Ilya Kovalchuk Named GM Of Russian Olympic Team

October 18, 2021 at 9:35 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Russian entry to the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, will feature many familiar faces on the ice. Alex Ovechkin, Nikita Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevskiy were named as the first three players on the roster earlier this month, with many more NHL talents to come. Those familiar faces won’t stop on the roster though, as the coaching staff and front office are also filled with names many North American hockey fans will know.

Ilya Kovalchuk has been named general manager of the squad, according to KHL reporter Gillian Kemmerer. He joins head coach Alexei Zhamnov, as well as assistants Sergei Gonchar, Sergei Fedorov, Alexei Kudashov, and Evgeni Nabokov on the quest for Olympic gold.

Kovalchuk, 38, spent last season in the KHL playing for Avangard Omsk when he failed to find an NHL deal. Despite being very open about his desire to win a Stanley Cup before he retired, he was forced to settle for another Gagarin Cup championship, his third in an outstanding career. One of the most impressive goal-scoring talents in NHL history, he’ll now start a new chapter in the front office, trying to help his country win another Olympic gold. Kovalchuk was the tournament MVP in 2018 when the Russians won, though no NHL players were eligible to attend that event.

Snapshots: Eichel, Andersson, Colliton

October 17, 2021 at 4:00 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 12 Comments

Though there’s still no real news on Jack Eichel and his continued standoff with the Buffalo Sabres, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet did give a bit of an update on the situation last night. Part of that update is that the Sabres do not want to retain salary on Eichel’s massive contract, which certainly isn’t unexpected but does make trade more difficult.

In fact, Friedman notes that the Colorado Avalanche called Buffalo about Eichel, but when the Sabres said they wouldn’t retain salary the conversation ended immediately. That’s likely not the only contender in that situation, as Eichel’s $10MM contract is difficult to fit in for anyone pushing the salary cap upper limit. Buffalo is willing to take contracts back, but it appears as though they don’t want to be tied to Eichel at all moving forward.

  • Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson has escaped without a suspension after his incident with Edmonton Oilers forward Kailer Yamamoto last night. Andersson has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for roughing. The two got into it and it appeared to many as though Andersson delivered a headbutt to Yamamoto’s face, but the league determined that the actual play did not rise to a level of suspension.
  • After three games and three losses, the Chicago Blackhawks find themselves in trouble to start the season and already there have been calls to change the coaching staff. Mark Lazerus of The Athletic examines the bad start and notes that head coach Jeremy Colliton’s seat is getting hot, while Charlie Roumeliotis of NBC Sports writes about how the “urgency is building” despite it being so early in the season. The Blackhawks have allowed 13 goals in their first three games, tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the most in the NHL so far.

Nikolai Knyzhov To Undergo Surgery

October 17, 2021 at 2:12 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

One of the interesting new members of the San Jose Sharks last season was Nikolai Knyzhov, who played in all 56 games and recorded ten points. The 23-year-old defenseman was set to build on that rookie campaign, but will have to wait a few months. Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reports that Knyzhov will have surgery on October 22 and faces an eight- to ten-week recovery timeline thereafter. Originally trying to rehab his lower-body injury, the decision was made that surgery is now the best option.

Just 23, Knyzhov was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019 out of Russia. He had only really played in the MHL and VHL to that point, but the Sharks obviously saw his mix of size–6’2″ 218-lbs–and exceptional skating ability as a potential NHL combination. After one year spent mostly in the AHL, he was a regular in the lineup last season and proved he could be a key contributor to the Sharks.

Without him, the team still has plenty of options on the back end, though not many of them have the same mix of youth and potential. Brent Burns logged a game-high 27:26 for the team last night, with Radim Simek playing fewer than 12 minutes. Given how little the team has been using Marc-Edouard Vlasic, it appears as though the heavy load will fall on Burns, Mario Ferraro, and Erik Karlsson.

