Washington Capitals Sign Ilya Samsonov

May 4, 2018 at 8:08 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The Washington Capitals have finally signed their 2015 first-round pick, inking goaltender Ilya Samsonov to a three-year entry-level contract. The deal carries the maximum entry-level salary of $925K, while also including at least $500K of potential performance bonuses in each season. Samsonov had been expected to sign after his KHL deal expired recently, but is the last first-rounder from 2015 to do so.

You can’t get a much better goaltending prospect than Samsonov, who at the age of 21 has already won a Gagarin Cup in the KHL, two World Junior medals and is one of the best netminders not playing in the NHL. His .926 save percentage this season for Magnitogorsk actually lowered his career mark, which included a .936 year in 2016-17. He’s big, standing 6’3″ 205-lbs, mobile and reactive, and already has a good read on rebound control and puck tracking.

In short, there’s a good chance that Samsonov is ready to take the next step in his career. Whether that is the NHL right away will be determined by what the Capitals do this summer with their current tandem of Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer. Holtby has retaken his crease in the playoffs and been spectacular, reassuring many Capitals fans that the two years remaining on his current contract aren’t going to be spent sitting on the bench collecting a $6.1MM payday. Grubauer, for all his strengths, may be the one to go.

The 26-year old Grubauer is a restricted free agent again this summer, and will be looking for a substantial raise on the $1.5MM he earned this season. With the Capitals already struggling to fit everyone in under the cap—especially with a potential John Carlson extension breaking the bank—there might not be any room for a Grubauer extension. The fact that any deal would be buying out all but one unrestricted free agent years would prove pricey, something Washington might just not be able to swallow.

If they do send Grubauer elsewhere to become a starter, there’s a chance that Samsonov could still start his North American career in the minor leagues to prove he’s ready. Pheonix Copely is under contract for next season and though he struggled this season has shown in the past that he could potentially handle a backup role. It’s not clear if the Capitals would want Samsonov sitting on the bench behind Holtby, as he still has developing to do if he’s to become the franchise starting goaltender many believe him capable of being.

CapFriendly broke the news on Twitter, revealing the exact financial details of the contract.

Five Russian Players Not Invited To Participate At Olympics

January 23, 2018 at 9:44 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has extended invitations to 42 of the 47 players submitted by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RIHF) for consideration for the upcoming Games. Interestingly though, the IOC did not invite the following players to participate:

D Anton Belov
D Alexei Bereglazov
D Mikhail Naumenkov
F Valeri Nichushkin
F Sergei Plotnikov

The RIHF released a statement following the decision, stating that the five players have not been banned from international competitions and are not guilty of any doping violations. Still, the reasons for the snub have not been given and the RIHF has reached out for some clarity.

These would seem to be fairly important omissions for Russia, especially on defense where the club is relatively thin. By looking at the remaining names that did receive invitations one can start to see how the team will be made up. 25 names that make up the roster will will be released on Thursday.

F Sergei Andronov
F Alexander Barabanov
F Anton Burdasov
D Vyacheslav Voynov
D Vladislav Gavrikov
F Nikita Gusev
F Mikhail Grigorenko

G Alexander Sharychenkov
F Sergei Shirokov
F Vadim Shipachyov
F Sergei Shumakov
G Igor Shestyorkin
F Dinar Khafizullin
D Yegor Yakovlev

Conspicuously missing is Andrei Markov, who has had a very successful season for Ak-Bars in the KHL after leaving the Montreal Canadiens, scoring 28 points in 52 games. Why he was left off the preliminary list is unclear, though perhaps they wanted to go in a younger direction on defense.

Metropolitan Notes: Hall, Palmieri, Samsonov, Tavares

December 13, 2017 at 6:45 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

On top of still missing winger Marcus Johansson (who was transferred to injured reserve today) and winger Kyle Palmieri who isn’t ready to return just yet, the Devils will also be without the services of Taylor Hall for their next game on Thursday night, reports Andrew Gross of The Record.  Hall has been diagnosed with a right knee contusion after a collision with Kings defenseman Kurtis MacDermid on Tuesday and while tests revealed no structural damage, he did not travel with the team to Montreal for Thursday’s contest.  He has been listed as day-to-day.

As for Palmieri, Gross reports that the winger expects to be in a walking boot for at least another week.  While he has started skating with the Devils recently (and did make the trip to skate with the team again tomorrow), it appears he’ll be out for several more games at the very least.

