Islanders Sign Austin Czarnik

October 12, 2020 at 7:02 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

After dealing away Devon Toews earlier today, the Islanders added some depth up front as PuckPedia reports (Twitter link) that they’ve signed center Austin Czarnik to a two-year contract.  The first year is a two-way deal worth $700K in the NHL and $350K in the minors with a $425K guarantee while the second season is one-way at $750K.

The 27-year-old was a high-end scorer in the minors back in 2017-18 with AHL Providence which helped him earn a two-year, $2.5MM contract with Calgary in 2018.  While he managed to stay with the Flames for all of the first year, he only suited up for them eight times last season, picking up two goals and an assist.  But after clearing waivers in December, Czarnik was sent to Stockton of the AHL for the rest of the year.  He was quite productive with the Heat, posting 16 goals and 17 assists in just 32 games.

Not surprisingly, that was able to help Czarnik land a pretty good contract as far as projected AHL players go.  While it’s possible that he contends for a spot on the fourth line in training camp, it’s more likely that he starts in a top role with AHL Bridgeport and gets recalled whenever injuries arise.

Colorado Avalanche Acquire Devon Toews

October 12, 2020 at 3:35 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 9 Comments

Just two days after trading away Nikita Zadorov, the Colorado Avalanche have replaced him with a new top-six defenseman. The New York Islanders announced that they have traded Devon Toews to Colorado in exchange for second-round picks in 2021 and 2022. Toews is an unsigned restricted free agent.

Toews, 26, only broke into the NHL in 2018-19, but has made a great first impression. As a rookie, Toews recorded 18 points in 48 games, claimed a role on the power play, and held his own defensively in a third pair role. This past season, he showed even more growth. In 68 games, he improved to 28 points, made an even bigger impact on the power play, improved defensively, and along the way ended up earning a top-four role with over 20 minutes of ice time per game. A slick puck-mover with great hockey IQ, Toews is a well-rounded defenseman whose relative inexperience has kept him underrated compared to his actual ability. Even at the cost of two high picks, this seems like a shrewd deal by GM Joe Sakic.

Unfortunately for the Islanders, someone had to go and Toews fit the bill. Working with just under $9MM in cap space, the Islanders needed to re-sign core contributors Mathew Barzal and Ryan Pulock, as well as Toews. Trading away Toews, who had filed for salary arbitration, is now one less contract that the team needs to squeeze in. With their depth on defense – Pulock, Johnny Boychuk, Nick Leddy, Adam Pelech, Scott Mayfield, Thomas Hickey and prospects Sebastian Aho and Noah Dobson – Toews was expendable, even if he played a major role this season. In fact, it would not be a surprise to see another defenseman move as the Isles make an effort to re-sign Barzal and Pulock without damaging the roster too much.

Cory Schneider Close To Deal With New York Islanders

October 12, 2020 at 11:39 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The New York Islanders are close to adding some more goaltending depth, as Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic tweets a deal is being finalized with Cory Schneider. While LeBrun points out the connection between the free agent goaltender and Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello from their time together in New Jersey, it does somewhat complicate things in New York.

Schneider, 34, was recently bought out by the Devils after struggling with injury and inconsistency the last several seasons, and likely would have to accept the third goaltender role in the Islanders organization. The team already has veteran starter Semyon Varlamov and young phenom Ilya Sorokin in the mix, meaning unless there is another move coming—or the team is going back to the three-headed goaltending option—Schneider would likely have to spend time in the minor leagues once again.

In a condensed 2020-21 season there will be a need for goaltending depth as teams are forced to play games at a heightened pace, but it’s hard to believe that Schneider would be able to displace either of the Islanders two top goaltenders. Though he was once a legitimate starting option who even challenged for the Vezina Trophy, Schneider hasn’t posted a save percentage above .910 since the 2015-16 season.

Of course, the Islanders also employ goaltending guru Mitch Korn, who has resurrected careers before and should be able to help Schneider get things back on track, if not all the way back to his previous level. At the very least, he’ll be some veteran depth in case of injury.

Islanders Swap Kyle Burroughs To Colorado For A.J. Greer

October 11, 2020 at 12:07 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The New York Islanders have made a minor swap of players, sending defenseman Kyle Burroughs to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for winger A.J. Greer, according to Newsday’s Andrew Gross.