New York Rangers Recall Morgan Barron

October 17, 2021 at 12:33 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

A simple recall of a forward is not usually important news, but for the New York Rangers today, it could reveal more about a different top prospect. The team has recalled Morgan Barron from the Hartford Wolf Pack, moving Kaapo Kakko to injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

Baron’s recall is not really surprising. The 22-year-old has come a long way since being a sixth-round pick in 2017 and was already on the fringe of making the roster out of camp. The 6’4″ forward played five games for the Rangers last season, scoring his first NHL goal. He has two goals in his first two AHL games of this season, continuing to show that he can be a dominant force at that level.

It’s the fact that the spot didn’t go to Vitali Kravtsov that is the headline here, as the disgruntled forward remains in limbo. Refusing an assignment to the AHL, Kravtsov and his representatives have been given permission to seek a trade. Last night on Hockey Night In Canada, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman updated the situation:

I understand the Rangers have asked him ’would you like to go to AHL Hartford and work your way back up?’ Kaapo Kakko got hurt tonight. At this point in time he hasn’t agreed, I don’t know if he will, but the offer is out there for him to return.

Russ Cohen of Sportsology reports that Kravtsov is back in Chelyabinsk and was at the Traktor-Dynamo game today. Cohen adds that he’s been told there are five NHL teams interested.

Meanwhile, Kakko will miss at least seven days after being placed on injured reserve, but no definite timeline has been released for his potential return. Head coach Gerard Gallant called him “day-to-day” after the game, but there has been no update other than the IR placement since.

Auston Matthews To Return For Maple Leafs

October 17, 2021 at 12:20 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Toronto Maple Leafs offense hasn’t been quite as explosive as years past through the first few games, with just seven goals for through three contests. That could change pretty quickly as Auston Matthews is expected to play tomorrow night against the New York Rangers.

It will be the first time the Maple Leafs play a non-Canadian team in more than a year, a perfect time for their superstar center to return. Matthews missed the first three games as he recovered from offseason wrist surgery, but is now back to full health and ready to go.

Matthews, the reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner, has 199 goals through his first 334 games in the NHL and led the league with 12 game-winning tallies in 2020-21. He has also now registered more than a point-per-game in each of the last four seasons, though his assist total fell to just 25, a career-low, in 52 games last season.

John Klingberg Looking For Long-Term Extension

October 16, 2021 at 8:24 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The focus right now may be on Adam Fox as the next defenseman to sign a massive contract, but he’s certainly not the only one. Dallas Stars defenseman John Klingberg is in the final season of his seven-year, $29.75MM deal signed in 2015, and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. Jeff Marek of Sportsnet reports that Klingberg’s camp is looking for an eight-year extension worth somewhere between $62MM and $66MM.

Marek, who explained his report on Hockey Night In Canada, made clear that the Stars and Klingberg are hoping to stay together beyond this season if possible. The big comparables for the 29-year-old defenseman are Darnell Nurse, Seth Jones, and Dougie Hamilton, who all inked massive deals this summer that bought out exclusively UFA years.

A $64MM deal would mean an $8MM cap hit for the veteran defenseman, a number that was eclipsed by all three of the listed names and would tie Klingberg–with Jacob Trouba, Thomas Chabot, John Carlson, and Brent Burns–for the 13th-highest among all defensemen next season.

There are few defensemen who have been so consistent offensively as Klingberg throughout his eight-year career. The 2010 fifth-round pick has recorded at least 32 points in each year and has amassed 327 overall in his 479-game career. That ranks ninth in the league over that period, more than both Hamilton and Jones despite Klingberg playing in fewer overall games.

With that in mind, the reported ask actually doesn’t seem excessive for Klingberg, though a deal like that would certainly still bring plenty of risk for the Stars. Of note, he’ll turn 30 next summer meaning an eight-year deal would likely come with several seasons of steep decline for the smooth-skating defenseman.

There’s also already the presence of Miro Heiskanen on the roster, making $8.45MM of his own for most of the next decade. Dallas would become just the second team in the league with two defensemen making at least $8MM per season, joining San Jose who has had their own salary cap issues because of the massive deals for Erik Karlsson and Brent Burns.

