Snapshots: Marchand, Wiesblatt, Marlies

October 26, 2022 at 5:37 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

There was plenty of excitement around the Boston Bruins when Brad Marchand took reps on the first line and powerplay this morning, even leading the team stretch. But the star winger isn’t going to be coming back just yet.

The Bruins will still play it a little slow with Marchand, and while he is ahead of schedule, isn’t getting into the lineup just yet. Head coach Jim Montgomery told reporters including Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic that the Bruins expect Marchand to play before Thanksgiving, his original timeline.

  • NHL fans may remember a touching moment at the 2020 draft when the San Jose Sharks revealed their selection of Ozzy Wiesblatt with a bit of sign language so that his mother – who is deaf – could be in on the announcement. Now, after two additional seasons in the WHL Wiesblatt will be starting his professional hockey journey with the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL. He was assigned there today.
  • While the focus for the Toronto Maple Leafs the last couple of days has been on the health of Jake Muzzin, who was placed on long-term injured reserve, two other defensemen are getting closer to a return. Timothy Liljegren and Jordie Benn were both loaned to the Toronto Marlies on conditioning stints. Mikhail Abramov who started the year on season-opening injured reserve was also assigned to the AHL club.

Dallas Stars Recall Matej Blumel; Assign Jacob Peterson

October 26, 2022 at 4:51 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Dallas Stars had one more chance to send Jacob Peterson to the minor leagues before he would need to pass waivers, so they took it. The team has assigned Peterson to the AHL’s Texas Stars and recalled Matej Blumel, who is off to an outstanding start in North America. Had Peterson played one more NHL game, he would have been waiver-eligible.

Blumel, 22, was an Edmonton Oilers fourth-round draft pick in 2019 but failed to sign with the team before his exclusive rights expired. That made him an unrestricted free agent and he decided to come to North America following two excellent seasons in Czechia. Through five games with Texas he has been one of the best players in the AHL, scoring five goals and eight points.

He’ll now get a chance to join a Stars team looking for some consistency out of the lower part of their lineup. Denis Gurianov was made a healthy scratch recently but several Dallas players haven’t been able to find a groove. Gurianov, Jamie Benn, Ty Dellandrea, Joel Kiviranta, Luke Glendening, and Radek Faksa have combined for just three goals on the year, putting a lot of pressure on the top six to carry the load. While Blumel may not immediately change things, a shakeup certainly can’t hurt.

Peterson could have potentially been that answer himself, given he scored 12 goals in limited minutes last season and had only played once so far, but this may be more about protecting the asset than anything else. There will be a time that he gets back into the lineup but for now, the Stars have made the switch, giving him a chance to stay fresh in the minor leagues before his waiver status kicks in.

Toronto Maple Leafs Move Muzzin To LTIR; Clifford To IR

October 26, 2022 at 12:45 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

October 26: Muzzin has now been placed on LTIR retroactive to October 18, according to CapFriendly. The soonest Muzzin would be eligible to return to the Leafs’ lineup is now November 11, meaning they’ll be without him for at least the next two weeks. Kyle Clifford has also been moved to regular injured reserve, with Filip Kral recalled, filling his roster spot.

October 19: After their minor league club signed Danny DeKeyser to a PTO earlier today, the Toronto Maple Leafs have brought up another AHL defenseman to the active roster. Filip Kral has been recalled, as the team moves Jake Muzzin to injured reserve. Muzzin is out with a neck injury that will keep him out indefinitely.

Kral, meanwhile, could be looking at his first NHL game should he get into the lineup. The 22-year-old defenseman was a fifth-round pick of the team in 2018 and has developed nicely over the years, to the point of being one of the final cuts this fall. The 6’2″ Czech-born defender played three seasons in the WHL with the Spokane Chiefs, before returning home to play another year overseas.

Last season, he posted 21 points in 58 games during his first full season with the Toronto Marlies, and now he’s an NHL call-up just a week into the schedule. As David Alter of Sports Illustrated notes, Jordie Benn and Timothy Liljegren are both joining the Maple Leafs’ practice today, though neither can be removed from LTIR until November 5.

That means a little bit of runway for Kral, though it seems likely that Victor Mete will get the first crack with the main group tomorrow night.

Corey Schueneman Assigned To AHL

October 26, 2022 at 9:25 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It’s not often that you see a team send their extra defenseman down to the minor leagues before heading out on a road trip, unless of course, they are getting someone back from injury. That’s why there was instant excitement among Montreal Canadiens fans when the team announced that Corey Schueneman has been assigned to the Laval Rocket of the AHL.

