Golden Knights Make Several Roster Moves

The Vegas Golden Knights have made a flurry of roster moves today as they try and shake up their roster after being shutout for the fifth time this season last night. Jesse Granger of The Athletic is reporting that defenseman Lukas Cormier and forward Grigori Denisenko have been reassigned to the Henderson Silver Knights of the AHL, while forward Jonas Rondbjerg and defenseman Kaedan Korczak have been recalled to Vegas.

21-year-old Cormier had an assist during his NHL debut on January 6, was +1 and averaged almost 15 minutes of ice time in two games. He is in his second year in the AHL and has a goal and 11 assists in 27 games. The former third-round pick was a good offensive option for the Silver Knights last year as he had ten goals and 25 assists in 62 games.

Denisenko was held pointless in three games during his most recent recall. His AHL numbers on the other hand have been solid this year, in 31 games the former 15th overall pick has 12 goals and 18 assists. In four years as a professional, Denisenko has played 29 NHL games and has seven assists and no goals.

Rondbjerg is looking to get back into the Golden Knights lineup for the first time in almost two months, the 24-year-old had a recall earlier in the season and had a goal and two assists in six games. The 2017 third-round pick has had a decent offensive season in Henderson with four goals and 10 assists in 24 games this season.

Korczak showed promise during a two-month recall earlier in the season and will get another look with Vegas. The 22-year-old is typically known as a physical defensive defenseman but has shown some offensive upside in a limited sample size as he has a goal and six assists in 15 NHL games this season.

Vegas currently sits in second place in the Pacific Division with a 23-13-5 record. Despite the good start to the season, the Golden Knights have struggled as of late with a 3-7 record in their last ten games. They have also struggled on the road with a 9-9-3 record.

Oliver Kylington Loaned To AHL On Conditioning Basis

01/10/24: The Flames have issued a positive update on Kylington’s progress. He’s “trending towards playing” in the Wranglers’ game tomorrow night against the Ontario Reign. Should he end up playing, it will be Kylington’s first game action since May 2022.

01/04/24: The Calgary Flames have announced that defenseman Oliver Kylington has been sent to the team’s AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers, for the purpose of a conditioning assignment.

Following that announcement, the Flames issued a statement from Kylington which reads as follows:

I feel I’m in a good place with my mental health and ready to take another step forward. Returning to Calgary has been the right decision. I’ve felt tremendous commitment from Flames ownership, management, and my teammates, and I am appreciative of the support and resources made available to me. I also thank my family, friends, and the fans for their encouragement. I’m looking forward to getting on the ice in a team environment and back to my everyday life. I have missed it very much.

Kylington has not played since 2021-22, as he missed all of last season and so far all of 2023-24 for personal reasons. In early December, Flames head coach Ryan Huska gave an update on Kylington’s status, communicating that the Swedish blueliner was still a long way away from returning.

Now, according to today’s announcement, it appears Kylington is now far closer to a return to the NHL than it seemed a little more than a month ago. Kylington’s conditioning stint can last up to six days, or three games, whichever period is longer, although the Flames can request an extension of two games if they decide that would be necessary for Kylington’s fitness to play in the NHL.

Kylington, a pending UFA, has a $2.5MM cap hit that is currently placed on LTIR. The Flames would need to activate him off of that last to get him back onto their roster, though that shouldn’t be a major issue as CapFriendly currently projects them to have more than enough cap space to do so. The team also currently has an open roster spot on its 23-man roster.

As for where Kylington could slot in once he returns to the Flames’ lineup, it’s not immediately clear whether he’d immediately return to playing alongside veteran Chris Tanev. Tanev is currently playing next to Noah Hanifin, so it could be that Kylington takes Jordan Oesterle’s spot alongside MacKenzie Weegar, or Dennis Gilbert’s spot next to Rasmus Andersson.

In any case, this development is an extremely positive one for the Flames. The left side of their defense is notably thinner than their ironclad right side, so adding a player who scored 31 points in 73 games during his last NHL season will certainly help matters there.

