Colorado Avalanche Still Searching For Goalie Help

The Colorado Avalanche acquired goaltender Antoine Bibeau from the San Jose Sharks on Friday, but that doesn’t mean that they are content with their current depth in net. Adrian Dater of ColoradoHockeyNow.com reports that the team is still looking to make an addition at goalie. He adds that Pittsburgh’s Tristan Jarry and Winnipeg’s Eric Comrie are the likely targets, either via trade or waivers.

Although the Avs are happy to hand over the reins to Philipp Grubauer as the new starter, there may be some concern about backup Pavel Francouz, who is entering just his second season in North America. However, even if they are comfortable with Francouz – a reigning AHL All-Star with considerable European success on his resume – the AHL options are not all that appealing if an injury were to occur. New addition Bibeau was merely a passable AHL goaltender last season in San Jose, splitting starts evenly with Josef Korenar, who outperformed Bibeau’s .904 save percentage and 2.89 GAA. Even with the uncertainly in net for the Sharks last season, Bibeau did not earn a recall and has not seen any NHL action since 2016-17. The only other keeper under contract for Colorado is off-season signing Adam Werner, who played just one season at the top level in Sweden before making the jump. Werner may need seasoning in the ECHL before he can be asked to be the next man up as an AHL regular.

Both Jarry or Comrie would certainly be an upgrade to the depth in Denver and could push Francouz for backup duties. Both players are expected to hit waivers in the coming days, as their respective teams face a roster crunch with too many goalies to choose from. The Penguins just re-signed backup Casey DeSmith to a three-year extension last year in the midst of a season in which he performed well over a career-high 36 appearances. It carries a relatively affordable $1.25MM cap hit if DeSmith continues to succeed as a reliable understudy to Matt Murray. Jarry, 24, meanwhile struggled in two NHL appearances last year, but did have a good AHL campaign. His $675K contract is also extremely affordable (below the current league minimum on new contracts in fact) and the Avalanche could hope to take advantage of the raw ability that made him a second-round pick in 2013. Comrie, 24, is also a 2013 second-round pick, taken just 15 picks after Jarry. The two also share a common theme of playing well in the minors but squandering their NHL opportunities. In a few brief showings, Comrie has done nothing to show the Jets that he is worthy of backing up Connor Hellebuyck while Laurent Brossoit is still in the mix. Brossoit is an impending free agent, so Winnipeg could be more protective of him, but the odds still favor a waiver placement. Colorado could put a claim in on one of the two should they hit the wire or instead make a preemptive trade. However, that would require the Avs to then carry three goalies or risk losing Francouz on waivers themselves. The team could opt to hope they pass through waivers untouched and then negotiate a trade, allowing them the same flexibility to move them to the AHL, but that’s only if either team is still willing to deal. It’s not a straightforward objective to acquire and retain either young keeper, but it surely is one worth exploring for GM Joe Sakic and company.

Jets Re-Sign Eric Comrie

The Jets have re-signed one of their remaining restricted free agents though it’s not one of their big two.  Instead, the team announced that they’ve inked goaltender Eric Comrie to a two-year contract.  The deal will carry a league-minimum $700K AAV in both seasons.  2019-20 is a two-way deal worth a guaranteed $250K per Ken Wiebe of The Athletic (Twitter link) before converting to a one-way pact in 2020-21.

Comrie, a second-round pick (59th overall) of Winnipeg back in 2013, has spent the bulk of his pro career at the minor league level.  He played in 47 games with AHL Manitoba last season, posting a 2.69 GAA with a .917 SV% in 47 games, numbers that were pretty close to his ones from 2017-18 (2.58 GAA,  .916 SV%).  However, despite the strong showing, he has yet to get much of a look in the NHL.  He has just five career NHL games under his belt (one came last season) although he hasn’t fared well in that limited action with a 4.20 GAA and a .821 SV%.

Comrie is waiver-eligible for the upcoming season and the fact that he took less than his qualifying offer will make him appealing to any team that wants to take a flyer on him off the waiver wire; it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to pass Laurent Brossoit for the number two role behind Connor Hellebuyck.  With Mikhail Berdin being the only other goalie under contract in the organization at the moment, the Jets will certainly be hoping that Comrie will be able to make it back to the minors for at least one more year.

