West Notes: Coyotes, Carrier, Duhaime

March 4, 2023 at 7:00 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 3 Comments

The Arizona Coyotes made one of the biggest deals of the season when they sent defenseman Jakob Chychrun to the Ottawa Senators for a trio of draft picks. The Coyotes will receive a first-round pick in 2023 and a pair of future second-round picks. While the initial ask was certainly higher, Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong explained his thought process to Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports.

Armstrong stated he valued the Senators first-round pick higher than most other teams next two first-round picks. The Senators are fighting for a playoff spot, but are on the outside looking in and have to leapfrog a handful of teams down the stretch to get in. If they miss, the Coyotes are guaranteed a top-16 pick which, paired with two future second-round picks, has more value than two first-round picks that would be closer to 30th overall. Armstrong said he believes this pick will be somewhere between 6-18 in a deep 2023 draft, and that was ultimately why he pulled the trigger on the Chychrun trade.

  • Per a team release, the Vegas Golden Knights will be without William Carrier for the foreseeable future. He is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury after leaving the Golden Knights 4-3 shootout win in the first period. Carrier is having a productive season with 16 goals and 25 points in 56 games but now joins Mark Stone, Nolan Patrick, Robin Lehner, Logan Thompson and Laurent Brossoit on the sidelines in Vegas.
  • Minnesota Wild winger Brandon Duhaime won’t play today due to injury according to Joe Smith of The Athletic relays (Twitter link). He will be re-evaluated when the team returns from their trip after tonight’s contest in Calgary. The 25-year-old has seven goals and an assist in 39 games so far.

Flyers, Blue Jackets Discussed Hayes Trade

March 4, 2023 at 5:50 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 2 Comments

Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek were on Sportsnet’s 32 Thoughts podcast (20:00 mark) and had some interesting tidbits about deals that did not happen. One of them was the Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets briefly talked about Kevin Hayes.

Hayes is a 30-year-old center who has three more years left on his contact with a cap hit just north of $7MM. Though he is having a productive season with 49 points in 61 games played, he drew the ire of head coach John Tortorella earlier this season and was made a healthy scratch. With the Flyers struggling in the standings, they may be eager to move out some cap space, leading to the Hayes talks.

Marek said the two teams did engage in “soft talks” and he would not be surprised if this was something both sides revisited in the offseason. Friedman also mentioned that he could see negotiations ramping up once again at the NHL Draft.

The Blue Jackets opened up plenty of cap space for next season when they traded Jakub Voracek to the Arizona Coyotes. Voracek and sixth-round pick were swapped for goaltender Jon Gillies which gives the Blue Jackets $8.25MM more cap space in 2023-24. That is more than enough to bring in Hayes.

Hayes would also fit well alongside Johnny Gaudreau. The pair played three seasons together at Boston College, culminating in a Hobey Baker Award for Gaudreau when he scored 80 points in 40 games in 2013-14. Hayes had 27 goals and 65 points in 40 games that season. Gaudreau is in the first year of a seven-year contract with an annual $9.75MM cap hit. He has 15 goals and 55 points in 60 games, but the Blue Jackets sit at the bottom of the NHL standings.

These talks were only preliminary, but it would be interesting to see Hayes and Gaudreau reunited at the NHL level. Definitely something worth keeping an eye on in the offseason.

Anaheim, Buffalo Complete Minor League Deal

March 3, 2023 at 1:37 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan Leave a Comment

According to a team release, the Anaheim Ducks and Buffalo Sabres have swapped a couple of minor league players. The Ducks have acquired Chase Priskie while the Sabres picked up Austin Strand.

Priskie is a 26-year-old right-defenseman who has scored four goals and nine points in 42 games with the Rochester Americans this season. He is in his fourth AHL season after a stellar college career at Quinnipiac and has played four career NHL games.

Strand is also a 26-year-old right-defenseman. He has scored two goals and eight points in 46 games with the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. The 6-foot-3 and 215 pound defender was called up to play five games with the Ducks this season and has played 26 NHL games in his career.

Minnesota Wild Acquire Oskar Sundqvist

March 3, 2023 at 1:25 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 1 Comment

The Minnesota Wild have acquired forward Oskar Sundqvist from the Detroit Red Wings, in exchange for a 2023 fourth-round pick.

Sundqvist will add some depth to the Wild’s bottom six, and replaces Jordan Greenway in the lineup. Greenway was dealt to the Buffalo Sabres just minutes before the Wild acquired Sundqvist.