West Notes: Zegras, Barabanov, Milne

After moving out Jamie Drysdale, some are wondering if Ducks GM Pat Verbeek might have another big move up his sleeve.  To that end, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports that Verbeek has discussed center Trevor Zegras with teams this season although it’s not known how far those discussions advanced.  After a tough contract negotiation that eventually yielded a three-year bridge deal with a $5.75MM cap hit, things have not gone well for the 22-year-old.  Injuries have limited him to 19 games heading into tonight’s action while he has struggled offensively with just four goals and three assists.  Unfortunately for Zegras and Anaheim, he suffered a lower-body injury during tonight’s game against Nashville in the first period and did not return.  Any extended absence could put the idea of a possible trade on hold fairly quickly.

  • Back in the summer, Sharks GM Mike Grier acknowledged that there was some merit to the idea of extending pending unrestricted free agent winger Alexander Barabanov. However, Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News reports that there have yet to be discussions about a new contract for the 29-year-old.  Like many San Jose players this season, 2023-24 has been a struggle for Barabanov who has just seven points in 20 games after coming off a career year that saw him collect 47 points in 68 games.  He has a $2.5MM cap charge and if a new deal isn’t reached, he’ll be one of their more intriguing trade chips in the coming weeks.
  • The Wild activated forward Michael Milne off season-opening IR and assigned him to AHL Iowa, Michael Russo of The Athletic reports (Twitter link). The 21-year-old is in his second professional season after picking up 13 points in 57 AHL contests last year and after missing the first few months of the season due to injury, is expected to play this weekend.  Milne was a third-round pick in 2022 (89th overall) after a breakout season offensively in the WHL that saw him put up 81 points in 68 games.

Ducks Recall Robert Hagg

When the Ducks moved Jamie Drysdale to Philadelphia as part of yesterday’s trade that saw them acquire prospect Cutter Gauthier, a spot on their back end was opened up.  It didn’t take long for them to fill it as Anaheim has recalled defenseman Robert Hagg from the minors, per the AHL’s transactions log.

The 28-year-old was an NHL regular on the blueline only a few years ago but injuries have limited him since then.  After only getting into 38 games last season with Detroit, Hagg didn’t have the strongest of markets last summer in free agency, resulting in him settling for a one-year deal at the league minimum.

The thought was that Hagg would provide some grit at the back of their back end with GM Pat Verbeek clearly making toughness a priority over the summer.  But things didn’t go quite as anticipated as Hagg wound up clearing waivers in training camp with several of Anaheim’s top defensive prospects getting roster spots instead.

Since then, Hagg has played regularly with the Gulls, getting into 22 games so far in his first taste of AHL action since the 2016-17 season and has four points in those appearances.  This is his fourth NHL recall of the season but he didn’t get any playing time in the first three.  He won’t be in the lineup tonight against Nashville so his season debut will have to wait a little longer.

Tampa Bay Lightning Make Several Roster Moves

01/08/24: The Lightning have now reassigned Thompson back to the Crunch. The 21-year-old made his NHL debut in Tampa’s 7-3 loss against the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

Skating as the Lightning’s seventh defenseman, Thompson received 11:39 time-on-ice in which he managed one shot on goal, two hits, and had a 32.59% expected goals share when on the ice according to Natural Stat Trick.

01/05/24: The Tampa Bay Lightning have announced that defensemen Emil Martinsen Lilleberg and Jack Thompson have been recalled from their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, while Sean Day and Declan Carlile have been sent down.

Day and Carlile were recalled yesterday, in the aftermath of Mikhail Sergachev’s placement on long-term injured reserve. As has been a trend for Day, his recall allowed him to serve as a healthy-scratched spare blueliner, but he did not dress for the Lightning’s game. Day has been up and down from the Lightning roster frequently over the last few weeks, and the last game he’s actually played in was on December 20th.

Carlile, 23, actually did get to play and made his NHL debut last night. He skated in almost 11-and-a-half minutes of ice time in yesterday’s game, and while he didn’t end up scoring his first NHL point he did manage two blocked shots, a hit, and a plus-one rating.

Replacing Carlile on the roster (and potentially on Tampa Bay’s third pairing) is 21-year-old Thompson, a right-shot 2020 third-round pick. Thompson is in the midst of his sophomore pro campaign and has had a strong start to the year in Syracuse, scoring 20 points in 31 games. He could make his NHL debut for Tampa tomorrow in Boston.

Although he’s a left-shot blueliner and Carlile’s spot in the lineup was on the right side, there’s a chance that Martinsen Lilleberg makes his NHL debut tomorrow instead of Thompson. The 22-year-old Norwegian defenseman was a 2021 fourth-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes who spent the last two years of his career with IK Oskarshamn in the SHL.

