Wild Injury Notes: Klingberg, Duhaime, Reaves

Joe Smith of The Athletic is reporting that John Klingberg will re-join the Minnesota Wild after missing the past three games with an upper body injury. Klingberg came over from the Anaheim Ducks at the trade deadline and has a goal and three assists in nine games since joining the Wild. Smith went onto say that it appears that Klingberg will serve in the top-4 and play alongside Jon Merrill. The Wild took five of a possible six points with Klingberg out of the lineup but will certainly welcome the offensive firepower that he adds to the backend.

Klingberg has had a nightmarish season thus far. He didn’t find that long term deal he was hoping for last summer in free agency and opted to bet on himself and sign in Anaheim for a single season. This move has largely been a failure as Klingberg struggled mightily with the Ducks notching just 24 points in 50 games. While he has struggled to this point in the season, he still has an opportunity to prove his worth with the Wild. Minnesota has had a tremendous season and with the acquisition of Klingberg, one has to assume that they see themselves as a contender to come out of a wide open Western Conference.

In other Wild injury news:

  • The Athletic’s Joe Smith is also reporting that winger Brandon Duhaime won’t play this evening due to an undisclosed illness. Duhaime is in his second season with the Wild and has nine points in 44 games, including eight goals. While Duhaime won’t fill the scoresheet, he does add an element of grit that the Minnesota will miss this evening when they do battle with their division rival. Duhaime is third on the team in hits with 126 hits on the season while averaging just over 10 minutes of ice time per game. The Wild sit one point up on Colorado for the division lead in the Central.
  • Speaking of grit, Ryan Reaves also won’t be dressing tonight as he will be sidelined with what is being described as an upper body injury. Reaves left the Wild’s 5-1 win over the Seattle Kraken on Monday night and did not return. Little is known about Reaves injury, but with he and Duhaime on the shelf, it will make for a much easier night for Avalanche defensemen. Reaves is second on the Wild in hits this season with 134 hits in 54 games and has been an emotional catalyst for Minnesota since coming over from the New York Rangers in a mid-season trade. With Reaves and Duhaime out for tonight, and Kirill Kaprizov also sidelined, the Wild will be forced to play with 11 forwards and seven defensemen in a crucial game. Joe Smith tweeted that Alex Goligoski could take some shifts at forward to offset the injuries.

Evening Notes: Senators, Toews, Hall

TSN Insider Chris Johnston is reporting that an interesting detail has emerged in the sale process for the Ottawa Senators. Johnston says that the Algonquins of Ontario are part of the First Nations group bidding on the Senators, and they currently have a land claim on the piece of property at LeBreton Flats that could be the future site of the next Ottawa Senators arena.

LeBreton Flats is the property in downtown Ottawa that has long been discussed as the most desirable spot to put the Senators next building. The land is currently run federally, meaning that should the First Nations group win the bidding for the Senators, some interesting opportunities could open up. Graham Robertson and the group he is partnered with met with Senators management today and remain in pursuit of the club in what is now the second phase of the sale process.

In other news around the NHL:

  • Chris Johnston is also reporting that Jonathan Toews is attempting to make a comeback this season for the Chicago Blackhawks. Toews is an unrestricted free agent on July 1st and has hinted at retirement as he has dealt with several health issues the past few seasons. Toews has played just 46 games this season, but has been effective when in the lineup with 28 points. Should Toews be able to dress for Chicago it would be an uplifting story to end what has been an otherwise nightmarish season for both player and team. Chicago is mired in one of its worst seasons in decades as they begin what is sure to be a painful rebuild over the next few seasons. For Toews, he would get what is likely to be a final send off after an era of Chicago hockey that saw the captain raise the Stanley Cup on three separate occasions.
  • An interesting conundrum is developing with the Boston Bruins as Taylor Hall is getting closer to returning from injury. Hall has already been skating with Boston for a few days and TSN Insider Darren Dreger has said that sources indicate he is close to a return. The issue is that the Bruins don’t have any cap space for Hall to get back into the lineup. Boston loaded up at the trade deadline with the additions of Tyler Bertuzzi, Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway and have precious little cap space left to facilitate Hall’s return to the ice. This is sure to be an something to keep an eye on these next few days, and it is something other teams will certainly take notice of as we are less than three weeks away from the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs, a time in which Boston no longer must be salary cap compliant.

Goaltender Mitchell Gibson Signs With Washington Capitals

TSN’s Frank Seravalli is reporting that Harvard goaltender Mitchell Gibson has decided to forgo a year at Harvard to sign a one-year deal with the Washington Capitals. Gibson’s deal is technically an entry level deal because of his age, meaning that he will likely sign an amateur tryout agreement with Washington’s AHL affiliate the Hershey Bears for the remainder of this season.