With the swap, the Islanders add the 23-year-old Greer, who looks to be on the cusp of earning his way onto a team’s fourth line. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound winger is a restricted free agent, but has the potential to step into the Islanders line-up if the team doesn’t sign unrestricted free agents Matt Martin and Derick Brassard. A second-round pick in the 2015 draft, Greer spent the entire 2019-20 season with the Colorado Eagles in the AHL where he posted 16 goals, 32 points and 87 penalty minutes in 47 games. He has appeared in 37 career NHL games and could fill in on their well-known fourth line, if needed.

The Avalanche add some depth to their defense in bringing in Burroughs, who has yet to make his NHL debut. The 25-year-old blueliner has spent the last five seasons with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL. Never a particularly offensive-minded player, Burroughs scored two goals and eight points in 58 games with 69 penalty minutes. He is likely earmarked to join recently acquired Dennis Gilbert with the Eagles to replace Anton Lindholm and Mark Alt.

Islanders Loan Otto Koivula To HIFK

October 9, 2020 at 7:12 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Islanders have found a place for another one of their youngsters to play while we wait for NHL training camps to begin.  The team announced (Twitter link) that they’ve loaned forward Otto Koivula to HIFK in Finland.

The 22-year-old made his NHL debut last season, playing in a dozen games for New York where he was held off the scoresheet.  However, he fared well at the AHL level with Bridgeport, tallying nine goals and 13 assists in 36 games although those numbers were down from his 46 points (21-25-46) in his rookie season.  Koivula was on New York’s playoff roster although he didn’t get into any games.

Depending on what the Islanders do with their fourth line for next season, there could be an opening or two on the roster so a good start for Koivula could certainly give him a leg up heading into training camp.  If not, he’ll likely be one of the first recalls during the season when injuries arise.

New York Islanders Announce Qualifying Offers

October 5, 2020 at 2:48 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The New York Islanders have tendered qualifying offers to several players ahead of the upcoming free agent period. Mathew Barzal, Kyle Burroughs, Joshua Ho-Sang, Grant Hutton, Ryan Pulock, Devon Toews, Mitch Vande Sompel, and Parker Wotherspoon have all received qualifying offers. After re-signing Sebastian Aho to a two-year deal, that leaves just Linus Soderstrom unqualified. Soderstrom will become an unrestricted free agent on Friday.

While Soderstrom’s exclusion may raise some eyebrows, the most surprising decision here may be to qualify Ho-Sang. The Islanders and their enigmatic prospect have never really seen eye-to-eye and it appeared as though the two sides were going to finally have a chance to part ways. Instead, Arthur Staple of The Athletic reported last week that New York actually would be qualifying the 24-year-old, keeping him in the organization that drafted him six years ago.

It’s not just that Ho-Sang hasn’t made an impact at the NHL level, it’s that he has constantly clashed with the Islanders coaching staff and management teams on his career path. The first-round pick has believed he deserved more time in the NHL to show what he could do and this year even officially requested a trade and was told not to report to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Ho-Sang ended up playing six games for the San Antonio Rampage, the AHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues before the season was canceled.

Obviously, it is difficult to see a path forward between the two sides, but that doesn’t mean Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello is going to throw away an asset (regardless of value).

New York Islanders Re-Sign Sebastian Aho

October 5, 2020 at 1:52 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The New York Islanders have reached an agreement on a new two-year contract with Sebastian Aho, according to Arthur Staple of The Athletic. No, the Carolina Hurricanes star forward has not somehow signed another offer sheet. The Islanders have signed their own Aho, a restricted free agent defenseman that has spent the last two seasons in the AHL.

Aho, 24, was a fifth-round pick of the Islanders back in 2017 and actually played in 22 NHL games during the 2017-18 season. Since then he has been manning the Bridgeport Sound Tigers blue line, racking up points as one of the minor league’s most effective offensive defensemen. This season, Aho scored 30 points in 49 games and was included on the Islanders 52-man travelling party for the return to play postseason.

Aho’s deal will be a two-way contract in 2020-21 and a one-way in 2021-22 according to Staple, avoiding restricted free agency. He will qualify for Group VI unrestricted free agency at the expiration of the contract if he fails to play in 58 NHL games over the next two seasons.