With the signing, Winnipeg is now down to just two remaining restricted free agents but both of them are significant in wingers Kyle Connor and Patrik Laine.  Getting them re-signed will certainly be the focus for GM Kevin Cheveldayoff over the coming weeks as they’ll need both under contract before they can assess if they’ll have enough cap room to try to make any other moves before the season gets underway.

West Notes: Comrie, Donskoi, Sekera

With Laurent Brossoit inking a one-year contract over the weekend to remain as Winnipeg’s backup goalie, prospect Eric Comrie could be made available in a trade, suggests Postmedia’s Ken Wiebe.  The 23-year-old pending restricted free agent will no longer be waiver-exempt next season and as he’s clearly third on the depth chart, there doesn’t appear to be a spot for him with the Jets either.  Comrie had a strong season with AHL Manitoba, posting a 2.69 GAA with a .917 SV% in 47 appearances and could be an intriguing pickup for a team looking for a young number two netminder.

Elsewhere out West:

  • Joonas Donskoi’s preference this summer is to re-sign with San Jose over departing in free agency, notes NBC Sports Bay Area’s Chelena Goldman. He had a career year with the Sharks, recording 37 points (14-23-37) in 80 regular season games despite averaging only 13:25 of playing time per night.  With that ability to provide secondary scoring, he should garner a fair bit of interest on the open market if he makes it there and with San Jose needing to deal with several more prominent free agents first, it’s unlikely that a new deal for Donskoi will be done for a while.
  • Oilers defensemen Andrej Sekera has been a speculative trade candidate as Edmonton looks to free up some cap space for their desired offseason spending. However, in an appearance on 630 CHED (audio link), GM Ken Holland discussed how he sees Sekera as a possible mentor for some of the young defenders that will be looking to earn a full-time roster spot next season which suggests that the odds of him being dealt may not be quite as high.  The veteran has missed big chunks of the last two seasons with injuries and with two years left on his contract at a $5.5MM AAV, Sekera’s trade value isn’t the highest at the moment.

The first game of each playoff series is in the books, and boy was it a wild ride. Upsets, shutouts and physical play have given us a great start to the postseason and it only continues tonight. The Columbus Blue Jackets will try to shock the world once again with a win in Tampa Bay, while the Winnipeg Jets will try to find a way to solve Jordan Binnington. As teams prepare for that action, we’ll be here keeping track of the minor moves.

  • The Winnipeg Jets returned Eric Comrie to the minor leagues yesterday, allowing him to return to the Manitoba Moose for their own playoff run. The young goaltender will likely bounce back and forth to give them an extra body at practice, but isn’t expected to suit up for any of the Jets’ games.
  • The same scenario is in place right now for the Boston Bruins and Daniel Vladar, who was up on Thursday night to serve as the emergency backup but has been reassigned to AHL Providence today.
  • Adam Clendening has been recalled by the Columbus Blue Jackets after playing last night for the Cleveland Monsters. Clendening is one of the best defensemen in the AHL and will bounce back and forth like Comrie until one of his two teams is eliminated.

Another week down in the NHL and a quiet night to finish things off. Just two games are on the schedule this evening, though they certainly mean a lot to the teams taking part. The Minnesota Wild will try to topple the Washington Capitals in a game that could be crucial in the Western Conference wild card race. Minnesota trails the Colorado Avalanche and Arizona Coyotes by just one point, but have gone 3-4-3 in their last ten and need to find a way to get things back on track. Meanwhile the San Jose Sharks will try to stop their four-game losing streak when they take on the Anaheim Ducks. San Jose has slipped out of the race for first place in the Pacific Division, and need a win tonight to have any chance at catching the Calgary Flames.

