Hurricanes Acquire K’Andre Miller In Sign-And-Trade With Rangers

5:51 p.m.: The trade is official as reported, the team announced.

4:33 p.m.: The deal will be a sign-and-trade with the Rangers, per Friedman. It will be an eight-year deal for Miller worth a total value of $60MM for $7.5MM per season. He’ll be Carolina’s highest-paid defenseman by a significant margin as a result. A 2026 first-round pick will be part of the return, per Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today. The deal is split evenly across this season and is paid entirely in base salary aside from a $2MM signing bonus up front, per PuckPedia. It also includes a 10-team no-trade clause beginning in 2027-28. Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports the full return is a conditional first, the Hurricanes’ 2026 second-round pick, and right-shot defender Scott Morrow. The condition on the 2026 first is that the Rangers will receive the better of Carolina’s or Dallas’ 2026 first-rounders, and it’s top-10 protected, per PuckPedia.

4:16 p.m.: The trade has been agreed to in principle but has yet to be executed because Miller and the Hurricanes are still in talks on a new contract, per Friedman. He adds the trade was made in lieu of an offer sheet Carolina was preparing for Miller.

11:56 a.m.: The Hurricanes are acquiring the signing rights to defenseman K’Andre Miller from the Rangers, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports. The trade return will center around draft pick compensation, per Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today.

After a season full of trade rumors, the Rangers have finally moved on from Miller and brought in Vladislav Gavrikov as his immediate replacement. Since the return package consists of draft pick compensation, this trade closely resembles the 2020 deal in which the Rangers traded defenseman Brady Skjei to the Hurricanes for a first-round pick.

Carolina will assuredly bank on the 2022-23 version of Miller, which was arguably the best season of his young career. During that campaign, Miller scored nine goals and 43 points in 79 games for the Rangers with a +12 rating, averaging nearly 22 minutes of ice time per game. Unfortunately, the Rangers only had the financial flexibility to sign Miller to a two-year bridge deal, but the belief at the time was that they would have liked to have retained him for longer.

Hindsight being 20/20, the Rangers were thankful that they didn’t sign Miller to a longer-term agreement. Since his breakout campaign in 2022-23, Miller has scored 15 goals and 57 points in 154 contests with a +5 rating. His possession and defensive metrics have also dropped, falling from a 51.5% CorsiFor% at even strength to 49.2%, and an 89.8% on-ice save percentage at even strength to an 88.7%.

Still, he has maintained a high level of physicality and continues to block over 100 shots each season. There is reason for optimism that many of his advanced metrics will improve in Carolina, considering that the team has a very deep defensive core and is one of the top possession teams in the league.

The trade also carries implications for the Hurricanes’ unrestricted free agents from their defensive core. Given that the team is planning on making Alexander Nikishin a full-time defender beginning in the 2025-26 season, there is little chance that Dmitry Orlov or Brent Burns will return to Carolina. Due to the trade protection given to the team’s other defensemen, the Hurricanes are likely to move out any of their current blueliners to clear a pathway for Orlov or Burns to return.

Vladislav Gavrikov Expected To Reach Free Agency

The Kings are not expecting to get an extension done with defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov before he reaches unrestricted free agency on Tuesday, general manager Ken Holland told reporters Saturday (including John Hoven of Mayor’s Manor).

The news doesn’t rule out Gavrikov returning to L.A. if they dole out the most competitive offer for him on the open market, but it does understandably significantly decrease the likelihood of him remaining in a Kings uniform next season. They’ve had continued discussions with Gavrikov’s camp on a new deal this week, but still aren’t close, Holland said.

The silver lining for Los Angeles is that Gavrikov has a limited number of teams he’s considering signing with this summer, the Kings obviously being among them. The other presumed frontrunner for his services will be the Rangers, where there have been strong indications of mutual interest, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period said last week.

If Gavrikov departs, that’s now two defense slots L.A. needs to replace on the open market or via trade. The team also traded young righty Jordan Spence to the Senators during today’s draft.

Replacing Gavrikov directly will be a struggle. The 29-year-old is understandably looking to cash in following the best two-way season of his career, averaging over 23 minutes per game while posting 30 points and a +26 rating in 82 appearances for the Kings.

