Jonas Brodin

Evening Notes: Hartman, Blankenburg, Makar

December 21, 2023 at 8:15 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski Leave a Comment

The Minnesota Wild have announced that forward Ryan Hartman will miss tonight’s game with an upper-body injury. Hartman’s injury is a microcosm of the kind of season it has been for the Wild this year. The 29-year-old spent roughly two weeks toiling on the Wild’s fourth line, only to get moved up in the lineup where he scored goals in back-to-back games before falling to this latest injury.

The Wild are dealing with injuries to key players at the moment as defensemen Jonas Brodin, Jared Spurgeon are out, as is forward Mats Zuccarello. Despite the injury troubles, the Wild have been playing solid hockey under new head coach John Hynes as the team is 8-3 since he took over being the bench after a shaky 5-10-4 start to the season under former head coach Dean Evason.

In other evening notes:

  • Aaron Portzline of The Athletic is reporting that Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Nick Blankenburg isn’t playing tonight due to an upper-body injury. The Washington, Michigan native has dressed in six games this season for Columbus and has yet to register a point. He was recalled earlier this month after spending the first two months of the season with the Blue Jackets AHL affiliate and dressed in 36 games last season for Columbus, tallying four goals and ten assists.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have announced that defenseman Cale Makar will return to the lineup after missing the last three games with a lower-body injury. The former Norris Trophy winner was considered a game-time decision but after taking warmup with the team it appears the decision was made for the 25-year-old to play against the Ottawa Senators. Makar has eight goals and 29 assists this season in just 27 games and will give a much-needed boost to the Avalanche team that has lost seven of their last 11 games.

Jared Spurgeon Won’t Play Tonight, Out Day-To-Day

December 14, 2023 at 12:14 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski 2 Comments

The Minnesota Wild have announced that defenseman Jared Spurgeon will miss tonight’s game against the Calgary Flames and will be out of the lineup day-to-day as he is banged up and dealing with a lower-body injury. The Wild captain was activated off the long-term injured reserve just over a month ago after he was originally injured in the pre-season. The 34-year-old has played in just 13 games this year and hasn’t been able to get going offensively as he has just four assists.

The Edmonton, Alberta native is no stranger to being out of the lineup having played just one full 82-game season since breaking into the league back in 2010. Spurgeon has always been undersized at just 5’9” and 166lbs, but despite being undersized and not overly flashy offensively, Spurgeon has remained an incredibly effective two-way defenseman. He continues to be matched up against the top players on opposing teams, and a lot of the Wild’s struggles this season can be attributed to how many games they’ve had to play without Spurgeon.

The Wild are already without the services of Jonas Brodin and could be in tough to replace two of their top defensemen. With Spurgeon, Brodin, and Zach Bogosian out, Minnesota will be looking for someone to step in and eat some of the minutes that have been vacated. That could mean a big bump in ice time for both Brock Faber and Jacob Middleton.

Minnesota sits seventh in the Central Division with a record of 10-12-4 and has been one of the more active teams in recent weeks as they’ve made a handful of trades and initiated a coaching change as well. Currently, the Wild sit four points of the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference with a pair of games in hand.

Wild Recall Three Players, Move Jonas Brodin To LTIR

December 13, 2023 at 4:36 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Wild recalled defensemen Daemon Hunt and Dakota Mermis, as well as forward Vinni Lettieri, from AHL Iowa on Wednesday, per a team release. To make the Wild salary cap-compliant, defenseman Jonas Brodin was moved to long-term injured reserve retroactive to December 9. He remains out indefinitely with an upper-body injury sustained last Friday on a hit from Oilers winger Evander Kane.

Doing so gives the Wild a 23-player active roster for the first time this season. Recalling both Hunt and Mermis gives the Wild eight defensemen to choose from on a nightly basis while Brodin is sidelined, while Lettieri will serve as injury insurance as an extra forward with the Wild slated for an East Coast road trip early next week.

This is the fourth recall of the season for Hunt, the 65th overall pick in the 2020 draft. The 21-year-old last suited up for an NHL game on November 9 and has been a healthy scratch in four out of the nine games he’s been rostered for this season.

