Penguins Suspend Emil Pieniniemi For Failure To Report To ECHL

The Penguins have suspended defense prospect Emil Pieniniemi indefinitely after he refused an assignment to ECHL Wheeling, the team relayed to Taylor Haase of DK Pittsburgh Sports.

Pieniniemi, 20, was a third-round pick by the Pens in 2023. He was actually one of the first players from the class to sign his entry-level contract, doing so just over two weeks after the draft, but was loaned back to his native Finland for 2023-24 and posted a 2-4–6 scoring line in 38 games with Liiga’s Kärpät in his first real taste of pro hockey. Pieniniemi decided to make the jump to North America for 2024-25 but did so at the junior level instead of reporting to one of the Penguins’ affiliates, excelling with 60 points in 60 games for the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs.

He was hoping that would boost his organizational standing as he transitioned to the North American pros this year. He wasn’t expected to compete for an NHL job, but Pieniniemi likely hoped his offensive explosion in Kingston last year would help guide him into a regular job with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. That wasn’t the case. After being cut from Pittsburgh’s camp on Sep. 27 and assigned to WBS, he wasn’t in the AHL club’s camp for very long, either. He was sent down further to ECHL Wheeling on Oct. 5, but never showed up to Pittsburgh’s second-tier affiliate and was left off their opening night roster this week.

“Pieniniemi made it known to the team shortly after he was cut from Wilkes-Barre’s camp that he would not be going to Wheeling,” Haase reports. “The multiple team sources I asked were not aware of Pieniniemi’s current physical whereabouts.”

Pieniniemi has already been paid his $95K signing bonus for this season. However, he won’t be earning his $82.5K minor-league salary while suspended. He still has two years left after this one on his ELC since his lack of NHL playing time in 2023-24 or 2024-25 caused the deal to slide twice. Any further disputes could lead to Pieniniemi landing on unconditional waivers and seeing his contract mutually terminated, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Evening Notes: Lankinen, Nichushkin, Pieniniemi

The Vancouver Canucks are narrowing in on a deal with goaltender Kevin Lankinen reports CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal. He’ll support the team as they await the return of Thatcher Demko, who is taking longer than expected to recover from his knee injury.

A deal in Vancouver would move Lankinen on from four seasons in the Central Division – split between the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators. He debuted as Chicago’s starter in the shortened 2020-21 season, recording 17 wins and a .909 save percentage across 37 games. It was an impressive start to the undrafted free agent’s career, though not strong enough to hang onto the starting role when Chicago signed Marc-Andre Fleury that summer. Lankinen has been a proud backup ever since, with his ice time dwindling to just 24 games with Nashville last season.

Vancouver could offer Lankinen his first true shot at a starting role in a while – though he’ll have to beat out postseason wonder Arturs Silovs. Silovs took over for Demko in last year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs with just nine career games to his name. He’d end up playing 10 more, posting a .898 save percentage and showing plenty of ability to win games when his team needed him. Silovs will be the favorite for the starting role entering camp, but Lankinen could offer quick relief should he struggle.

Other notes from around the league:

  • Sergey Fedotov, a former scout for the Russian National Team, told Russia’s Sports.ru that Colorado Avalanche winger Valeri Nichushkin will be ready to return to the NHL in November. Nichushkin entered the NHL Player’s Assistance Program in May, missing out on the bulk of the postseason after a red-hot start – nine goals and 10 points in eight games. Nichushkin scored a collective 63 points in 62 games this season and will stand as a top option in Colorado’s lineup when he returns, though speculation will remain until the team formally announces his return.
  • Pittsburgh Penguins defense prospect Emil Pieniniemi – the 91st pick in the 2023 NHL Draft – has signed with the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs for the 2024-25 season. The move kicks off his career in North America after growing up through Kärpät’s junior system and playing 39 games with the Liiga club. He scored six points in those appearances but has already looked more impressive in international play this summer – posting four points in four games during Finland’s U20 friendlies. He’ll now look to maintain that scoring momentum into the much-quicker-paced CHL next season.

Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Emil Pieniniemi

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced today that they’ve signed defense prospect Emil Pieniniemi to a three-year, entry-level contract, which PuckPedia reports carries an NHL salary of $775K, a signing bonus of $95K, a games-played bonus of $80K, and a minors salary of $82.5K in all three seasons. The contract carries a cap hit of $870K.

The 18-year-old Finn was Pittsburgh’s third-round pick in this year’s draft at 91st overall. He’s the first player taken outside of the first two rounds to sign his entry-level contract.

Pieniniemi did go a bit earlier in the draft than some thought, as most public scouts had him pegged as a fifth- or sixth-round pick. It’s obvious the Penguins believe in Pieniniemi’s defensive upside, which he showed as the hallmark of his game while playing in the Finnish U-20 circuit last season.

He does carry a prototypical frame for a defender that NHL teams desire at 6-foot-2, although he still needs to grow into it a little more before he’s pro-ready. His game revolves around his physicality and how he uses it to shut down the other team’s attack, with Elite Prospects describing his defensive style as “pinching aggressively and gapping up early, guiding opponents towards the boards before engaging physically.”

That’s not to say he’s an offensive liability – he did show the possibility of being an adept puck-moving defender at the pro level. Playing for Karpat in the top Finnish junior league, Pieniniemi tallied 13 points in 31 games and made his professional debut in the Liiga, dressing for one game with Karpat in December 2022 but not seeing any ice time.

Pittsburgh will likely loan Pieniniemi back to Karpat for the 2023-24 season, which will result in his entry-level contract sliding to start in 2024-25.
