Connor Ingram Wins 2024 Masterton Trophy

On Tuesday, the NHL revealed the winner of the Mark Messier Leadership Award.  Today, they announced that goaltender Connor Ingram is the recipient of the 2024 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

The 27-year-old was mired in the minors early on in his career before stepping aside in 2021 to treat a previously undiagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder and lingering depression, entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.  He returned for the 2021-22 season, making his NHL debut with Nashville while putting up strong numbers with AHL Milwaukee.

That performance was enough for Arizona to put in a claim for him on waivers in 2022-23, a move that worked out well for both sides.  After a slow start, Ingram played to a respectable .907 SV% on a rebuilding team while posting a 3.37 GAA.  That was enough for the Coyotes to give him a three-year, $5.85MM contract last summer.  He rewarded them by maintaining that same save percentage while shaving 45 points off his GAA while playing in a career-best 50 games, positioning himself as the starter heading into their first season in Utah.

Other finalists for the award were Carolina goaltender Frederik Andersen and Calgary defenseman Oliver Kylington.  Andersen returned after missing most of the season due to blood clots while Kylington was away from the team for more than a year and a half for mental health reasons before returning this season.

The NHL will now take a bit of time off from announcing its award winners.  Next up on the schedule will be Saturday when the Selke Trophy winner will be revealed.

NHL Announces 2024 Bill Masterton Trophy Finalists

The NHL has announced the three finalists for the 2023-24 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The award is given to “the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” The nominees are goaltenders Frederik Andersen of the Carolina Hurricanes, Connor Ingram of the Arizona Coyotes, and defenseman Oliver Kylington of the Calgary Flames.

Andersen started the season well with a 4-1 record in his first five games. However, he was diagnosed with a blood clotting issue early in the year and missed four months of action that ended up totaling 49 games. He returned to the Hurricanes crease late in the season and finished the year off on an elite level, posting a 1.30 GAA and a .951 SV% as he went 9-1-0 down the stretch. He’s continued his solid play in the postseason, going 4-1 with a .912 SV% and a 2.25 GAA as Carolina dispatched the Islanders in five games in the first round.

Ingram was close to retiring in 2021 but received assistance through the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program to deal with lingering mental health issues, which he said earlier this year was undiagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder. Blossoming into a true starter this season with the Coyotes, he registered a .907 SV%, a 2.91 GAA and a 23-21-3 record. He also tied for the league lead with six shutouts and played in a career-high 50 games.

Kylington spent a year and a half out of the NHL and made his return at the midway point of the 2023-24 season. He was also away from the game for mental health reasons, staying on personal leave for the entire 2022-23 season and working with support staff during his time away from the Flames. The 26-year-old re-established himself as a regular upon his return, averaging 17:15 in ice time per game with three goals and five assists.

The NHL has yet to announce an official date and place for the NHL awards show.

The Bill Masterton Trophy is awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. Nominees are selected by members of the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association, with finalists being named near the end of the regular season. Previous winners include Kris Letang (2023), Carey Price (2022), and Oskar Lindblom (2021).  Today, a new list of 32 nominees has been named.

Morning Notes: Zucker, Dumba, Villalta, Hellberg

The Arizona Coyotes are open to trading veteran forward Jason Zucker and defenseman Matt Dumba, The Fourth Period reports. Both players are on expiring contracts and could be cheap options for added depth. Zucker has scored eight goals and 22 points in 46 games this season, while Dumba has managed just nine points in 52 games of his own.

This update doesn’t come as much of a surprise, although it does deviate from reports earlier in the season that shared the Coyotes were focused on adding older, veteran presences. But the Coyotes’ season has fallen to shambles since the calendar turned over, with the team currently riding an 11-game losing streak and sporting a 4-15-2 record in 2024. It’s been a heavy fall for a team that carried a winning record through early December. But with the losses has come a return to form for Arizona, who are once again focused on selling veteran talents to bolster their future capital. Arizona has two available salary retention spots open and may need to use them to make any trade of Zucker, who carries a $5.3MM cap hit, or Dumba, who has a $3.9MM cap hit, work for cap-strapped teams. Even then, the return for either player – one now 32 and the other struggling to produce – likely wouldn’t be too profitable for the Coyotes.