  • The Ottawa Senators have sent both Vitaly Abramov and Filip Chlapik back to the minor leagues, as Jean-Gabriel Pageau has completed his suspension and Chris Tierney is expected back. Abramov made his NHL debut last night and played just under 14 minutes, but was a -3 on the night and didn’t record a shot on goal. He’ll continue to polish his game in the minor leagues and wait for another chance.
  • The Winnipeg Jets have recalled goaltender Eric Comrie under emergency conditions, as Laurent Brossoit left last night’s game with an injury. Comrie has been great once again for the Manitoba Moose, posting a 23-16-2 record and .916 save percentage this season. The 23-year old looks ready to take the next step, and will need to take advantage of any opportunity he gets in the Winnipeg net.
  • Paul Carey has been sent back to the minor leagues by the Boston Bruins, a common occurrence for him recently. The veteran forward has been bounced up and down several times this month, and only played in two games with the team. He’ll continue to serve as an insurance policy for them whenever someone is dealing with a minor injury or illness.
  • Nick DeSimone and Dylan Gambrell have been recalled by the San Jose Sharks, an interesting move given that DeSimone has never suited up in the NHL. The 24-year old defenseman has been outstanding this season in the minor leagues though, recording 39 points in 55 games.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have recalled veteran winger Matt Puempel from the AHL. Puempel has had a stellar season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, second on the team in goals, assists, and points despite playing alongside several experienced AHL scorers. Yet, Puempel has not played for Detroit at all this season in year one of a two-year contract signed this past off-season. If he finally sees action on this call-up, he will try to show that he can make an impact at the NHL level and is deserving of a longer look in camp next fall.

Eight games on the schedule for a relatively busy Friday night in the NHL, with the Nashville Predators and Winnipeg Jets providing some must-see television. The winner of the game will assume first place in the Central Division with less than a quarter of the season to go, and stay ahead of the hard charging St. Louis Blues. The Predators are only five points ahead of the Blues with three more games played, meaning matchups like this with Winnipeg are incredibly important. As always, we’ll be here keeping track of all the minor moves around the league.

  • The Ottawa Senators made a change to their coaching staff today, and also sent Drake Batherson back down to the Belleville Senators for the time being. The team had Batherson up on an emergency recall, but he’ll return to the AHL where he can take on the Manitoba Moose tonight.
  • Interestingly, the Moose will not have Eric Comrie in net for that game as the goaltender has been recalled by the Winnipeg Jets. Comrie is up under emergency conditions meaning the Jets must have an injury or illness somewhere in their goaltending group.
  • The Minnesota Wild have used an emergency recall on Matt Read, bringing him up in time for their game tomorrow against the Calgary Flames. The Wild are right back in the thick of the playoff race after winning their last four games even despite trading away several key forwards over the last few weeks.

Winnipeg Jets Sign Ken Appleby

One minor move that slipped through the cracks yesterday was the signing of minor league goaltender Ken Appleby. With the Winnipeg Jets busy making more trades on deadline day than any other team, the club opted not to issue a press release solely of Appleby’s signing, but to merely include it among other announcements until it garnered more attention today with the fireworks of the trade deadline now passed. The two-way contract is for the remainder of the season at the minimum $650K. As the deal was processed yesterday though, Appleby is eligible to compete in the postseason for the Jets if need be.

Appleby, 23, joins Evan Cormier, Jeremy Smith, Adam Wilcox, and Chris Driedger as minor league goaltenders who have earned NHL contracts in the past few days to serve as emergency depth for their parent clubs. Appleby has split his time between the AHL’s Manitoba Moose and the ECHL’s Jacksonville Ice Men and has missed some time with injuries as well. While his AHL numbers this year – an .865 save percentage and 4.59 GAA in eight appearances – are unseemly, Appleby is just one year removed from a strong season with the AHL’s Binghamton Devils and three stellar appearances with the New Jersey Devils. In fact, it was a surprise this past off-season that Appleby first was not issued a qualifying offer from New Jersey and then was unable to find an NHL contract. At the very least, Appleby’s brief NHL experience and strong ECHL stats this year make him a passable depth option for the Jets.

