PHR Panel: Assessing Some AHL Standouts

April 13, 2020 at 7:18 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

We’re now several weeks into an NHL postponement and there is still no clear timeline on when professional hockey will return. While fans of the sport have received small tidbits of news over that time, including college signings and contract extensions, the thirst for discussion has rarely been quenched.

With that in mind, we’re happy to continue our new feature: The PHR Panel. Three times a week, our writing staff will give our individual takes on a question many hockey fans have been wondering about. If you’d ever like to submit a subject for us to discuss, be sure to put it in the comments. This series will run each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

To catch up on the previous edition, click here.

Today, we’ll each give our thoughts on a prospect that made his debut in the AHL this season.

Q: Name a 2019-20 AHL rookie that will have a strong NHL career

Brian La Rose:

Plenty of the top prospects in the AHL got a sniff of NHL action this season but someone who didn’t sits atop my list in Edmonton defenseman Evan Bouchard. While he had a brief recall, he didn’t get into any game action and instead spent the season honing his craft with AHL Bakersfield. That time was certainly well-spent as he worked to hone the defensive side of his game. He may need some more work in that regard but when Bouchard becomes an NHL regular, he’s going to make an impact quickly.

Offensively-skilled defensemen are getting more and more room to try to create offense and that’s Bouchard’s top skill. He was dominant at the junior level and had a solid first pro campaign with the Condors as well. Size and strength won’t be an issue for him either as he checks in at 6’3. These all work in his favor for becoming an impact player quickly.

There’s a case to be made that Bouchard could be Edmonton’s top offensive blueliner as soon as he’s in their lineup. Picture him setting up the likes of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and complementing them on the power play. That’s a recipe for running up the points right there which will make him a very important part of their core for many years to come. If he’s as productive as I think he can be in that system, it won’t be too long before he’s a highly-paid part of that core either.

Holger Stolzenberg:

While I do like players like Vegas’ Lucas Elvenes and Florida’s Owen Tippett, I have quite a few doubts on whether either player will even be given a real chance to become a top player for their teams. However, when I look at Anaheim Ducks forward Max Comtois, I see a player who could really have a nice NHL career.

The 21-year-old was already highly-touted, being a second-round pick back in 2017 and impressed out of camp quickly one year later, making the roster out of training camp, while the team allowed the forward to burn the first year of his entry-level deal by allowing him to play 10 games (he had seven points that year). When the team eventually sent him to the QMJHL, he dominated there in 2018-19.

This year has been even more successful for Comtois, who split time in both the AHL to develop his skills, while getting some practical time with the Ducks as well. Comtois finished with nine goals and 24 points in 31 AHL games as a rookie, while picking up AHL Rookie of the Month in February. He added another five goals and 11 points in 29 games and with the team in a full rebuild currently, Comtois will get every opportunity to take on a much bigger role next year and can be a constant in their lineup for years with the success he’s had so far in his young career.

Zach Leach:

If you want to find a prospect who looks like a perfect fit for his club’s style and culture, as well as long-term plans, look no further than Boston’s Jack Studnicka. The 2017 second-round pick is a young clone of Patrice Bergeron and looks like he could become a favorite of Bruins fans.

Studnicka plays a hard-working two-way game with plenty of skill involved as well. He led the AHL in short-handed goals this season by nearly double the next-best mark, while contributing on the power play and of course at even strength as well. Studnicka finished in the top-four in goals, points, and per-game scoring among AHL rookies and that was even while missing some time to play in Boston.

With Bergeron and David Krejci getting up there in age and heading toward the ends of long-term contracts, a changing of the guard could be coming to the Bruins sooner rather than later. While Studnicka may not be considered an elite prospect at this point, neither was Bergeron when he debuted in the NHL and Studnicka could follow in his footseps while replacing him in the lineup down the road. Few players are set up as well to take over for a future Hall of Famer.

Gavin Lee:

You can already read my thoughts on Joe Veleno and the career I believe is waiting for him in the NHL in one of last week’s panels, so I’ll just name another Grand Rapids Griffins rookie instead (apparently I’m a Red Wings fan lately).