The Lightning signed him this offseason and he’s now playing his first career season in North America. He has 12 points in 31 games alongside 45 penalty minutes for the Crunch.

Minor Transactions: 01/07/24

It’s another busy day across the world of professional hockey, with four NHL games. Outside the NHL, the schedule is jam-packed with contests in the CHL and the various European professional leagues. Just as the schedule is packed with games, the transaction wire has had quite a bit of player movement activity. As always, we’ll keep track of those moves here.

  • The AHL’s Rochester Americans have announced a procedural move that will allow defenseman Nicolas Savoie to pursue educational opportunities rather than continue with the team playing pro hockey. The 21-year-old defenseman is set to play for the University of New Brunswick in the Canadian university hockey circuit, according to CBC Sports’ Ben Steiner. Savoie is an undrafted left-shot blueliner who emerged as a strong QMJHL defenseman for the Quebec Ramparts in 2021-22. He scored at least 44 points in each of his last two seasons playing junior hockey, and took home a Memorial Cup with Quebec to cap off his QMJHL career. He played in 21 ECHL games for the Jacksonville Icemen and three AHL contests in Rochester, and will now head to University before potentially trying his hand at the pro game once again.
  • Former Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael McNiven was released by the ECHL’s Savannah Ghost Pirates today, ending a tenure with the team that began in early December. The former CHL goalie of the year was traded from the Wheeling Nailers to Savannah after posting an .859 save percentage with the Nailers. He didn’t do much better in Savannah (0-3-1 with an .899) and will now have to look elsewhere to continue his career. He does have a strong pro campaign on his resume, though, from 2018-19 when he put up a .902 save percentage in 30 games for the AHL’s Laval Rocket.
  • 29-year-old Ross Olsson’s time with the Worcester Railers has ended after one game played. The six-foot-four forward, who captained the Orlando Solar Bears last season, was released by the ECHL club today. He signed with the team yesterday and played in their loss that same day before now receiving his release. Olsson is currently working in an off-ice role at a nearby school, so he seemingly was signed for fill-in duty for that single game as the Railers were likely in need of a capable player to fill in for that short period. Olsson has been a quality ECHLer in his time in the league, scoring 28 goals and 47 points last season.
  • The ECHL’s Maine Mariners have lost their second-leading scorer, Reid Stefanson, to Europe. The 26-year-old has signed with the ICEHL’s Vienna Capitals, according to a team announcement. Stefanson had a strong first campaign in pro hockey last year, as the UMass-Lowell product scored 22 goals and 47 points. He has 22 points in 22 games so far this season and will now begin his career in Europe in the Austrian capital.
  • The ICEHL’s HC Bolzano have swapped goalies, releasing former NHLer Niklas Svedberg and signing 25-year-old Samuel Harvey. The 34-year-old Svedberg joined Bolzano this past summer but struggled through 24 games with the club, putting up an .895 save percentage. Bolzano is a club with high expectations after losing in the ICEHL’s finals last season, so they’ve turned to Harvey. Harvey played for Bolzano last season and was stellar, posting a .922 in 22 games. He led them in the playoffs as well, which earned him a shot in Liiga with Lukko Rauma. Now after 20 games in Liiga the former QMJHL star has elected to return to Italy where he’ll look to go on another deep playoff run with the Foxes.

Devils Place Timo Meier On IR, Recall Max Willman

The Devils have made a pair of roster moves before tonight’s game against Vancouver.  The team announced (Twitter link) that winger Timo Meier has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to December 30th.  With the open roster spot, the team has recalled Max Willman from AHL Utica.

Meier has missed the last week with what was termed as a mid-body injury.  That came on the heels of him missing a couple of weeks with a lower-body issue earlier in the season as well.  The 27-year-old hasn’t had a great first full season with New Jersey, notching just nine goals with six assists through his first 28 games.  That’s not the type of output they were expecting when they acquired him from San Jose last season and signed him to an eight-year, $70.4MM contract back in June.  With the back-dated placement, he will have already missed seven days so he’ll be eligible to be activated as soon as he’s cleared to return.