Including his NHL debut on October 27 against the Capitals, Hunt’s played in five games, recording three shots on goal while averaging a paltry 8:36 per contest. He’s still looking for his first NHL point. The physical two-way defender is beginning to look comfortable at the professional level, notching a goal, eight assists and a +3 rating in 14 games for AHL Iowa this season. He recorded 11 points in 59 games last season, his first in the pros after completing his junior career with the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors.

Mermis comes back up to the NHL promptly after being sent down Monday to extend his waiver-exempt status, which lasts for 30 NHL-rostered days after he last cleared waivers on November 18. The 29-year-old has played in a career-high 14 games this season, recording two goals and three assists while logging 15:29 per game. After playing 13 straight games between October 17 and November 12, Mermis has frequently been a healthy scratch when on the NHL roster and has played just once in the last month, logging 12:37 and a +1 rating against the Oilers on Friday.

Lettieri, 28, returns to Minnesota after a week-long stint in the minors. The high-end minor-league point producer has split the 2023-24 campaign between leagues after signing with his hometown club in the offseason, recording eight points in ten games for AHL Iowa and three points in 13 games for Minnesota. His last appearance came on November 30 against the Predators.

Evening Injury Updates: Brodin, Larkin, Pearson

December 9, 2023 at 7:46 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 1 Comment

Last night, in the team’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild defenseman, Jonas Brodin, went down with an injury after a hit-from-behind from Evander Kane. In an update today, Michael Russo of The Athletic reports that Brodin will be out for a significant amount of time due to the hit.

In the short-term, the Wild will have veterans Alex Goligoski and recently-acquired Zach Bogosian to rely on in Brodin’s stead, but their defensive depth will ultimately be tested without one of their top defensemen in the lineup for the foreseeable future. Leading the team in ATOI, Brodin has scored one goal and nine points in 25 games, mostly impacting the game on the defensive side of the puck.

If Minnesota’s current depth is unable to properly fill in the hole on the left side of the defense in Brodin’s absence, the team may look to once again call up defenseman Daemon Hunt to Minnesota. Although he was unable to score a point during a five-game stretch in late October and early November, Hunt has scored one goal and eight points in 12 games for Minnesota’s AHL affiliate, the Iowa Wild, so far this season.

Other injury updates:

  • With a handful of minutes left in the first period of tonight’s game between the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators, Red Wings’ captain, Dylan Larkin, received a hit to the head from Ottawa forward, Mathieu Joseph, and laid motionless on the ice for some time. In an update from the team, Detroit announced that Larkin is still being attended to by the team medical staff, and would not return to action tonight. Suffering from multiple head injuries throughout his career, it would be a tough blow to the Red Wings if Larkin is set to miss significant time, as he leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and 25 points in 23 games.
  • The Montreal Canadiens announced that forward Tanner Pearson would not return to the team’s game tonight due to an upper-body injury. Since coming over from the Vancouver Canucks in an offseason trade, Pearson has produced at a relatively tepid rate, scoring four goals and eight points in 26 games, which is still good for eighth on the team in scoring. Already with six players currently residing on the team’s injured reserve, the Canadiens may have to dig into their organizational depth even further if Pearson is set to miss significant time.

West Notes: Wild, McLeod, Afanaseyev, Kesselring

March 18, 2023 at 1:45 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Wild could get several key veterans back in their lineup shortly.  Randy Johnson of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune relays that while defensemen Jonas Brodin and Jacob Middleton plus wingers Brandon Duhaime and Marcus Foligno weren’t in the lineup today, they could all be back for Sunday’s contest against Washington.  Brodin has been out the longest, missing the last four weeks with a lower-body injury which has been a big blow to their back end.  Middleton is dealing with an illness sustained earlier this week.  Meanwhile, Duhaime has missed more than two weeks with a head injury while Foligno has been out for a week with a lower-body issue of his own.  Minnesota is in the midst of a very close three-way battle for positioning in the Central and getting multiple veterans back at once could certainly give their lineup a nice boost.