Mortiz Seider was a shocking selection by the Red Wings when they took him sixth overall last June, while other more familiar names like Dylan Cozens, Trevor Zegras and Spencer Knight were still on the board. What we all may have overlooked was the teenager’s performance in the World Championship, which showed just how ready Seider was to play against professionals much older than him.

In his first year in the AHL, a league that has a very short history of teenagers, let alone teenaged defensemen, the then-18-year-old Seider recorded 22 points in 49 games and never looked out of place. The 6’4″ 207-lbs, right-handed defenseman turned 19 just a few days ago and likely could have spent time on Detroit’s blue line this year had the team been any more competitive. There’s no doubt that’s where he’ll end up in short order, but it’s his limitless ceiling as a top two-way defenseman that makes him so interesting. Did Steve Yzerman find his next Victor Hedman? (probably not, but boy was that a fun debut)

Ottawa Senators Sign Kevin Mandolese

April 13, 2020 at 1:20 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Ottawa Senators have added another interesting goaltending prospect to the organization, signing Kevin Mandolese to a three-year entry-level contract. Senators GM Pierre Dorion gave his thoughts on the new goaltender:

Kevin worked hard this past season to become one of the top goaltenders in the QMJHL. He’s positionally sound, has good lateral mobility and has proven adept at reading the play. Since being drafted, he’s been diligent about understanding what he needs to do both on and off the ice to be ready to be a pro goaltender. He’s shown an ability to make timely saves and, with more seasoning, should have an opportunity to secure wins for this team in the future.

Mandolese, a sixth-round draft pick from 2018, could have become an unrestricted free agent this summer but instead will sign with the organization that drafted him. The 19-year old recently completed an incredible season with the Cape Breton Eagles, posting a 26-8-1 record and a .925 save percentage that led all qualified QMJHL goalies.

The huge step forward that Mandolese took this season is promising for his professional future, which will likely start next season with the Senators organization. Ottawa is creating quite the pipeline of goalie prospects, with Marcus Hogberg, Filip Gustavsson, Joey Daccord now Mandolese all having bright futures.

Jonathan Aspirot Signs With Ottawa Senators

April 13, 2020 at 9:32 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

After an up-and-down rookie season, undrafted defenseman Jonathan Aspirot has done enough to earn an NHL contract. The Ottawa Senators have signed Aspirot to a three-year, entry-level deal, following his rookie campaign with the Belleville Senators of the AHL. Senators GM Pierre Dorion explained the signing:

Jonathan is a player, with credit to our amateur scouting staff, that we’ve kept tabs on since he was a development camp invitee in 2018. He’s long demonstrated great hockey sense and exceptional determination to the point where he became a regular among Belleville’s defence corps last season. His progression has collectively indicated to our hockey staff that he has become a legitimate NHL prospect.

The 20-year old Aspirot was never drafted out of the QMJHL after struggling to even find a consistent position at the junior level. Playing both defense and forward for the Moncton Wildcats, he has seemingly made the transition full-time to the blue line in Belleville and that’s where his potential future lies in Ottawa. That led to 16 points in 44 games for the baby-Sens, clearly enough—when paired with his defensive awareness and tenacity—to earn a contract. The second season of his two-year deal with Belleville will be voided in favor of this entry-level NHL contract.

For a rebuilding club like the Senators, lottery tickets like Aspirot are worthwhile investments as they try to find inexpensive NHL talent. While stars like the ones the team drafts this year will lead the next window of competition in Ottawa, Aspirot and others will have to fill in the depth chart.

Five Key Stories: 4/6/20 – 4/12/20

April 12, 2020 at 4:00 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While there aren’t any games going on at the moment, there was still a fair bit of news around the hockey world over the past seven days.

Barabanov To Toronto: Russian winger Alexander Barabanov had been fielding interest from numerous NHL teams in recent weeks and he made his choice on where to sign, inking a one-year deal with Toronto for 2020-21.  The deal is worth the entry-level maximum of $925K and does not contain any performance bonuses.  The 25-year-old had been playing with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL in recent years and had 46 points in 58 games in 2018-19.  Those numbers dipped this season (20 points in 43 contests) but that still didn’t stop the Maple Leafs among others from pursuing him.  It’s the second year in a row that Toronto has turned to this route to fill a roster spot after signing winger Ilya Mikheyev last offseason.

