Blue Jackets To Activate Denton Mateychuk From Injured Reserve
The Blue Jackets are expected to activate defenseman Denton Mateychuk from injured reserve in the coming days, per head coach Rick Bowness (via the team’s Jeff Svoboda). He was ticketed to enter the lineup for tonight’s game against the Kings, but that contest has been postponed to March 9 due to inclement weather in Columbus, the league announced. With no roster spots available, they’ll now have until their next game on Wednesday against the Flyers to make a move to activate Mateychuk.
Mateychuk, 21, is in his second NHL season. After being selected 12th overall in the 2022 draft, this year was the first time he made the team out of camp. However, he did record 13 points in 45 games for the Blue Jackets last year after a midseason recall from AHL Cleveland, earning 12th place in Calder Trophy voting.
This season, the 5’11” lefty has done a much more consistent job of flashing his ceiling as a high-end top-four piece. Averaging 20:20 of ice time per game, he’s split the year between playing alongside veteran righty Damon Severson and seeing top-pair duties on his off side with Zach Werenski. He’s third on the team with a +5 rating and has already trounced his offensive production from last season with an 8-13–21 scoring line in 44 games. He’s tied with Blackhawks rookie Artyom Levshunov for fifth in the league in scoring among defensemen 22 or younger.
He’s missed the last six games with an upper-body injury sustained early in a Jan. 11 matchup against the Mammoth. That was Dean Evason’s last game behind the Jackets’ bench before being swapped out for Bowness, so Wednesday will be Mateychuk’s first outing with Columbus’ new boss. With the Blue Jackets’ youngsters largely receiving a longer leash under the new regime, Mateychuk shouldn’t be concerned about his ice time dropping.
Blue Jackets Activate Mason Marchment, Place Denton Mateychuk On IR
The Columbus Blue Jackets announced today that forward Mason Marchment has been activated off injured reserve in advance of the team’s game tonight against the Dallas Stars. In a corresponding move, the team placed injured blueliner Denton Mateychuk on IR.
Marchment missed the last eight games due to an upper-body injury, an ailment that halted the momentum he appeared to be building in Columbus after his mid-season trade from the Seattle Kraken. Marchment made an instant impact with the Blue Jackets, scoring five goals and seven points in seven games since the trade.
As a pending UFA, Marchment’s performances down the stretch in 2025-26 were always set to carry an outsized level of importance, at least personally to the player’s future. Marchment’s trade to Columbus only further emphasized the importance of his play in the coming weeks, as he has a chance to secure a spot in the Blue Jackets’ future plans.
The 30-year-old forward only managed four goals and 13 points in 29 games with the Kraken before the trade, prompting some worry that Marchment’s days as a 20-goal, 45 or 50-point scorer could be in the rearview mirror. His performance through seven games as a Blue Jacket went a long way towards silencing those doubts, and he’ll now get the chance to strengthen his position entering negotiations on his next contract.
Replacing Marchment on IR is Mateychuk, who has been out since Jan. 11 with an upper-body injury. It was reported earlier this week that the hope for Mateychuk is that he’ll be able to return at some point in the latter portion of this week. The Blue Jackets made Mateychuk’s IR placement retroactive to Jan. 11, meaning he’s eligible to return to the team’s active roster whenever he’s healthy.
Columbus has a full 23-man roster at this moment, so a corresponding move is likely to be necessary whenever Mateychuk is able to return. Seeing as blueliner Dante Fabbro is set to miss at least a week with a lower-body injury, it’s likely that whenever Mateychuk is ready to return, Fabbro will replace him on IR to open up a roster spot.
Mateychuk, 21, is a key young defenseman for the Blue Jackets. He’s their No. 3 defenseman in terms of ice time this season, averaging 20:20 per game including 2:12 on the penalty kill. He’s also managed to score eight goals and 21 points in 44 games.

New Blue Jackets Head Coach Rick Bowness is missing two key defenders in his first game behind the bench tonight, as Denton Mateychuk (upper-body injury) and Damon Severson (illness) are unable to play against Calgary, per Aaron Portzline of The Athletic.
