Wild Recall Brendan Gaunce, Devin Shore

Dec. 27: Both Gaunce and Shore are back on the Wild roster ahead of their road trip, the team announced Thursday night. Their active roster now stands at 22 players.

Dec. 24: The Wild announced Tuesday that they’ve reassigned forwards Brendan Gaunce and Devin Shore to AHL Iowa. Their spots on the active roster will remain open over the holiday break, and the pair of demotions will allow them to exit their LTIR pool and begin accruing cap space again over the next few days. One or both could find themselves back on the roster for Friday’s game against the Stars, depending on the health of injured forwards Joel Eriksson Ek and Jakub Lauko.

Gaunce inked a two-year, two-way deal in free agency and was recalled from Iowa last week after clearing waivers during training camp. He has no points in three appearances with an unsightly -3 rating given his limited ice time. The veteran Gaunce has also fallen a tad short of expectations in the AHL, posting eight goals, six assists, 14 points, and a -10 rating in 21 games. He’s producing just 0.67 points per game after clicking at 0.83 over the past three seasons in Cleveland while with the Blue Jackets organization.

Throughout his career, the now-30-year-old Gaunce has been an expert top-six producer in minor-league action but has never carved out anything above a fringe fourth-line role at the NHL level. In 180 appearances in parts of nine seasons with Vancouver, Boston, Columbus, and Minnesota, Gaunce has 13 goals, 15 assists, 28 points, and a -16 rating while averaging 10:43 per contest. He had a career-high five goals and seven points in 30 games with the Jackets in 2021-22.

Shore, 30, signed a two-way deal over the summer and, like Gaunce, failed to secure a depth role out of camp. He’s passed through waivers twice this season without being claimed and has one assist in 16 games for Minnesota over the past month or so, locking down a more steady fourth-line role for the time being with injuries affecting their forward group. He’s averaged 8:14 per contest and has 19 hits, but he has been a pretty apparent defensive liability. The Wild only control 37.6% of shot attempts with Shore on the ice at 5-on-5.

Wild Place Yakov Trenin On IR, Recall Devin Shore, Travis Boyd

Dec. 20: Shore is back on the active roster today, as is forward Travis Boyd, according to Michael Russo of The Athletic. Boyd made a pair of appearances with the Wild last month amid one of a couple of recalls this season, averaging just 7:39 per game and controlling an abysmal 21.9% of shot attempts at even strength. The 31-year-old leads Iowa in scoring this season with 18 points (3 G, 15 A) in 17 games and has nearly 300 games of NHL experience under his belt with the Coyotes, Capitals, Maple Leafs and Canucks in addition to his brief stint in Minnesota. The Wild’s active roster is now full.

Dec. 19: The Wild made a pair of roster moves in advance of their next game against Utah on Friday.  The team announced (Twitter link) that winger Yakov Trenin has been placed on injured reserve while winger Devin Shore has been assigned to AHL Iowa.

Trenin has missed three straight games due to an upper-body injury.  Assuming this placement is back-dated, he’ll be eligible to return as soon as this weekend.  The 27-year-old is in his first season with Minnesota after signing a four-year, $14MM contract with them back in free agency, a move that hasn’t worked as well as anyone would have hoped.

After putting up double-digit goals in each of the last three years, Trenin has struggled considerably offensively this season, lighting the lamp just twice while adding one assist in 29 games.  While he sits second on the team in hits with 82, it’s safe to say that GM Bill Guerin was expecting more from his biggest free agent addition from July.

As for Shore, he cleared waivers on Tuesday but stayed with Minnesota for a couple of extra days and played last night against Florida.  He has played in 13 NHL contests so far but has been held off the scoresheet while averaging a little over eight minutes a night.  The veteran has been a strong contributor with Iowa, however, notching two goals and eight assists in 14 appearances with them.

Wild’s Devin Shore Clears Waivers

Dec. 17: Shore cleared waivers, Friedman reports. He’ll remain on the Wild’s roster for now, adds Michael Russo of The Athletic.

Dec. 16: The Minnesota Wild have placed forward Devin Shore on waivers, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The move was alluded to by Michael Russo of The Athletic earlier today. It will create more room for Minnesota to find a productive depth forward as they look to fill-in for the injured Jakub Lauko.

Shore has played in 12 NHL games this season but hasn’t recorded any scoring or penalties. The only changes to his stat line has come in the form of a +1, seven blocked shots, and 17 hits. Shore is one of five Wild forwards to play in multiple games with no scoring, joining a group that includes top prospect Liam Ohgren and Iowa Wild scoring leader Travis Boyd.