Another Positive Test: The Avalanche announced that another one of their players has tested positive for COVID-19.  They did not identify the player.  This is the third Colorado player to test positive while the Senators have had five players get the virus, all of whom have since recovered.  These are the only known cases among current NHLers.

Cave Passes Away: Tragedy struck this week as Oilers center Colby Cave passed away on Saturday at the age of 25.  He had been hospitalized earlier in the week and placed in a medically-induced coma after suffering a brain bleed.  He then underwent emergency surgery to remove a colloid cyst that was causing pressure on his brain soon after but remained in a coma until his passing.  At the time of his hospitalization, his agent indicated that this was not related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  Cave played in 67 career NHL games over parts of three seasons with Boston and Edmonton.  We join many in the hockey world in offering our condolences to Cave’s family and friends.

History Made In Switzerland: Florence Schelling had a stellar career in women’s hockey, representing Switzerland in ten World Championships and four Olympics while playing professionally in Canada, Sweden, and of course Switzerland.  Now she’s set to make her mark at the executive level and is making history in the process.  SC Bern of the Swiss NLA has hired the 31-year-old as their new sports director and general manager, making her the first female to be named GM of a top-tier men’s professional team.

Final Draft Rankings: While there is no word yet on when the 2020 NHL Entry Draft will be held after the event that was originally scheduled for late June was recently postponed, that hasn’t stopped NHL Central Scouting from releasing their final rankings.  As usual, players were grouped into four categories – North American Skaters, North American Goalies, International Skaters, and International Goalies.  The top-ranked players in each category are Alexis Lafreniere (Rimouski, QMJHL), Nico Daws (Guelph, OHL), Tim Stuetzle (Mannheim, DEL), and Yaroslav Askarov (St. Petersburg, VHL).

Ilya Sorokin Declines KHL Extension Offer

April 12, 2020 at 2:50 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Islanders have been waiting for Ilya Sorokin to come to North America for several years now.  It appears as if the wait may soon be over.  Sport-Express’ Igor Eronko reports (Twitter link) that Sorokin has turned down an extension offer from CSKA Moscow of the KHL, paving the way for him to sign with New York at the expiration of his current deal at the end of the month.

Sorokin was a third-round pick (78th overall) back in 2014 and has quickly outperformed that slot as he has become of the top goaltenders outside of North America.  This season, he posted a .935 SV% with a GAA of 1.50 and if you think those are impressive, they’re actually both worse than 2018-19 (.940 SV% and 1.16 GAA).  He was off to a stellar start in the playoffs as well with a .966 SV% and a 0.73 GAA before the postseason was eventually called.  While the KHL is a lower-scoring league, those are still appealing results and it’s no surprise that CSKA tried to get Sorokin to sign an extension.

Instead, it appears that the 24-year-old now has his sights set on the NHL where he should make his mark right away with the Islanders.  Assuming a deal gets done, it’s safe to pencil him in alongside Semyon Varlamov as New York’s tandem for next season.  That makes it seem unlikely on the surface that Thomas Greiss, a pending unrestricted free agent, will be back in the fold.

On the surface, it might seem like Sorokin would be leaving some money on the table in the short term as he’ll be restricted to a one-year, entry-level deal.  However, this stoppage could potentially present an opportunity for Sorokin to burn that year quickly.  As he was on the Islanders’ reserve list at the trade deadline, he’d be eligible to play if play resumes.  Accordingly, they could burn that year right away and get him out of the entry-level system quickly which is what Columbus did with Elvis Merzlikins just last season.

Accordingly, it may take a bit of time yet for an NHL deal to be announced as Sorokin’s side would undoubtedly want to wait to see what happens with the rest of this season and playoffs before putting pen to paper on a contract.  However, it appears that the wait to bring him to North America is about to come to an end.