More from the Western Conference:

  • Postmedia’s Jim Matheson suggests that center Ryan McLeod is dealing with a shoulder injury. He was injured on Tuesday against Ottawa and didn’t suit up versus Dallas on Thursday.  There’s no word on how long the 23-year-old will be out.  McLeod’s in the middle of a decent sophomore season, notching 11 goals and 11 assists in 55 games despite spending a lot of that time in Edmonton’s bottom six.
  • After papering him down, the Predators announced that they’ve recalled winger Egor Afanasyev to AHL Milwaukee. The 22-year-old made his NHL debut last weekend after being brought up and has gotten into three games with Nashville, logging 9:32 per night while being held off the scoresheet.  Afanasyev also has 13 goals and 13 assists in 55 games with the Admirals in the minors this season.
  • A day after being sent down, the Coyotes announced (Twitter link) that they have once again recalled defenseman Michael Kesselring from AHL Tucson on an emergency basis. The 23-year-old has played in three games with Arizona since being acquired just before the deadline, logging 18:35 per contest.  The 23-year-old has also suited up three times for the Roadrunners since the swap, picking up a goal and an assist.

West Notes: Dunn, Borgen, Blues, Brodin

March 4, 2023 at 6:32 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Kraken started contract extension talks with pending RFA defensemen Will Borgen and Vince Dunn but agreed to push those until after the season, notes Kate Shefte of The Seattle Times.  Borgen is in his first season as a regular and has 16 points in 62 games while logging over 16 minutes a night.  Arbitration eligible, the 26-year-old should be able to more than double his $945K qualifying offer this summer.

As for Dunn, he leads all Kraken rearguards in scoring this season with 11 goals and 36 assists in 62 games; his 47 points put him tenth in the league for points by a blueliner.  He’s also arbitration-eligible this summer with one year of team control remaining.  Dunn is well-positioned to land quite a bit more than the $4MM he has made in each of the last two seasons while a long-term agreement will likely be coming his way as well.

Elsewhere in the West:

  • Considering the Blues were selling, it may have come as some surprise that they picked up wingers Kasperi Kapanen and Jakub Vrana before the trade deadline. However, GM Doug Armstrong told reporters including Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic (subscription link) that his preference would be to not get involved in the free agent market this summer and would rather have players on shorter-term deals that they can decide on later.  Both Kapanen and Vrana have one year left on their contracts after this one so St. Louis has elected to go with them over handing out multi-year agreements to other players on the open market in July.
  • The Wild will have to wait a little longer to get Jonas Brodin back. While the original hope was that the blueliner would accompany the team on the road with the possibility of returning on the trip, Dane Mizutani of the Pioneer Press notes that he now isn’t expected to even skate until after their road trip which wraps up today.  The 29-year-old has been out for a week and a half with a lower-body injury and is once again logging big minutes for Minnesota, averaging nearly 23 minutes a night in 49 games this season.

Injury Updates: Gaudreau, Mantha, Brodin

February 23, 2023 at 12:00 pm CDT | by Tanner Holubar Leave a Comment

While the season, on the whole, hasn’t gone well for the Columbus Blue Jackets, their big free agent signee from last summer, Johnny Gaudreau, has been as advertised, with 15 goals and 37 assists for 52 points in 55 games.

Johnny Hockey has missed the past two games for Columbus, a 4-1 win over Dallas and a 3-2 overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes, but is set to return as the Jackets host the Minnesota Wild, according to Bailey Johnson of the Columbus Dispatch. He will add a boost to a team that has four wins in its past 10.

A few other injury notes from around the NHL:

  • Anthony Mantha of the Washington Capitals has been placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, according to Tom Gulitti of NHL.com. Mantha carries a cap hit of 5.7MM through next season, and has struggled with nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 54 games. After scoring 49 goals from 2017-19, he has scored just 33 since the beginning of his current four-year contract.
  • Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin is also headed to injured reserve with a lower-body injury, according to the Wild’s PR account. The Athletic’s Michael Russo reported Brodin sustained the injury Feb. 6 against Arizona, and had played six games since. The Wild can ill afford to lose a player of impact such as Brodin, as Minnesota looks to make a deep playoff run.