Sundqvist is a defensive-minded center who has scored seven goals and 21 points for the Red Wings this season. He helped the St. Louis Blues win a Stanley Cup in 2019 as a fourth-line center. The Swedish forward scored four goals and nine points in 25 playoff games that spring.

The 28-year-old is in the final year of a four-year contract that pays him $2.75MM per season. At 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds he adds size, defensive ability and a bit of scoring to the bottom of the Wild’s lineup.

Shayna Goldman of The Athletic was first to report the deal, while TSN’s Darren Dreger reported that the return to Detroit would be a draft pick, with Joe Smith of The Athletic clarifying that it would be a fourth-rounder.

Pittsburgh Penguins To Acquire Dmitry Kulikov

March 3, 2023 at 12:44 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 2 Comments

The Pittsburgh Penguins are going to acquire Dmitry Kulikov from the Anaheim Ducks. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun is reporting that the two teams are putting the final pieces in place to complete the deal.

Emily Kaplan of ESPN reports the return for Anaheim will be a third-round pick and a player. Jeff Marek of Sportsnet added that the Ducks will be retaining a portion of Kulikov’s salary. LeBrun reports that the player heading back to Anaheim will be Brock McGinn.

Kulikov will add some depth to the Penguins defense, and has three goals and 15 points in 61 games this season. He is a pending unrestricted free agent at season’s end and has a cap hit of $2.25MM. The 32-year-old defender is a veteran of 866 NHL games, giving the Pens some valuable experience to round out their blue line.

McGinn is a gritty winger who is in the second season of a four-year contract that has a cap hit of $2.75MM. He passed through waivers earlier this week and was assigned to the AHL. The 29-year-old winger scored ten goals and 16 points in 60 games for the Penguins this season.

This trade will open up some cap flexibility for the Penguins moving forward. Kulikov’s deal expires at season’s end, but the Pens get out from the final two years of McGinn’s contract, giving them an extra $2.25MM to spend in the coming years.

Canucks Deadline Notes: Miller, Garland, Turcotte

March 3, 2023 at 11:43 am CDT | by Ken MacMillan 1 Comment

The Vancouver Canucks already made a minor trade on deadline day, sending Curtis Lazar to the New Jersey Devils for a 2024 fourth-round pick. They are certainly a team in transition and it sounds like they are actively looking to make a few more deals today. Farhan Lalji of TSN reports there is talk of J.T. Miller’s name being out there in trade talks today.

The gritty forward has already signed an eight-year extension that begins next season, but has quickly fallen out of favor with the Canucks. He has 20 goals and 54 points in 60 games this season, but the Canucks are looking to shake things up.

  • Jacob Stoller of The Hockey News reports that Conor Garland’s name is also out there in trade talks. He says that the team is interested in acquiring an effective NHL player in exchange for Garland, and do not want to deal him just for draft picks. The 26-year-old winger has three more years left on his contract with a cap hit of $4.95MM.
  • As for who the Canucks may be interested in acquiring, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports they have checked in on Alex Turcotte. Turcotte was the fifth-overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft and has 14 points in 24 AHL games for the Ontario Reign this season.

Bruins Injury Notes: Marchand, Hall, Foligno

March 3, 2023 at 11:15 am CDT | by Ken MacMillan 7 Comments

The Boston Bruins have been active in the days leading up to the trade deadline. They have already acquired defenseman Dmitry Orlov and winger Garnet Hathaway from the Washington Capitals as well as Tyler Bertuzzi from the Detroit Red Wings. The reinforcements may be needed as a few players are injured, but the team did get some good news when it comes to one of their best forwards.

Brad Marchand left Thursday night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres with an injury. According to Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic, the star two-way winger avoided serious injury and will be available for tomorrow night’s game. Marchand has 53 points in 53 games this season, so this news is a sigh of relief for the team at the top of the NHL standings.

  • The news was not all good for the Bruins. Matt Porter of the Boston Globe reports Taylor Hall is going to need a second opinion to diagnose his knee injury. A timeline for his return is not available but Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports it could be in the four week range.
  • Seravalli also mentions the injury to Nick Foligno could be long term. In fact, the winger may miss the rest of the regular season. It is not ideal to have players missing long stretches of time with injuries, but if Foligno is out until the playoffs, the Bruins can place him on LTIR and free up $3.8MM in cap space to use before today’s trade deadline.