No Extension Talks Between Islanders And Mathew Barzal

April 12, 2020 at 1:37 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

Some teams have been taking advantage of this pause in the schedule to talk about new contracts for their pending free agents.  The Islanders aren’t doing that with their top pending restricted in Mathew Barzal.  The center told reporters, including NHL.com’s Brian Compton, that there hasn’t been any talks about a new deal yet:

To be honest with you guys, I don’t think there’s been too much communication, and not because there’s anything negative or anything, it’s just Lou’s getting ready for a playoff run right now, and I’m still worried about this season as well.  I’m not too too worried about it, just because I don’t think the season is over yet. I think we’re still going to be playing.

There’s bigger things we’ve got to worry about right now in terms of heading to the playoffs this year. But at the same time, whenever we’re ready to sit down and get it done, I’d love for that to happen. At the same time, I’m not a person that’s just going to rush this thing or get nervous about it or whatever. I’m just going about my day, and it’ll happen when it happens.

While the 22-year-old hasn’t been able to get back to the numbers of his rookie season that saw him pick up 85 points in 82 games to earn him the Calder Trophy, he did reach the 60-point mark before the games stopped, the third straight year he has hit that mark.  He’s also their leading scorer for the third straight year which is quite impressive for someone that’s in his third full NHL season.

It’s that production that has made him one of the top restricted free agents this summer as he’s in line to get a substantial raise on his current $925K salary regardless of what happens with the salary cap as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  While Barzal didn’t touch on that in his comments, it’s likely that the potential for a lowered or flattened Upper Limit of the cap is playing a role in the lack of discussions right now.

Barzal has been a speculative candidate for an offer sheet all season long but GM Lou Lamoriello tried his best to pour cold water on that last month when he stated that he would match anything that his top forward could sign but until a new deal is agreed on, that will still linger.  In the meantime, it appears the focus is on the resumption of the season if and when that time comes.

Kings Sign Cole Hults

April 12, 2020 at 12:21 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Cole Hults has decided to forego his senior season and turn pro as the Kings announced that they’ve signed him to a two-year, entry-level contract that will begin in the 2020-21 season.  Per CapFriendly, the deal breaks down as follows:

2020-21: $925K salary (including signing bonus), $125K in performance bonuses, $70K AHL salary
2021-22: $925K salary (including signing bonus), $125K in performance bonuses, $70K AHL salary

The 21-year-old recently wrapped up his junior year with Penn State and had a strong season offensively.  He picked up eight goals and 22 assists in 34 games for the Nittany Lions, setting new career bests in both goals and points.  Those numbers helped him earn a spot on the NCAA West’s second All-American team.

Los Angeles drafted Hults back in the fifth round (134th overall) back in 2017 and he has outperformed that selection so far.  It’s likely that he will require some development time at the minor league level before making the jump to the NHL so he will almost certainly begin next season with the Ontario Reign of the AHL.

Scott Perunovich Named 2020 Hobey Baker Award Winner

April 12, 2020 at 10:58 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 5 Comments

Late on Saturday night, the NCAA announced (Twitter link) the winner of the 2020 Hobey Baker Award for the top NCAA men’s ice hockey player.  Blues prospect Scott Perunovich took home the prize, beating out Bruins prospect Jeremy Swayman and undrafted free agent Jordan Kawaguchi.

Perunovich becomes the sixth player from Minnesota-Duluth to win the award which is a record among NCAA teams.  The 21-year-old was named the NCHC’s top offensive defenseman for the third straight season after recording six goals and 34 assists in 34 games this season for the Bulldogs.

It has been an interesting journey for Perunovich when it comes to his NHL path.  Initially undrafted in his first two years of eligibility, he was vaulted onto the radar after his first college year which convinced St. Louis to pick him in the second round (45th overall) back in 2018.  Since then, his stock has only risen and he now stands as one of their top prospects.

Last month, Perunovich agreed to terms with the Blues on two separate entry-level deals, foregoing his senior season in the process.  Which contract ultimately gets signed will depend on what happens to the current season which is on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  If play resumes, Perunovich will burn the first year of his deal this season and will be eligible to play for St. Louis in the playoffs if they want to use him.  If not, the contract will begin in 2020-21.