There’s no one available who checks all the boxes of Gavrikov’s strengths as a puck-mover, penalty-killer, and shot-blocker with a big frame. Some names could at least help them recoup a big chunk of Gavrikov’s value.

Ivan Provorov is one, and it looks like the fellow Russian lefty will be available next week with no extension looming with the Blue Jackets. He doesn’t match Gavrikov’s defensive skillset but could produce better possession impacts in an insulated L.A. system, and he has plenty of experience logging the type of deployment Gavrikov managed for the Kings this season. He’s also one of the more durable players in the league and has three straight 82-game seasons under his belt.

Matt Grzelcyk, Ryan Lindgren, and Dmitry Orlov round out the next tier of available lefties after Provorov, all of which present a more significant projected downgrade on the value Gavrikov brought to the Kings’ blue line last season. Among trade targets, there could be an informal swap with the Rangers in the cards. Los Angeles has kicked tires on New York’s K’Andre Miller, a pending RFA, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period. A speculative sign-and-trade that sees Gavrikov head to Manhattan while the Kings acquire Miller’s signing rights could be feasible.

That would, of course, leave the Kings looking to pursue a more defensively responsible righty to replace the puck-moving Spence. That’s not exactly the skillset Miller provides, and in order to get the most out of his all-around value, he’d need something of an anchor partner next to him on the right side. Top open-market righties include Aaron Ekblad – although that likely won’t work under the salary cap if they’re already bringing in a speculative mid-priced asset in Miller – along with Cody Ceci, Henri Jokiharju, and Dante Fabbro.

Strong Market Developing For K’Andre Miller

While the Rangers opened up over $6MM in cap space when they moved Chris Kreider to Anaheim, they’re still expected to continue shaking up their roster.  One of the potential casualties has long been speculated to be defenseman K’Andre Miller.  Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports that between 12 and 15 teams have inquired about the 25-year-old.

Miller is a pending restricted free agent and is coming off a bridge contract that saw him carry a cap charge of $3.872MM.  However, the back-loaded structure of that agreement makes it that his required qualifying offer is $4.646MM while also giving him salary arbitration eligibility.  The belief has been that the Rangers aren’t prepared to give him a long-term deal while a short-term agreement takes him that much closer to testing unrestricted free agency, something he’s eligible for in 2027.

Before the Kreider trade, Miller was a speculative offer sheet candidate, knowing that New York still needs to re-sign winger Will Cuylle while wanting to add via free agency or trades.  The Kreider trade lessens that risk to an extent as the Rangers now have $13.1MM in cap space, per PuckPedia.

Two years ago, it appeared as if the 25-year-old had taken a big step toward becoming an all-around key piece on New York’s back end.  That season, Miller notched a career-best 43 points (including 38 at even strength) while logging nearly 22 minutes per game.  But their cap situation at the time necessitated the bridge deal, something that might ultimately have worked out for the best for the team given what has happened since then.

Miller’s play took a step back in 2023-24 with his production dropping to 30 points while there were more defensive miscues than desired.  This season, it was more of the same.  His output dropped to just 27 points in 74 games while the defensive slipups were more frequent as the Rangers went from a projected preseason contender to a team that ultimately missed the playoffs altogether.

Despite that, Miller has five NHL seasons under his belt as a top-four defender.  He’s willing to throw the body around (with over 100 hits in four straight seasons) and block shots, and as his 2022-23 performance showed, he has some offensive skills.  Between that, a 6’5 frame, and being a strong skater, there’s a lot to work with which is why close to half the league has apparently kicked the tires on his availability, believing that a change of scenery and a new coach could help him get back to his previous form.

That certainly bodes well for GM Chris Drury.  With the UFA market for defensemen not being particularly deep and Miller heading toward his prime years, it appears that the Rangers should be able to get a strong trade return for the blueliner although they’ll have an additional key roster spot to try to fill if and when a move gets made.  But with a goal of continuing to shake up the core group in New York, this appears to be an increasingly viable way to do just that.

