Minor Transactions: 03/02/18

As always, we’ll keep track of all the moves teams make between their NHL and minor league clubs right here. Check back throughout the day to see if your favorite team has made a transaction.

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Dominik Simon from the AHL, bringing him back up after just a few days in the minor leagues. Simon was sent down on trade deadline day in order to be eligible for the AHL playoffs, but hadn’t played a game with the club as they were off all week. Instead, Simon will return to the NHL where he has 11 points in 28 games this season.
  • Ty Rattie has been returned to the AHL by the Edmonton Oilers, after a call-up last week. Rattie is one of the Oilers four post-deadline recalls after he was “papered” on Monday to be eligible for the AHL playoffs. He can move up and down the rest of the year, unless his waiver clock is reset by spending enough time in the NHL. Rattie originally cleared back in September, and spent almost the entire season in the minor leagues.

Injury Notes: Penguins, Blue Jackets, Bruins

The Pittsburgh Penguins could be without rookie forward Zach Aston-Reese long-term. Actually, head coach Mike Sullivan described the injury as “longer-term”, though he refrained from putting any specific timeline on his return. He did say that Aston-Reese suffered an upper-body injury in practice, which is why he missed last night’s game, a 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils, and will presumably miss many more. While the Penguins made a splash with their acquisition of center Derick Brassard at the trade deadline, Aston-Reese has been a point-per-game player since being recalled to Pittsburgh, spending ample time beside Sidney Crosby. Fortunately for the two-time defending Cup champs, they are also deep at wing and should have no trouble making up for the loss of Aston-Reese in their top-nine.

  • While the Penguins lose a man to injury, the rival Blue Jackets add one. Columbus announced today that captain Nick Foligno has been activated from injured reserve. Foligno missed more than a week with a lower body injury suffered against the Penguins back on the 18th. However, he’s returning to the lineup sooner than expected. The Blue Jackets are thankful for Foligno’s quick bounce back; not only are they looking to solidify their playoff position, but they also lost forward Josh Anderson to long-term injury recently. Fortunately, Foligno’s return and the additions of Thomas Vanek and Mark Letestu at the trade deadline make for a timely situation to replace Anderson.
  • Speaking of trade deadline injury replacements, the Bruins could not be happier with how their additions played in the absence of Patrice Bergeron last night. When a player of Bergeron’s caliber goes down, the team always suffers. Bergeron will be out at least two weeks with a fractured foot and it showed right away last night on the defensive side of the match-up, as Boston surrendered three easy first period goals to the Carolina Hurricanes. However, it was Rick Nash and Tommy Wingels leading the charge to a comeback victory. The pair of new Bruins combined for two goals and an assist in 32 minutes of ice time as Boston won 4-3.

Wild Had Very High Asking Price From Penguins For Matt Cullen, Teams Were Calling About Daniel Sprong

  • The Penguins made a strong push to acquire Wild center Matt Cullen, notes Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. However, Minnesota set a considerable asking price, one that GM Jim Rutherford wasn’t willing to pay for a player who would have been more of a luxury instead of filling a need.  Mackey adds that Pittsburgh had also set a very high asking price on top prospect Daniel Sprong, who could see time with the Pens down the stretch.

Minor Transactions: 02/17/18

Though teams made several transactions yesterday to make their younger players eligible for the AHL playoffs, the rest of the season will still be filled with call-ups to help out the NHL team. Remember, after the trade deadline that though rosters have no limits in terms of total players, teams are allowed only four non-emergency recalls.

