Tampa Bay Lightning Sign Cal Foote To Entry-Level Deal

The Tampa Bay Lightning announced they have signed their 2017 first-round pick, defenseman Cal Foote to a three-year entry-level contract. The Athletic’s Joe Smith writes that Foote will sign an Amateur Tryout (ATO) with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL for the remainder of the season. Foote is the son of former NHL blueliner Adam Foote.

Foote, the 14th overall pick in last year’s draft, is a big 6-foot-4 defenseman with an offensive mind. The 19-year-old scored 19 goals last season for the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL and tallied 70 points, both were two shy of being team records. He led all Kelowna blueliners in goals, assists and points and had the second highest plus/minus ratio at +31. The team captain was also named MVP of a team that was loaded in scorers, including Kole Lind, Dillon Dube and Carsen Twarynski.

The blueliner aided Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships earlier this year. Known for his incredible hockey sense, the prospect has worked hard on his skating skills, which has always considered his weak point as he wears size-16 skates. However, his scoring ability as well as his size was a big reason why general manager Steve Yzerman held onto him during trade negotiations at the deadline as Foote’s name was constantly in the rumor mill.

As the Stanley Cup playoffs begin to creep closer, the playoff picture is slowly starting to take shape as teams are slowly clinching playoff spots. While the Western Conference has just three teams that have clinched a spot, the Eastern Conference already has five teams that have earned their way into the playoffs. Throw in multiple injuries and many teams are likely to be making moves today to keep their rosters together for the final week of the regular season.

  • After calling him up on an emergency loan on Saturday, the Calgary Flames have assigned defenseman Oliver Kylington to the Stockton Heat of the AHL on Sunday. He did not make it into Saturday’s game. The 20-year-old blueliner
  • The St. Louis Blues assigned defenseman Chris Butler to the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL after recalling the veteran blueliner on an emergency recall Saturday. He did not get in Saturday’s game as he served as an extra defender.
  • The Winnipeg Jets announced they have recalled defenseman Sami Niku. The 21-year-old has been having an excellent rookie year with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. The 2015 seventh-round pick has put up 15 goals and 37 assists this year and is tied for first among AHL-blueliners in points with 52. He could make his debut Monday. Jets insider Jamie Thomas writes that Niku will likely fill in for resting players for the playoffs, while the team also hopes to get a long look at the youngster.
  • With the Minnesota Wild facing life without Ryan Suter, the team has recalled Carson Soucy from the AHL. Soucy has recorded 15 points in his first professional season, after signing out of the NCAA last spring. The 6’4″ defenseman’s recall is under emergency conditions, meaning he won’t count to the four post-deadline call-ups.
  • Roland McKeown is on his way back up for the Carolina Hurricanes, recalled after just a few days in the minor leagues. McKeown has two points in the seven games he’s played for the Hurricanes this year, his debut NHL season.

Blue Jackets’ Ian Cole Fined For Dangerous Trip

The Department of Player Safety announced they have fined Columbus Blue Jackets’ defenseman Ian Cole $5,000, the maximum allowed by the CBA, for a dangerous trip on Vancouver’s Brandon Sutter on Saturday between the two teams.

The 29-year-old blueliner was given a two-minute minor for the incident. Cole was suspended for three games back in 2012 for an illegal hit to the head.

Cole was acquired at the trade deadline from the Ottawa Senators after they picked him up from the Pittsburgh Penguins days before. He has fit in nicely to the team’s lineup, but while there are rumors that Columbus has been discussing an extension, there is concern that the Blue Jackets might not be able to afford his pricetag as he will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He has five goals and 15 assists this season.

 

Snapshots: Kane, Martin, Rasmussen, Rask, Hart

While it’s not a big surprise, the play of San Jose rental Evander Kane has opened some eyes in the NHL. In 15 games with the Sharks, the 26-year-old has put up nine goals and five assists, showing he has the skills to be the star winger that many teams thought he could be despite some mid-season struggles with the Buffalo Sabres.

Despite getting Kane for a reduced price because of the lack of interested teams, don’t expect that to be the case this offseason. While it is believed that the San Jose Sharks will try to re-sign him this summer, The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz (subscription required) writes in a mailbag column that no extension talks have begun and the price should be quite high as many more teams are likely to be in on Kane. In fact, Kurz writes the forward will be looking for both term and salary in this deal and could cost the Sharks as much as seven years at $7MM per season, which he believes will likely happen

