- Ducks center Mason McTavish returned to practice on Friday as he works his way back from a lower-body injury sustained on Monday against Calgary, notes Elliott Teaford of the Orange County Register. The third-overall pick in 2021 has a goal and an assist in three games this season and could be activated for Tuesday’s game versus Winnipeg.

Max Jones To Undergo Surgery
The Anaheim Ducks could be without Max Jones for the rest of the season, as the young forward will undergo surgery to repair a torn pectoralis major tendon next Wednesday and is facing a recovery timeline of four to six months. GM Bob Murray released a short statement:
It’s a tough blow for Max as he made strides last season and was heading in the right direction this year as well. We hope to have him back this year and at full strength.
Four months would have Jones returning near the end of February, but that potential six-month timeline could keep him out basically the whole season. It’s a brutal situation for the 23-year-old first-round pick, who has had trouble establishing himself at the NHL level but had arguably his best stretch of hockey at the end of last season. He ended the year with seven goals and 11 points in 46 games, reaching 100 hits for the first time and leaning into his role in the bottom-six.
Now, with several months of rehab ahead of him, Jones not only will have to work back to that level but also runs the risk of falling further down the depth chart. In his favor is the three-year deal he signed in August, which carries a cap hit of $1.295MM and keeps him under contract through the 2023-24 season, though even that is going to seem expensive if he can’t keep himself healthy enough to contribute. For now, he’ll sit on injured reserve and watch the Ducks as they try to stay competitive this season.
Anaheim Ducks Place Mason McTavish, Max Jones On Injured Reserve
Per CapFriendly.com (Twitter links), the Anaheim Ducks placed forwards Mason McTavish and Max Jones on the injured reserve list Tuesday night ahead of their contest against the Edmonton Oilers.
In their place, the team has recalled forward Sonny Milano and forward Sam Carrick from the AHL’s San Diego Gulls. They’ll likely serve as healthy scratches tonight, allowing Sam Steel to draw into the lineup for the first time this season and for Derek Grant to return to the lineup.
It’s a rough break especially for the 18-year-old McTavish, who was drafted third overall this past year and has a goal and an assist through his first three games. He’ll miss at least the next ten days’ worth of action.
Milano and Carrick could make their season debuts during their callups. Milano missed a good portion of last season due to injury but still carries scoring upside. Carrick had the most productive year of his career at the NHL level last season, notching six points in 13 games during his time with the big club.
Ducks Waive Derek Grant And Greg Pateryn
Oct 17: Both players have cleared waivers according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
Oct 16: The Ducks have placed a pair of players on waivers today as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports (Twitter link) that Anaheim has waived center Derek Grant and defenseman Greg Pateryn.
Grant’s third stint with Anaheim hasn’t gone as well as his second. While he twice hit double digits in goals in his second tenure with the Ducks, he has struggled offensively since rejoining them last October. Last season, he managed just six goals and nine assists in 46 games and was held off the scoresheet in his first two contests this season. The 31-year-old has managed a faceoff win percentage of over 50% in each year of his career which could be appealing to some teams although his $1.5MM cap hit for this season and next will likely scare those teams off. Anaheim will receive $1.125MM in cap relief if he clears and is sent to the minors.
As for Pateryn, his stock has dipped considerably since he signed a three-year, $6.75MM contract with Minnesota back in 2018. He has played in just 33 NHL games over the past two seasons and cleared waivers a year ago when he was on that deal, spending most of the season the taxi squad for Colorado and San Jose. Pateryn inked a one-year, two-way deal with Anaheim this summer that pays the minimum of $750K in the NHL and $300K in the minors.
Minor Transactions: 10/12/21
Opening Night of the 2021-22 NHL campaign has finally arrived and all eyes are on the season-opening matchups between the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins and the league’s newest team, the Seattle Kraken, and the Vegas Golden Knights. Yet, it has also been a very busy day for “minor” transactions, both the advent of regular NHL recalls and reassignments as well as several notable signings and trades. Keep up with all of these moves right here:
- AHL trades are not common, but there is already one in the books for this season. The Belleville Senators have announced that they have acquired forward Jake Lucchini from the Laval Rocket for future considerations. Lucchini, 26, spent the past season and a half with Laval, but without much to show for it. The former Michigan Tech standout and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect has yet to make his mark on the pros, but will get another shot with Belleville this season.
- A KHL trade today also contained some recognizable names. SKA St. Petersburg has acquired former NHL forward Valentin Zykov from Sibir Novosibirsk. The return is another former NHL forward, Vladislav Kamenev, and San Jose Sharks prospect Yegor Spirodonov. Zykov had been playing in Sweden to begin this year, but now that his KHL rights have transferred he has agreed to a one-year deal with SKA. Zykov skated in 15 games with the Vegas Golden Knights just last year, recording four points. Kamenev spent all of last season in St. Petersburg after notching eight points in 38 games with the Colorado Avalanche in 2019-20. Spirodonov, a 2019 selection, has yet to be given much of a chance in the KHL and could be bound for North America next season if he doesn’t earn a greater role with Novosibirsk.