As for Willman, he turned a PTO into a two-way deal in October and this will be his third recall of the season.  He has played in four games with New Jersey so far, picking up his first goal since the 2021-22 campaign with Philadelphia while logging a little over 11 minutes a night.  The 28-year-old has spent most of the year in the minors, notching nine goals and seven assists in 20 games so far.  Assuming Meier’s injury is a short one, it’s likely that this stint on the roster will be a short one for Willman.

Bruins Recall Jesper Boqvist, Assign Georgii Merkulov To AHL

With there being a bit of uncertainty with Boston’s lineup for tonight, the Bruins have opted to make a recall up front, announcing that winger Jesper Boqvist has been recalled from Providence.  To bring Mason Lohrei back up after being papered down yesterday, Georgii Merkulov was assigned to Providence as well.

The 25-year-old had 21 points in 70 games with New Jersey last season but was non-tendered back in June, making him an unrestricted free agent.  Boqvist eventually settled for a one-year, one-way contract worth the minimum salary of $775K a couple of weeks later with the hopes that he could lock down a full-time spot on Boston’s fourth line.

That hasn’t gone completely as planned as instead of securing a full-time spot, he cleared waivers at the end of training camp and has spent most of the season in the minors.  Boqvist has done well down there, picking up 10 goals and 13 assists in 31 games with Providence while also making a pair of appearances with Boston.

As for Merkulov, he played in four games with Boston while on recall, being held off the scoresheet while averaging 10:35 per night.  The 23-year-old has been quite productive with Providence, however, notching 14 goals and 16 assists in 31 games and should go right back to being in a top role for them.

As Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic notes (Twitter link), winger James van Riemsdyk is day-to-day so it would appear Boqvist’s recall is to help cover against that.  Lohrei could also take his place in the lineup if they want to go with seven blueliners while Matthew Poitras is also available after returning from his stint at the World Juniors.

Predators Recall Denis Gurianov

Denis Gurianov has been one of the top scorers in the AHL so far this season and he has been rewarded for his efforts.  The Predators announced that they have recalled the winger from AHL Milwaukee.

It has been quite the fall from grace for the 26-year-old in recent years.  He had a 20-goal campaign with Dallas in 2019-20 and looked like he’d be part of their long-term core.  However, Gurianov’s numbers had steadily dropped since then and near the trade deadline last season, the Stars moved on, sending him to Montreal in exchange for Evgenii Dadonov.

Things didn’t go much better with the Canadiens as Gurianov had just eight points in 23 games, resulting in the team declining to tender him a qualifying offer of $2.9MM, making him an unrestricted free agent last summer.

Gurianov’s market wasn’t particularly robust, resulting in him having to settle for a one-year, $850K one-way agreement.  The expectation was that he’d add a bit of offensive depth to a bottom-six group that didn’t exactly feature much firepower on paper.

However, that plan didn’t exactly pan out either.  After a tough preseason that saw him record just one assist in four games, Gurianov was waived and after clearing, was sent to the Admirals.  To his credit, he has fared quite well down there, leading the team in scoring with 30 points in 27 games, good for a tie for sixth in AHL points.  He’ll now get a chance to try to contribute to a Nashville attack that sits in the middle of the pack for goals, ranking 15th in that department.

Aaron Dell Signs PTO With AHL Ontario

Last month, the Hurricanes signed veteran goaltender Aaron Dell to a tryout agreement, loaning him out to Canada’s Spengler Cup entry a few days later.  While there hasn’t been an announcement from Carolina about him since then, it appears Dell was released as he has already found a new team. Per the AHL’s transactions log, the netminder has signed a tryout agreement with AHL Ontario, the affiliate of the Kings.

The 34-year-old has yet to play this season beyond his stint at the Spengler Cup where he had a 2.59 GAA and a .906 SV% in four games while losing in the semi-final.  Last season, Dell spent most of the year with AHL San Jose, posting a 3.14 GAA with a .898 SV% in 38 contests.  He also got into four games with the Sharks, extending his streak of years with an appearance at the top level to seven.  Dell had a 2.71 GAA and a .913 SV% in those outings, both better than his career averages of 2.92 and .905 respectively.

With Pheonix Copley on LTIR, David Rittich is currently up with the Kings so Dell figures to serve as the veteran backup to prospect Erik Portillo with the Reign.  Meanwhile, with Los Angeles being speculated to be searching for a veteran third-stringer, this signing could take them out of the trade market on that front with Dell being well-suited to fill that role for the time being.