AHL Tracker: 03/03/2023

March 3, 2023 at 9:53 am CDT | by Ken MacMillan Leave a Comment

Trade deadline day is here, which means it will be a busy day for deals in the National Hockey League. It will also be a busy day for transactions between the NHL and AHL. Players must be on an AHL roster today at 2 PM CT to be eligible for the AHL playoffs.

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have sent Darren Raddysh to the AHL. The 27-year-old right defenseman is having a great season for the Syracuse Crunch. He has scored 13 goals and 50 points in 50 AHL contests and will now be eligible to continue helping the team in the postseason.
  • The Boston Bruins have sent down Jakub Lauko to the Providence Bruins. The 22-year-old forward has ten goals and 16 points in 34 AHL games this season. He has also suited up for 12 NHL games with the Bruins, scoring three goals and five points.
  • Goalie Keith Kinkaid is on his way up to the Colorado Avalanche, per the team. It’s his first stint with Colorado in the NHL since the Avalanche acquired him from the Boston Bruins last week. Kinkaid hasn’t played a game yet with the organization, as he hasn’t seen any action with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles. However, he appeared in one NHL game with the Bruins earlier this season, allowing just one goal and recording a win.
  • Forwards Drew O’Connor and Drake Caggiula were sent to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins today, per a release from Pittsburgh. O’Connor and Caggiula have both been important offensive forces with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, both hovering close to a point per game. While at least O’Connor will likely return to the NHL roster after the deadline, they’ll both be crucial parts of any playoff run in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
  • The Chicago Blackhawks have sent David Gust, Isaak Phillips, and Brett Seney to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, according to Charlie Roumeliotis of NBCS Chicago. They needed to make room for newcomers Nikita Zaitsev, who has cleared immigration, and Anders Bjork, recalled today.
  • The Washington Capitals have recalled Vincent Iorio and Gabriel Carlsson, according to Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic. Dylan McIlrath has been returned to the minor leagues to make room.
  • The Calgary Flames have sent two young forwards down to the Calgary Wranglers. According to Ryan Pike of Sportsnet 960, Jakob Pelletier and Walker Duehr have been re-assigned to the AHL. The pair seem to have earned an NHL roster spot with their play, but are now eligible to help the Wranglers in the AHL postseason.
  • The Montreal Canadiens have completed a paper transaction with Rafael Harvey-Pinard and Jesse Ylonen, making them eligible for the AHL playoffs. They’ll stay with the big club for now, though, as Montreal plays out the stretch and continues to develop their youth.
  • Vancouver has done the same, sending Aatu Raty, Christian Wolanin, Noah Juulsen, and Vasily Podkolzin down, and recalling the latter three. Phillip Di Giuseppe is up instead of Raty, meaning the young forward will stay with the Abbotsford Canucks down the stretch.
  • Dakota Mermis has been reassigned to the Iowa Wild, after the Minnesota Wild made some moves today. With John Klingberg coming in, Mermis will return to the minor leagues where he has 24 points in 46 games for Iowa this season.
  • Zac Dalpe has been returned to the AHL, giving the Charlotte Checkers their captain back for a playoff run. The Checkers sit third in the Atlantic Division with a 30-18-5 record, and Dalpe is a big part of that success.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have recalled Milos Kelemen, Jean-Sebastien Dea, Vladislav Kolyachonok, and newcomer Michael Kesselring. After so many players were sent out of town in the last few days, plenty of playing time is available in Arizona.

This page will be updated throughout the day.

Deadline Notes: Greenway, van Riemsdyk, Canucks

March 3, 2023 at 9:30 am CDT | by Ken MacMillan 3 Comments

The Minnesota Wild are still taking calls on Jordan Greenway, but the offers have not been enough to entice them to make a deal yet. Darren Dreger of TSN reported that the Wild are receiving interest in the young winger but are waiting for their asking price to be met.

Greenway has two more years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $3MM. The 26-year-old forward brings plenty of size at 6’6″ but little scoring this season. He set a career-high with 32 points in just 56 games in 2020-21 but has just two goals and seven points in 45 games this season. The Wild would like to move out his contract but don’t want to give him away for nothing.

  • The Washington Capitals have been active leading up to the trade deadline. Dmitry Orlov, Garnet Hathaway, and Lars Eller have already been dealt with, but it sounds like pending unrestricted free agent Trevor van Riemsdyk is not going anywhere today. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet has reported the Capitals are keeping the right-shot defenseman due to their injury situation. He mentions the potential of a post-deadline contract extension but nothing is confirmed at this time.
  • The Vancouver Canucks may be working on something with the Florida Panthers. According to Rick Dhaliwal of the Donnie and Dhali radio show in Vancouver, the Canucks are working the phones and have been in talks with the Panthers. He also mentions it sounds like it is not a major deal, so don’t expect one of the Canucks big contracts to be heading to the Panthers.