If he’d been able to go, Mateychuk would have tied his rookie season total’s 45 games played in last season, but will have to wait for now. The 21-year-old left early on Sunday against Utah, and will be getting a second opinion, as the club recalled Dysin Mayo this afternoon. Their 12th overall selection in 2022 has progressed nicely this season, averaging 20:20 of ice time with 21 points in 44 games.
Severson, 31, has recorded 17 points in 45 games, tonight being the first contest of the season he has had to miss.
Coming in tonight is Jake Christiansen, along with Mayo. The former has served as the Jackets’ seventh defender often this year, with one helper in 26 games, in year five with the Columbus organization.
Mayo, recalled for the fourth time of 2025-26 today, was once a regular with the Arizona Coyotes. The 29-year-old has just seven points in the AHL this season with Cleveland, but he is a conservative right-handed option, capable of jumping into the NHL lineup seamlessly at a moment’s notice.
Elsewhere across the league:
- Shortly before their game in St. Louis, the Carolina Hurricanes announced that Jaccob Slavin will miss tonight’s game due to “injury rehab protocol”. Given that he played 21:41 last night against Detroit, leading all defenders, Slavin will sit out of the second of the back-to-back. Clearly, Carolina is taking no chances with their elite shutdown man coming back from an upper-body injury, who already was re-injured early in his last return in December. The difficulties have limited him to just seven games so far, where he’s notched one assist. Mike Reilly re-enters the lineup tonight, but Slavin figures to be gearing up for full-time duty before long.
- Similar to Slavin, Montreal Canadiens defenseman Kaiden Guhle will also sit tonight, as noted by Marco D’Amico of RG Media. The 23-year-old is in early stages of returning after a groin injury sidelined him for nearly three months. He managed to play just shy of 20 minutes last night in the win over Vancouver. In his absence, Jayden Struble has jumped back in against Washington. The physical depth defender has averaged 14:28 a night in 35 games this season. Meanwhile, Guhle should return by Thursday as the team travels to Buffalo.
Blue Jackets Recall Dysin Mayo On Emergency Basis
The Columbus Blue Jackets announced that they’ve recalled defenseman Dysin Mayo on an emergency basis. It’s the fourth time that Mayo has been recalled this season.
Unfortunately, the emergency recall indicates that the Blue Jackets have fallen below the threshold of having six healthy defensemen on the active roster. Veterans Erik Gudbranson and Brendan Smith are already on the injured reserve, meaning an additional injury has happened.
Earlier today, team reporter Jeff Svoboda shared that blue liner Denton Mateychuk is visiting with a doctor to get a second opinion on the upper-body injury that he sustained in Sunday’s contest against the Utah Mammoth. Mayo’s recall indicates that Mateychuk has been ruled out for tonight’s contest.
Mayo, 29, is in his first year with the Blue Jackets, much of which has been spent with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters. Throughout that duration, he has scored two goals and seven points in 21 games with a -2 rating. It’s a similar production to what he showed last season with the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights, where Mayo scored eight goals and 19 points in 58 contests.
Meanwhile, although it’s expected to be a short-term absence, missing Mateychuk for any duration will certainly hurt Columbus’s chance of winning. The former 12th overall pick of the 2022 NHL Draft is in his first full year with the team, scoring eight goals and 21 points in 44 games, averaging more than 20 minutes of ice time per game.
East Notes: Grebenkin, Norris, Mateychuk
The Philadelphia Flyers have quite a few talented young forwards vying for a limited number of available NHL roster spots this preseason, and one player who has reportedly taken a lead in the race for an NHL job is winger Nikita Grebenkin. The 22-year-old Russian winger is “the clubhouse favorite” to earn an NHL role at this stage of the preseason, according to PHLY Sports’ Charlie O’Connor.
Grebenkin scored in yesterday’s preseason loss to the Boston Bruins, and is reported to have had an impressive camp. Grebenkin arrived in the Flyers organization late last season as part of the team’s trade of Scott Laughton to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 6’2, 220-pound winger scored 28 points in 50 AHL games last season and was recently ranked by Elite Prospects as the club’s 11th-best prospect. If he ends up claiming a spot on the team’s NHL roster, it could come at the expense of another young player vying for a role such as Alex Bump or Jett Luchanko.

