Elliotte Friedman commented today on the Sunday column from Larry Brooks of the New York Post. In the column, Brooks writes that the Rangers players have quit on just about everyone, including their head coach Peter Laviolette. As Friedman points out, the Rangers collapse has been historic after the team won the President’s Trophy and went to the Eastern Conference Finals just last season. In his column, Brooks writes that the Rangers collapse will eventually result in Laviolette losing his job, and another loss tonight to Florida certainly won’t help things.

Friedman comments that Brooks is incredibly plugged into the Rangers organization and feels that this column carries a ton of weight. He adds that Laviolette knows that hockey is results-driven, and with the Rangers losing 15 of their last 19 games, the results have been very poor.

The Rangers haven’t been shy about making hard choices in recent years, leveraging waivers as a means of sidestepping no-trade clauses, and moving on from long-time veterans. The Rangers just underwent a dramatic rebuild prior to the pandemic, and now, at a time when they should be competing for the Stanley Cup, they are amid their season unravelling. It is anyone’s guess as to what the Rangers will do next and there could be many more surprises in store in New York City.

General manager Chris Drury has already traded his captain, he’s traded a recent second overall pick, he’s called around the league and let teams know that most of their roster is available (including long-time veteran Chris Kreider). He hasn’t been shy about calling players out, or doing what he thinks is best to improve the team.

Now, with the team free-falling, Drury has some hard choices to make. He is unlikely to overhaul the roster into a contender this season, and given that the Rangers just exited a rebuild, it’s unlikely that the franchise has the appetite to endure another one. But, with each passing day, some sort of action will need to occur, and it seems likely (at least according to Brooks) that it will start with Laviolette.

Jets Recall Dominic Toninato, Haydn Fleury To IR

The Winnipeg Jets have recalled forward Dominic Toninato from the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League and also placed defenseman Haydn Fleury on the injured reserve. A move was expected at some point before the Jets head out to Colorado to take on the Avalanche tomorrow night. Mason Appleton did not take to the ice for warm-up tonight against Nashville which led to the speculation that the Jets would bring someone up for insurance.

Toninato is the captain of the Moose and is receiving his first NHL recall of the season. The 30-year-old has dressed in 25 games this year for Manitoba, registering six goals and five assists. Last year, Toninato spent 15 NHL games with Winnipeg, tallying a goal and four assists.

The Jets placed Fleury on IR retroactive to December 23rd. The 28-year-old is dealing with a lower-body injury that he suffered a week ago against Toronto. Fleury has been a regular for much of this season, dressing in 25 games and posting six assists. The former seventh-overall pick has bounced around to four different franchises in the past five seasons but was settling in with the Jets, playing some of his best hockey at the NHL level despite the unfavorable deployment.

Logan Stanley took Fleury’s spot in the lineup the past two games, playing almost 20 minutes on Saturday night against Ottawa.

Golden Knights Recall Jonas Røndbjerg, Assign Tanner Laczynski

The Vegas Golden Knights have recalled forward Jonas Røndbjerg from the Henderson Silver Knights. In a corresponding move, the Golden Knights have also assigned forward Tanner Laczynski to the minor leagues. This marks Røndbjerg’s third call-up of the year. He’s spent four days on the NHL roster this season, stepping into two games on Vegas’ fourth-line.

Røndbjerg has been a go-to call-up over the last four seasons. He was originally the sixth pick in Vegas’ franchise history, hearing his name called in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft after a strong season with the Vaxjo Lakers’ U20 squad. The Denmark-native spent the next two seasons working his way up to Vaxjo’s SHL lineup. He totaled 17 points in 80 games with the club before moving to the AHL full-time in the 2020-21 season. He scored 40 points through his first 78 games, and three seasons, in the AHL – just enough to earn a routine role in the mix of Vegas’ bottom-six. Since then, Røndbjerg has established a pattern of a role-based impact in the NHL coupled with high production in the minor leagues. The 30 NHL games he received as a rookie in 2021-22 stand as his single-season high, though he has totaled 65 NHL appearances and 10 points in the three seasons since. He’ll return to the top flight once again, on the back of 10 points through 25 AHL games this season.