Trade Deadline Primer: New York Rangers

February 25, 2023 at 8:11 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 9 Comments

The trade deadline is inching closer and is now less than a week away. Where does each team stand, and what moves should they be looking to make? We continue our look around the league with the New York Rangers.

The New York Rangers went through a roster re-tool for four seasons before launching back into contender status last season. A Vezina Trophy campaign from goaltender Igor Shesterkin, a near Norris Trophy winning season from Adam Fox and a career high in points from Artemi Panarin carried the team all the way to the Eastern Conference Final. They pulled ahead in that series 2-0 before losing four consecutive low-scoring close games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Rangers headed into this season with high expectations, and are among a pack of six Eastern Conference teams that appear to be the league’s best. They will continue to fight with the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils for the Metropolitan Division crown down the stretch and whoever emerges from that battle in the first two playoff rounds will likely face either the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs or Lightning in the Eastern Conference Final.

It is going to be a battle of wills to get to the Stanley Cup Final from the eastern side and the Rangers have already begun to load up. They acquired Vladimir Tarasenko and Niko Mikkola from the St. Louis Blues for a conditional 2023 first-round pick, Sammy Blais, Hunter Skinner and a 2024 fourth-round pick.

They also moved Vitali Kravtsov to the Vancouver Canucks for Will Lockwood and a seveth-round pick in 2026. Jake Leschyshyn was also put on waivers earlier today. Both of these moves seem to be made to maximize the team’s cap space for an upcoming trade.

2024: NYR 1st, NYR 2nd, NYR 3rd, NYR 5th, NYR 6th, NYR 7th

Trade Chips

The Rangers 2023 first-round pick is tied up in a conditional trade for Tarasenko. The Blues will get the later of the Rangers pick or the Dallas Stars first-round pick that was acquired for Nils Lundkvist. Either way, they still have a 2023 first-round pick and their own 2024 first-round pick as well as their second-round picks in 2023 and 2024.

Brennan Othmann was the Rangers first-round pick in 2021. He is having a great season in the Ontario Hockey League, where he has scored 24 goals and 55 points in 44 games for the Peterborough Petes. He was solid at the past two World Junior Championships, scoring a combined 12 points in 13 games for Canada and winning a pair of gold medals. If the Rangers are going to add another big name, Othmann would allow them to add just about anyone on the market.

Will Cuylle is a 21-year-old left winger who is playing his first AHL season. He has scored 17 goals and 26 points in 48 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack after a tremendous Junior career. He was taken in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft and with all the wingers likely to be with the Rangers long term, like Panarin, Chris Kreider, Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko, the Rangers could afford to move Cuylle.

Matthew Robertson is a promising young defenceman who is going to have a hard time finding a full-time role with the Rangers. The 21-year-old has a nice mix of size and skill, but the Rangers already have a deep crop of blueliners. At 6-foot-3 and 211 pounds, Robertson is tough enough to defend his own zone and has 20 points in 48 AHL games, showing a bit of an offensive side as well. Rebuilding teams love young NHL-ready defenders and Robertson fits that description.

Other Potential Trade Chips: Zac Jones, Adam Sykora, Bryce McConnell-Barker

Team Needs

1) Top-six winger: The Rangers have already added Tarasenko and he is playing on a line with Panarin and Mika Zibanejad. They also have a tremendous “kid line” as their third line with Filip Chytil between Lafreniere and Kakko. Vincent Trocheck is playing on a line with Chris Kreider and Jimmy Vesey. The odd-man out here would be Vesey who has 21 points in 58 games. The Rangers are heavily rumored to be in on Patrick Kane, and he would round out the team’s top six perfectly.

2) Left Defenceman: The Rangers have a big question mark hovering over them now as defenceman Ryan Lindgren was injured in today’s game. If he is out long term, the team could place him on LTIR and add a player matching his cap hit of $3MM. Even if he is not out long term, the team could add a depth piece on defence, as any contender likes to do at this time of year. They are certainly not lacking on the back end with Lindgren, Fox, Jacob Trouba, K’Andre Miller, Mikkola and Braden Schneider, but picking up a veteran who can fill in for injuries would be helpful.