The 23-year-old netminder has flourished in the NCAA since being Washington’s fourth round pick in the 2018 NHL entry draft. This past season he posted an 18-7-2 record with a .919 save percentage and 2.25 goals against average. Gibson’s stellar numbers led to him being named a semi-finalist for the Mike Richter Award as the nation’s top goaltender.

The Capitals currently have one of the worst prospect pools in the NHL, but they have moved up the farm system rankings in recent years. While Gibson is hardly an A level prospect at his age, he does help Washington re-stock the cupboard after years of emptying it to compete for Stanley Cups during the Alex Ovechkin era.

Washington will likely give Gibson plenty of time to develop in Hershey. Goaltenders tend to be late bloomers and Washington has very little urgency to rush him with Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren still under contract for at least the next two seasons.

Troy Terry Out For Personal Reasons

The Anaheim Ducks have announced that Troy Terry will miss tonight’s game against the Colorado Avalanche for personal reasons. Terry left the Ducks game Saturday against the St. Louis Blues after scoring a goal and an assist in just over 14 minutes of play. His abrupt exit from the game led many to speculate about an injury, but it was announced yesterday that he left the game to attend to a personal matter.

In his place Frank Vatrano will return to the Ducks lineup tonight. Vatrano was also recently out of the lineup for personal reasons but will once again join the Ducks forward ranks. The 29-year-old came over as an off-season free agent and is just three points shy of tying his career high of 39 points from 2018-19. Vatrano will also be looking to pass the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his career.

Terry is one of the few bright spots on a team that has had an abysmal season in Anaheim. The Ducks sit 29th in the league in total points and are already mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. For his part Terry has delivered again this season after a massive breakout last year. Terry has 21 goals and 35 assists in 66 games this season after having 67 points in 75 games last year.

The Ducks opted to wait until after the season to negotiate a new contract with Terry, who is in the final year of his three-year deal. For his part Terry has likely secured himself a big pay day with his play the last two seasons. He is making just $1.55MM this year, is arbitration eligible, and just a few years away from unrestricted agency. Given all these factors, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see Terry triple or even quadruple his salary this summer.

Gary Bettman Discusses Ottawa Senators Sale Process

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman met with reporters today in Ottawa prior to the Florida Panthers taking on the Ottawa Senators. The Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch is reporting that Bettman told reporters that there are six bidders in phase two of the Senators sale process, and several of them are strong groups.

Postmedia has reported several times that the Senators sale process likely won’t be completed until late in April, but beyond that it could take into the early summer for all the paperwork and approvals to be completed for the sale. Bettman did comment today that this phase of the process could take up to six weeks which would likely push it into early May. He also added that finalizing any agreement would take at least two to three months leading him to speculate that it could be mid to late summer for a deal to be complete. Bettman added that in the second phase the bidders will be coming to Ottawa to meet the front office, tour the building, and do more due diligence than in the first round of bidding.

Several of the bidders will be in Ottawa over the next few weeks, including arguably the most high-profile bidder The Remington Group. The Markham based group is led by Christopher Bratty, along with the owner of the OHL’s Oshawa Generals Rocco Tullio. It also includes Canadian-born actor Ryan Reynolds.

The NHL and Bettman must be happy with the level of interest this process has garnered for a team that has struggled to be relevant for more than a half decade. It has been reported in several media outlets that the final sale price could be in the range $900MM to $1BN. Not bad for a team that is just two decades removed from being bought out of bankruptcy, and has struggled both on and off the ice for quite some time.

Bettman kept his cards close to his chest and offered precious little in terms of new information. One thing he did say that should be music to the ears of Senators fans was that “The one thing that everybody should be comfortable with, and I’ve said this repeatedly, if this team is moving, the only place it’s moving is downtown. It’s not leaving Ottawa. The Senators will be here no matter who buys the club.”

Flyers Injury Notes: Deslauriers, Tippett, Couturier, Konecny

Charlie O’Connor of The Athletic is reporting that Nicolas Deslauriers of the Philadelphia Flyers didn’t attend today’s optional practice. Deslauriers didn’t play in the Flyers 5-4 win over the Minnesota Wild last night and is listed as day-to-day with an upper body injury. Deslauriers was supposed to be re-evaluated today, but no word yet if he will dress in Philadelphia’s game tomorrow evening against the Detroit Red Wings.