- Buffalo Sabres center Josh Norris appears to have a massive opportunity in front of him entering his first full campaign in Western New York, reports Buffalo Hockey Beat’s Bill Hoppe. Norris, who was traded to Buffalo in 2023-24 in a deal that included 2019 seventh-overall pick Dylan Cozens, is currently centering the Sabres’ top line alongside Zach Benson and Tage Thompson, as well as skating with the team’s top power play and penalty-kill units. It appears Norris has the chance to become an all-situations number-one center for the Sabres, something that was not entirely possible with his former team, the Ottawa Senators, due to the presence of star Tim Stutzle. Norris, who has dealt with persistent injuries (namely a shoulder issue) so far in his NHL career, scored 21 goals and 35 points last season and has a career high of 35 goals and 55 points in 66 games from the 2021-22 season.
- Team reporter Jeff Svoboda reports that Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Denton Mateychuk did a full skate with the team this morning, something Svoboda calls a “very good sign” given Mateychuk has been dealing with a groin injury this preseason. Mateychuk, 21, is one of the Blue Jackets’ top young players and is coming off of a season where he was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie team.
East Notes: Stolarz, Mateychuk, Ruutu
Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz has made it known that he doesn’t want to work on a contract extension in-season, meaning the time to get a new deal in place is running out. Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic reports (video link) that the netminder’s camp is looking at recent five-year deals for Kevin Lankinen ($4.5MM) and Karel Vejmelka ($4.75MM) as potential comparables while Toronto’s preference is to do something shorter term. Stolarz is coming off a stellar season that saw him post a 2.14 GAA and a .926 SV% in 34 games but even though he’s 31, he has just 142 career NHL games under his belt and has never played more than those 34 games in a single season. That makes finding legitimate comparable players a little trickier but regardless of that, he’s well on his way to a big raise on the $2.5MM he’ll make this season.

- Blue Jackets defenseman Denton Mateychuk has been dealing with a groin issue since the start of training camp and has yet to suit up in the preseason. However, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic relays (Twitter link) that the blueliner skated today and if all goes well, he could be cleared for contact on Monday. Mateychuk got off to a strong start with AHL Cleveland last season and after being recalled, he was up the rest of the way, getting into 45 games where he had 13 points, earning a spot on the All-Rookie team.
- The Sabres have hired former NHL winger Jarkko Ruutu in a still-to-be-defined capacity, notes Helsingin Sanomat’s Juuso Savilaakso. Ruutu had been working with Columbus in a variety of roles since 2015 but his contract expired this summer. It’s likely that Buffalo’s new senior advisor Jarmo Kekalainen had a big role in this hiring, having been the one to originally hire Ruutu to begin his post-playing career a decade ago.
Denton Mateychuk, Four Others Injured To Start Blue Jackets Training Camp
The Columbus Blue Jackets have plans to ease top defense prospect Denton Mateychuk up to speed at the start of training camp as he recovers from a groin injury, per general manager Don Waddell in a recent conversation with Aaron Portzline of The Athletic. Portzline added that forwards Jordan Dumais (lower-body) and Max McCue (undisclosed) will both be day-to-day with injury, forward Owen Sillinger (knee) will be held out of contact all camp, and defenseman Luca Marrelli (shoulder) will be out until December. All five players are listed on Columbus’ training camp roster.
This news will make Mateychuk worth that much more attention at this year’s camp. He was generally injury-free during his first pro season, which spanned 27 AHL games and 45 NHL games last season. Mateychuk posted four goals and 13 points in a Blue Jackets jersey, along with 25 points in the minor-leagues. It was an incredibly productive year for the 2022 12th-overall selection, and one that sets him up well to break into the NHL full-time this season. Mateychuk will boast clear top-four upside when he lands with the Blue Jackets, after averaging 18 minutes of ice time last season. He should be a strong option to play behind top defender Zach Werenski, and next to shutdown defender Ivan Provorov.
Columbus’ remaining injuries will help shape the minor-league roster to start the year. Sillinger held a prominent role in the AHL and seems near the top of Columbus’ call-up sheet entering the new year, though he’ll need to fully recover from a late-season injury before he can prove his NHL worthiness. Marrelli and Dumais have each signed their entry-level contracts, though only Marrelli will be eligible to return to the CHL. That will be his likeliest outcome, while Dumais will look to fully stride into the pro ranks after netting 11 points in 21 AHL games last season. Dumais should sit atop the AHL lineup next season, while McCue – another first-year pro who recorded eight points and 122 penalty minutes in 46 AHL games last season – will sit near the bottom of the lineup.