Rangers Gauging Interest Level In K’Andre Miller

This past season was a rough one for the Rangers who went from a perceived Stanley Cup contender to missing the playoffs altogether.  Along the way, GM Chris Drury tried to shake up his roster while some of his older veterans could still be available as further shakeups are believed to be desired.

It appears that one player who could be in the mix in a shakeup deal is defenseman K’Andre Miller.  In a recent appearance on Sportsnet 590 (video link), Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Miller’s name is definitely out there as Drury is trying to gauge the market for some of his players.

Two years ago, it looked like the 25-year-old had taken a big step forward toward becoming an all-situations core blueliner with a 43-point breakout year while logging more than 22 minutes a night.  While New York would have preferred to sign him to a long-term deal at that time, their cap situation forced them to pursue a bridge option instead with the sides agreeing on a two-year, $7.74MM pact.

Unfortunately for Miller and the Rangers, his play took a step back the following year and another step back this season.  Offensively, his output dropped to just 27 points in 74 games while some ill-timed defensive miscues helped contribute to the team going from being one of the stingier defensive teams in 2023-24 to one in the bottom half of the league in that category this season.

While this is generally the time that a player would sign a long-term deal coming off a bridge pact, Friedman suggests that the team isn’t ready to make that commitment at this point.  With two RFA-eligible seasons remaining, they could theoretically look to work out a one-year deal but the back-dated nature of his bridge deal puts his qualifying offer alone at $4.646MM.  Between that and Miller being eligible for salary arbitration, even a one-year deal might be costlier than they can afford.

Per PuckPedia, the Rangers enter the summer with just $8.4MM in cap space with Miller and winger Will Cuylle being their most prominent players to re-sign.  But considering the two of them alone could cost that much let alone filling out the rest of their roster or trying to add an impact player, it’s certainly understandable that Drury is at least exploring what level of interest would be out there in Miller to see if a feasible trade presents itself.  But if one does, New York will have a big hole to try to fill on their back end moving forward as well.

Rangers Testing The Market For K’Andre Miller

With new head coach Mike Sullivan at the helm, the New York Rangers are ready to begin the next chapter in their franchise’s story—one that may not include a key defender from recent seasons.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on his 32 Thoughts Podcast that the Rangers are gauging trade interest in pending restricted free agent K’Andre Miller. Friedman compared Miller’s situation to that of the Sabres’ Bowen Byram, another young, high-pedigree defender who could benefit from a change of scenery. As Friedman notes, “It’s not a guarantee, but they are testing the market.”

The 25-year-old Miller is coming off a down year, mirroring the performance of many members of the Rangers’ core who disappointed this season. In 74 games, Miller scored seven goals, 27 points, and posted a zero plus/minus rating. While he tied his career high with 21:57 of ice time per game, Miller also set a career high with 97 giveaways. Moreover, his 107 hits and 110 blocked shots were his lowest totals since his rookie season.

GM Chris Drury will need to decide if trading Miller is the best move for the team, but if a trade doesn’t bring a defender back to New York, the Rangers will likely have to target the position in free agency. As the roster currently stands, the Rangers have five defensemen under contract for the 2025-26 season, which includes Adam Fox, William Borgen, Braden Schneider, Carson Soucy, and Urho Vaakanainen. And like Miller, Matthew Robertson and Zachary Jones are set for restricted free agency, while veteran Calvin de Haan is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

While Miller didn’t have the season he’d hoped for heading into restricted free agency, he could benefit from playing under Sullivan, especially if the coach brings his patented style that helped the Pittsburgh Penguins win two Stanley Cups. In Pittsburgh, Sullivan favored a fast-paced style of play that relied on mobile defenders—something Miller excels at.

K’Andre Miller Undergoes Surgery

It was a bit of a tough year for Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller.  Unfortunately for him, his offseason hasn’t gotten off to a good start either.  Mollie Walker of the New York Post relays that the blueliner recently underwent surgery to repair an upper-body injury sustained late in the season.  His initial plan was to rehab the injury and avoid going under the knife but he ultimately opted for the procedure after the rehab wasn’t working as planned.  The hope is that he will be ready to return for the start of next season.

