Kraken Recall Devin Shore

The Kraken announced they’ve recalled winger Devin Shore from AHL Coachella Valley on Wednesday. To clear space on the 23-man roster, forwards Max McCormick and Marián Studenič were reassigned to Coachella Valley. Freeing up an additional roster spot in the transaction now means the team can activate winger André Burakovsky, who head coach Dave Hakstol said today is close to a return, off injured reserve.

Shore, 29, receives his second recall of the season. A 2012 second-round pick of the Stars and a longtime teammate of Seattle defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, with whom he spent multiple seasons within Dallas, Shore signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Kraken last August. He was coming off a middling season with the Oilers in which he registered nine points in 47 games and earned his first AHL demotion since beginning his pro career in 2015.

The 6-foot-1, 209-pound winger has logged nearly 490 games of pro experience, 431 of which have come in the NHL. He made nine appearances for the Kraken earlier this season, recording a goal and an assist in 7:46 of average ice time, before being returned to Coachella Valley in mid-November. The Kraken have been rotating extra forwards often over the course of the season, giving multiple farmhands in southern California a chance to see NHL ice.

He’s off to a strong start in the minors this year, recording three goals and three assists through nine games. While Coachella Valley is losing his services for now, they certainly aren’t complaining about McCormick and Studenič returning to the farm. McCormick, despite the brief call-up, still leads them in points with 17 through 16 games, while Studenič ranks sixth on the team with 11.

Seattle Kraken Reassign Devin Shore

The Seattle Kraken have reassigned forward Devin Shore to their AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Forward Brandon Tanev, who has been out with an injury since October 10th, was a full participant in practice today in Seattle. In order to activate him and return him to coach Dave Hakstol’s lineup, the team needed to clear a roster spot, so Shore is headed to the AHL.

Shore has been with the Kraken since October and played in the team’s game last night against the Edmonton Oilers. A veteran bottom-six center, Shore has 431 career NHL games on his resume. He scored one goal and two points with the Kraken this season, skating in a total of nine games.

He spent last season as a depth forward for the Oilers, scoring nine points in 47 games. Shore hasn’t been a full-time AHLer ever in his career, so it’s likely that he’ll find his way back to the Kraken roster at some point this season.

The Kraken recalled forward Devin Shore from the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds today, per a team announcement. No corresponding transaction was needed, with ample cap space and an open spot on the 23-man roster.

Shore made his NHL debut back in 2015-16 with the Dallas Stars, eventually becoming a bottom-six fixture there before making later career stops with the Ducks, Blue Jackets and Oilers. After appearing in 47 contests for Edmonton in 2022-23, recording nine points, Shore hit the free agent market and signed a one-year, two-way deal worth $775K in the majors and $250K in the minors with the Kraken in late August. Shore was waived preseason and cleared, and he’s made one appearance thus far with the Firebirds, recording a -1 rating. All in all, the second-round pick of the Stars in 2012 has notched 50 goals, 85 assists and 135 points in his 422-game NHL career.

It could be a lengthy stint on the NHL roster for Shore unless the Kraken decide they have other players down in the minors they’d like to audition. He comes up to serve as an extra forward after the news that Brandon Tanev will be out until around Thanksgiving with a lower-body injury sustained on opening night against the Golden Knights. Shore can stay on the Kraken’s roster for up to 30 days and 10 NHL appearances before he’d need to clear waivers again to head back to the Firebirds. In the meantime, Shore will likely cycle in as their fourth-line left wing with rookie winger Tye Kartye, who sat for Tanev on opening night but has played in the three games since.

Seattle Kraken Sign Devin Shore

The Seattle Kraken announced they’ve signed forward Devin Shore to a one-year, two-way contract today. The deal will carry the league minimum cap hit of $775K. PuckPedia reports his minor-league salary is $250K.

Shore will now look to crack a deep Kraken forward group that has remained largely unchanged since the end of last season. It’s a group that boasted multiple 20-goal scorers up and down the lineup and earned them their first playoff series victory in franchise history.