NHL Announces 2024-25 All-Rookie Team
Considering the votes for the 2024-25 Calder Memorial Trophy, there weren’t many surprises on this year’s All-Rookie Team, which the NHL announced this morning. There were three unanimous selections, while the other three winners had a closer vote margin. The team is as follows:
G Dustin Wolf (Flames) – Wolf finished second in Calder Trophy voting after a superb rookie campaign. The 24-year-old netminder finished the year with a 29-16-8 record in 53 starts with a .910 SV% and 2.64 GAA. Furthermore, Wolf finished with 15.1 Goals Saved Above Average according to Hockey Reference, and nearly backstopped the Calgary Flames to the postseason despite expectations of a rebuilding year.
D Lane Hutson (Canadiens) – Joining Wolf as another unanimous selection to the 2024-25 All-Rookie Team, Hutson was this year’s Calder Trophy winner. Scoring six goals and 66 points in 82 games while averaging 22:44 of ice time per game, Hutson joined Bobby Orr, Brian Leetch, and Quinn Hughes as the only defensemen to lead rookies in scoring during their respective inaugural campaigns.
D Denton Mateychuk (Blue Jackets) – Although he didn’t share similar point production to Hutson, Mateychuk had a quietly productive campaign for the Columbus Blue Jackets, scoring four goals and 13 points in 45 games, averaging 18:02 of ice time a night. Much of Mateychuk’s value came on the defensive side of the puck, securing a 91.4% on-ice save percentage at even strength despite starting 57.4% of his shifts in the defensive zone.
F Macklin Celebrini (Sharks) – As last summer’s first overall selection, expectations were high for Celebrini this season. He largely lived up to them, scoring 25 goals and 63 points in 70 games, finishing third in Calder Trophy voting. There were some significant defensive shortcomings in Celebrini’s game, but that should improve as he matures and has better teammates around him. He outscored last year’s Calder Trophy winner, Connor Bedard, by two points in two more games played.
F Cutter Gauthier (Ducks) – Gauthier finished with the fewest vote totals for an All-Rookie nod with 79 out of a potential 187. Still, it was enough to earn third place among forwards. Despite being streaky, Gauthier finished fifth in scoring on the Ducks with 20 goals and 44 points in 82 games. Gauthier’s offensive output should improve with increased ice time during the 2025-26 season, as he finished his rookie campaign averaging slightly above 14 minutes a night.
F Matvei Michkov (Flyers) – Although he wasn’t a unanimous selection like Wolf, Hutson, or Celebrini, Michkov finished one vote shy of those honors. He came exactly as advertised for the Philadelphia Flyers, scoring 26 goals and 63 points in 80 games, leading the team in goal-scoring and finishing second in total output. Like Celebrini, there were significant defensive shortcomings in Michkov’s game throughout the regular season, but those won’t be as important an issue for a winger.
Blue Jackets Notes: Jenner, Mateychuk, Sillinger, Monahan
Blue Jackets center Boone Jenner took to the ice today as he continues to work his way back from a shoulder injury sustained back in training camp, relays Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers (Twitter link). It’s the first time the captain has skated with the team since suffering the injury. Jenner has been a key middleman for Columbus for more than a decade when healthy although he has missed time with injuries for five straight years now. Considering he’s just starting to skate with the team now, it’s fair to suggest Jenner is still several weeks away from returning but with the Blue Jackets hanging around the playoff battle in the East, it’s possible that their big trade deadline addition to boost their roster could simply be getting him back in their lineup.

The 20-year-old had missed three straight games due to illness. Mateychuk has played in 12 games since being recalled late last month and has held his own in his first taste of NHL action with three points along with 21 blocked shots while averaging a little over 18 minutes a night of playing time. Mateychuk had gotten off to quite a strong start before that in the minors, collecting 25 points in 27 contests with Cleveland before being brought up.
- While they’re getting Mateychuk back, the same can’t be said for center Cole Sillinger. Team reporter Jeff Svoboda mentions (Twitter link) that the 21-year-old didn’t take the morning skate and thus is expected to miss his third straight game with an upper-body injury. Sillinger had a solid first half with 23 points in 45 games while seeing his playing time jump up to 17:40 per night.