The question that Appleby faces that the aforementioned newly-signed keepers didn’t is whether he is even the fourth-string goaltender for the team. Appleby will glady take the contract either way, but he face extremely long odds at seeing NHL ice this season. With starter Connor Hellebuyck and backup Laurent Brossoit both young and healthy and playing well enough this season, chances are that Winnipeg won’t have to dive into their reserves in net. However, if injury did strike one goalie, well-regarded prospect Eric Comrie would be the clear-cut replacement. Comrie has some NHL experience as well and has been the starter for Manitoba all year. If somehow the Jets were down two goalies, it would stand to reason that first year-pro Mikhail Berdin could be the next man up. The 20-year-old Russian netminder has been phenomenal this season, posting a .931 save percentage and 2.31 GAA in ten AHL games to date. While Appleby has the slightly better ECHL numbers of the two this year, as well as the brief NHL experience, who would get the call is a toss up. The Jets certainly hope it doesn’t come to that, but it never hurts to add some extra insurance in net anyway.

It’s a busy time in the NHL, with 24 teams scheduled to square off over the course of the day. The action kicks off with a matinee featuring division rivals, Buffalo and Ottawa. Later tonight, heavyweights do battle with Tampa Bay-Montreal, Toronto-Pittsburgh, Boston-Nashville, and Chicago-Calgary. It could also be a big day for transactions, as teams get set to face the week ahead. Keep up with all of the minor moves right here:

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled forward Trevor Moore from the AHL Marlies, the team announced. Moore, 23, is off to a terrific start to the minor league season with twelve points in ten games. That effort may earn him his NHL debut on this most recent call-up. An undrafted free agent out of the University of Denver, Moore is in his third season with the organization but has played exclusively with the Marlies. After back-to-back 33-point regular season campaigns, Moore took a step forward in the postseason, registering 17 points in 20 games en route to a Calder Cup. He has kept that hot streak going this season and will now try to translate his ability to the next level. A Mitch Marner-style player, Moore could fit in nicely with the Maple Leafs if given the opportunity.
  • CapFriendly reports that the Anaheim Ducks have reassigned forward Kalle Kossila to their AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls. Kossila was activated from the season-opening injured reserve last week and made his season debut for the Ducks on Thursday night. The St. Cloud product has dominated at the AHL level since turning pro in 2016, but has only managed to skate in twelve games and record two points for Anaheim. Expected to play a more regular role this season, it is possible that Kossila’s assignment is simply a paper transaction to save cap space ahead of a stretch of four games in six nights. However, it also would not be a surprise to see Kossila spend some time in the AHL, where he will quickly re-discover his scoring touch, before being handed significant minutes by the Ducks.
  • The New York Islanders announced (via Twitter) that they have re-assigned goaltender Christopher Gibson to Bridgeport of the AHL.  He was recalled on an emergency basis on Wednesday with Robin Lehner banged up but he is now capable as dressing as the backup goalie which eliminated the need for Gibson.  The 25-year-old Gibson has struggled in the early going this season, posting 4.21 GAA and a .861 SV% through six games in the minors.
  • Jon Rosen of Fox Sports reports that the Los Angeles Kings have assigned forward Austin Wagner and defenseman Sean Walker to the Ontario Reign of the AHL, but the reporter wasn’t sure who the team intended to recall. CapFriendly now reports that Los Angeles has recalled forwards Michael Amadio and Matt Luff. While Luff has yet to make his NHL debut, Amadio has been with the team for most of the season, getting into nine games. However, after scoring just one goal, the Kings sent him to Ontario to work on his game. He played one game there, posting three assists and already has been recalled.
  • The Colorado Avalanche announced they have sent forward A.J. Greer to the Colorado Eagles of the AHL. With the Avalanche on a four-day break before returning to work, it’s likely the team has sent Greer down to get some work. He has played in eight games for the Eagles and has posted eight points, but has appeared in just one game with the Avalanche. BSN Denver’s AJ Haefele writes that it’s likely that Greer will be back when the Avalanche return to action on Wednesday. However, if he isn’t recalled, that might suggest that center Tyson Jost might be ready to return to the ice.
  • The Winnipeg Jets announced they have returned defenseman Tucker Poolman and goaltender Eric Comrie to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL after taking the pair as non-roster players on their trip to Helsinki, Finland. Poolman has played six games for the Moose and has three assists in six games. The 23-year-old Comrie has also played solidly for Manitoba this year. He has put up a .917 save percentage and a 2.80 GAA in five games.

