Jets’ Morrissey Injury “Not Good,” Says Coach Scott Arniel

The Winnipeg Jets not only lost Game 6 against the Dallas Stars, ending their season, but they also lost key defender Josh Morrissey to a potentially significant injury, per a TSN report.

Morrissey was injured in the second period of Game 6 after getting tangled up with Stars forward Mikko Rantanen. His knee appeared to twist awkwardly, and after struggling to get to the bench, Morrissey was helped to the locker room and did not return. Following the game, head coach Scott Arniel said the injury is “not good,” but that the team would learn more upon returning to Canada. Arniel noted that Morrissey’s injury was among a series of obstacles the team had to face against the Stars.

“Again, losing Josh tonight was a big blow. Just a lot of circumstances that happened. Our leadership within our group kept grinding everybody and pushing everybody. It’s growth. It hurts a lot. But we lost to a great team,” Arniel said.

Morrissey enjoyed a fantastic regular season, recording his third consecutive campaign with over 60 points. Typically a model of durability — with at least 78 games played in each of the last four seasons — Morrissey wasn’t as fortunate in the playoffs, where he sustained two separate injuries that forced him to miss time. He was also injured in Game 7 of the first round against the St. Louis Blues after being hit by Oskar Sundqvist, which caused him to miss Game 1 against the Stars.

It remains unclear whether the injury Morrissey suffered against the Stars is related to his earlier ailment, and the full extent has yet to be revealed. If the injury proves to be serious, he’ll have the entire offseason to recover with the goal of being ready for the start of the 2025–26 campaign.

The Western Conference finals are set, as the defending conference champion Edmonton Oilers will take on the Dallas Stars, led by the phenomenal play of Mikko Rantanen. It’s a rematch from last season’s conference final, where the Oilers came out on top in six games.

The Oilers have been on a heater since starting round one with a 2-0 series deficit against the Los Angeles Kings. Since then, the Oilers have lost just one game, winning four in a row against the Kings before taking down the Golden Knights in five games. Unsurprisingly, the team is being led by superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who have combined for 33 points in 11 games. The Oilers lead all teams with 43 playoff goals, averaging nearly 4 goals per game.

The Oilers have also benefited from standout play by defenseman Evan Bouchard, who leads the team with 26:24 of ice time per game in the playoffs, while contributing 12 points and a team-high 13 takeaways. This continues Bouchard’s tremendous playoff run from last season, when he recorded 32 points and a plus-14 rating, helping the Oilers reach Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

An intriguing storyline for the Oilers heading into the Western Conference Final is the performance of their goaltenders. Despite the team cruising through two rounds, Calvin Pickard and Stuart Skinner have combined for just an .886 save percentage, which doesn’t inspire much confidence during a playoff run. At some point, it stands to reason that the Oilers may struggle to sustain their momentum with that level of goaltending. That said, Pickard has been perfect since stepping in as the starter, posting a 6-0 record and providing timely saves when needed.

The Stars are being carried by Rantanen, whose league-leading 19 playoff points have been nothing short of spectacular. However, offensive support from the rest of the roster has been inconsistent. Wyatt Johnston, who tallied 71 points during the regular season, has managed just eight in the playoffs and carries a troubling minus-13 rating. Veterans Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn have struggled to make an impact, while 20-goal scorers Evgenii Dadonov and Mikael Granlund have failed to replicate their regular-season production. Despite Rantanen’s heroics, Dallas enters the Western Conference Final with a minus-four goal differential.

That also includes the exceptional goaltending of Jake Oettinger, who has posted a .919 save percentage through 13 playoff games. The 26-year-old has been a consistently reliable performer in the postseason, carrying a .913 save percentage over 60 career appearances. His steady presence in the net will be critical as Dallas prepares to face Edmonton’s high-powered offense.

Ken Holland Accepts Kings GM Position

May 16: According to a report from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Holland’s contract with the Kings will run for three years.

May 13: After days of anticipation, it has been released that Ken Holland has accepted the Kings’ general manager role, per Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press (paywalled content). St. James covered Holland for many years during his extensive career with the Detroit Red Wings. Holland will become the 10th GM in Kings’ history.

May 12: It appears that the Kings are making progress with Holland.  Friedman reports that indications are that Los Angeles is closing in on landing Holland as their next GM.