If Klingberg doesn’t get the deal he wants from Dallas, he’ll enter free agency as a highly-coveted asset, but he then wouldn’t be able to sign an eight-year pact. Only the Stars can offer him a deal more than seven years in length, unless they trade his rights at some point.

Focus Turns To Adam Fox After McAvoy Contract

October 16, 2021 at 7:40 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 17 Comments

When a player approaches unrestricted free agency, there are many things for him to consider when it comes to where his hockey journey will continue. Market, team strength, coaching staff, and potential linemates are all considered, which sometimes leads to a (small) haircut or a (not as small) overpay in terms of overall salary. When a player is approaching restricted free agency, things are a bit different.

While technically there are options for an RFA to play overseas or chase down an offer sheet to change markets, in practice it’s basically only negotiating with one team. That means many of those factors disappear, and the biggest thing brought up in negotiations is contract comparables.

On Friday, the Boston Bruins signed Charlie McAvoy to a massive eight-year, $76MM contract extension that kicks in after his short-term bridge deal expires next summer. That negotiation had a direct comparable to work from; Zach Werenski, also heading into the final season of his bridge deal, signed a six-year $57.5MM deal earlier this summer. Among the other recent contracts that were likely considered were Cale Makar’s six-year, $54MM extension, Miro Heiskanen’s eight-year, $67.6MM deal, and even Quinn Hughes’ six-year $47.1MM agreement signed just a few weeks ago. The massive deals for Seth Jones, Darnell Nurse, and Dougie Hamilton are all buying out UFA years, so aren’t quite as important when it comes to young defensemen who are still in their RFA seasons.

Almost before the ink was dry on McAvoy’s deal, hockey fans and writers were all looking around for who his deal will impact the most when the next round of negotiations come up. The answer may be Adam Fox who is currently eligible for an extension and will be an RFA for the first time next summer.

There’s no doubt about it, the Rangers are going to have to pay up for the reigning Norris Trophy winner. On Sportsnet radio yesterday, Elliotte Friedman expressed as much:

I think it’s a massive number. I think the Rangers know it’s going to be a massive number, and they’ll get it done. Will it be the biggest contract by a defenseman? It sure could be. The Rangers have to be looking at these guys around $9.5MM (AAV) and going ’that might not cut it here.’

While Friedman doesn’t suggest he has any information on the status of the negotiations between Fox and the Rangers, he’s not the only one wondering about the defensemen’s next contract. Mollie Walker of the New York Post writes about Fox’s great start—a goal and an assist in the first two games of the season while logging more than 23 minutes in each–including how it will affect his next deal. Colin Stephenson of Newsday wonders if it’s possible to get a “hometown discount” from the Jericho, New York native, in order to allow the Rangers to assemble a strong supporting cast. Finally, Adam Kennedy of The Hockey News wonders aloud what everyone is thinking, in his column headlined “Is Adam Fox Worth $10 Million Per Season?”

Of the 14 players who carry a cap hit of at least $10MM next season, just two of them are defensemen. Erik Karlsson, the league’s highest-paid defender, signed his eight-year, $92MM just before hitting unrestricted free agency. Drew Doughty’s eight-year, $88MM deal also bought out only UFA years. To this point in the cap era, no defenseman has crossed the $10MM per season threshold on their second contract, as forwards Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, and Mitch Marner have.

If Fox is the first, it will also make the Rangers the fifth team in the league to carry at least two $10MM+ contracts simultaneously (the Florida Panthers will become the fourth when Aleksander Barkov’s extension kicks in next season, joining Sergei Bobrovsky). Not only that, but they also have Mika Zibanejad and Jacob Trouba combining for $16.5MM.

There’s certainly no guarantee he does eclipse that mark, and any discussion of it assumes that he is signing a long-term deal with New York. But things will certainly get tricky when it comes to a salary cap that is only expected to jump $1MM per year until 2025. Whatever it ends up being, there’s a good chance any future defenseman will have a new upper-limit comparable to work from when their own negotiations come around down the road.