 

Eric Comrie Re-Signs With Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets at meticulously crossing names off their list, and this time it is Eric Comrie’s turn. The restricted free agent goaltender has signed a one-year two-way contract worth $650K in the NHL. Comrie was one of two unsigned RFAs alongside Josh Morrissey, who is next on the list for the Jets this offseason.

Comrie, 23, will be battling Laurent Brossoit in training camp for the right to back up Connor Hellebuyck this season after another solid year in the AHL. Selected in the second round five years ago, Comrie has developed nicely in the minor leagues and has a legitimate shot at a long NHL career. While he might not have a future starting in Winnipeg, there’s no reason to think he couldn’t do an adequate job playing 20-25 games this season and allowing Hellebuyck—who led the NHL with 67 regular season appearances in 2017-18—to remain fresher for the eventual playoff run. Comrie recorded an .872 save percentage in three games with the Jets last season, but had a .916 in the AHL forming one of the best tandems in the minor leagues alongside Michael Hutchinson.

The biggest thing standing in his way is the fact that he is still waiver-exempt, meaning unless he seriously outplays Brossoit in camp he’ll likely start in the minors once again. Brossoit is also on a one-way contract for this season, though the $650K cap hit would not count towards the Jets salary cap if he cleared waivers and was assigned to the minor leagues. At worst, Comrie will be handling the starting duties for the Manitoba Moose and will be ready for a call-up if necessary. He’ll still be a restricted free agent at the end of this deal.

Fourteen Restricted Free Agents Remain Unsigned

We’re now just a few weeks away from the start of training camp, and there are still 14 restricted free agents without contracts. Many of those who remain unsigned are key players for their teams, and starting training camp without them isn’t a desired situation for either side. That means early September should be filled with new contracts, including several that should be quite substantial.

As CapFriendly points out, there is still technically a possibility of an offer sheet for these players given their status as restricted free agents but it seems extremely unlikely at this point. Offer sheets are so rarely used in today’s NHL and would require a team to have ample cap space this late in the summer. Remember too that an offer sheet is not something a team can do without the player’s consent, and none of these situations seem contentious currently.

Instead, these contracts are taking a long time because they have real impact on their team’s cap situations going forward. William Nylander wants a long-term deal from the Toronto Maple Leafs, but with Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, Jake Gardiner and others needing new contracts within the next year there are plenty of reasons to think a bridge deal could be more beneficial. Nylander’s cap hit is extremely important for the Maple Leafs going forward, and given that it will likely fall somewhere around Dylan Larkin’s $6.1MM and David Pastrnak’s $6.67MM it takes time to work out.

For a team like Edmonton, locking up Darnell Nurse provides perhaps even more challenges. The team needs Nurse desperately this season given their already ailing blue line, but also has to worry about how they’ll add to the team down the line if they buy out any of his free agent years. That would send his cap hit skyrocketing, and the team has just $3.9MM left for this season and more than $62MM already committed for 2019-20. A bridge deal in Edmonton might be the only possible contract, but it might not be what Nurse is looking for.

The same could be said in Calgary, where the Flames can’t be exactly sure what they have in Noah Hanifin. While he has a high draft pedigree and has been a fine player in Carolina through the early part of his career, there’s no indication yet that he can be a franchise defenseman capable of leading their blue line down the road. With many of their other defensemen closing in on unrestricted free agency and the back half of their careers, the Flames have to be careful where they commit the most dollars.

Overall, this is a very talented group that is still unsigned as we inch closer to September and should make for some fireworks just before camp. In the worst case scenario some of them will miss camp and perhaps even hold out into the season, at which point we’ll be looking at a December 1st deadline instead of mid-September. That’s when every RFA needs a contract by or else they forfeit the entire 2018-19 season.