  • Kurz also mentions in his mailbag feature that it is extremely likely the team will buyout defenseman Paul Martin, who has one more year next season at $4.85MM. The 37-year-old blueliner has slowed down and has only managed to appear in 10 games for the Sharks this year and spent 18 games with the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL, the first time he’s ever played in the AHL. A buyout would save the Sharks $2.83MM in cap space for next season, which they might want if they intend to sign a big-named free agent.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press writes that 2017 first-round pick Michael Rasmussen has been playing some of the best hockey of his career in the WHL playoffs. One big difference is that the center has occasionally moved to the wing during recent games due to his excellent chemistry with Carolina Hurricane’s prospect Morgan Geekie. His success at the wing could be a good sign if the 19-year-old prospect hopes to make the Red Wings squad out of training camp. Rasmussen, who has had 31 goals and 59 points (along with five goals and 12 points in four playoff games) for the Tri-City Americans, could be a key rebuilding chip for a struggling Detroit squad.
  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News-Observer tweets that Carolina Hurricanes forward Victor Rask, who was declared out for the season almost two weeks ago, had successful surgery on his shoulder and is expected to be ready for training camp next season assuming his rehab goes well. The 25-year-old had 14 goals and 31 points this season.
  • The Athletic’s Alexander Appleyard (subscription required) breaks down the amazing success that Philadelphia Flyers prospect goaltender Carter Hart has had this year. Besides the amazing, eye-popping numbers of a 1.60 GAA and a .947 save percentage with the Everett Silvertips of the WHL, the 19-year-old has had a such a dominating season that no other goalie’s numbers are even close to Hart. Appleyard continues to break down 106 seasons between the WHL, OHL and the QMJHL combined and can’t find a year in which a prospect had this great of a season in comparison to his peers. Hart is expected to get more seasoning next year in the AHL before he takes over in Philadelphia.

Columbus Has Key Defensive Decisions To Make This Offseason

The Columbus Blue Jackets are enjoying some of their best defensive depth in team history as they currently have 10 blueliners on their current roster. Not even including the impressive play of their top line of Seth Jones and Zach Werenski, the team has a quality top-six with trade deadline acquisition Ian Cole to pair with David Savard on the second line. The recently extended Markus Nutivaara also makes a quality third pairing with Ryan Murray. Their depth is so great that veteran Jack Johnson finds himself as a healthy scratch lately and can’t seem to break into Columbus lineup on most days.

However, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic (subscription required) writes that the Blue Jackets’ blueline should look quite different next season and much of those changes will revolve around what the team does with three players in particular, including Johnson, Cole and Murray.

Johnson has had a tough year and is wrapping up a seven-year, $30.5MM contract. The 31-year-old asked for a  trade midway through the season as his playing time had dropped this year, but the Blue Jackets found no takers and seems unlikely to return to Columbus considering how little he has been playing of late and now has been a healthy scratch for four straight games.

Cole, who many believed Columbus added as only a trade rental, has made quite a mark on the team’s defense and seems to be a good fit next to the physical Savard and the team is considering bringing him back next season. General manager Jarmo Kekalainen had a hand in drafting him back in 2007 when he was with the St. Louis Blues. According to Portzline, there have been rumors the team has already discussed a contract extension with Cole, but there are questions whether the team can afford him.

As for Murray, the team must make a decision on whether they want to retain the restricted free agent. Murray, who is currently making $2.825MM this year, is an excellent skater and puck mover, but has struggled his entire career with injuries. He’s only played out a full 82-game season once and has never come close after that as 66 games is his next highest. He’s played in just 41 games this year.

If the team signs two of those three players, Columbus should continue to have a strong defensive core in the future.

Avalanche Lose Varlamov, Johnson To Major Injuries

The Colorado Avalanche’s playoff chances took a big hit as the team announced today that starting goalie Semyon Varlamov will be out for the season after sustaining a lower-body injury Friday night, while defenseman Erik Johnson will miss the next six weeks with a fractured patella. The two injuries figure to be a huge blow to team who many felt had a good chance of reaching the playoffs this year.

The irony is that Varlamov and Jonathan Bernier made history Friday after the two combined for the first combined shutout in franchise history (Nordiques as well). Varlamov saved 30-of-30 shots before Chicago’s Tomas Jurco collided with Varlamov on an attempted shot late in the third period, forcing the goaltender to be helped off the ice. Bernier finished the game. Varlamov was having a solid season as he has a 2.68 GAA and a .920 save percentage in 51 games. Bernier will have to take over as starter. He has a 2.82 GAA and a .913 save percentage in 33 games this year.

Johnson did not play in Friday’s game with no explanation, but is just as likely done for the year unless the Avalanche can not only reach the playoffs, but make an extended run in them. The oft-injured defenseman has been having a solid season, but has never played an entire 82-game season ever. His 62 games this season are the highest in two years.

Despite the disappointment, the Avalanche who finished with the worst record last season, have put together a remarkable season and considering they made no moves at the trade deadline, the team should look at this season as a positive regardless of whether they make the playoffs or not.

 

Eeli Tolvanen Free To Sign With Predators

Monday: Jokerit and Tolvanen have officially terminated his contract, making the young sniper free to sign with the Predators. According to Pekka Jalonen of Iltalehti in Finland, Tolvanen will meet the team in Nashville on Wednesday.