The scoring drought in Minnesota is a crater for Shore, after declining productivity in each of the last three seasons. A fourth-line forward wherever he goes, Shore recorded 11 points in 49 games with the Edmonton Oilers in 2021-22, but followed it up with just nine points in 47 games the following year. He attempted to spur that downward trend with a move to Seattle last season, but he ended up with just four points in 21 games with the Kraken – and spent most of the year in the minor leagues. Still, his AHL scoring was promising – 25 points in 39 games – and Shore once again tried to spur things with a team-change. He signed a one-year, league-minimum contract with Minnesota this summer, and had to work his way up to the NHL roster after starting in the minors. He managed that quickly, with 10 points in 14 games with Iowa – but has since hit a complete stall. This waiver placement should set him up to rediscover his scoring, and better plan for ways to translate it to Minnesota’s fourth-line when he’s next called upon.

This is the seventh waiver placement of Shore’s career, and his second of the season. Despite playing for six different teams in his 10-year career, Shore hasn’t once been claimed off of waivers.

Wild Assign Reese Johnson, Recall Brendan Gaunce

5:30 PM: The Minnesota Wild have recalled forward Brendan Gaunce, after placing Devin Shore on waivers, per Michael Russo of The Athletic. Gaunce would become the 31st player to suit up for the Wild, should he step into the lineup. He gets the call after scoring eight goals and 14 points in 21 games with the AHL’s Iowa Wild.

11:30 AM: The morning has started out with a heap of small-news roster transactions, headlined by the Minnesota Wild assigning center Reese Johnson to the Iowa Wild, per Michael Russo of The Athletic. Johnson stepped into Minnesota’s last two games to cover injuries to Yakov Trenin and Jakub Lauko. Trenin is expected to work his way back into the lineup before the team hosts Florida on Wednesday. That would alleviate some of the lineup pressure, though Russo points out that Minnesota will still need to recall a forward. He adds that the team could also place forwards Devin Shore or Ben Jones on waivers to create room for an additional call-up.

Johnson’s assignment gives Minnesota a chance to assess the playing field. They’ve had terrible luck with their extra forwards so far this season – with none of Johnson (three games), Shore (12 games), or Jones (13 games) recording any scoring in their opportunities this season. The lack of production has also extended to Michael Milne, Travis Boyd, and even top prospect Liam Ohgren – making the question of who to call up a tough one to answer.

Minnesota will need someone to step up for Lauko, who will be forced to miss at least the next two games with his placement on injured reserve. The top of their call-up sheet seems covered by this list of scoreless forwards, but Minnesota may opt for a new face instead. If that’s the case, it’d likely be Brendan Gaunce, Hunter Haight, and Luke Toporowski vying for NHL ice time. Gaunce (14 points in 21 games) and Haight (12 points in 23 games) rank near the top of the Iowa Wild in scoring, while Toporowski (nine points in 11 games) ranks fourth on the team in point-per-game scoring. Haight and Toporowski are still awaiting their NHL debuts.

Minnesota is 7-3-0 in their last 10 games, but have been outscored 14-4 in their losses. Scoring depth down the lineup would certainly support Minnesota’s game-to-game consistency – but which forward will bring that scoring continues to be an open question.

Wild Recall Ben Jones, Devin Shore

The Wild brought up forwards Ben Jones and Devin Shore from AHL Iowa on Sunday, per a team release.

One or both could make their Wild debuts on Tuesday against the Blues. They replace up-and-coming forwards Michael Milne and Liam Öhgren on the active roster, both of whom were reassigned to Iowa earlier Sunday.

If Jones plays, it would be just his third career NHL game. The 25-year-old last appeared at the top level with the Golden Knights in Nov. 2021, recording 2 PIMs, a shot on goal and four hits while averaging 8:03 in a pair of contests.

The final pick of Vegas’ inaugural 2017 draft class, the 6’0″ Jones has developed into a top-six option at the AHL level despite his lack of NHL time. While the Knights opted not to qualify him when his entry-level contract expired in 2022, he caught on with the Flames organization for the past two seasons and compiled 97 points (38 G, 59 A) in 143 games.

Jones’ six seasons of AHL experience but lack of NHL games played made him eligible for Group VI unrestricted free agency this past summer, and he was plucked off the market by the Wild on a two-year, two-way deal amid a flurry of minor signings from Minnesota on July 1. It’s worked out so far, as Jones leads Iowa in scoring with 12 points (4 G, 8 A) in 14 games and earned his first NHL recall in three years in the process.

Shore has far more top-level experience than Jones – 441 games separating the two, to be exact. The 30-year-old Shore also inked a two-way deal with the Wild when free agency opened and has two goals and 10 points in 14 games with Iowa after clearing waivers, although his -11 rating is second-worst on the team behind Brendan Gaunce.

A long-time bottom-six fixture with the Stars, Ducks, Blue Jackets, and Oilers, Shore’s 21 NHL games last season with the Kraken were his fewest in a campaign since a three-game trial with Dallas in 2015-16. He’s spent parts of the last three seasons in the AHL after going seven years without a minor-league assignment, largely due to steadily declining offense and ice time at the NHL level. Shore had only four points for Seattle last year and averaged 8:00 per game, a career-low capping off a third straight season in which he averaged under 10 minutes per game.