The 25-year-old has been a core defender for New York over his five-year NHL career.  He has shown some flashes of being an all-around top-pairing piece with an intriguing offensive game but inconsistency has been an issue for him.

That was the case this year, as it was for quite a few Rangers.  Miller played in 74 games, picking up 27 points, his lowest point total since the 2021-22 campaign, his first full NHL season.  He also set a new career high in turnovers with 97; his previous high in that regard was 68.

That’s not exactly the ideal platform year heading into restricted free agency this summer, nor does this surgery help on that front.  Miller is arbitration-eligible for the first time and is owed a $4.646MM qualifying offer, matching his salary from this season but well above his $3.872MM cap charge.  If he files for a hearing, he could ask for a two-year agreement that walks him to UFA status but the team would get the final say on if it was a one-year or two-year award.

It’s also worth noting that GM Chris Drury won’t have a lot of cap flexibility this summer.  With the acquisition of J.T. Miller midseason and the long-term record-breaking extension for Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers have just $8.4MM in cap room, per PuckPedia.  Miller isn’t the only player who needs to be signed as winger Will Cuylle is in line for a new deal as well as a restricted free agent and should come in around the $3MM mark at least on a bridge agreement.  That doesn’t leave much wiggle room to hammer out any type of long-term deal.

Heading into the summer, it felt like the likeliest outcome for Miller was a one-year deal at or near his qualifying offer.  Now with the surgery, that might push things even more in that direction over the coming weeks.

Rangers Activate K’Andre Miller, Assign Chad Ruhwedel To AHL

The Rangers will welcome back a key blueliner on Saturday as Mollie Walker of the New York Post relays (Twitter link) that defenseman K’Andre Miller has been activated off injured reserve.  In a corresponding move, the team announced (Twitter link) that blueliner Chad Ruhwedel has been returned to AHL Hartford.

Miller has missed a little more than two weeks with an upper-body injury but was believed to be nearing a return before the holiday break so it comes as little surprise that he has been activated now.  It has been a rough year for the 24-year-old as he has not been able to get back to the form he had over the past two seasons.  After putting up 43 points in 2022-23 and 30 last season, Miller has been limited to just two goals and four assists in 28 games so far this year despite still logging over 21 minutes a night.

The timing of his struggles certainly isn’t ideal from Miller’s perspective.  He’s in the final season of his two-year bridge deal and will be a restricted free agent this summer with arbitration rights.  At that time, he’ll be owed a $4.646MM qualifying offer but while it looked like he’d vastly exceed that a year ago, that’s less likely to be the case now.  Meanwhile, with the team struggling, he’s among the players who have been speculated as potential trade chips as GM Chris Drury looks to reshape his roster.

As for Ruhwedel, he has been shuttled back and forth throughout the last six weeks but NHL playing time has been hard to come by.  The 34-year-old has played in just five games with New York so far, collecting one assist in a little over 14 minutes a night of playing time.  A veteran of 369 career NHL appearances, Ruhwedel will certainly be among the first recall options whenever another defender is banged up.  Ruhwedel also has three assists in 11 appearances with Hartford.

It has been a tough year for Blue Jackets goaltender Daniil Tarasov.  The 25-year-old has played to a 4.26 GAA and a .857 SV% in his nine starts and has only played once in the last month while AHL starter Jet Greaves has seen time with Columbus since then.  However, GM Don Waddell told Aaron Portzline of The Athletic (subscription link) that he has no plans to put the netminder on waivers, feeling that Tarasov has too much talent to go through unclaimed.  Tarasov had some success just last season when he had a 3.18 GAA and a .908 SV% in 24 games so they’ll continue to work with him in practice for the time being.  It’s a contract year for Tarasov who will be owed a $1.26MM qualifying offer with arbitration rights this summer so he’ll need to turn things around soon or risk being a non-tender candidate in June.