Minnesota Wild Recall Dakota Mermis

February 22, 2023 at 4:42 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 4 Comments

The Minnesota Wild have recalled defenseman Dakota Mermis from the AHL’s Iowa Wild under emergency conditions, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.

While the Wild appear to have seven healthy defensemen on the roster, The Athletic’s Michael Russo and Joe Smith report that Mermis’ emergency recall comes in anticipation of injury or illness-related absences. Smith notes that an unnamed defender was banged up in last night’s win against the Los Angeles Kings and that Jonas Brodin isn’t in full health. Brodin’s missed time with a lower-body injury on two separate occasions this season.

Mermis, 29, is a versatile defenseman in his third season with the Wild organization. Stationed on taxi squad duty in his first year, 2020-21, he’s since put up eight goals and 40 assists in 105 AHL games with the Iowa Wild, maintaining his status as one of their top defenders.

He made two appearances with the Wild last season, going without a point. If he does appear in a Wild uniform on this call-up, it will be his first appearance of 2022-23.

Injury Notes: Slavin, Brodin, Raymond

February 11, 2023 at 12:30 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

Carolina Hurricanes top defender Jaccob Slavin is returning to the lineup tonight against the New York Rangers, according to Hurricanes content producer Walt Ruff.

Slavin had missed the past six games before the All-Star break with a lower-body injury. His last game was on January 19, leaving late in a matchup against the Minnesota Wild. Carolina has won all six games in Slavin’s absence, three of them in regulation, and they’ll look to continue a seven-game winning streak tonight in Raleigh. Slavin, averaging over 22 minutes per game this season, is expected to return to his spot on the top pairing alongside Brent Burns.

  • Another important shutdown defenseman is returning to the lineup: Jonas Brodin of the Minnesota Wild. The Athletic’s Michael Russo notes he’s set to return to the lineup tonight against the New Jersey Devils alongside Matt Dumba on the second pairing. Brodin missed the team’s last two games with a lower-body injury. The 29-year-old has two goals and eight points in 43 games this season, posting a +6 rating and 22:32 average time on ice.
  • Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond is absent from today’s game against the Vancouver Canucks with a lower-body injury, ending his 132-game iron man streak. Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press notes that Raymond suffered the injury in a collision with teammate Ben Chiarot yesterday during practice. Raymond’s status is day-to-day. The sophomore forward has 15 goals and 33 points in 50 games this season.

Injury Notes: Canadiens, Blues, Brodin

December 6, 2022 at 8:53 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Montreal Canadiens will be without defenseman David Savard and forward Sean Monahan when they take on the Seattle Kraken tonight. Per the team, Savard is dealing with an upper-body injury and is day-to-day. At the same time, Monahan has a lower-body injury and will be reevaluated when the team returns to Montreal after their road trip concludes tonight.

Savard is second among Canadiens defensemen this season in points (eight) and average time on ice (22:17). While his defensive play hasn’t been what it was during the end of his time in Columbus, he’s a vital minute-muncher on a youthful Montreal defense. His usage is the highest it’s been in more than five years, so it’ll be testing for the Habs rookies to see if they can handle some increased minutes in his absence. Monahan is also in the middle of a well-documented resurgence, sitting in fourth place on the Habs with 17 points in 25 games this year. He’s also been great in the faceoff circle, winning over 55% of his draws and leading the team in total faceoff wins (177).

  • While the St. Louis Blues are on their way to a convincing road win on Long Island, they did it without a pair of key players in winger Pavel Buchnevich and defenseman Torey Krug. Buchenvich was out with a lower-body injury, while Krug missed the game with an upper-body injury. Head coach Craig Berube noted pre-game that both players need further evaluations before “knowing whether the injuries would be more short-term or long-term.”
  • Minnesota Wild head coach Dean Evason said today that although defenseman Jonas Brodin won’t make his return to the lineup tomorrow, the Swede looked “great” today and is close to returning. Brodin, who is day-to-day with a lower-body injury, has missed a combined five games this year with this injury and an earlier illness. While known for his defensive prowess, he’s still in the middle of a down year offensively, with just four assists in 19 games.