More from the Metropolitan:

  • On the heels of Tuesday’s report that Capitals GM Brian MacLellan was in Moscow to speak to top goalie prospect Ilya Samsonov about signing for next season, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports (Twitter link) that it’s reasonably safe to believe that Samsonov will be on an NHL contract for 2018-19. The 20-year-old, Washington’s first-round pick in 2015, is off to a slower start to his season with a .909 SV% in 17 KHL games but is still viewed as one of the top goalie prospects in the league, if not the best.  If management shares the same belief that Samsonov will be able to sign, it will be interesting to see if they make current backup Philipp Grubauer available between now and the trade deadline or if they wait until Samsonov officially signs before doing so.
  • Although Islanders center John Tavares is expected to vastly surpass his $5.5MM cap hit on his next contract, Rob Vollman of ESPN argues that in terms of what he’s expected to provide moving forward, his next deal should be close to $8MM per season despite some of the bigger deals handed out to other top pivots. However, with front-line centers in short supply and extremely high demand, many teams won’t hesitate to go higher than that and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him hit the $10MM mark on his next deal.  Tavares is slated to become a UFA on July 1st and projects to be the top player available in that free agent class.

Washington Capitals Working On Ilya Samsonov

December 12, 2017 at 9:56 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Washington Capitals don’t have a goaltending problem. Braden Holtby hasn’t been quite himself this season, but is still one of the more consistent netminders in the league. Behind him, Philipp Grubauer also hasn’t had quite the season some had hoped, but his is a small sample and could turn at any moment.

Ilya SamsonovStill, the team is looking towards their future in goal. Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports that Capitals GM Brian MacLellan is in Moscow to speak with Ilya Samsonov’s representatives, as they try to bring him over to North America after his current deal is up. Samsonov is under contract with Magnitogorsk through April 2018, after which he could sign his entry-level deal with the Capitals.

It’s not often you see teams spend first-round picks on goaltenders anymore, as so many have been burned by the inconsistent development of young netminders. The Capitals weren’t afraid though when they strode up to the podium in 2015, selecting Samsonov 22nd-overall even while other names like Brock Boeser, Travis Konecny and Jack Roslovic were still available.

Samsonov showed why the Capitals were so high on him the next season, when he jumped into the KHL and recorded a .925 save percentage in 19 games. He would even play in six postseason games and help Magnitogorsk win the Gagarin Cup as a rookie. He also took home a silver as part of the Russian World Junior team. All he did the next season was post a .936 save percentage in 27 KHL games and take over the net for the World Junior squad, earning a bronze medal this time around, but being named a tournament All-Star.

It’s clear that Samsonov is a top goaltending prospect, even if this year his numbers are down a bit on a worse KHL team. He stands 6’4″ at age-20, and has the potential to be an elite goaltender in the NHL one day. Getting him signed and into the Capitals development system is the next step, especially with Grubauer a restricted free agent once again this summer and Holtby only signed through 2019-20.

Metropolitan Notes: Johansson, Palmieri, Bailey, Samsonov

November 3, 2017 at 6:23 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Devils forward Marcus Johansson has been diagnosed with a concussion, head coach John Hynes confirmed to reporters, including The Record’s Andrew Gross.  The injury was sustained on Wednesday against the Oilers and there is no timetable for his return; the team is calling him out indefinitely.  Johansson, New Jersey’s most prominent offseason acquisition, is off to a decent start with his new team, posting three goals and two assists through ten games.

The Devils do have some good news on the injury front, however, Winger Kyle Palmieri resumed skating on Thursday and also took to the ice on Friday as he continues to work towards a return from his lower-body injury.  He’s currently on injured reserve but when he gets the green light to return, it’s likely that they’ll simply place Johansson on IR to free up the roster spot.

Elsewhere in the Metropolitan:

  • While Islanders captain John Tavares has drawn all of the attention, the team is facing the prospect of another high-scoring forward hitting free agency this summer. Winger Josh Bailey is off to a flying start this season with 16 points through 13 games, good for a tie for seventh in league-wide scoring.  While it doesn’t appear that there are ongoing talks of a new deal currently, GM Garth Snow noted on an appearance with Sirius XM NHL Radio (audio link) that they do intend to try to sign him to another long-term contract.  Bailey is in the final year of a five-year, $16MM pact signed back in 2013 and is positioning himself well for a nice raise on his next deal.
  • Capitals prospect Ilya Samsonov has been diagnosed with a concussion, notes J.J. Regan of NBC Sports Washington. The 20-year-old is widely considered to be one of the top goaltending prospects in the league after a strong showing in the KHL and at the World Juniors last season.  His 2017-18 campaign isn’t off to as strong a start though as he has posted a 2.78 GAA and a .912 SV% through his first 16 games with Metallurg Magnitogorsk, well off the marks of 2.13 and .936 he played to last year.