Meanwhile, Laczynski will head back to the minors after just 11 days on the NHL roster. The 27-year-old center stepped into five games during his recall, recording six penalty minutes and a -1 but not managing any scoring. He’s been far more productive in the minor leagues, netting 19 points in 17 games – still a team-lead in scoring, despite the Henderson Silver Knights playing 10 games without Laczynski. His return will prove significant help for a young Henderson lineup.

Jonathan Toews Explains Absence, Doesn’t Rule Out NHL Return

Jonathan Toews’ name has slowly begun slipping from hockey dialogue. He led a star-studded career with the Chicago Blackhawks from 2007 to 2023, serving as the team’s captain for 14 seasons and leading the team to three Stanley Cup wins. Toews remained a tremendous lineup piece long after Chicago started to lose their luster – but the 2020s brought a challenge with nagging injuries that the franchise centerman couldn’t overcome. He announced in December of 2020 that he’d miss the entirety of the upcoming, shortened 2020-21 season due to an undisclosed illness, later revealed to be Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS).

Toews rehabbed and returned from the illness in 2021-22, and while he returned to a productive top-line role – the illness still forced him out of 38 games between 2021-22 and 2022-23. Toews announced at the end of the 2023 summer that he would be stepping away from hockey to focus on healing. That journey took him through rounds of alternative medicine, natural healing, and even a five-week trip to India to practice Ayurveda – a traditional healing approach. Toews recently returned from the cross-world trip and opened up to GQ Magazine about what he learned, how he’s feeling, and what future may lie ahead.

Toews opened the interview by explaining that his battles with illness ran deeper than previously foretold. He shared that a lifelong battle with digestive and immune system issues hit a flare in his second season in the league – the 2008-09 season, when a 20-year-old Toews was named Chicago’s captain. He struggled to eat or sleep, and ended up working with a team of doctors to craft a diet tailored to his needs.  That helped Toews get through the next 10 seasons – where he scored 624 points in 721 games, earned three All-Star bids, and won three Stanley Cups – but he says he never once felt like his illness was fully behind him.

Then, Toews caught COVID-19. He explains that the illness perpetuated all of his issues, worsening his energy sink and ability to recover game-to-game. The story of his struggles recovering from COVID have been well documented. Toews explains that he was too caught up in recovery to discuss a contract for the 2023-24 season, leading to him taking another season off. He heard about various approaches to healing over the year, including a recommendation to visit an Indian Sadhu to practice Ayurvedic medicine. One thing led to another, and Toews ultimately decided to take up the unique approach in September of 2023. He said all the while he was driven by a saying from his mother: “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.”

Toews describes his day-to-day experience in India in-depth. Ultimately, the practices helped him regain control and confidence over his health – and Toews adds that he’s been able to continue to practice Ayurveda back in North America. That has him feeling better, and reconsidering the thought of playing in the NHL. Toews told GQ that his desire to play hasn’t left, and that there’s still a part of him that hasn’t come to terms with his career being over. He spoke optimistically, saying, “There’s never any guarantees in life, but I’m going to give it my best shot.”

Toews’ statement of hope is an encouraging sign, given his career seemed to be at its end. He faces an uphill battle working back into the NHL as a 36-year-old who hasn’t had hockey at front-of-mind since early-2023. But Toews is proudly an all-time-great, posting a career that has already gone down in the history books of an Original Six franchise. He scored 372 goals and 883 points in 1,067 career games; and managed an 81-point season as recently as 2018-19. Toews was significantly less impactful in his most recent two seasons – with just 68 points in 124 games between 2021 and 2023 – but his value as a well-rounded, middle-six centerman could still stand tall.