Elsewhere around the NHL:

  • While Stars defenseman Mathew Dumba returned to practice today with a full cage, he will not suit up on Monday against Utah, relays Sam Nestler of DLLS Sports (Twitter link). He has missed the last two weeks with an upper-body injury.  It has been a tough first year in Dallas for Dumba as he has been limited to just one assist in 19 games so far this season which is not the type of production the team was expecting when they signed him to a two-year, $7.5MM contract this summer.
  • Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky told reporters including Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News (subscription link) that they expect to have more information on the path forward for goaltender Vitek Vanecek in the next day or two. The netminder was hit by a puck on the bench on Tuesday and was listed as week-to-week.  He has since seen a specialist so further clarity on how much longer he’ll be out should be coming soon.  Vanecek, a pending unrestricted free agent, has a 3.84 GAA and a .885 SV% in 14 appearances this season.
  • Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller missed today’s game and remains listed as day-to-day, mentions NHL.com’s Dan Rosen (Twitter link). New York was hoping that he’d be able to return from his upper-body injury but evidently, he wasn’t quite ready to do so.  The Rangers are in action on Monday against New Jersey so it’s possible that he returns then or they could opt to give him a few more days of rest over the break.  Miller has just six points in 30 games so far while sitting second in ice time among blueliners at over 21 minutes a night.
  • Oilers center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was scratched tonight due to illness, notes Bob Stauffer of 880 CHED (Twitter link). The veteran had played in all 33 games before this one but is having a quiet year offensively, tallying six goals and a dozen assists.  For comparison, Nugent-Hopkins had 18 goals and 49 helpers in 80 games just last season.

Rangers Place K’Andre Miller On Injured Reserve

Add K’Andre Miller to the list of injured Rangers defensemen. He sustained an upper-body injury in Wednesday’s win over the Sabres and will be placed on injured reserve today, Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today Sports reports.

The left-shot defender was not on the bench for the third period of Wednesday’s game. Head coach Peter Laviolette declined to confirm when Miller sustained the injury, although, as Mollie Walker of the New York Post points out, he took a big hit from Buffalo winger Jordan Greenway midway through the second that could have caused the damage.

The IR placement rules him out through Dec. 18, so he’ll miss three games at the fewest. After tomorrow’s game against the Kings, the Rangers have a three-game Central Division road trip. Miller won’t travel with the team, Mercogliano reports, so he’ll likely miss a fourth as well. That positions his earliest possible return date as Dec. 22 against the Hurricanes.

As it has for many Rangers skaters, it’s been a tough year for Miller. He’s on pace for career lows offensively with just two goals and six points through 28 games, and he’s also on track to post a minus rating for the first time in his five-year run in the NHL. In his nearly 600 minutes on the ice at even strength this season, the Blueshirts have out-attempted opponents 537-517 but have been outscored 32-25.

The Rangers’ win over Buffalo was just their second this month. Since beating the Canucks on Nov. 19, the 2023-24 Presidents’ Trophy winners are 3-8-0 in their last 11 games with a -14 goal differential.

AHL mainstay Connor Mackey is replacing Miller’s top-four minutes alongside Braden Schneider to start, per Mercogliano. Urho Vaakanainen remains unavailable with an upper-body issue after being acquired from the Ducks for ex-captain Jacob Trouba last week.

Snapshots: Aho, Pacioretty, Rangers Injuries

The New York Islanders have activated defenseman Sebastian Aho off of injured reserve and are expecting him to return for the team’s Wednesday night game. Aho has missed the team’s last eight games with an upper-body injury.

The Islanders are facing a slew of injuries to their blueline, recalling Grant Hutton to the NHL lineup on Wednesday to replace Scott Mayfield, who was announced as day-to-day with an injury of his own. Mayfield joins Ryan Pulock and Adam Pelech on the list of inactive Islanders’ defenders. The team also acquired Robert Bortuzzo via trade, adding to their depth on the back end.

Aho’s return gives New York a small boost. The 27-year-old defenseman has appeared in 19 games this season, netting four assists, six penalty minutes, and a -3. While Aho made his NHL debut in the 2017-18 season, it wasn’t until last year that he played in more than 40 games in one season. He totaled 23 points, 22 penalty minutes, and a +9 through 71 games in the 2022-23 season, ranking fourth among Islanders defenders in scoring.