Offseason Keys: New York Islanders

October 3, 2020 at 7:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The offseason is now upon us with the Stanley Cup being awarded earlier this week.  Having covered the teams that weren’t a part of the NHL’s return and the ones ousted in the Qualifying Round and the first two official rounds, we shift our focus to the ones that were eliminated in the Conference Finals.  Next up is a look at the Islanders.

Even though the Islanders made it to the second round of the playoffs last season, many dismissed them as an afterthought heading into this year, putting them as a bubble team at best.  That wound up holding true as they were sixth in the Metropolitan Division before the pandemic hit (out of a spot in the postseason) but the expanded format in the Return to Play put them in.  New York certainly made the most of it as they took out Florida, Washington, and Philadelphia before falling to the eventual Stanley Cup champions in Tampa Bay.  GM Lou Lamoriello will now turn his focus towards trying to help them take that next step.  Here’s what he will need to accomplish in order to have a shot at accomplishing that.

Free Up Cap Space

Yes, this again.  It’s hardly the first time this has been a key in this series and even though we’re near the end, it won’t be the last either.  The Islanders have nearly $9MM in cap room which doesn’t seem bad but when you consider that their list of restricted free agents includes their leading scorer and two regulars on the back end (Ryan Pulock and Devon Toews) that logged over 20 minutes a game, it’s clearly not going to be enough to keep them in the fold let alone try to add to their core group.

The back end may be where Lamoriello tries to trim from.  Nick Leddy ($5.5MM) and Johnny Boychuk ($6MM) have two years left on their respective contracts and of the two, Leddy is the easier to move.  While his point production has dipped in recent years relative to how he performed upon being acquired, he’s still trusted by head coach Barry Trotz to log over 21 minutes a night.  The list of free agent defensemen that can play that many minutes is low so there should be some trade value here.  Boychuk, meanwhile, has a buyout-proof contract due to signing bonuses and front-loading and is more of a depth defender at this stage of his career.  Finding a taker without significant retention would be difficult.

Things aren’t any easier up front either.  Andrew Ladd also has a buyout-proof deal (it’d count more on the cap to buy him out over merely sending him to the minors) while Leo Komarov and Cal Clutterbuck are overpaid for their roles but won’t have much of a trade market as well.  Casey Cizikas is also overpaid for his role but on an expiring deal, there could be some interest.

It’s unlikely that Lamoriello will want to subtract from his core.  Finding a way to do that, re-sign his players, and still add to his roster is going to take a lot of creativity.

Re-Sign Barzal

Mathew Barzal has played three years in the NHL.  He has led the Islanders in scoring in all three of those seasons.  In doing so, he has replaced former captain John Tavares as their franchise player.  With his entry-level deal now concluded, he stands to land a massive raise on the $863K he earned in each of the last three years.  In a normal market, simply adding a zero to the end of that dollar amount might be a rough idea of what his next deal may cost.

Of course, this isn’t a normal market.  While Barzal has been their top point producer in his three seasons, his point total has been in the low 60s the last two seasons (the pandemic playing a part in that this year).  That should be enough to keep him out of the top end of the post-ELC price points at the very least.  It’s fair to at least wonder if it’s enough to get Lamoriello to see if Barzal is willing to take a bridge deal as well.  Doing so would lessen the amount of cap room to free up and would position the 23-year-old to take another run at restricted free agency with arbitration rights a year or two from now with the potential of the salary landscape being more favorable.

However, other teams are certainly aware of New York’s cap situation.  There’s a reason that Barzal has been a speculative offer sheet candidate for a while now.  Lamoriello has already said that the Islanders will match any offer made but if Barzal wants a long-term deal, he can try to leverage it through that route and force their hand to match.  The odds of Barzal being in an Islander uniform next season are high but the deal he gets could go a few different ways.

Add Offensive Help

This past season, the Islanders were 23rd in scoring and 24th on the power play.  The year before, when they had 101 points, they were 21st in goals scored and 29th with the man advantage.  Barzal was the lone player to reach 60 points (right on the dot) while Brock Nelson (26) and Anders Lee (20) were the only Islanders to get 20 goals.  Again, the pandemic played a role in that but even so, goal production has been an issue.  With a gritty, defense-first roster, this isn’t that surprising of a stat but for them to take that next step, they’re going to have to add.