- Ben Hutton’s late-preseason PTO with the Anaheim Ducks didn’t result in an NHL contract – at least not yet – but the veteran defenseman is remaining with the organization. Hutton has signed an AHL contract with the San Diego Gulls, the team announced. Hutton began last season with the Ducks and that familiarity with the organization combined with the team’s potential seller status could lead to a promotion to an NHL deal at some point this year.
- After initial rosters were finalized yesterday with a vast number of AHL assignments, at least one team is already switching things up. The Dallas Stars have recalled forwards Joel Kiviranta and Jacob Peterson from AHL Texas and sent fellow forwards Oskar Back and Ty Dellandrea and goaltender Jake Oettinger back in a corresponding move. If Peterson plays in Dallas’ opener on Thursday, it will mark his NHL debut.
Ducks, Flames Leading Candidates To Acquire Jack Eichel
Jack Eichel has been on the trade block for what seems like forever and has not been on the ice for the Buffalo Sabres this preseason as he continues to await neck surgery. Yet, his market is heating back up. As TSN’s Darren Dreger wrote earlier this week, the Sabres have been pushed by Eichel’s new agent, Pat Brisson, to share medical files with interested parties. The result has been more clarity as to Eichel’s serious suitors, which could finally lead to a trade.
Eichel’s desired surgical cure, which has been at the center of his ongoing feud with the Sabres, is a disc replacement surgery that has never been attempted on an NHL player. By sharing the specifics of Eichel’s injury, teams can gain more insight into the nature of Eichel’s condition and whether they would agree to his preferred route rather than the typical fusion procedure. As Pierre LeBrun reports for The Athletic, this has helped Kevyn Adams and the Sabres strengthen their trade pitch, as some of the unknowns of an Eichel deal have been cleared up. While LeBrun believes that there will still be a conditional aspect to any deal, Buffalo now finally has a chance to finally close a deal and closer to full value.
Among the teams that LeBrun feels have backed off of the Eichel pursuit are the Minnesota Wild and Philadelphia, and even the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings who seemed like top contenders at one point. However, LeBrun notes that the Anaheim Ducks and Calgary Flames have done their due diligence on Eichel’s condition and the ADR surgery and remain interested in the star center.
Though the cost for Eichel remains a mystery, especially with the suspected conditional component, there will still be a considerable price to pay. Anaheim offers a number of young roster forwards, as well as numerous talented prospects. Calgary offers more current star talent, some of whom would have to move for cap purposes, as well as some top prospects. Both teams would be able to make a strong pitch for Eichel and have good reason for doing so. The Flames may be one major piece away from jumping into Stanley Cup contention, while the Ducks have a budding young core and know that Eichel has expressed some desire to play on the west coast.
While LeBrun stops short of saying a trade is imminent, this is first time that concrete conversations have been had with a media source confirming that Eichel talks are occurring. Eichel needed surgery “like yesterday” per LeBrun and both he and the Sabres desperately need to move on, so for the good of all involved, including NHL fans, hopefully this situation will be resolved before too long.
Minor Transactions: 10/9/21
It has been a busy day on the transactions front as some teams have pulled up previously cut players to round out their roster for their final preseason games while other players will be looking to catch on either in the minors or overseas. Here’s a rundown of those moves.
- The Senators announced (Twitter links) that they’ve recalled defensemen Dillon Heatherington, Mark Kastelic, and Lassi Thomson plus winger Egor Sokolov from AHL Belleville. All four were previously cut in training camp but will be on the roster for their preseason finale against Toronto tonight.
- With Cam Talbot unavailable due to a personal matter, the Wild announced that they’ve recalled goaltender Andrew Hammond from AHL Iowa. He’ll serve as Kaapo Kahkonen’s backup for their preseason finale in Chicago.
- Vegas’ AHL affiliate in Henderson revealed (Twitter link) that the Golden Knights have brought up forwards Jonas Rondbjerg and Jake Leschyshyn from the Silver Knights for their final preseason game tonight versus San Jose.
- Greg McKegg gets another look with the Rangers as Rick Carpinello of The Athletic notes (Twitter link) that the veteran forward has been recalled for tonight’s game against the Islanders. McKegg returned to New York this season after spending 2020-21 with Boston.
- After having his contract terminated by Winnipeg last month, Joona Luoto is heading back home as Tappara in the SM-liiga announced that they’ve inked the 24-year-old to a one-year deal. Luoto played in Tappara’s program – his hometown team – before making the jump to North America in 2019 where he played in 16 games with the Jets.
- Marko Dano’s two-month tryout in Trinec was a successful one as the Czech squad announced they’ve extended his contract for the rest of the season. The 26-year-old was non-tendered by Winnipeg this summer after not seeing any NHL action for the first time in his professional career.
- Kunlun Red Star of the KHL announced (Twitter link) that they’ve signed winger Cliff Pu to a one-year deal. The 23-year-old wrapped up his entry-level contract last season, recording 10 points in 16 games with AHL Cleveland but was non-tendered by Columbus this summer.