Shore’s played in nine NHL seasons dating back to a three-game stint with the Dallas Stars in 2015-16. He would then play in all 82 games for the Stars the following two seasons before making short stops with the Anaheim Ducks and Columbus Blue Jackets prior to COVID-19 pausing league operations in 2020. He would then sign as a free agent with the Edmonton Oilers shortly before the 2020-21 campaign began, where he spent the last three seasons.

He opened his full-time NHL career with back-to-back 30-point seasons in 2017 and 2018 but has since slipped out of an everyday role in the lineup. He’s gone on to post 50 goals and 135 points in 422 career games, but he scored just once and added eight assists for nine points in 47 games with the Oilers last season. As a result, he was assigned to the minors for a five-game stint with AHL Bakersfield for the first time in seven years.

A winger who can chip in at the bottom of the lineup, Shore will be hard-pressed to make the Kraken out of camp. The edge on any spots will likely go to 2022 fourth-overall pick Shane Wright and veteran utility forward Pierre-Édouard Bellemare, whom the team signed to a one-year, one-way deal earlier this summer. If he’s placed on waivers and clears, he’ll likely suit up for the majority of 2023-24 with the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Roster Notes: Kings, Shore, Stars

The Los Angeles Kings have announced via a press release that forward Carl Grundstrom has been activated off of injured reserve, while forward Trevor Moore has been placed on the injured reserve. Grundstrom returns from a rather lengthy stay on the IR, having not played since January 11th against the San Jose Sharks. A very physical player, Grundstrom is known to rack up over 100 hits a season, adding a certain physicality to the bottom six of the King’s lineup.

Unfortunately for the Kings, they will lose an important piece of their roster for the near future. Since being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2019-20 season, Moore has really come into his own in Los Angeles. Scoring a career-high of 23 points in his first full year with the Kings in 2020-21, Moore followed that up with his coming out party in 2021-22, scoring a total of 48 points last year. After that impressive run, the Kings decided to keep Moore around long-term, signing him to a 5-year, $21MM contract, ending after the 2027-28 season. Continuing close to a 0.5 PPG pace this year, Moore will be leaving a hole in the King’s roster.

  • After trading away Jesse Puljujarvi to the Carolina Hurricanes this morning, Devin Shore has been recalled by the Edmonton Oilers from their AHL affiliate Bakersfield Condors. Playing in under nine minutes a night this season, Shore has scored a total of five points in 33 games. Only 28 years old, Shore is now in his 8th season in the NHL. Not serving on the powerplay or penalty kill once this year, Shore will likely see limited action with the Oilers in the coming days.
  • Continuing on their carousel, the Dallas Stars announced that they have once again loaned forwards Frederik Olofsson and Fredrik Karlstrom back to their AHL affiliate Texas Stars. As he is loaned back to the minors for the 8th time this season, Olofsson has managed to suit up in 17 games for the Stars. Registering only four points on the year, Olofsson has been used sparingly by Stars’ head coach Peter DeBoer, failing to average over 10 minutes of action a night. Similarly, Karlstrom will be loaned back to Texas for the 5th time this year. Having served in only three games this year for Dallas, Karlstrom has been employed much the same as his Swedish counterpart.

The Edmonton Oilers have announced that forward Devin Shore has been loaned to their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. Shore was originally called up to the Oilers on February 18th. This move signals that Klim Kostin is likely ready to return to the lineup after an injury-related absence.

The 28-year-old is a veteran of over 400 NHL games and managed to get into coach Jay Woodcroft’s Oilers lineup four times in this stint on their roster. Shore played reasonably well, getting between seven and a half and thirteen minutes of ice time per game.

He registered an assist and scored a goal, and the Oilers went 2-1-1- during his time in their lineup. While he’s spent the majority of his season at the NHL level and therefore can’t be entirely thrilled about heading back to the minor leagues, he is firmly in a position to be called back up to the active roster.

In 33 games this season, Shore has five points. He’s been more of a difference-maker at the AHL level, though, where he has five points in five games.

It’s been Shore’s first bit of AHL action since 2015-16 when he played for the Texas Stars, and he’s performed quite well, cementing his status as a viable depth option for Edmonton. Shore is a pending unrestricted free agent who is making $850k against the cap this season.

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled forward Devin Shore from the team’s AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. This move returns Shore to Edmonton after he was reassigned to Bakersfield a few days ago.