  • The Washington Capitals have recalled Travis Boyd, who had been playing with the Hershey Bears of the AHL. For the third consecutive season, Boyd is among the scoring leaders for Hershey with 44 points in 56 games. While it’s unclear if he’s scheduled to enter the Capitals lineup right away, he can definitely give them some offensive punch if inserted down the stretch.
  • Cory Schneider was assigned to the Binghamton Devils on a conditioning stint today, but is expected to be brought back on Wednesday to rejoin New Jersey on their current road trip. While that doesn’t guarantee he’ll be back in the crease right away, it is a good sign that he’s approaching his return to the lineup.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Tristan Jarry on an emergency loan after announcing that Matt Murray has been diagnosed with a concussion. Jarry had been sent down to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, but will now have to help Casey DeSmith with the NHL duties. DeSmith is expected to start tonight for the Penguins, but Jarry has more experience in the starting role and could be asked to take over while Murray is out.
  • The Calgary Flames announced that they have sent Andrew Mangiapane to the AHL, but the move was actually completed yesterday to make sure he was eligible for the minor league playoffs. With the addition of Chris Stewart off waivers, Mangiapane was likely looking at some healthy scratches and now can help the Stockton Heat instead.
  • The Buffalo Sabres have recalled Seth Griffith from the AHL, spending one of their recalls to bring up the 25-year old forward. Griffith has played 76 NHL games over his career and is a point-per-game player at the minor league level. The undersized forward has excellent creativity and playmaking ability, but hasn’t ever been given an extended chance in a team’s top-6.
  • As expected, the Minnesota Wild have brought Luke Kunin back up from the minor leagues. The Wild are extremely close to the cap, and needed to move out some salary at the deadline in order to bring Kunin up for the stretch run while keeping enough room to sign Jordan Greenway. Kunin has just 19 points for the Iowa Wild this season, but is a hard working two-way center that could jump right into the lineup for the Wild.
  • Ethan Bear will be one of the Edmonton Oilers’ four call-ups for the remainder of the season, and will get a chance to show what he can do after an outstanding junior career. Bear was a 70-point defenseman in his final season with the Seattle Thunderbirds, and was a huge part of their qualifying for the Memorial Cup in 2017. The undersized but super-skilled Bear has 16 points in his first professional season for the Bakersfield Condors.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have returned winger Kalle Kossila and goalie Reto Berra to San Diego of the AHL, notes Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register.  Berra’s demotion was expected with John Gibson likely to return to the lineup on Friday. As for Kossila, he didn’t get into any games after being recalled back on the 24th; he has a goal and an assist in ten contests with Anaheim from earlier this season.

Matt Murray Diagnosed With Concussion

After taking a puck to the head in practice yesterday, Matt Murray has been diagnosed with a concussion. The Pittsburgh Penguins will have to go with Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith for the time being, starting tonight when they welcome the New Jersey Devils to town.

This is terrible timing for the Penguins as they fight to stay in the top three spots in the Metropolitan Division. The Philadelphia Flyers, on another one of their extended winning streaks, have claimed the very top spot ahead of the Washington Capitals while the Devils are nipping at the Penguins’ heels. With just 19 games left, the idea of having Murray sit out for any length of time could be devastating to their playoff seeding.

In the meantime, Jarry will likely be asked to carry much of the load as he did earlier in the year when Murray was injured. The 22-year old rookie has a .916 save percentage on the season through 20 appearances, and could even be asked to step into a playoff start should Murray’s injury history flare up again in the postseason. While the Penguins feel confident in his and DeSmith’s play, it’s tough to rely solely on rookie goaltenders at this late stage of the season.

Murray has not had a season to remember in his first chance as the unquestioned starter. After Marc-Andre Fleury departed to Vegas in the offseason, Murray has only been able to start 37 games and is carrying easily the worst save percentage of his career at .909. There’s no telling how a concussion will affect him down the stretch, but the Penguins will hope he can get back for the playoffs where he has a .928 save percentage—and two Stanley Cups—through his first two seasons in the league.

Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Patric Hornqvist To Five-Year Extension

Tuesday: The deal is official, Hornqvist will be under contract through the 2022-23 season.

Monday: While meeting with media to discuss his team’s trade deadline, Pittsburgh Penguins’ GM Jim Rutherford revealed another detail that will make a lot of fans happy. The team is closing in on a contract extension with pending unrestricted free agent Patric Hornqvist. He believes the deal will be finalized tomorrow. According to several reports including Bob McKenzie of TSN, the deal is expected to be for five years, with an average annual value of $5.3MM.