If Toews does near a return, his decision on where to suit up will be hotly followed. He spent the entirety of his 15-year career with the Blackhawks, who drafted him third-overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. But Toews is a native of Winnipeg, and faced plenty of trade rumors throughout the later years of his career. The Blackhawks could certainly use his help, as they’re currently sat with the fourth-fewest goals in the NHL and a menial 14-18-4 record. Toews could also be a fantastic support to young superstar Connor Bedard, who’s looking to take over Toews’ and Patrick Kane’s mantle as the team’s franchise leader. It’ll be that ability to lead teams and inspire young players that earns Toews a return, though it seems the answers to if and where he’ll return are yet to come – as the Chicago hockey legend works to reintroduce himself to the game.

Ducks Reassign Calle Clang

Dec. 30: Clang is headed back to San Diego today after backing up Dostál in yesterday’s 5-3 win over the Oilers, the team announced. Gibson should be ready to go from his illness tomorrow against the Devils.

Dec. 28: The Anaheim Ducks have recalled goaltender Calle Clang from the minor leagues. He is expected to back up Ducks starter Lukáš Dostál, with veteran John Gibson still out day-to-day with illness. The move was first reported by Zach Cavanagh of The Sporting Tribune, and seconded by NHL.com’s Kevin Kurz. In a corresponding move, Anaheim has also promoted Vyacheslav Buteyets from the ECHL to the AHL to fill Clang’s vacancy.

Clang doesn’t seem likely to make his NHL debut on this recall, but he nonetheless makes the move with an impressive resume. He’s served as the San Diego Gulls’ starting goalie this year, posting a team-leading seven wins and .896 save percentage in 19 appearances. Clang won out the starting role as a rookie last season, playing just well enough to win out starts over Tomas Suchanek and Alex Stalock – despite Suchanek posting a .910 in 29 games to Clang’s .897 in 32 games.

It was nonetheless an exciting performance that showed Clang was able of translating his strong play over from Sweden. He stood tall for Rogle BK through parts of four seasons prior to moving to the AHL, ultimately totalling a 22-15-0 record and .906 in 43 games with the pro squad. Those numbers helped Clang earn a third-round draft selection from the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2020. He stands Pittsburgh’s fourth-highest drafted goalie since 2000, though the club shipped him to Anaheim along with Zach Aston-Reese, Dominik Simon, and a second-round pick used on Tristan Luneau in their 2022 acquisition of Rickard Rakell. Two years later, Clang now stands as the top goalie on Anaheim’s call-up chart – helped along by Suchanek suffering a long-term injury before the year started. Clang will try to prove his place on this call-up – if he’s able to step into any ice time.

Hurricanes’ Shayne Gostisbehere To Miss Extended Time

Hurricanes defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere appears ticketed for a longer-term absence due to his recently sustained upper-body injury, head coach Rod Brind’Amour told reporters Monday (via Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer). The lefty missed Saturday’s win over the Devils after leaving Friday’s loss late in the third period, missing his final three shifts alongside usual defense partner Sean Walker.

It’s a tough blow for Gostisbehere, who’s tracking at 0.77 points per game through 35 contests – the second-highest such rate of his career. He’s quarterbacked the team’s top power-play unit with Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, Martin Nečas, and Andrei Svechnikov, all the while ranking third on the team in scoring with 27 points and ranking second in the NHL among defenders with 18 power-play points. Needless to say, it’s been a happy marriage so far between the 31-year-old and the Hurricanes, who signed him to a three-year, $9.6MM contract over the summer.

Picked up after a 10-goal, 56-point campaign in Detroit last year, Gostisbehere doesn’t log enough even-strength usage to warrant Norris Trophy consideration but has firmly re-established himself as one of the top power-play specialists in the league. His 0.72 points per game since the beginning of 2023-24 rank 13th among defensemen with at least 40 games played. He’s also an incredibly efficient producer. Among defenders who have also averaged fewer than 20 minutes per game over that span, he ranks first in points per game, with the Kings’ Brandt Clarke coming in a distant second at 0.52.

Gostisbehere’s injury forced Ty Smith to make his season debut on Saturday, making him just the seventh different defenseman to suit up for Carolina in 2024-25. They’ve been exceptionally healthy on the blue line. Smith, who hadn’t played in the NHL since January 2023 and had 10 points in 13 games while on assignment to AHL Chicago this season, took Gostisbehere’s spot on the top power-play unit.