Oilers forward Klim Kostin missed the team’s shootout loss to the New York Rangers due to an illness, so should he be unable to play in the team’s game tomorrow against the Colorado Avalanche, one would assume that Shore has been brought back to the active roster to fill in Kostin’s vacated lineup spot.

According to PuckPedia, this recall of Shore is as an emergency roster exception, meaning he does not carry a cap hit until the team either has 20 healthy players and/or sufficient cap space to count him.

Shore, 28, hasn’t played in the NHL yet in 2023, and last saw the ice for the Condors on January 28th. Shore has played in five AHL games this season, and scored five points in that span. At the NHL level, the 404-game veteran has scored three points in 29 games so far this season.

At just 8:42 per night, Shore averages the least amount of ice time by any Oilers forward this year with at least 20 games played. He has gotten a few looks on the team’s penalty kill, but in general coach Jay Woodcroft has used Shore sparingly.

Last season was a similar story, with Shore skating in 49 games for the Oilers, averaging nine and half minutes per night with over a minute per night played on the penalty kill. While Shore has two seasons of 30-plus points on his resume, that secondary offensive element to his game has largely eroded as he’s settled into the depth role he now occupies.

Without Kostin in the lineup, the Oilers were forced to play with an opening in their fourth-line left-wing roster spot. While Shore has operated more as a center throughout his professional career, he should be able to fill that spot on the wing next to Derek Ryan and Jesse Puljujarvi if he does end up getting into the lineup.

Morning Notes: Knies, Shore, Studenic

The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the teams rumored to be interested in several top names at the trade deadline, but they might have their late-season addition already in the system. Matthew Knies has 17 goals and 31 points in 30 games this year for the University of Minnesota and is “likely” to sign with the Maple Leafs at the end of the college season, according to Joshua Kloke of The Athletic.

Knies also joined Leafs Morning Take with Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill and explained he believes he can be a production pro player this spring, after choosing to go back to college last year. The 20-year-old winger recently came in at No. 42 in Scott Wheeler’s ranking of the best drafted prospects across the league.

  • Devin Shore has been sent back to the AHL once again, leaving the Edmonton Oilers with the opportunity to activate Kailer Yamamoto if they can clear just $1.125MM in cap space. That happens to be the exact amount that is buried when a player costing more than that is sent to the minor leagues. Jesse Puljujarvi remains the most likely player to be waived, though there are countless other ways the Oilers could clear the room, including the trade market.
  • Speaking of bouncing back and forth, Marian Studenic is on his way back to the Texas Stars today. The 24-year-old forward played fewer than ten minutes for the Dallas Stars yesterday, his third appearance of the season. As one of the few teams not currently using long-term injured reserve relief, Dallas can bank cap space between games by reducing their roster as much as possible.

The Nashville Predators aren’t going to be buyers this year. That’s according to general manager David Poile, who joined Nashville radio this morning to explain his trade deadline plans.

I do not think we are a buyer, let’s start with that. If things don’t change more favorably and get into some kind of winning streak, we certainly could be a seller. But that’s not today. 

The Predators sit fifth in the Central Division, and despite a 25-20-6 record, actually have a negative goal differential on the year. However, what they would sell isn’t clear, given the only pending UFAs on the roster are Mark Jankowski and Kevin Lankinen. Teams rarely target players with long-term contracts at the deadline, and the Predators have 10 of 23 roster spots inked through at least 2024-25.

  • Devin Shore is back up for the Edmonton Oilers, meaning Kailer Yamamoto won’t be coming off injured reserve just yet. Klim Kostin was back on the ice with the team today, and Leon Draisatil was only missing for maintenance and is expected to play tomorrow. For Yamamoto to return, the Oilers need to clear a significant amount of cap space; most expect that to be the waiving or trade of Jesse Puljujarvi, though nothing has materialized to this point.
  • Jonah Gadjovich will be out on a week-to-week basis, according to Curtis Pashelka of the Bay Area News Group. Kevin Labanc will jump back into the San Jose Sharks lineup on the fourth line, potentially giving the team a chance to showcase the forward before the trade deadline. The 27-year-old Labanc still carries a $4.725MM cap hit through next season and has 25 points in 45 games.