The 32-year-old Deslauriers has five goals and six assists in 70 games this season while playing just over ten minutes a night on the fourth line. His signing last summer was one of the more baffling moves that any team made as the Flyers elected to give a four-year contract with a modified no trade clause to a player that has never been able to score or remain in the lineup.

  • Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia is reporting that Owen Tippett has been banged up this week and didn’t attend Flyers practice today. Tippett left practice earlier in the week, and when asked about it coach John Tortorella said Tippett was “Not serious, nicked up.” Tippett has taken massive strides this season for the Flyers after coming over from the Florida Panthers in last year’s Claude Giroux trade. Tippett has a career high 39 points in 66 games and has looked every bit the top-6 winger the Flyers hoped they were getting when they dealt their former captain.
  • Olivia Reiner of The Philadelphia Inquirer tweeted that Sean Couturier and Travis Konecny were both present at Flyers practice today and wearing regular contact jerseys. Couturier hasn’t played in over a year after having two back surgeries in less than nine months. The 30-year-old center has had a long road to get back and while it is encouraging to see him practicing with the team once again, it is unknown if he returns to game action in what has been a lost season for the club. Konecny on the other hand has been out since suffering an upper body injury in late February in a game against the Calgary Flames. Konecny had been having a stellar season with 54 points in 52 games before he was put on injured reserve. It was a bounce back season for the 26-year-old after struggling to score in the two seasons previous. Should Konecny return to the lineup soon, he will likely eclipse the 30-goal plateau for the first time in his career.

Injury Notes: Chychrun, Zadina, Tanev, Stone

Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen is reporting that Jakob Chychrun of the Ottawa Senators is doubtful to play Saturday against the New Jersey Devils. Ottawa head coach DJ Smith was quoted by TSN’s Claire Hanna as saying that Chychrun, “tugged something there a little bit, we’ll see how he reacts to treatment here.”

Chychrun left Ottawa’s 7-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning yesterday after taking a hit in the third period. He was in obvious discomfort as he skated to the Senators bench before heading down the runway to the locker room. Smith said after the game that he didn’t believe it was an injury, but rather that it was cramping.

Since coming over to Ottawa in the March 1st trade, Chychrun has two goals and three assists in 12 games while averaging 21 minutes of ice time a game. Ottawa can ill afford to lose their prized trade deadline acquisition as they are running out of runway with just ten games left in the season. Ottawa sits five points back of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference and will be in tough tomorrow as they do battle with the Devils in New Jersey.

Other injury notes from around the NHL:

  • The Detroit Red Wings announced today that Filip Zadina is day-to-day with a lower body injury and will not be available for Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Zadina also missed over three months earlier this season with a lower body injury after blocking a shot in early November against the New York Islanders. It’s been a tough season for the former Halifax Moosehead, he has struggled to stay on the ice, and when he has played, he has been largely ineffective with just seven points in 30 games. The 23-year-old had a career year last season with 24 points in 74 games but has yet to live up to the expectations the Red Wings had for him when they took him sixth overall in 2018.
  • Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg is reporting that Chris Tanev didn’t practice with the Calgary Flames this morning after missing their previous two games with a lower body injury. The 33-year-old Toronto native has 13 points in 61 games this season and has averaged over 20 minutes a night in ice time. Calgary is a long shot to make the post season with just nine games remaining on the schedule. They sit six points back of Winnipeg for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference and would need to leapfrog Nashville who have 12 games remaining. Calgary can ill afford to lose Tanev’s defensive prowess as they battle down to the wire.
  • In a bit of good news for Calgary, injured defenseman Michael Stone has started skating on his own. Stone has missed the Flames last 17 games with a lower body injury that he suffered in late February. Stone has five goals and five assists in 46 games this season while averaging just over 13 minutes a night in ice time. He is hardly an option to replace Tanev should his injury be long term, but Stone could offer some additional depth for the Flames as they head into the final pivotal weeks of the season.

Cutter Gauthier Returning To NCAA For Sophomore Season

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet is reporting that Philadelphia Flyers 2022 fifth overall pick Cutter Gauthier is headed back to Boston College for his sophomore season. Friedman tweeted that he doesn’t view this move as a surprise for the young forward, given that this is likely the best scenario for his development.

Gauthier returns to a club where he played mostly center last season on his way to 16 goals and 21 assists in 31 games. His 37 points were good enough to lead the Eagles in scoring and earn him a Hockey East Third Team All-Star selection.