Other notes from around the league:

  • The Coyotes have sent down goaltender Matthew Villalta, suggesting that Connor Ingram could be nearing a return from an undisclosed injury that’s held him out for the last week. Villalta played in his first two NHL games while filling in for Ingram, saving 24 of the 29 shots he faced in 72 minutes of ice time. He’s primarily operated as the starting goalie for the AHL’s Tuscon Roadrunners, where he’s managed 22 wins and a .913 save percentage in 34 games.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-assigned goaltender Magnus Hellberg to their AHL affiliate the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins just three days after recalling him. It appears the Penguins made the move as a precaution in case one of their NHL netminders were unable to play. The 32-year-old did see NHL action earlier in the year, dressing in three games for the Penguins in which he went 1-0-0 with a 2.50 goals against average and a .922 save percentage.

Coyotes Recall Matt Villalta, Place Liam O’Brien On IR

The Coyotes recalled netminder Matt Villalta from AHL Tucson on Friday, per a team announcement. Forward Liam O’Brien was moved to injured reserve to create a roster spot.

Villalta, 24, gets his first recall as a member of the Coyotes with starter Connor Ingram sidelined day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Ingram left Wednesday’s game against the Wild after the second period and did not return.

Karel Vejmelka will get the majority of the action while Ingram is out of the lineup. Originally expected to form a tandem with Ingram this year, he’s fallen squarely into the backup position after posting a .897 SV% and 6-12-2 record through 19 starts and four relief appearances.

Villalta is in his first season with the Coyotes after not receiving a qualifying offer from the Kings last summer. He’s suiting up in his fifth season of pro hockey after the Kings selected him 72nd overall in the 2017 draft.

The Kingston, Ontario, native was on an upward trajectory throughout his four seasons for the Kings’ affiliate in Ontario, so it was puzzling to see Los Angeles cut him loose. Villalta has assumed the undisputed starting role in Tucson, logging a .913 SV%, two shutouts, and a 22-11-1 record in 34 games. He leads the league in wins and games played, while his SV% ranks 18th.

He’s a high-end third-string goalie at this stage in his development, and a potential NHL debut with Ingram out of the lineup could go a long way toward demonstrating he has value as an NHL backup as soon as next season. Ingram’s shoes are giant ones to fill, however – he’s been one of the best stories in the NHL this season with a .912 SV% and 17-13-2 record in 35 games, along with 10.8 goals saved above expected, per MoneyPuck.

O’Brien, 29, was already listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury. He last suited up on Feb. 10 against the Predators and will be eligible to return to action for Sunday’s game against the Avalanche, although Arizona will need to clear a roster spot to take him off IR. The team’s primary enforcer has 116 PIMs in 49 games this year, adding three goals and eight points.

Arizona Coyotes Extend Connor Ingram

June 25th: The Coyotes have officially announced the deal. In regards to the signing, General Manager in Arizona, Bill Armstrong, said, “Connor is a good young goaltender who played well for us last season. He and Karel Vejmelka provided us with a strong goaltending tandem. We look forward to having him back between the pipes.”

June 24th: Set to hit restricted free agency this summer, the Arizona Coyotes have done a bit of work to give them some clarity in net, signing Connor Ingram to a three-year extension. The deal will be a three-year, $5.85MM contract extension, paying Ingram a total of $1.95MM each season in the NHL.

Most importantly with Ingram’s deal, it actually buys out two years of potential unrestricted free agency for the netminder. Already having Karel Vejmelka signed until the 2024-25 season, the Coyotes will likely roll with these two for next year at the very least. Ideally, Arizona would like goaltending prospect Ivan Prosvetov to make the full-time leap to the NHL but must have felt that the young goaltender still needed a bit more seasoning at the minor-league level.