May 10: Former Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland recently met with the Los Angeles Kings to discuss their open GM position, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman noted in his 32 Thoughts podcast.

As Friedman notes, the Kings are surveying both internal and external options, but Holland is firmly in the mix. On the podcast, Friedman said, “One of the names that is starting to circulate a little bit right now for the Kings is Ken Holland. He was in the mix for the Islanders and I am reserving judgment for where I think the Islanders could be going here,” Friedman said. “But I’ve heard Holland’s name with the Kings and if they go external, he may have a shot here.”

The longtime general manager of the Red Wings, Ken Holland, led the team to four Stanley Cup championships. In 2019, he was promoted to senior vice president to make way for Steve Yzerman to take over as general manager. Soon after, Holland was named general manager of the Oilers and tasked with leading a young, talented roster to championship success—just as he had done in Detroit. Despite several deep playoff runs, including falling just one win short last season, he was ultimately unable to deliver a title. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, Holland and the team mutually agreed to part ways. Holland has also been rumored for other teams this hiring cycle, including the New York Islanders.

As Pierre LeBrun notes, Holland met with Kings president Luc Robitaille to discuss the position. But as Lebrun adds, the expectation is the team will meet with several more candidates before any decision is made. On May 5, the Kings and former GM Rob Blake mutually agreed to part ways, with Robitaille tasked to lead a search for Blake’s successor. Blake leaves his successor with a favorable salary cap structure. The Kings have over $23MM to spend this summer with just four roster spots to fill, per PuckPedia.

Mattias Ekholm Could Return For Oilers In Conference Finals

Edmonton Oilers defender Mattias Ekholm remains day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, but coach Kris Knoblauch said Tuesday that the veteran could be available for the conference finals if the Oilers advance, reports NHL.com staff writer Derek Van Diest.

Ekholm has played just once since late March, returning for a single game on April 11 after a seven-game absence, only to aggravate his injury again. The 34-year-old has missed all 10 of the team’s playoff games, but Knoblauch mentioned he’s back skating and could return soon.

As Knoblauch stated: “Mattias has been on the ice for light skates,” Knoblauch said. “He will not be joining us this series. We’re hopeful that he can join us next series if we can get to that.”

The Oilers have performed impressively despite missing one of their top defenders and are now just one win away from another trip to the conference finals. But getting Ekholm back in the lineup would undoubtedly bolster the team’s Stanley Cup hopes. Ekholm posted nine goals and 33 points in 65 regular-season games and is just one season removed from posting a career-high 11 goals. However, Elholm’s playoff experience is where his value is felt most. He has appeared in 112 playoff games over his 14-year career and was a key contributor during the Oilers’ deep playoff run last season, recording five goals, 10 points, and a plus-nine rating in 25 games.

In his absence, the Oilers have used a variety of combinations on the back end, which includes the likes of Ty Emberson and Troy Stecher. Emberson has appeared in nine playoff games but has averaged just 9:29 of ice time per game. Stecher replaced Emberson in the Game 4 lineup, logging 16:46 of ice time in the shutout win.

Logan Stanley Set To Be Healthy Scratch For Jets

Despite a clean bill of health, Winnipeg Jets defenseman Logan Stanley is expected to be a healthy scratch for Game 4 against the Dallas Stars, per Mike McIntyre of Winnipeg News.

Known for his physical presence, Stanley was injured in Game 6 of the team’s first-round matchup against the St. Louis Blues. Before his injury, he posted 42 penalty minutes in five games and had no points and a negative plus-minus to show for it. The massive 6’7” presence could give the team a physically imposing force on the back end, but his style of play may not be the best matchup against Mikko Rantanen and the Stars’ skill-heavy attack. The 26-year-old recorded one goal, 14 points, 88 hits, 76 blocked shots, and 78 penalty minutes in 63 regular-season contests this season.

As the Jets look to even the series, Haydn Fleury will remain slotted into the lineup on the team’s third defensive pairing alongside veteran Colin Miller. Fleury recorded seven assists and a minus-12 in 39 regular-season games. However, his playoff metrics have looked much better, as he’s produced a plus-two rating and chipped in two assists in five games thus far. Additionally, he has averaged 17:24 of ice time per game in the playoffs — a solid increase from his regular season average of 15:56 — showcasing a growing level of trust in the 28-year-old’s play. That figure was certainly inflated by their double-overtime victory in Game 7 of the first round. However, that opportunity provided Fleury with the platform to highlight the impact Fleury can have on the blue line, as he logged a career-high 33:02 after Josh Morrissey left in the first period with an injury.