With their cap situation and who still needs new deals, shopping at the top of the free agent market almost certainly isn’t going to happen.  Instead, they’ll have to look in the bargain bin and try to find someone that can contribute in a middle-six role.  Basically, something like they tried with Derick Brassard last summer who picked up 32 points for a $1.2MM price tag while adding eight points in 18 playoff games.

Retaining him could be an option but that would still only keep the offense from 2019-20 intact without really adding to it.  It’s unlikely that Lamoriello will be active in the early going in free agency but as the weeks progress, he would be wise to see if there’s a bargain or two to be had to give them a bit more offensive firepower.

Islanders Notes: Injuries, RFAs, Barzal

September 29, 2020 at 4:14 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello spoke to the media today, giving his thoughts on several topics. As Andrew Gross of Newsday tweets, that included an update on several injured players. Casey Cizikas, Adam Pelech, and Tom Kuhnhackl have all undergone successful surgeries and are expected to be ready for the start of the 2020-21 training camp (whenever that takes place).

While Cizikas and Pelech are heading into the last year of their respective contracts, Kuhnhackl will actually become an unrestricted free agent next month. The 28-year-old forward suited up in three postseason games for the Islanders and could potentially be brought back as a depth option next season.

  • While Kuhnhackl is one of several unrestricted free agent decisions the team has, there are even more to be made on restricted free agents. While players like Mathew Barzal and Ryan Pulock are obviously going to get qualifying offers, that may not be the case for some of the Islanders minor league players. In fact, Lamoriello expects that there will be one or two RFAs not qualified. That may be the case in many organizations around the league as teams navigate their new financial situations.
  • For Barzal though, Lamoriello isn’t worried about the upcoming negotiation. When asked about the danger of an offer sheet, Lamoriello told Gross that he is confident the team will get their players signed. The 23-year-old center is coming off another excellent season and showed he could be a postseason performer as well with 17 points in 22 games.

East Notes: Stamkos, Zadina, Islanders, Lundqvist

September 20, 2020 at 2:30 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 6 Comments

The Tampa Bay Lightning are now down 1-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals and, of course, the question of Steven Stamkos’ availability came up in the most recent press conference. Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said he doubted that Stamkos would be ready for Game 2, but did speculate further on the possibility that Stamkos could make an appearance for the Lightning at some point in the series, according to The Athletic’s Joe Smith.

Cooper said that Stamkos is “inching closer” to a return and it’s “killing him” not to play, but the coach also said he refuses to put him in if he’s not ready. Cooper said the team needs to make sure his conditioning is up and both he and the medical staff are both comfortable with Stamkos on the ice.

  • The Detroit Red Wings sent 2018 first-round pick Filip Zadina to the Czech Republic to continue playing until the 2020-21 begins, but already have felt the danger of loaning out one of their players. HC Ocelari Trinec announced that Zadina will miss the next few weeks with a upper-body injury that he sustained during a game Sunday. While there is no word on how serious the injury is, the diagnosis that he will be out a few weeks likely means it won’t threaten his availability when the NHL begins their 2020-21 season, which likely now won’t be until at least January 2021. Zadina took over a top-six spot late in the season, scoring eight goals and 15 points in 28 games and is a key component to the team’s 2020-21 season.
  • With four pending unrestricted free agents coming up in the offseason, the New York Islanders have quite a few decisions to make about who they intend to keep. While general manager Lou Lamoriello was able to re-sign most of his UFA’s last season, that’s not likely to be the case. Newsday’s Andrew Gross reports that the team may only keep one of them this time around, suggesting that forward Matt Martin could be the only one to retain. The team isn’t likely to bring back goaltender Thomas Greiss now that Ilya Sorokin is on board, although Gross does add that Lamoriello does have a long-standing relationship with Andy Greene, so the team could potentially bring him back as well.
  • USA Today’s Vince Mercogliano looks at the Rangers goaltending situation, suggesting the Rangers may have no choice but to buyout long-time Rangers icon Henrik Lundqvist when the buyout window opens on Sept. 25. General manager Jeff Gorton said he doesn’t plan to keep three goaltenders on the roster and word is the Rangers have not liked any offers they’ve received for Alexandar Georgiev, suggesting the team could save significant cap space in the future if they let go of Lundqvist, including $3MM next season and quite a bit more in 2021-22. With a trade unlikely for Lundqvist even if the Rangers retain half of his $8.5MM salary, the team could announce a buyout as soon as Friday, although at this point, anything is still possible.
