Dallas Stars Recall Matt Murray
The Dallas Stars have used an emergency recall to bring goaltender Matt Murray up to the NHL roster. This move comes after the team was forced to ice St. Louis’ emergency backup goalie, Joey O’Brien, as their backup when they faced the Blues on Saturday. Playing with O’Brien as backup on Saturday made the Stars eligible for an emergency recall.
Murray – who shares a name with a goaltender currently on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ long-term injured reserve – has appeared in 13 games this season with Dallas’ AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars. He’s managed an 8-4-1 record in those matchups, adding a .908 save percentage. The AHL’s Stars have been platooning Murray with 22-year-old Remi Poirier, who has a 6-3-2 record and .901 save percentage in 11 appearances of his own.
But, unlike Poirier, Murray has made his NHL debut, playing in three games for Dallas last season. He went 1-2-0 in the trio of games, saving 54 of a possible 64 shots for a .844 save percentage. Murray, now 25, signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent after the end of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst’s 2021-22 campaign. The netminder had previously spent five seasons with the school, appearing in a total 121 games and setting a .916 save percentage. Murray has matched that save percentage through his first 53 career AHL games, after making his professional debut at the end of the 2021-22 season.
Murray will join Scott Wedgewood as Dallas’ goalie pair for the foreseeable future, with typical starter Jake Oettinger out with a lower-body injury and without a timeline to return. Oettinger abruptly left in the first period of team’s December 15th game and hasn’t played since.
Travis Boyd, Barrett Hayton Out Long-Term With Upper-Body Injuries
Forward Travis Boyd is worried to be done for the season after suffering what is believed to be a torn pectoral muscle, per Arizona Coyotes insider Craig Morgan on Sunday’s PHNX postgame show. Morgan also shared that Barrett Hayton has suffered a setback in his return from a hand injury and likely won’t return until early-February.
These are two big blows to a Coyotes roster that seemingly can’t get past the injury bug. Boyd and Hayton are joined by Sean Durzi and Vladislav Kolyachonok in missing games due to injury, with Durzi being the only one of the group not currently on injured reserve. Jason Zucker has also missed seven games through the early season.
Boyd loses his season after playing in 16 games and scoring eight points for the Coyotes’ fourth-line. The 30-year-old centerman has come into his own with Arizona, who he joined as an unrestricted free agent in 2021. Boyd has managed the two highest-scoring seasons of his career in his two years with the Yotes, scoring 35 points in 74 games in 2021-22 and 34 points in 82 games last season. He was on pace to maintain that scoring this year, despite seeing his average ice time plummet from 16:32 to just 9:37 between last season and this season. Over a seven year career, Boyd has totaled 296 NHL games and 118 points.
The Coyotes are also losing former-fifth overall selection Hayton for an extended period. The 23-year-old winger has also appeared in 16 games this season, scoring four points. It’s a step down from the career-high 43 points that Hayton managed in 82 games last season. Hayton spent most of his time this season playing alongside Nick Schmaltz and Clayton Keller, a role that has since been filled by rookie Logan Cooley or Zucker, when healthy.
Aaron Dell Joins Carolina On PTO Agreement
Goaltender Aaron Dell has joined the Carolina Hurricanes on a professional try-out contract. This moves comes after Carolina placed Antti Raanta on waivers and subsequently sent him to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves.
Dell hasn’t played yet this season, spending most of last year with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. He appeared in 38 games with the club, setting a 15-17-4 record and recording a .898 save percentage. Dell also received four NHL games last season – going 0-3-0 and stopping 94 of a possible 103 shots for a .913 save percentage. Now 34, Dell has become a prominent option for goaltending depth around the league, with Carolina set to become the fourth franchise that the netminder has suited up for.
Dell’s journey to the big leagues began at the University of North Dakota, where he played three seasons before setting his sights on pros. But his options were limited after going undrafted in the NHL Draft, with the goalie opting to move to the Allen Americans of the now-defunct Central Hockey League to kick off his pro career in 2012-13. Dell moved to the ECHL for the following season, playing well enough to warrant an AHL call-up mid-season and an invite to the San Jose Sharks’ training camp ahead of the 2014-15 season. Dell wouldn’t receive an NHL contract out of camp but, after continuing his strong performances in the minors, signed his first deal with the Sharks in March of 2015. He would receive his NHL debut in the 2016-17 season, a year where Dell played in 20 games and set a career-high .931 save percentage.
Now, eight seasons later, Dell will look to continue his NHL career in Carolina. The veteran pro has totaled 130 career NHL games, going 50-50-13 and recording a .905 save percentage.
Auston Matthews, T.J. Brodie Sit Out Saturday With Illness
5:45 PM: The Toronto Maple Leafs have confirmed that Matthews and T.J. Brodie will both miss Saturday’s game with illness.
5:35 PM: Auston Matthews may be forced out of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Saturday night matchup with illness, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports. The Leafs will kick off against the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7 P.M. ET – one of six games starting at that time. Matthews will be sitting out of his first game of the season if he misses Saturday night.