Winnipeg coach Scott Arniel recently told media, including NHL.com staff writer Tracey Myers, that Fleury provides the team with a mobile option on the back end. “Again, another skillset. He’s real mobile, he can skate out of trouble. Another guy that can be a part of that rush, a part of what we’re talking about getting after Dallas here and getting on our toes. And that’s what he brings to our game,” Arniel said.

Canucks GM Allvin States Team Is Interested In Retaining Brock Boeser

Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin appeared to extend an olive branch to soon-to-be free agent Brock Boeser, adding another twist to their ongoing saga, per Patrick Johnston of The Province.

Allvin met with season ticket holders and answered some questions from the fanbase, with several directed at the ongoing situation involving Boeser. On one hand, Allvin has been clear the team needs to acquire goal scorers. On the other, the franchise and Boeser have been at odds over a potential contract negotiation. So, where does the franchise stand on the idea of keeping Boeser in Vancouver? Allvin simply stated, “We’re going to see if there’s a chance to keep Brock Boeser.”

If Allvin’s words hold weight, the Canucks still have time to negotiate a contract extension with Brock Boeser and his agent, Ben Hankinson. The challenge, however, is that at this stage in the process, a hometown discount seems unlikely. With free agency fast approaching, Vancouver will likely need to match, or exceed, the going market rate to retain their star forward.

Boeser was a big name during the trade deadline, but a rich asking price kept him with the Canucks for the remainer of the season. Then in April, Boeser acknowledged that the chances of re-signing with Vancouver beyond this season were unlikely. He said at the time: “Honestly, it’s unlikely at this point. It sucks, it’s unfortunate. I’m just trying to play good hockey, and then I’ll worry about everything after that. We all know it’s been a roller coaster of a year. There’s been a lot of different things.”

In late February, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported that Boeser declined a five-year, $40MM extension. This would have represented a raise on his expiring contract, but maybe isn’t what Hankinson believes Boeser can get on the open market, especially with the salary cap set to climb. However, Boeser’s production (25 goals and 50 points) did not match his 2023-24 results of a career-highs of 40 goals and 73 points. It will be interesting to see what kind of deal Boeser signs this offseason—and where he ultimately lands.

Jay McKee Could Be On Flyers Coaching Radar

As Flyers general manager Daniel Brière and his staff continue to explore options for their next head coach, the list of candidates keeps growing, and current OHL coach Jay McKee could be among those in consideration, per Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Brière has previously stated that the next head coach should be someone who can effectively communicate with, and develop, a young roster. That’s where Briere’s former teammate McKee, the current head coach of the OHL’s Brantford Bulldogs, may excel. At just 47-year-old, McKee had a successful career in the NHL and has a great track record coaching younger players in the OHL. These qualities, along with the familiarity Brière has with his former teammate, may make McKee a strong candidate for the Flyers’ head coaching job.

McKee led Brantford to a 44-19-5 record this past season, and helped the team capture the 2022 OHL title. McKee has spent parts of eight seasons as a head coach in the OHL. His coaching career began in 2011 when he was named an assistant coach of the Rochester Americans. McKee began his coaching career as an assistant with the OHL’s Erie Otters, where he worked with future superstar Connor McDavid. He later served several seasons as head coach of the Kitchener Rangers before taking over behind the bench in Brantford in 2021. Since then, he has compiled a 121-62-21 record and led the team to one division title. And as Hall points out, several coaches have successfully made the jump from the OHL to the NHL, including Jacques Martin, Peter DeBoer, and Sheldon Keefe.

In addition to McKee, the Flyers have also been linked Philly legend Rick Tocchet, Western Michigan University coach Pat Ferschweiler, and current interim head coach Brad Shaw.

Ducks Owner Henry Samueli Discusses Future Goals For Team

In a rare interview, Anaheim Ducks owner Henry Samueli discussed the need to provide GM Pat Verbeek with more financial flexibility, the decision to hire coach Joel Quenneville, and his desire to make the team a Stanley Cup contender moving forward, per Eric Stephens of The Athletic.