- Compounding Jenner’s absence is that Sean Monahan (wrist) has also been out of the lineup for the past three weeks, weakening their already relatively thin center depth. Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch mentions that while Jenner is hoping to be back after the 4 Nations Face-Off, Monahan is expected to be back before him so Columbus may not have to deal with being down their top two centers for too much longer.
Blue Jackets Recall Denton Mateychuk For NHL Debut
The Blue Jackets are recalling top defense prospect Denton Mateychuk from AHL Cleveland, reports Aaron Portzline of The Athletic. He’ll be making his major league debut as soon as he gets into a game, which could be as soon as tomorrow against the Canadiens. The team later announced that forward James Malatesta was returned to Cleveland in a corresponding transaction, while Justin Danforth also landed on injured reserve. Additionally, goaltender Jet Greaves was added on an emergency recall and will be available tomorrow against Montreal.
As Portzline notes, it’s unclear if Mateychuk’s recall is in response to an injury to star blue-liner Zach Werenski. He sustained an apparent knee injury early in the third period of yesterday’s overtime loss to the Flyers after getting tangled up with Philadelphia winger Owen Tippett but only missed a couple of shifts before returning. Head coach Dean Evason confirmed postgame that Werenski wasn’t 100%, though, calling his status for tomorrow “hopeful” (via Brian Hedger of The Columbus Dispatch).
Mateychuk, 20, is now undoubtedly the highest-caliber defense prospect in the Blue Jackets organization after they traded David Jiříček to the Wild last month. McKeen’s Hockey ranked him as the second-best prospect in the system behind center Cayden Lindstrom at the beginning of the season, while Scott Wheeler of The Athletic listed him as the No. 35 prospect in the league over the summer. Columbus selected him 12th overall in 2022 after taking Jiříček sixth, and he responded with eight goals, 57 assists and 65 points in 63 games while captaining the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League in his post-draft year.
The Winnipeg native improved further in 2023-24, posting 75 points and a +35 rating in 52 games with Moose Jaw while winning the Bill Hunter Trophy as the WHL’s top defenseman. He added 11 goals and 30 points in 20 playoff games as the Warriors captured their first-ever WHL championship, and he was crowned playoff MVP after leading the postseason in assists with 19. He headed to AHL Cleveland for his first taste of professional hockey after his Memorial Cup run with Moose Jaw was over, posting three assists in four postseason contests.
That showing had Mateychuk in contention to land a spot on the Blue Jackets’ opening night roster, but a logjam of names ahead of him meant he was one of the final cuts from their training camp. He took the demotion in stride and then some, racking up nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points through his first 27 regular-season games with Cleveland. That’s good enough for the league lead in scoring among defensemen – obviously a major accomplishment for a rookie.
A left-shot defenseman, Mateychuk checks in at 5’11” and 192 lbs. He’s in the first season of his entry-level contract, which was signed in 2022 but slid twice due to a lack of NHL service team. He’ll be eligible to test restricted free agency in 2027.
Malatesta, 21, was recalled last Wednesday amid a lower-body injury to Danforth, who hasn’t played since Dec. 10. The 2021 fifth-round pick played in the Jackets’ last two games, posting a -1 rating and averaging 10:34 per game while failing to register a shot on goal. The Montreal native is producing 0.48 points per game through 25 appearances with Cleveland this season, up from last year’s 0.39 mark.
Since Danforth has missed more than seven days with his lower-body injury, he’ll be eligible to come off IR at any time. The Sacred Heart product has three goals and five assists for eight points in 25 games this season and is averaging a career-high 15:20 per night.
Greaves’ recall coming under emergency conditions suggests either Elvis Merzļikins or Daniil Tarasov will be unavailable to dress for tomorrow’s game. Tarasov has been healthy by all accounts but hasn’t appeared in a game since Dec. 5, when he surrendered six goals on 36 shots to the Oilers. The 25-year-old is in danger of losing the No. 2 spot on Columbus’ goaltending depth chart to Greaves after logging a poor .857 SV% and 4.26 GAA through nine starts. The 23-year-old Greaves, meanwhile, has a .896 mark through three games.