Hornqvist has been a major contributor to the Penguins success over the last few years, since coming over from the Nashville Predators for James Neal back in 2014. Although he is 31, Hornqvist has cracked 50 points in three of his last four seasons and shows no signs of slowing down. A dominant net front presence who has shown great chemistry with Pittsburgh’s superstar forwards, Hornqvist’s extension may look excessive to some, but is a good fit for Pittsburgh for now.

Hornqvist in having a bit of a down season, but he has always shown up in a major way for the Penguins come postseason time. The security of a new deal may be exactly what Hornqvist’s needs to get back on track down the stretch and ready to help Pittsburgh battle for a third straight Stanley Cup title.

Josh Jooris Traded To Pittsburgh Penguins

Even though the deadline has technically passed, trades will still leak out over the next hour. Josh Jooris has been acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins from the Carolina Hurricanes, the Penguins announced. Heading to the Hurricanes is AHL center Greg McKegg and Jooris has been assigned to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins to replace him.

An undrafted forward out of Union College, Jooris has carved out a role in the NHL for the last several years as a high-energy fourth line player. With 55 points in 204 career games, he won’t be relied upon for anything more than his usual role, but does give the team some NHL experience in the minor leagues in case injury strikes down the stretch.

McKegg was given a chance as the fourth-line center earlier in the year with Pittsburgh, but was pushed down the depth chart after they acquired Riley Sheahan. Now after adding Derick Brassard as well, his chances of making an impact with the club down the stretch were very slim. He’s off to the fifth organization of his short career, after being originally selected in the third round by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2010.

Brassard Acquisition Won't Affect Efforts To Re-Sign Hornqvist, Pens Remain Interested In Matt Cullen

  • Although the Penguins have committed more money on their payroll for next season with the acquisition of Derick Brassard earlier this week, GM Jim Rutherford told Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the trade will not impact their attempts to sign winger Patric Hornqvist to a contract extension. Mackey speculates that the 31-year-old could land $6MM on his next deal and Pittsburgh already has more than $64MM tied up in 15 players for next season, per CapFriendly.  Even with a projected bump in the salary cap, that doesn’t leave much wiggle room to work with.
  • Still with the Penguins, they are still showing interest in Wild center Matt Cullen, reports Josh Yohe of The Athletic (subscription required). Where he would fit in isn’t as obvious now with Brassard’s addition but Pittsburgh is certainly familiar with him with the 41-year-old having played there the last two seasons.  On the surface, Riley Sheahan could potentially shift to the wing to make room.  However, the Wild have yet to indicate that Cullen is available and instead, plan to use the savings from losing Chris Stewart to waivers (or from sending him to the minors if he clears) to free up some salary cap flexibility.

With the trade deadline coming to a fast-moving finish tomorrow, plenty of teams will need to make adjustments to their roster today. Check in to see what teams are up to:

  • The Minnesota Wild have recalled two players to the team in forward Joel Eriksson-Ek and defenseman Nick Seeler from the Iowa Wild. For Eriksson-Ek, the move is just a way to save some salary cap space. For Seeler, he returns after almost two weeks after being sent back to the Iowa Wild. The 24-year-old defenseman has played six games for Minnesota, while playing most of the season with Iowa where he’s played 49 games.
  • The New Jersey Devils have assigned center John Quenneville to the Binghampton Devils of the AHL. He had been sidelined since Feb. 10 with a knee injury. The former 2014 first-rounder has played in just two games for New Jersey. In Binghampton, he has 10 goals and 11 assists in 31 games this season.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have assigned recently acquired forward Vincent Dunn to his team in the ECHL, the Brampton Beast Sunday. Dunn, who the team got from the Ottawa Senators in the Derrick Brassard trade Friday, started the year with the Belleville Senators in the AHL, but got demoted to the Beast. The Penguins will keep the 22-year-old with his former team, rather than sending him to one of their affiliates. Dunn has seven goals and an assist in 17 games for Brampton, but tallied just four assists in 16 games with Belleville.