The length of Gostisbehere’s absence could have a small influence on the Canes’ deadline plans. Despite their high-end depth with everyone healthy, things drop off sharply on the depth chart past the No. 6 position. Rolling for a long period of time with Smith and Riley Stillman as the No. 6/7 options isn’t desirable and could convince general manager Eric Tulsky to add some more experienced bottom-pairing depth.

Wild Reassign Brendan Gaunce

The Wild reassigned veteran forward Brendan Gaunce to AHL Iowa today, per a team announcement. He’s been on the roster for most of the past couple of weeks as a depth option up front, but after serving as a healthy scratch Sunday night in Joel Eriksson Ek’s return to the lineup, he’s once again a minor-leaguer.

Gaunce appeared in four games while up in Minny, all of which came with fourth-line usage. He never logged more than 11 minutes of ice time in a game and averaged 9:59 across the quartet of games. The 30-year-old pivot went without a point and posted a -3 rating while taking a pair of minor penalties and recording three shots on goal. The Wild were also out-attempted 51-22 with the journeyman on the ice at even strength.

The appearances marked the fourth straight season in which Gaunce has seen NHL ice, although he hasn’t appeared in more than 25 games since suiting up in 30 with the Blue Jackets in 2021-22. He posted eight points in 35 games in Columbus over the past three seasons before signing in Minnesota as a free agent over the summer, instead spending most of his time in the AHL in Cleveland. As usual, the 6’3″, 214-lb two-way forward was a strong offensive producer at the minor-league level, posting 85 points in 102 games for Cleveland.

While Gaunce has consistently put up impressive totals offensively in juniors and in the minors, it’s never come close to translating to the NHL. A late first-round pick by the Canucks in 2012, Gaunce managed only 15 points in 117 games for Vancouver before they eventually non-tendered him in 2019.

The Ontario native now returns to Iowa, where he’s served as an alternate captain and has 14 points in 21 games this season, good for third on the team. He’s been on the roster for 10 days and played four games since clearing waivers during preseason, so he can be rostered for another 20 days or play six games before he needs them again to head back to the aHL.

Hurricanes Recall Riley Stillman, Place Jack Drury On IR

The Hurricanes announced that they’ve recalled defenseman Riley Stillman from AHL Chicago. The team had an open roster spot, but center Jack Drury was moved to injured reserve in a corresponding transaction.

Stillman, 26, has been sent between the NHL and AHL countless times this season. Used as a frequent healthy extra, he’s yet to see NHL ice in 2024-25 but has been rostered for seven games since returning from offseason lower-body surgery in mid-November. He was sent to the minors before the holiday break and wasn’t necessarily expected back after the Canes summoned Ty Smith over the weekend. However, after Shayne Gostisbehere missed Saturday’s win over the Devils with an upper-body injury, they were down to six healthy defensemen on the active roster.

Thus, Stillman comes back up to serve as a familiar extra option for the time being while the more offensively-inclined Smith suits up in Gostisbehere’s absence. Smith and Stillman had been in the same boat for most of the season, serving as a No. 7 but never getting into the lineup. That changed over the weekend when Gostisbehere’s injury marked the first time a regular Carolina defenseman has missed a game all season.

If the left-shot Stillman does get an NHL shot, it will be his first NHL appearance since April 2023 with the Sabres. While on assignment to the AHL this year, he has a goal and three assists with 11 PIMs and a -1 rating in nine appearances. In 158 career NHL games with the Panthers, Blackhawks, Canucks, and Sabres, he has four goals and 22 assists for 26 points with a -19 rating, 104 PIMs, and 318 hits while averaging 15:49 per game.

Drury’s IR placement doesn’t affect his timeline for a return from hand surgery that he underwent earlier this month. He’s not expected back until Jan. 15 against Buffalo at the earliest.

Morning Notes: Hughes, Pettersson, Murray, Skinner

Exactly how much longer the Canucks will remain without stars Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson remains to be seen. The club certainly won’t have their services for this week’s intra-division road trip, though, head coach Rick Tocchet told Jeff Paterson of CanucksArmy.