The team is about to head out on the road and with them will be both Joel Armia and Joel Edmundson, though there still isn’t a concrete timeline on when they’ll be in the lineup. Neither player appears on the active roster currently, though Edmundson does not have an injured reserve designation any longer. The Canadiens will play in Buffalo tomorrow to kick off a four-game road trip where it seems likely that one, if not both, will return.

Edmundson, 29, has become something of a fan favorite in Montreal thanks to his stability and physicality on defense. He was an integral part of the team’s unexpected run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021 but has been in and out of the lineup ever since due to injury. Last season he managed to play in just 24 games, and his return on the upcoming road trip will be his season debut for 2022-23.

While this season may not be about winning a championship, you can bet that Montreal still wants to have Edmundson in the lineup around their young defensemen as much as possible. A Stanley Cup winner in 2019 with the St. Louis Blues, he can help them make the transition to the NHL while providing a reliable model to emulate on the defensive end. Edmundson was named an alternate captain before the season began, and is signed through 2023-24.

Brandon Davidson Signs AHL PTO

October 26, 2022 at 9:11 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Rochester Americans are bringing back a familiar face, signing Brandon Davidson to a professional tryout agreement. Davidson spent last season with the team while on a one-year, two-way contract with the Buffalo Sabres but was not re-signed this summer.

Now 31, Davidson’s time in the NHL appears to be over. The veteran defenseman has played just 28 games at that level since the start of the 2018-19 season, and spent all of last year in the minor leagues. Once a relatively effective bottom-pairing option that could bring defense and physicality to the table, he should no longer be considered an NHL-level player.

Still, that doesn’t mean he can’t be effective at the AHL level. Davidson is expected to meet the team for games this weekend. If he proves healthy and in shape, it’s easy to see the Americans extending him a full-season contract to add another veteran presence to the back end. A deal like this does not mean he can be recalled to the Sabres – he would need to sign an NHL contract for that to happen.

Minor Transactions: 10/25/22

October 25, 2022 at 4:30 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

Today sees an exciting 10-game slate on the schedule, including Phil Kessel’s expected record-setting 990th straight NHL game to cap off the night. As the AHL and ECHL schedules are now also getting into the swing of things, though, expect some more organizational activity at those levels as players continue to trickle in from the free-agent market. Today’s minor moves will be compiled here throughout the day.

  • The Abbotsford Canucks have announced the signing of top minor-league forward Kyle Rau to a one-year AHL contract. Rau is the all-time leading scorer in Iowa Wild franchise history, and the Minnesota native moves on after scoring 53 points in 55 games last year. The 30-year-old also brings 61 games of NHL experience to an Abbotsford club that’s been held back by poor goaltending to a .500 record so far on the season.
  • Forward Sean Josling is signing an AHL contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the rest of the season, the team announced today. Josling is in his third season with Pittsburgh’s ECHL affiliate, the Wheeling Nailers, and broke out for 33 points in 36 AHL games last season. He notched his first two AHL points in a 15-game loan to the San Diego Gulls in 2021-22.
  • The Rochester Americans are bringing back veteran defenseman Brandon Davidson, according to the AHL’s transactions page. Davidson actually signed a two-year KHL contract with Kunlun Red Star two months ago, but he never suited up for the China-based team and will now head back home. He’s played the past two seasons in the Sabres organization, racking up six points in 25 games with Rochester.

This page will be updated with any further transactions

Boston Bruins Activate Brandon Carlo; Send Jakub Lauko To AHL

October 25, 2022 at 3:14 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Boston Bruins have Brandon Carlo back, activating him from his latest stint on injured reserve with a concussion. To make room on the active roster, Jakub Lauko has been assigned to the AHL.

It’s good news for both Carlo and the Bruins that the 25-year-old was able to come back, having missed only a handful of games with this latest head injury. It is the fifth (documented) concussion that Carlo has had since entering the league. The big defenseman will skate next to Mike Reilly tonight as he makes his return against the Dallas Stars.

Unfortunately for Lauko, he’s a victim of contract status this time around. The young forward was the only waiver-exempt player on the roster, though there were other options the Bruins could have moved out. Reilly and Nick Foligno both have time left on their clock after clearing waivers earlier this month, meaning they could have been re-assigned instead. That wasn’t likely, but it was possible if they wanted to keep the 22-year-old in the lineup.

Lauko has been rather good so far in limited minutes, even if he does have only one point to show for it. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by A.J. Greer, who was made a healthy scratch even after his five-point start to the season. The 25-year-old has averaged just over ten minutes a night in the games he has played and will be on the fourth line with Foligno and Tomas Nosek tonight.