- Veteran winger Brandon Mashinter has decided to call it a career and has joined Jacksonville of the ECHL as an assistant coach. The 33-year-old played in parts of four NHL seasons with the Sharks, Rangers, and Blackhawks, notching five points and 50 PIMS in 64 games. Mashinter spent last season in Slovakia after a two-year stint in Germany.
- After clearing waivers, Sonny Milano has been reassigned to the AHL by the Anaheim Ducks. Milano played in just eight games total last season, two of which were with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls. It seems like that total could increase considerably this season unless the Ducks decide he is worthy of a recall at some point.
- The Dallas Stars have demoted defenseman Andreas Borgman to AHL Texas. However, with 36 players still on their training camp roster, the team has a ways to go. Borgman, 26, suited up for seven games with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season but appears to be no better than tenth on the Stars’ depth chart.
Anaheim Ducks Sign Ben Hutton To PTO
Better late than never, huh Ben Hutton? With most NHL teams trimming their training camp rosters down considerably over the past few days, the Anaheim Ducks have gone in the other direction. CapFriendly reports that the team has extended a PTO to veteran free agent defenseman Hutton. With Hutton unlikely to suit up for the Ducks tonight, he will have only two preseason games and just over a week of camp to prove he can stick with the team before they open the regular season on October 13.
The timing of this late tryout offer could imply that is is simply a precursor to a signing, merely getting Hutton into camp while the two sides hammer out the fine print on a contract. After all, it is not as if Anaheim is unaware of what Hutton brings to the table. The 28-year-old blue liner began the 2020-21 campaign with the Ducks after signing a one-year deal in free agency (another late-offseason deal). Hutton skated in 34 games with the team, recording five points and over 18:30 of ice time per night, before he was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a fifth-round pick. Hutton is an experienced defender who was logging major minutes and recording substantial minutes with the Vancouver Canucks not too long ago and would easily bolster a shallow Anaheim defense corps at a cheap price.
With that said, Hutton’s numbers have been on decline for years now and he did next to nothing with Toronto following last season’s trade. This PTO may simply be a courtesy by the Ducks to see if Hutton has any gas left in the tank and to let other teams take a look at his game in preseason action. While likely still a capable competitor, Anaheim may be better off going with younger options such as Josh Mahura or even Axel Andersson over Hutton, especially knowing that they do have some solid call-up options in Brendan Guhle, Brogan Rafferty, and Greg Pateryn. Hutton will have to show that he is a significantly superior option to any of these players if he wants to lock down a job with Anaheim.
Minor Transactions: 10/1/21
With minor league camps about to get underway, there will be an influx of players inking tryout deals at the lower levels. We’ll keep track of those moves here along with any other smaller moves of note.
- Hurricanes prospect Patrik Puistola is staying in Finland as Jukurit of the SM-liiga announced that they’ve added the winger and signed him to a two-year contract. The 20-year-old was a third-round pick of Carolina back in 2019 (73rd overall) and had 14 points in 50 games with JYP last season in his first full year at the professional level. This contract takes Puistola to the end of Carolina’s four-year period where they hold his rights so they will need to sign him at that time or lose him to free agency.
- The Canadiens have signed goalie Alex Dubeau to an AHL camp tryout, his agent Nicola Riopel announced (Twitter link). The 27-year-old spent last season in Washington’s system, playing in 26 games with South Carolina of the ECHL.
- While many teams are trimming their training camp rosters, the Ducks are adding to theirs, announcing the additions of winger Morgan Adams-Moisan and goaltender Frank Marotte to their camp roster. Adams-Moisan had 14 points and 123 penalty minutes in 37 games with Fort Wayne of the ECHL last season while Marotte posted a .917 SV% in a dozen contests with Allen of the ECHL last year while making two appearances with Bridgeport of the AHL.
Tobias Rieder Signs PTO With Anaheim Ducks
According to CapFriendly, the Anaheim Ducks have signed veteran forward Tobias Rieder to a professional tryout, adding him to the competition at training camp.
Rieder, 28, now has 478 regular season NHL games under his belt after playing 44 with the Buffalo Sabres this year. He registered just five goals and seven points in those games, however, continuing the pattern of offensive futility he has established over the last few seasons.
There was a time that Rieder could be counted on for around 15 goals and 30 points, but during a brutal goalless season with the Edmonton Oilers–one which sparked Edmonton’s then-CEO to go on an infamous rant to season ticket holders–that all seemed to change. The speedy forward had just four goals and ten points in 2019-20 with the Calgary Flames and is now fighting for a job in the NHL.
Even with his struggles, there is some upside to bringing a veteran like Rieder into camp. The Ducks have several young forwards fighting for a role on the team this season and players like Rieder will only serve to push them to work harder. He could perhaps land an NHL contract, but it’s not clear exactly how he’d fit in with the already overcrowded Anaheim roster.