Pettersson’s return is more imminent than Hughes’, Tocchet said. Pettersson hasn’t been ruled out for Friday’s home game against the Predators, but a return on Monday in Montreal seems more likely, with Tocchet saying Pettersson will likely miss another week. Hughes’ timeline is muddier. After missing Saturday’s overtime loss to the Kraken with an undisclosed injury, he’s been labeled week to week and could likely miss another five games at a minimum.

The latter’s absence is an especially tough one to swallow for the Canucks, who have won one out of their last five games and are already missing their No. 2 defenseman, Filip Hronek, for another few weeks. Hughes has easily been their most valuable player this season, leading the club in scoring with 42 points (8 G, 34 A) in 34 games and ranking second among NHL defensemen in points behind the Avalanche’s Cale Makar. He’s averaging 25:08 per game and posting better offensive and defensive possession metrics at even strength than last season’s Norris Trophy-winning campaign.

Hughes missing action wouldn’t be so awful if Vancouver had their second-best offensive producer this season. But they won’t have Pettersson, who has 10 goals and 28 points through 34 appearances, for the time being, either. Like Hughes, the 26-year-old has only missed one game with an undisclosed injury so far.

  • The Maple Leafs have continued to shuffle NHL backup options in the absence of emergent No. 1 Anthony Stolarz. Veteran Matt Murray has been returned to AHL Toronto with Dennis Hildeby coming up to take his place for the time being, the team announced. Murray, 30, has allowed seven goals on 58 shots faced in two starts this month while sitting behind Joseph Woll on the depth chart, his first NHL action since the end of the 2022-23 regular season. In a small sample size, that tracks as a career-worst .879 SV% and 3.54 GAA for the two-time Stanley Cup champion. Hildeby’s NHL numbers this season haven’t been any better with a .875 SV% in three starts, but he does have a .916 SV% in his last four minor-league contests. It’s unclear if this is a paper move to extend Murray’s waiver-exempt period or if the Leafs intend on rostering Hildeby for tomorrow’s matinee game against the Islanders.
  • Oilers winger Jeff Skinner sat in the press box while healthy for the first time in a while yesterday as Edmonton was upset 5-3 by the Ducks. It was a foreseeable result, writes Sportsnet’s Mark Spector. Skinner had no points and a -4 rating in his five most recent outings, and the 32-year-old has been an overall disappointment with only six goals and 12 points in 35 games after signing a one-year, $3MM pact with the Oilers following a buyout by the Sabres. He’s now averaging 12:58 per game on the year, the lowest usage of his 15-year NHL career, and his 48.6% shot-attempt share at 5-on-5 is also a career low.

Lightning’s Jake Guentzel Day-To-Day, Michael Eyssimont Returns

The Tampa Bay Lightning will be without star scorer Jake Guentzel for the short term, as he’s been listed day-to-day with an upper-body injury. The injury forced Guentzel out of Tampa Bay’s lineup in their Sunday matchup against Montreal.

This marks Guetnzel’s first absence of the season. He’s otherwise been a core pillar of Tampa Bay’s top line, racking up 20 goals and 37 points in 33 games. Those totals put Guentzel second on the team in goals, but fourth in total points – a serious testament to the strength of the Lightning offense. There were plenty of worries to be had after Tampa Bay let longtime captain Steven Stamkos walk this summer. But the addition of Guentzel has helped the Bolts net 132 goals on the season, second-most in the NHL, with 98 of those goals coming from the team’s top-six forwards. Upholding that standing will fall on Nikita Kucherov, Brandon Hagel, and Brayden Point while Guentzel works his way back to full health

Michael Eyssimont filled the lineup vacancy left by Guentzel on Sunday, making his return after missing Tampa’s last game with a lower-body injury. Eyssimont stepped into his usual role on the fourth-line, while Cam Atkinson received a promotion to the top line. Neither player recorded any scoring in the matchup. They’ve both scored three goals and five points this season – Atkinson in 20 games, and Eyssimont in 31.