It’s an untimely absence for Matthews, who, with a pair of goals tonight, could have become the second-fastest Maple Leafs player to reach 25 goals in the modern era. He would have achieved the feat in 28 games, one shy of the 27 games it took Wendel Clark in 1993-94. Matthews will have another shot at the feat on Tuesday when Toronto returns home to face the New York Rangers.
Matthews is having another successful season in the NHL, although he doesn’t currently carry his usual title as the Leafs leading scorer. That instead belongs to William Nylander, who’s managed 38 points in 27 games this season. Matthews has only put up 35 points, although his NHL-leading 23 goals leads the team by a margin of nine. The 26-year-old Matthews is on a 70-goal pace through mid-December, looking to top the career-high of 60 goals that he recorded in 2021-22.
Brodie, also absent from Saturday’s matchup, is also missing his first game of the season. He has managed six points in his 27 appearances with the Leafs this season, averaging just over 22 minutes of ice time each night.
Senators Recall Angus Crookshank From AHL’s Belleville
The Ottawa Senators have recalled winger Angus Crookshank from the AHL’s Belleville Senators. Crookshank has appeared in 24 games for the minor league club this season, scoring a team-high 10 goals and 21 points. This performance comes after Crookshank managed 26 goals and 47 points in 71 AHL games last season, good for fourth on Belleville in scoring.
This is the first call-up of the 23-year-old Crookshank’s career, which began after Ottawa drafted the forward in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft. Crookshank went on to play in three seasons with the University of New Hampshire, totaling 90 games and 63 points with the school. He turned pro following the conclusion of New Hampshire’s 2020-21 season, finishing the year with 16 points in 19 AHL games. But despite the hot start to his professional career, Crookshank was forced out of the entire 2021-22 season after undergoing surgery on his knee. He’s returned strong for the Belleville Senators, though, and earned his first shot at an NHL debut as a result.
Ottawa is currently facing a string of forward injuries, missing both Mathieu Joseph and Rourke Chartier for their Sunday game against the Vegas Golden Knights. The team is also uncertain when Vladimir Tarasenko will return, with the top scorer questionable for Sunday.
The Senators also recalled forward Jiri Smejkal in response to their list of injuries. Smejkal recently appeared in his first two career NHL games, going without a point in either contest. The 27-year-old is in his first NHL season after seven years in various top leagues across Europe. Ottawa will need to turn to an extra forward – likely Smejkal – with Rourke and Chartier out. But if Tarasenko also misses Sunday’s matchup, Crookshank could find himself primed for his first NHL game.

It’s ramp-up time for international hockey across the world. The 2023 World Junior A Challenge will play its medal games on Sunday, the Spengler Cup is 10 days away from its kickoff, matched by the kickoff of the 2024 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships kicking off on the same day. Teams are finalizing their lineups and beginning travel for the latter two tournaments and with an uptick in games has come an uptick in player movement. As always, we’ll keep track of notable player transactions here:
- 153-game veteran of the NHL Michael Hutchinson has signed a one-year contract with the AHL’s Grand Rapid Griffins that will carry the goalie through the remainder of the 2023-24 season. Hutchinson has appeared in 13 games for Grand Rapids this season under a professional try-out contract. He gets promoted to a full contract after setting a 5-7-1 record and .895 save percentage with the Griffins. Hutchinson has spent the last five seasons bouncing between the NHL and AHL, failing to record more than 30 games in any league since the 2015-16 season. The now 33-year-old goaltender has played all across North America, playing for five different NHL clubs and seven different AHL clubs since becoming a pro in 2010-11. Hutchinson was drafted by the Boston Bruins – a club he never played an NHL game for – in the third round of the 2008 NHL Draft.
- Belarusian National Team player Shane Prince has signed a new, one-year contract with Spartak Moscow of the KHL. This deal will carry him through the rest of the 2023-24 season. Prince has become a prominent member of Russia’s top league since moving to the country for the 2018-19 season. He’s since totaled 167 points in 256 games in the KHL, intermixed with 19 appearances and 12 points in the National League, Switzerland’s top league. Prince also began playing with Belarus’ national team at the 2021 World Cup, and other international matchups that year, and most recently joined the team in their win of the Channel One Cup. Prince was once a highly-regarded NHL draft prospect, hearing his name called by the Ottawa Senators in the second round of the 2011 NHL Draft. But despite a strong OHL career, Prince was never able to get it going in the NHL or AHL. He totaled 38 points in 128 NHL games, and 150 points in 210 AHL games, before his move to Russia.

Gene Carr Passes Away At 72
The Los Angeles Kings have shared that former top NHL prospect Gene Carr has passed away at the age of 72. Carr was drafted fourth overall in the 1971 NHL Draft and went on to appear in 465 career NHL games. He appeared with five different franchises throughout his eight-year career, including five seasons with the Kings and three years with the New York Rangers.
Carr was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 1971, the same draft that saw Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne go first and second overall; also boasting Hall of Fame talent with 20th-overall choice Larry Robinson. Carr appeared in the 15th-most NHL games of the draft class, making his debut with the Blues in the 1971-72 season. He was traded to the Rangers after only 14 games and five points with the Blues, though, as part of a seven-player swap between the two teams. Carr finished his rookie season with 60 games and 16 points in New York and would appear in one more modest season with the Rangers before being traded to the Kings for a first-round draft pick.
