be said for center Juho Lammikko.  After spending the last three seasons in Switzerland with Zurich, he signed a one-year, $800K contract to try to return to the NHL.  However, Keefe indicated that he is out for the near future as well.  Notably, his contract is a one-way pact, meaning it will count in full against New Jersey’s salary cap while he’s injured, even if he’s ultimately going to be ticketed to play in Utica.

Devils Sign Juho Lammikko

The Devils signed center Juho Lammikko to a one-way deal worth $800K, PuckPedia reports. He’ll look to win out a roster spot in training camp and avoid waivers and a subsequent assignment to AHL Utica, although the one-way deal stipulates that it won’t affect him financially if it happens.

Lammikko, 29, has three years and 159 games of NHL experience. The left-shot pivot was a third-round pick of the Panthers back in 2014 and made his NHL debut four years later. He made 40 appearances for the Cats in the 2018-19 season, registering six assists and a minus-seven rating, before returning to Europe when his entry-level contract expired. However, Florida retained his signing rights with a qualifying offer, so when he decided he was ready to return stateside after a year and a half abroad in Finland and Russia, he returned to the Panthers for the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season.

While Lammikko managed a full-time roster spot, something he never held during his first stint in the Panthers organization, his production and role were identical to his rookie campaign. He scored his first four NHL goals but added only one assist for five points in 44 games, posting a minus-eight rating and averaging 10:50 per game. While he didn’t generate any meaningful offense in Florida, he did have some solid possession impacts at even strength, considering he was deployed as a defensive specialist.

After Lammikko re-signed with Florida on a league-minimum, one-way contract for the 2021-22 season, he failed to win a regular spot in the lineup in training camp. As a result, was traded to the Canucks along with Noah Juulsen in exchange for former top defense prospect Olli Juolevi at the beginning of the regular season. It was in British Columbia that Lammikko showed more legitimate upside as a bottom-six checking center. He upped his offensive production with a 7-8–15 scoring line in 75 games, a slight per-game increase even with the increased workload, and saw his ice time jump to the 12-minute range per game. The Finnish pivot also won 51.0% of his faceoffs after finishing at 42.8% and 44.9% in his two prior seasons with Florida. He also finished fourth among Vancouver forwards with 93 hits.

Nonetheless, that wasn’t enough for the Canucks to issue Lammikko a qualifying offer following his career-best campaign. After not pursuing or receiving NHL offers, Lammikko returned to Europe with the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League. He’s been with ZSC ever since, bringing him some much-desired stability and allowing him to re-emerge as an offensive threat. He potted a 48-64–112 scoring line and a +60 rating in 144 games across the last three years, yielding back-to-back NL championships – he even scored the title-clinching goal in ZSC’s 2024 win. Lammikko is also 11th in NL scoring over the last three seasons.

He’ll now head to Jersey in an attempt to win out a bottom-six spot next year. It’s exceedingly rare for a player to make a jump to the NHL after his first two stints didn’t pan out, but he’s nonetheless hoping the third time is the charm. Bottom-six depth was an easily identifiable area of need for the Devils entering the summer, who have more than a few pending unrestricted free agents at the position and need insurance options in case candidates for internal promotion like Nolan Foote and Nathan Legare don’t work out.