Saturday: The Nashville Predators got some good news today on the status of 2017 first-round pick Eeli Tolvanen, who has been playing for Jokerit of the KHL. The Predators’ plan, which is to bring the 18-year-old to the NHL and have him join the team for their Stanley Cup run this season, is that much closer today after Jokerit was eliminated from the playoffs Saturday and the Tennessean’s Adam Vingan tweets that Tolvanen is now free to sign with Nashville at any time.

Tolvanen scored a goal Saturday in Jokerit’s 4-3 loss to CSKA in Game 6 of their playoff series. The 30th pick in the 2017 draft has had a breakout year with Jokerit as he scored 21 goals and added 17 assists as a rookie.

However, TSN’s Bob McKenzie writes not to expect Tolvanen to hop on a plane and fly to Nashville tonight or even in the next day or two. McKenzie says that it may take some time for things to process, from a getting a release from Jokerit, to a contract, to dealing with immigration. Sportsnet’s John Shannon tweets the Predators will know more about Tolvanen’s status by Tuesday.

The other question that factors into the move will be whether or not the team chooses to burn Tolvanen’s first year of his entry-level deal. If he plays more than nine games between the regular season and the playoffs, he would burn that first-year of his ELC. However, while the team might be open to doing that to add another elite scorer for their playoff run, Vingan points out another factor the team will be considering as well. If there is an expansion draft for the Seattle franchise in 2020 (like many expect), Tolvanen would only be exempt from the draft if he does not play more than nine games this season. Assuming the franchise continues to be as deep as they are for the next few years, the Predators might rather have him exempt.

Chicago Blackhawks Sign Dylan Sikura To Entry-Level Deal

3:25 p.m.: Powers tweeted that Sikura’s deal will be a two-year entry-level deal and he will wear No. 95 for the Blackhawks on Thursday.

1:05 p.m.: The Chicago Blackhawks have officially signed Northeastern star Dylan Sikura to an entry-level contract, according to The Athletic’s Scott Powers (subscription required). There is no word on contract specifics yet. Sikura, Chicago’s top prospect and a Hobey Baker Award finalist, is expected to leave for Chicago tonight, but will not be allowed to play in Monday’s NHL game due to visa issues. Instead, he is expected to make his Blackhawks’ debut on Thursday against the Winnipeg Jets.

Sikura’s college career at Northeastern, who was eliminated Saturday by Michigan 3-2, is over after four years. As reported yesterday, the 22-year-old forward was rumored to have already a deal in place after the Huskies were eliminated. As a fourth-year senior, Sikura could have chosen to become a unrestricted free agent on Aug. 15, but the opportunity to play for the Blackhawks immediately was likely enough incentive to sign. The Blackhawks tried to sign him after a solid junior campaign, but he opted to return to Northeastern and there was some concern he would sign with Chicago at all.

Sikura, Chicago’s sixth-round pick back in 2014, is coming off a successful college career at Northeastern in which he 58 goals in his four years there, including 43 during his junior and senior years combined. During those final two years, he put up 111 points. An undersized forward at 6-foot, 166 pounds, he is considered to have excellent skating ability and goal-scoring skills and is expected to be a big part of Chicago’s rebuilding plan.

Winnipeg Signs C.J. Suess To Entry-Level Contract

The Winnipeg Jets announced they have signed Minnesota State University – Mankato forward C.J. Suess to a one-year entry-level contract for the 2018-19 season. The Hobey Baker Award finalist has signed an amateur tryout contract and will report to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old forward played all four years with the Mavericks and put up career highs this year, scoring 22 goals to capture the WCHA scoring title and he was named WCHA Player of the Year. He is considered to be a quality skater with continually progressive skills, according to Winnipeg Sun’s Ken Wiebe.

Due to his age, a one-year deal was the most Suess was allowed to sign for. After his one-year deal expires a year from now, he will become a restricted free agent. Suess, a 2014 fifth-round pick of the Jets, signed despite having the option to become an unrestricted free agent on Aug. 15 as a four-year collegiate player.

Buffalo Sabres Sign St. Cloud’s Will Borgen To Entry-Level Deal

The Buffalo Sabres announced they have signed St. Cloud State and U.S. Olympian Will Borgen to a three-year, entry level contract that will start in the 2018-19 season. He is expected to sign an Amateur Tryout (ATO) with the Rochester Americans of the AHL and play there for the rest of the season.

Borgen played three years with St. Cloud State, but after a season in which he also took a break to play for the U.S. Olympic team (although he didn’t play)and was just one of four college players on the roster, the 21-year-old decided it was time to move on. The Sabres’ fourth-round pick in 2015, Borgen accumulated five goals and 36 assists over his three years there. Known for his defensive skills, he was named National College Hockey Conference’s Defensive Defenseman of the Year this season.

Borgen, at 6-foot-2, 188 pounds, was able to sign a little earlier than many had expected after his top-seeded Huskies lost in the first round in an upset to Air Force Friday. General manager Jason Botterill was at that game and was quick to move in and sign the young prospect.