The move to L.A. kicked off the strongest years of Carr’s career. He scored 17 points in his first 21 games with the franchise in 1974 and would go on to become iconic for his long, blonde hair and charming personality, making him a recognizable face of the early Kings franchise. But despite spending the heat of his career in Los Angeles, Carr’s career year came in 1977-78, when he appeared in five games and scored two goals with L.A. before being moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he recorded 17 goals and 54 points in 70 games, bringing his total on the season to 19 goals and 56 points, both career-highs. It would be Carr’s only season in Pittsburgh and he would go on to retire at the age of 27 after one season with the Atlanta Flames.
Snapshots: Aho, Pacioretty, Rangers Injuries
The New York Islanders have activated defenseman Sebastian Aho off of injured reserve and are expecting him to return for the team’s Wednesday night game. Aho has missed the team’s last eight games with an upper-body injury.
The Islanders are facing a slew of injuries to their blueline, recalling Grant Hutton to the NHL lineup on Wednesday to replace Scott Mayfield, who was announced as day-to-day with an injury of his own. Mayfield joins Ryan Pulock and Adam Pelech on the list of inactive Islanders’ defenders. The team also acquired Robert Bortuzzo via trade, adding to their depth on the back end.
Aho’s return gives New York a small boost. The 27-year-old defenseman has appeared in 19 games this season, netting four assists, six penalty minutes, and a -3. While Aho made his NHL debut in the 2017-18 season, it wasn’t until last year that he played in more than 40 games in one season. He totaled 23 points, 22 penalty minutes, and a +9 through 71 games in the 2022-23 season, ranking fourth among Islanders defenders in scoring.
Other notes from around the league:
- Washington Capitals winger Max Pacioretty took a full practice for the first time this season on Wednesday, taking a major step towards his return from an Achille’s tendon injury. Pacioretty was announced as still being two weeks away from a return on December 6th.
- New York Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette shared a handful of injury updates, noting that “nothing has changed” for centerman Filip Chytil (upper-body injury), Kaapo Kakko (lower-body injury) has yet to resume skating, and that he has no update on when K’Andre Miller (personal reasons) may return.
Jets Place Kyle Connor On IR, Recall Dominic Toninato
The Winnipeg Jets have placed top-scoring forward Kyle Connor on injured reserve with a knee injury. It was recently reported that Connor would be out for six to eight weeks, with the winger slated to undergo an MRI to discover the extent of his injury. Winnipeg has used an emergency recall to bring Dominic Toninato up to the NHL roster in light of Connor’s move to IR.
Connor has been a major focal piece of Winnipeg’s early season, with the winger tied for fourth in goals with 17 in 26 games. He’s also managed 11 assists, bringing him up to a team-high 28 points. With the 27-year-old out for an extended period, the Jets will need to look towards players like Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers to carry additional weight. The team has also benefited from NHL sophomore Cole Perfetti, who currently has nine goals and 19 points in 27 games.
Toninato will serve as additional forward depth for the club, after scoring six points through his first nine AHL games this season. The 29-year-old centerman is in his fourth season with the Jets organization, serving as a go-to extra forward for the team. He appeared in one full season with the Jets in 2021-22, recording 14 points and 22 penalty minutes in 77 games. It was the first full season of Toninato’s career, after making his debut in the 2017-18 season. He’s also appeared in 64 games with Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, scoring 24 goals and 45 points with the club. Toninato was originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs and is appearing with his third NHL franchise in Winnipeg.
Islanders Recall Grant Hutton As Scott Mayfield Faces Injury
The New York Islanders have brought defenseman Grant Hutton back to the NHL after sending him to the minors on December 11th. This recall comes in light of Scott Mayfield suffering an upper-body injury that will hold him out day-to-day.
Mayfield joins a list of Islanders defensemen facing injury, with the team already without top defenders Ryan Pulock and Adam Pelech. The team recently acquired Robert Bortuzzo from the St. Louis Blues to provide depth to the back end. The new addition has appeared in two games with the Islanders, recording two penalty minutes and a -1.
Hutton rejoins the squad to again serve as the team’s seventh defenseman. The 28-year-old has only appeared in two NHL games this season. They were his first appearances in the league since he played 16 games in the 2021-22 season – his only other handful of NHL ice time. Hutton has one goal and four penalty minutes through his 18 combined NHL games.
The Islanders signed Hutton as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of Miami University’s 2018-19 season. Hutton totaled 144 collegiate games over four seasons at Miami, scoring 71 points and recording 114 penalty minutes. He’s spent much of his professional career with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, where he’s played a total of 189 games and scored 67 career points. He’s also added 91 penalty minutes and a -12. These tallies include the five assists, 14 penalty minutes, and -5 that Hutton has recorded in 16 AHL games this season.
Hutton and Bortuzzo will serve as important depth pieces for the Islanders as they look to ride out all of the injuries to their blueline.