Philadelphia Flyers Loan Louis Belpedio To AHL

October 25, 2022 at 1:26 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

With the Philadelphia Flyers at home through the weekend and Rasmus Ristolainen back on the ice today at practice, Louis Belpedio has been loaned back to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL. Even with James van Riemsdyk’s injury news earlier today, the team has decided to open up the extra roster spot with Ristolainen and Owen Tippett close to returning.

Belpedio, 26, didn’t actually play in a game for the Flyers, despite being recalled over a week ago. The AHL standout, who mixes offensive upside with physicality (even from a relatively small frame), is the prototypical quad-A player – one that is excellent in the minor leagues but can’t lock down a full-time role in the bigs. He has just four NHL games in his career so far.

The Phantoms will be happy, though, after going 2-1-1 through their first four games of the season. Belpedio should give them another weapon on defense to go along with the likes of Ronnie Attard and Cam York. The Flyers meanwhile will be down to six roster defensemen until Ristolainen is activated.

Ottawa Senators Assign Kevin Mandolese To AHL

October 25, 2022 at 8:00 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Oct 25: It doesn’t matter who is in net for the Senators these days, they’ll win it anyway. After Hellberg secured the victory, the team has sent Mandolese back to the AHL.

Oct 24: After announcing this morning that Joshua Norris would miss at least two weeks, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the Ottawa Senators have moved him to injured reserve. The player the team has decided to recall in his place, however, will certainly cause some panic among the fan base. The team has called up goaltender Kevin Mandolese, and Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia tweets that Anton Forsberg was on the ice ahead of morning skate but did not participate in it.

That means Magnus Hellberg might be in line for his first start with Mandolese as the backup, something that no one would have expected a few weeks ago. As the season approached, it appeared as though the Senators would be going with a veteran tandem of Cam Talbot and Forsberg. After Talbot’s preseason injury and now Forsberg apparently dealing with something of his own, the team is onto a tandem with just five appearances at the NHL level.

Hellberg, 31, has all of them, though just one has come since 2017. The former Nashville Predators prospect left for the KHL at that point and spent five years playing overseas, before making his return as a member of the Detroit Red Wings last season. After signing a one-year deal with the Seattle Kraken, Hellberg was nabbed off waivers following Talbot’s injury and hasn’t yet appeared for the Senators.

Mandolese, meanwhile, has never played in the NHL and has just 29 appearances at the AHL level. The 22-year-old has posted an .863 in three starts this year with the Belleville Senators, allowing 11 goals on 80 shots.

If there is any silver lining, it is that after tonight against the Dallas Stars, the team won’t play again until Thursday. If Forsberg was healthy enough to get back on the ice this morning, perhaps he won’t miss much more time than this evening.

Snapshots: Samuelsson, Bear, Wright

October 24, 2022 at 7:43 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 8 Comments

Buffalo Sabres fans held their breath last night when freshly extended defenseman Mattias Samuelsson went down with an injury in their game against Vancouver. Now, The Buffalo News’ Lance Lysowski reports that Samuelsson avoided a long-term injury but is still set to miss at least “a few weeks,” joining Henri Jokiharju on the list of injured Sabres top-four defensemen.

An exact timeline won’t be had on Samuelsson until the team returns to Buffalo, head coach Don Granato said today, and the injury will force some depth defenders to shine in order for Buffalo to keep up its strong start. Lawrence Pilut will make his season debut in the team’s next game after two seasons overseas, and free-agent acquisition Ilya Lyubushkin will be tasked with replacing Samuelsson as the defensive anchor on the top pairing alongside the red-hot Rasmus Dahlin.

  • It’s no secret the Canucks are in trouble, winless so far to start the year. With injuries and general positional depth weakness hampering their defense, the team has been looking to add, and Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on 32 Thoughts that the team has checked in on defenseman Ethan Bear as a potential trade acquisition. Bear, the 25-year-old right-shot defenseman, has been thrust down the depth chart in Carolina and has yet to appear in a game this season. The Hurricanes were shopping him prior to the season’s start, and the Canucks have more than enough room thanks to LTIR to accommodate his $2.2MM cap hit. He still has some upside and could provide some better matchups once Quinn Hughes returns to the lineup.
  • Sportsnet’s Jason Bukala ponders whether the Seattle Kraken may opt to send Shane Wright back to the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs after an unimpactful start to the season. Wright hasn’t received many opportunities, he has shown smooth skating and pace, but Bukala points out that Wright’s had some positional issues defensively and may need a bit more development before being able to execute his playstyle properly at the NHL level.