After seven consecutive seasons without making the playoffs (including a 35-37-10 record this year, Samueli said he wants a more competitive team moving forward. Samueli, 70, has owned the team for more than 20 years and oversaw the team’s 2007 Stanley Cup win. As Samueli put it, “That is the pressure we’re putting on both Pat and Joel. They know that the fans and the ownership expect to make the playoffs this (next) season. There’s a lot of pressure to put on a coach and a GM. But you got to do it.”

He added that the team has completed its rebuilding process and have reached the point where they’re looking to win. He said the team is now focused on becoming “perennial playoff contenders” and noted that they needed to add an experienced head coach to support with that goal. Enter Quenneville, who despite his baggage, comes with the second-most wins of any coach.

“And that was one of the main reasons for wanting to bring someone like a Joel Quenneville in, because we felt comfortable that he could take us from the end of a rebuild to the beginning of a playoff era.”

Samueli was also specifically asked about the optics of hiring someone with Quenneville’s history. He discussed the thorough investigation the team underwent and ultimately determined they were comfortable with Quenneville moving forward. As he said: “I fully respect people who have negative opinions or going to have negative comments. There’s a lot of people who are victims of abuse, and I have nothing but the most respect for them. We’ll listen and try to convince them that we really did go through a thorough process and that Joel really is a good person who happened to make a mistake. I feel comfortable that we can deal with the situation.”

Samueli acknowledged that success requires spending more, starting with the price tag of Quenneville’s salary. However, when asked if he would allow Verbeek to spend to the cap, Samueli said he has given his GM the flexibility to make the moves necessary to make the team a playoff contender. He added, “If it means signing big-name free agents, go for it. We told him going forward you will not be constrained by the budget.”

Heiskanen To Miss Game 3 For Stars

The Dallas Stars have ruled out top defender Miro Heiskanen for today’s Game 3 matchup against the Winnipeg Jets, per team reporter Mike Heika. Heiskanen has not suited up since having surgery in February to repair a knee injury.

Prior to the series, coach Pete DeBoer listed Heiskanen and forward Jason Robertson as day-to-day. While Robertson returned from his knee injury for Game 1, Heiskanen has yet to rejoin the lineup. DeBoer maintains that Heiskanen is day-to-day, but did tell reporters to quell expectations whenever the defender does return.

“When he comes back, it’s going to be a good day. But even when he comes back, he’s been out for three and a half months. He’s going to help immediately, but we’re going to have to temper our expectations.”

DeBoer noted that the team is excited to have Heiskanen back, but also emphasized that they’ve managed to succeed in his absence. His greater concern seems to be the team’s lack of offensive production. While Miko Rantanen has been on a tear, Matt Duchene, Jamie Benn, Mason Marchment, and Mikael Granlund have struggled in the playoffs. With Robertson and Tyler Seguin not at full strength, and the Stars need to dig deep to find ways to light the lamp post.

As DeBoer noted: “We need guys to get on the board, but you also have to understand that Winnipeg is the best defensive team in the league and it’s not going to be easy. We might not get guys lighting it up this series, we might have to win 1-0, 2-1. It would be great if everyone was scoring, but it’s more important that we’re winning games.”

Golden Knights’ Mark Stone Out Day-To-Day

While the Vegas Golden Knights came away with a Game Three win over the Edmonton Oilers last night, not all the news out of Vegas was positive. Captain Mark Stone left the game in the first period with an injury and did not return. He is now listed as day-to-day, per Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The team announced on social media that Stone would not be returning after leaving the game with 6:20 of the first period due to an upper-body injury. The injury occurred when stone collided with Corey Perry in the neutral zone. After remaining down for a brief second, Stone skated back to the bench and did not return. While Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy didn’t provide much of an update after the game, he did state that Stone could be available as soon as Game 4. He added that the team would learn more about Stone’s status today.

If Stone does miss time, Cassidy said it provides players like Reilly Smith more of an opportunity to step up. As Cassidy told reporters: “It seemed the guys wanted to pick him up. What it does is allow other players like a Reilly Smith to get more opportunity, and he took advantage of it.”

While the Golden Knights managed to avoid a 3-0 series deficit without Stone, they’ll undoubtedly need their captain—not just for his leadership, but for his proven playoff performance. In 84 career playoff games with Vegas, Stone has posted 36 goals and 72 points, including eight points in nine games this season. As series victory, as well as a deep run in the playoffs, will likely hinge on getting Stone back into the lineup.