Zach Aston-Reese Activated From COVID Protocol

October 16, 2021 at 4:45 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Zach Aston-Reese could make his season debut for the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight, after being activated from the COVID protocol earlier today. It was nearly three weeks ago that Aston-Reese first tested positive for COVID-19, but after returning he ended up back on the list a few days ago. With Bryan Rust’s placement on injured reserve, the team has the roster spot available to activate Aston-Reese and potentially put him into the lineup for tonight’s game.

Though technically listed as a game-time decision, Aston-Reese’s return would be a nice boost for a Penguins team that has already secured three out of four available points this season. The 27-year-old forward has shown an ability to slot in almost anywhere in the lineup, even jumping on Sidney Crosby’s first-line wing at times. He doesn’t provide a ton of offense but did register a career-high with nine goals in 45 games last season.

The Penguins started the year with both Aston-Reese and Jake Guentzel out after positive COVID tests, but had the latter back in action against the Florida Panthers on Thursday. With Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and now Rust out, they will need all hands on deck as they welcome in Marc-Andre Fleury and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Gabriel Landeskog Suspended Two Games

October 14, 2021 at 5:04 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

The Department of Player Safety has handed out the first suspension of the regular season, banning Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche for the next two games. Landeskog delivered a hard check to Chicago Blackhawks forward Kirby Dach in last night’s game. As the accompanying video explains:

It is important to note that Landeskog is in control of this play. Dach is on one knee facing the wall, and is defenseless in this situation. Sliding along the ice with limited ability to evade or brace for contact. Landeskog has enough time to recognize the situation his opponent is in and rather than avoiding contact or minimizing the force of the hit, chooses to drive the vulnerable Dach into the wall with considerable force. It is the combination of the defenseless position Dach is in, the player’s dangerous distance from the boards at the time of contact, and the speed and force of the hit that caused this hit to rise to the level of supplementary discipline.

Notably, Dach did not suffer a serious injury on the play but Landeskog does have three suspensions on his record already. Though he is no longer considered a repeat offender in terms of salary forfeiture, those suspensions are taken into account when deciding suspension length.

The team was already without Nathan MacKinnon last night, who is still in the COVID protocol after a positive test result. They now may be without both for Saturday night’s match against the St. Louis Blues. Landeskog will also miss next Tuesday’s match against the Washington Capitals.

Latest On Jack Eichel

October 14, 2021 at 4:06 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 19 Comments

It appeared as though there was some momentum toward a Jack Eichel trade a week ago, but things have gone quiet once again on one of the biggest stories in the NHL. With the season underway there is no lack of headlines and narratives to take the attention of hockey fans across the league, but every one of them is still keeping one eye on the Buffalo Sabres and their malcontent star. Today, Emily Kaplan on ESPN’s The Point explained the current situation with regards to Eichel:

Where we stand now is there are five teams still in on Jack Eichel, and those are teams who believe they can fit his they can fit his $10MM salary into their cap situation. Maybe that means moving some contracts or whatever. All of those teams though have agreed Jack Eichel will get the disk replacement surgery that he wants.

If there is a trade in the near future, Eichel still faces a major neck surgery that will keep him out of the NHL for several months. That makes it extremely difficult for any contender to acquire the Sabres former captain, though easier to swallow if it’s soon enough that he could potentially return for the end of the season. The one thing to consider when it comes to cap situations is that Eichel’s contract will be able to be moved to long-term injured reserve, though if he’s back before the playoffs the team would need to have the applicable room to activate him.

There’s also the factor of Buffalo’s cap, which will need money coming back the other way to stay above the lower limit. Sending money the other way seems likely for any team acquiring a long-term $10MM cap hit, though it still makes things more complicated.

Interestingly in these cases, a quiet period often shows up as the talks get more serious and the teams involved don’t want any leaking information to spoil the negotiation. It’s not clear if that’s the case with Eichel, but with five teams still interested and willing to greenlight his preferred surgery, it seems like a resolution of some sort is still possible in the near future.