Both Jones and Shore can remain on Minnesota’s roster for up to 30 days and play 10 games before needing waivers again to return to the AHL. The Wild have been dipping into their AHL depth in recent days with Mats Zuccarello on injured reserve and Joel Eriksson Ek out day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

Wild Sign Eight Players To Two-Way Deals

The Wild have signed forwards Travis Boyd and Devin Shore, supplementing their depth on offense after bringing in Yakov Trenin on a four-year deal earlier today. Both are two-way deals. Boyd’s pays him $775K in the NHL with a $550K guarantee, per The Athletic’s Michael Russo, while Shore’s pays him $775K NHL/$400K AHL with a $450K guarantee, per PuckPedia.

Boyd found a comfortable spot among the Arizona Coyotes’ bottom six over the last three seasons, kicked off by his career-high 17 goals and 35 points in 2021-22. Boyd followed that up with 15 goals and 35 points last year, though he was held to just 16 games this year after a torn pectoral ended his season in December. Boyd still scored eight points in the outings – sticking with his recent propensity for scoring – though he remains hard to gauge. Now 30, Boyd is a bit hard to project coming off injury; likely the reason for his two-way deal. But he’ll be in a prime position to bounce back next season, among a Wild bottom six in need of an impact center.

If Boyd can’t hold onto a role, Minnesota has hedged their bets with Shore – who got demoted to the AHL after 21 games in the NHL this year. He responded well to the send-down, though, recording 25 points across 39 regular season games and 13 points in 18 playoff performances. Shore has totaled 443 NHL games across the last nine seasons, though he’s managed just 139 points – and hasn’t surpassed 15 points in a year since 2018-19. Boyd’s scoring over the last two years will give him an advantage on the depth chart, though both players will compete for a consistent role at the bottom of Minnesota’s lineup.

Minnesota also inked 27-year-old right-shot defenseman Joseph Cecconi to a two-way deal ($775K NHL/$325K AHL), per PuckPedia. He had 13 points in 58 AHL games played last season with the Rochester Americans, the Sabres’ top minor-league affiliate.

The organization also announced two-way deals with forwards Brendan Gaunce, Reese Johnson, Ben Jones, defenseman Cameron Crotty, and goaltender Troy Grosenick. All eight players should open the season with the organization’s AHL affiliate, the Iowa Wild, and serve as valuable depth for Minnesota if the team succumbs to injury at any point during the 2024-25 NHL season.

Devin Shore Clears Waivers

1/30: Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that Shore has cleared waivers, and can be safely reassigned to AHL Coachella Valley.

1/29: The Seattle Kraken have placed forward Devin Shore on waivers with the intention of assigning him to the AHL. Shore has appeared in 21 games with the Kraken this season, netting one goal and four points. He’s also played nine AHL games, scoring six points.

Shore is in his first season with the Kraken, signing a one-year, two-way, $775K contract with the team this summer. The deal marked his move away from the Edmonton Oilers, who he spent three seasons and 134 games with from 2020 to 2023. This move becomes the fifth time that Shore has been placed on waivers, with the Oilers waiving him twice in each of the last two seasons. He’s passed through unclaimed every time, though he only played five games with Edmonton’s AHL affiliate during his time in the organization.

Shore was originally drafted by the Dallas Stars in the second round of the 2012 NHL Draft – the same round that produced Damon Severson, Chris Tierney, Jordan Martinook, and Jake McCabe. It was an impressive round in what was a very deep 2012 Draft and Shore has certainly contributed, managing 443 career NHL games and 139 points. He made his professional debut after the end of the University of Maine’s 2014-15 season, playing in 19 AHL games and scoring six points. His NHL rookie season came in 2016-17, with Shore playing in 82 games and scoring 13 goals and 33 points with Dallas – all career-highs.

Brendan Smith And Austin Watson Fined By DOPS

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety had a busy day today levying two fines to two different players. New Jersey Devils defenseman Brendan Smith and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Austin Watson will be both lighter in the wallet after the official announcements this afternoon.

Smith was fined for a dangerous trip in last night’s game against the Seattle Kraken. The incident occurred midway through the third period when Smith tripped Kraken center Devin Shore, which led to a minor penalty. Smith’s fine is the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement and will cost him $2,864.58. Smith’s fine comes just a week after he was suspended two games for slashing Philadelphia forward Travis Konecny.

Meanwhile, Watson was fined for an incident that occurred at the end of regulation in a game against the Nashville Predators. Watson fired a puck at Predators defenseman Jeremy Lauzon and was quickly assessed a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and a 10-minute misconduct. The penalties had little consequence for Watson as the game was over at that point, however, they did initiate a brawl on the ice. Watson will face a fine of $2,022.57 which is the maximum allowed under the CBA. Lauzon appeared injured on the play and struggled to get off the ice as he slammed his stick in frustration, no word yet on his status.

The money from both players’ fines will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