Snapshots: Bilyalov, Jaskin, Combs

April 11, 2020 at 3:01 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 3 Comments

While the NHL has assured fans that the 2020-21 season will not be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and a number of international players and college prospects have signed contracts for next season based on that premise, KHL goaltender Timur Bilyalov is not feeling as comfortable with the league’s unknown future. Despite garnering interest from NHL teams, Bilyalov has opted to re-sign with Ak Bars Kazan on a one-year deal, citing doubts as to when the new NHL league year will begin. However, the 25-year-old specifically noted that he has not ruled out pursuing an NHL career in the future. Bilyalov was one the best goalies in the KHL this season, recording a .943 save percentage and 1.45 goals-against average in the regular season and even better numbers in an undefeated playoff run prior to the KHL’s cancellation of the season. Interest will undoubtedly renew this time next year if his top performance continues.

  • Former NHLer Dmitrij Jaskin also appears poised to re-sign in the KHL. RIA News in Moscow reports that Dynamo Moscow has come to terms on an extension for their star forward. Jaskin recorded 31 goals and 63 points in a dominant first season in the KHL. The power forward made the jump last off-season after failing to find a job in the NHL. He had played the previous six seasons with the St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals, totaling 27 goals and 69 points in 303 games, a mark he nearly topped in just one season back in Russia. Despite his impressive production this combined with previous experience in the league, Jaskin appears content to continue starring for Dynamo rather than seeking out another NHL opportunity.
  • The college transfer market is mostly used to make depth additions, but occasionally a program can find a diamond in the rough. Michigan State may have a good one on their hands in forward Charlie Combs. Combs announced that he will leave Bemidji State and join the Spartans for his senior season. The former BCHL standout had a slightly down 2019-20 campaign, but was one of the Beavers’ best players a season ago. He has compiled 60 points in three collegiate seasons and was on his way to an NCAA Tournament appearance this season with Bemidji State prior to the cancellation of the postseason. He will look to make the most of his final college season with a Michigan State team that was competitive in the Big Ten Conference this year.

NHL Entertaining Idea Of Neutral Site Games

April 11, 2020 at 1:53 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 8 Comments

Grand Forks, North Dakota got the ball rolling and now there may no stopping the movement. Of every possible way for the NHL to continue its season, the idea with the most traction appears to be neutral site locations where teams could play multiple games free of fans and the accompanying risks of the Coronavirus. North Dakota was the first location mentioned, followed by Manchester, New Hampshire, but now Deputy Commisioner Bill Daly tells ESPN that cities from around North America have contacted the league to pitch themselves as a potential host. Daly specifically names Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in addition to Grand Forks and Manchester, but the list keeps growing:

We do have people putting together the comprehensive laundry list of what we would need from facilities and evaluating some facilities on some level. But I can’t tell you we’ve even finished creating a list [of potential sites], much less narrowed it down.

The NHL’s goal if at all possible is to complete the regular season and host a complete postseason in some form or fashion. The league has also stated that they will not shorten the 2020-21 season to accommodate the completion of the 2019-20 season, but that a condensed campaign could be a possibility should play resume and extend deep into the summer. These are just some of a number of questions still facing the league, as Daly notes:

It’s kind of a combination of things, like when we can start a regular season [in 2020-21] and how much time we need for an off-season, and then what does the playoff format look like… I would say that a best-of-one is not something we would ever go to. I’ve always had the caveat that everything is on the table and nothing is out of the question. I would say there would be a strong opposition to ever creating a playoff where it was a single elimination. I think best-of-three is more possible, not preferred, but more possible.

Before the NHL gets around to a playoff though, they seem determined to complete the regular season. With 25 of the league’s 31 markets currently unable to even open team facilities nevertheless host games, the neutral location concept seems to be the most realistic route at this point, though Daly makes it clear that there is still plenty of work to be done on the idea. Yet, at this point fans will cling to just about any hope they can of a return for hockey and a neutral site continuation of the regular season followed by some form of postseason would  be very well received by all.