Originally drafted in the third round of the 2016 draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Ingram never managed to make the jump to the NHL in southwest Florida. He was traded to the Nashville Predators during the 2018-19 season, spending much of his time with the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL. Last season, he finally managed to make the jump to the professional league in Nashville, posting a 1-2-0 record in three games, achieving a .879 SV% and a 3.71 GAA.

Before the start of this past season, Ingram was waived by Nashville, being claimed by the Coyotes. Now playing in the net for a statistically worse team, Ingram had the benefit of having much more access to ice time than he previously had. In 27 games for the Coyotes, Ingram went 6-13-8, earning a .907 SV% and a 3.37 GAA, much better numbers than his cup of coffee with the Predators a year prior.

It is most likely that Vejmelka will once again be the starting goaltender in Arizona at the beginning of next season, but Ingram does give the team a reliable backup option. There is absolutely no indication that the Coyotes are planning for contention next year, so Ingram can take this time to boost his stock for his next round of free agency in three years.

Arizona Coyotes Return Ivan Prosvetov To AHL

Jan 9: Prosvetov has been returned to the minor leagues, suggesting Ingram will be ready to return for tomorrow’s game.

Jan 8: The Arizona Coyotes announced this afternoon that goaltender Ivan Prosvetov has been recalled from the Tucson Roadrunners. No corresponding move has been made, however the team did add that fellow netminder Connor Ingram is out tonight due to an undisclosed illness. Prosvetov will likely be the backup tonight when the Coyotes host the Pittsburgh Penguins, PHNX Sports Craig Morgan tweeting Karel Vejmelka will get the start.

Prosvetov, 23, was a fourth-round pick of the Coyotes back in 2018 and has spent time in the NHL, AHL, ECHL, and OHL since being drafted. The Russian netminder made his NHL debut back in 2020-21, getting into three games and added another three NHL games last season. This year, Prosvetov has played the entire year with Tucson, getting into 19 games, recording an .899 save-percentage and 3.20 goals-against average.

Ingram, 25, has spent this season as the backup in Arizona after being claimed on waivers just prior to opening night. Once a third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning, the goaltender bounced around between the AHL and ECHL, even appearing over in Sweden during the 2020-21 season before making his NHL debut last year as a member of the Nashville Predators. A fantastic 2021-22 in the AHL with the Norfolk Admirals seemed to earn Ingram a legitimate NHL look, however he has struggled to start this season with a 3.92 goals-against and .886 save-percentage through 11 games.

Coyotes Claim Connor Ingram

For the second time this preseason, the Coyotes have added to their goaltending depth as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports (Twitter link) that they’ve claimed Connor Ingram off waivers from Nashville.

The 25-year-old saw his first NHL action last season, getting into three games during the regular season with the Predators, posting a 3.71 GAA along with a .879 SV%.  However, after David Rittich struggled in the opening game of the playoffs (with Juuse Saros out of the lineup), Nashville turned to Ingram for the rest of their series against Colorado and he held his own with a .913 SV% in the three games he suited up in.

Ingram has a much better track record of success in the minors which is likely what prompted the Coyotes to put in a claim.  He has a save percentage of .919 over parts of six seasons in the AHL, spanning 149 games.  He’s in the final season of a three-year minimum contract that carries a $733K AAV so he’s certainly a low-cost option for them to try.

Karel Vejmelka is set to enter the season as the starter while Ingram will be battling fellow waiver claim Jonas Johansson for the second-string role.  Meanwhile, Jon Gillies, who entered camp as the potential backup, cleared waivers today and will be on his way to Tucson of the AHL.