Gauthier was a very coveted prospect at last year’s draft, and it is easy to see why. He is a center who can skate with good size standing 6’2″ and weighing 194 pounds. He is seen by scouts as a player that plays with a lot of pace who can burn defenders with a wide assortment of offensive tools. While his work with the puck is impressive, his work away from the puck is also quite good. He is seen as a player who is dangerous along the boards and can disrupt cycles and win puck battles.

Gauthier was born in Sweden when his father Sean Gauthier was playing goalie in the Swedish Elite League. However, he grew up playing hockey in the United States after his family moved back to North America. He has represented Team USA internationally on many occasions including the 2022 Under-18 World Championships where he had nine points in six games to help the Americans win a silver medal.

Edmonton Oilers Sign Carl Berglund

The Edmonton Oilers have announced the signing of Swedish forward Carl Berglund to a two-year entry level contract. Berglund spent the year playing his senior NCAA season with UMass Lowell where he had 12 goals and 15 assists in 36 games. His two-year deal will cover the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons; however, Berglund will report to Edmonton’s AHL affiliate the Bakersfield Condors after signing an AHL amateur tryout agreement to cover the remainder of this season.

Should Berglund make the Oilers in either of the next two seasons he will have a cap hit of $925K, however should he play in the AHL he would make a salary of $80K. Each season will also see him collect a signing bonus of $92.5K as part of his entry level deal. Not bad for a player who went undrafted just a few years ago.

For his NCAA career Berglund has amassed 36 goals and 53 assists in 114 career games with UMass Lowell. Prior to his college career, the 23-year-old scored 16 points in 37 USHL games and won a Clark Cup with the Sioux Falls Stampede.

Berglund is a late bloomer and could be an interesting prospect for the Oilers farm system. He has good size at 6’2″ and 207 pounds, is good off the rush, and can play center as well as on the wing. It is a good signing for Edmonton as they are able to bring in a young player without having to use any draft capital.

Penguins Injury Notes: Petry, Rust, DeSmith

Rob Rossi of The Athletic is reporting that injured Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Jeff Petry is back skating. He has not practiced with the team but took to the ice after yesterdays practice in Colorado. The Penguins defense has been decimated by injuries in recent days as Petry, Jan Rutta, Dmitry Kulikov and Marcus Pettersson are all sidelined with various ailments. Things have become so dire for the Penguins that even potential call-ups Ty Smith and Xavier Ouellet are hurt as well.

The timing of these injuries could not be worse for Pittsburgh, they are in a dogfight with the Florida Panthers and the New York Islanders for the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins have been forced to dive deep into their AHL lineup to find replacements for their injured rearguards and are now using the Taylor Fedun to fill out their roster. Fedun played Monday night against the Ottawa Senators and was fine in a sheltered role, but should the Penguins defense ever get healthy he would likely be the 12th defenseman.

Petry has not had a great first season in Pittsburgh, he has been in and out of the lineup with various injuries throughout the season. When he has played, he has largely been okay, but with a cap hit of $6.25MM the Penguins can’t afford for him to be just okay. The Michigan native has 26 points in 52 games and has been a valuable part of Marcus Pettersson’s development this season, but he has had trouble at times matching the foot speed of the young forwards on some of Pittsburgh’s Eastern Conference rivals.

In other Penguins injury news:

  • Bryan Rust left yesterday’s Penguins practice in disgust after taking a Jason Zucker shot off his right hand. Rust returned a short time later and no update was provided on the incident. Pittsburgh will not practice today, which means we likely won’t have any updates until their game this evening with the Colorado Avalanche. Rob Rossi did tweet that Rust’s return to the ice for practice appeared to be a good sign. It has been a difficult season for the 30-year-old forward, he has 38 points in 69 games which is well off his near point a game pace from the three previous seasons. He has appeared visibly frustrated in recent weeks, the most obvious instance being in Monday’s game against Ottawa when his failure to clear the zone on a Senators powerplay led to the game winning goal.
  • Rob Rossi of The Athletic is also reporting that Casey DeSmith did not participate in Penguins practice yesterday. While he was not injured, he was apparently forced back to the team’s hotel with an illness. Not much else is known, but it could create another interesting development for the Penguins as they have a back-to-back tonight in Colorado and then in Dallas tomorrow against the Stars. DeSmith stood on his head earlier this season with a 41 save win against the Avalanche and would have presumably started tonight or tomorrow’s game. Should he remain sick it could force the Penguins to use Jarry in both games, which is something they may be hesitant to do given Jarry’s play lately. The Surrey native has struggled in recent weeks having been pulled in four of his previous 11 starts, this has cratered his save percentage which now sits at just .907 for the season. Not ideal for a goaltender who is just over three months away from unrestricted free agency.