Avalanche, Predators Send Several Players To AHL

Now that they have been eliminated from the playoffs, the 2021-22 season is over for most of the Nashville Predators. Not so for at least three, as Cody Glass, Connor Ingram, and Mathieu Olivier have all been reassigned to the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals to join their Calder Cup run.

Ingram, 25, ended up starting the Predators final three games, despite having just three NHL appearances heading into the playoffs. The young netminder held his own, recording a .913 save percentage and coming oh-so-close to stealing a win from the Colorado Avalanche in game two. Ingram made 49 stops in that overtime loss, easily the highest of his short NHL career to this point. Signed to a one-way contract for next season, he is a candidate to serve as the team’s full-time backup after the strong performance.

Glass, 23, came up at the end of the season and played in two of the four playoff games for Nashville, averaging fewer than ten minutes of ice time and failing to record a point. It was a difficult year for the top prospect, who was forced down to the minor leagues for most of the year after a trade from the Vegas Golden Knights. Instead of complaining though, Glass became a star for the Admirals, scoring 62 points in 66 games to lead the club. With a restricted free agency negotiation upcoming, a good showing in the AHL playoffs would certainly help.

Olivier, 25, played in three of the four playoff games for the Predators, also recording zero points but racking up 12 penalty minutes. The undrafted forward doesn’t do much scoring but can bring a level of physicality to the Admirals series. In 46 games for them this year, he had 11 points and 76 penalty minutes.

Meanwhile, the Avalanche have sent their own reinforcements down as they await the results of the other series. Justus Annunen and Hunter Miska have both been returned to the Colorado Eagles, who start a series against the Ontario Reign tomorrow night. Neither goaltender was ever really expected to play for Colorado, though Darcy Kuemper’s eye injury certainly made it a possibility.

West Notes: Saros, Canucks Scouts, Kuzmenko

While it was previously reported that there was some hope that injured Nashville Predators starting goaltender Juuse Saros would be able to play after the first two games of his team’s first-round series against the Colorado Avalanche, it seems that timeline may have been a bit optimistic. Today, Predators coach John Hynes announced that Saros would not be playing in game three and that rookie Connor Ingram will retain the starter’s crease. After a brutal overtime loss last night, the Predators have a crucial home contest on Saturday as they try to fight their way back into the series.

While this news is undoubtedly unfortunate for the Predators given their increasingly dire situation and Saros’ brilliance this year, there is one wrinkle to this storyline that could prove to be a positive for Nashville: the emergence of Ingram. The rookie started game 2 after season-long backup David Rittich’s game one implosion, and performed admirably. Ingram made some spectacular saves and finished with 49 saves on 51 shots, nearly carrying the Predators to a miracle road victory. If Saros’ injury is what puts Ingram into the spotlight and he raises his stock leaguewide considerably, perhaps that can be some consolation to the Predators faithful.

Now, for some other notes from across the league:

  • It has been a season of much change for the Vancouver Canucks, and today there was some shuffling in their scouting department. Thomas Drance of The Athletic reported that the Canucks have parted ways with four members of their amateur scouting department: Derek Richard, Tim Lenardon, Brandon Benning, and Pat Conacher. The Vancouver Sun’s Patrick Johnston added a fifth name to the departures, reporting that Ted Hempson is also leaving the organization.  That’s a decent number of scouts to leave at one time, and this development supports the idea that this new Canucks front office is seeking deep, substantive changes to the organization.
  • The courting process has begun with highly-touted KHL free agent Andrei Kuzmenko, and the landscape regarding his suitors is starting to take shape. The Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson reported that Oilers GM Ken Holland “may have talked to [Kuzmenko] personally” and that the team is interested in the point-per-game KHL scorer. In addition to the Oilers, CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal reports that the Canucks interviewed Kuzmenko today, and that “there is good interest from both sides.” It was previously reported that as many as 20 teams could be actively interested in signing Kuzmenko, so it’s likely that reports like these concerning his recruitment process will continue to trickle in as the competition to secure his services heats up.
