Calvin De Haan To Make Full Recovery From Eye Injury

March 12, 2019 at 3:31 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It was a scary moment for Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Calvin de Haan when Alexander Kerfoot’s stick came up and hit him in the eye during last night’s game. The veteran defenseman writhed in pain on the ice for a few moments before leaving the game and travelling to a nearby hospital. GM Don Waddell updated the situation with some great news today, indicating that de Haan avoided serious injury.

Calvin sustained an injury to his right eye last night, but was released from the hospital in time to make the flight home with the team. At this point, his eye is responding as we would hope. We are optimistic that he will make a normal recovery without restrictions to his ability to play hockey in the near future.

de Haan, 27, has come back strong this season after dealing with injury for much of 2017-18. Signing a four-year, $18.2MM deal with the Hurricanes in the offseason, he has stepped into a valuable role for the team as one of their key penalty killers. Logging nearly 19 minutes a night, de Haan also leads the team in hits with 169 and has contributed 14 points on the season.

Getting him back in the lineup quickly will be important for Carolina, who suddenly have jumped into a divisional playoff spot in the Metropolitan. With a 7-2-1 record in their last ten, the team now sits just four points behind the New York Islanders for second in the division and four points clear of a Columbus Blue Jackets team sitting in the final wild card position. There’s no guarantee that they’ll make the postseason, but having de Haan healthy and on the ice in the coming weeks will certainly help.

The team has recalled Haydn Fleury from the AHL under emergency conditions for the time being.

Three Princeton Free Agents Sign NHL Contracts

March 12, 2019 at 3:02 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Princeton Tigers head coach Ron Fogarty may be disappointed with the way his hockey club’s season ended, but today he’ll be proud of several of his players. Three Princeton free agents have signed entry-level contracts. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports on each, tweeting that Max Veronneau has signed with his hometown Ottawa Senators, Ryan Kuffner is heading to the Detroit Red Wings, and Josh Teves will sign with the Vancouver Canucks.

Veronneau, 23, signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Senators after nearly the entire league expressed interest in him. That two-year deal is all he could sign at his current age, but the Senators have offered him the chance to burn the first year immediately by joining them for the rest of the season. Veronneau will be in Ottawa in time for practice on Wednesday. GM Pierre Dorion explained the process of signing another prospect:

We are very excited to have Max join the Ottawa Senators. We aggressively pursued Max, whose talents made him one of the highly sought-after college free agents available this year. He plays the game with tremendous pace and has terrific offensive instincts. Max will be given the opportunity to compete to be part of the Senators team, both now and in the future.

The talented forward had 37 points in 31 games this season after trailing only Adam Gaudette in 2017-18 with 55 points. He had previously attended development camps with several teams, and has been on the radar as a potential college signing for years. Veronneau will become a restricted free agent after the 2019-20 season.

Kuffner meanwhile actually led Princeton in scoring this season with 44 points and is certainly another sought after talent. The 22-year old forward is also from the Ottawa area and was a star in the CCHL before heading to college. In four years at Princeton the 6’1″ winger recorded 152 points in 132 games, and will join a Red Wings organization that is slowly rebuilding their talent pool after many years of Stanley Cup contention. Like Veronneau, Kuffner has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings that will start this season, making him a restricted free agent in the summer of 2020.

Teves, the lone defenseman of the trio is also the oldest at 24 but has had great success as a puck-mover over the years. The Calgary-born Teves has signed a one-year entry-level deal with Vancouver given his age, and if it is for this season—which Rick Dhaliwal of Sportsnet has heard it is—it would make him a restricted free agent in just a few months. He’s certainly familiar with the area, given he attended Canucks development camp and played much of his junior hockey in British Columbia.

Chicago Blackhawks Sign Philipp Kurashev

March 12, 2019 at 1:04 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Chicago Blackhawks have inked one of their intriguing forward prospects, signing Philipp Kurashev to a three-year entry-level contract. Kurashev is currently playing with the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL, where he will remain for the rest of this season.

Kurashev certainly didn’t make headlines when he was selected 120th overall in the 2018 draft, but a few months later he was the talk of junior hockey. That came at the most recent World Junior tournament where the 19-year old led the field with six goals in seven games for Switzerland, impressing everyone in attendance with his slick puck skills and ability to finish around the net. Kurashev returned to the Remparts where he has 28 goals and 62 points in 57 games, easily leading the team in both categories.

The talented forward was actually ranked much higher than his eventual draft position by many outlets, and he’ll now get the chance to prove that he should have been a higher selection. Turning 20 in October means his contract will kick in for the 2019-20 season regardless of where he plays, making him a restricted free agent in the summer of 2022.

Cooper Zech Signs With Providence Bruins

March 12, 2019 at 12:30 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Boston Bruins organization has signed an undrafted college free agent, but not to an NHL contract. Cooper Zech has agreed to a two-year AHL contract that will kick in next season according to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal. Zech will join the Providence Bruins for the rest of this year on a tryout contract.

Divver states that Zech “wanted out” of Ferris State University, where he played just one season. The 20-year old defenseman went undrafted despite putting up points at every level, likely because of his small frame. The 5’9″ Zech didn’t let his stature stop him from performing on the collegiate stage though, as he recorded 28 points in 36 games. The left-handed puck-mover is another lottery ticket, though Boston doesn’t actually own his rights given the AHL contract.

Still, Zech will jump into the organization’s player development system and could very well earn himself an NHL entry-level deal down the road. There might be quite a bit of time before that happens, but he’ll have the benefit of working with professional coaches while earning a minor league salary. At this point he will also not count towards Boston’s 50-contract limit.

Rangers May Have To Wait To Sign Vitali Kravtsov

March 12, 2019 at 12:00 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 4 Comments

Tuesday: Igor Eronko of Sport-Express tweets today that Traktor GM Evgeny Gubarev told him the team won’t be terminating Kravtsov’s contract. That would mean the young forward is not able to sign a contract this season, or play in any games for the Rangers.

Sunday: The New York Rangers continue to negotiate with KHL team Traktor Chelyabinsk to get their top prospect and 2018 first-round pick, Vitali Kravtsov to come to New York, but there is no guarantee that the Rangers will be able to get a deal done, according to Larry Brooks of the New York Post.

Kravtsov, the ninth-overall pick, stayed in Russia this season and put up solid numbers as a 19-year-old in the KHL, including eight goals and 21 points in 50 games. However, despite Traktor Chelyabinsk eliminated from the KHL playoffs last Monday, Kravtsov’s contract still runs through April 30th, which means the Rangers must work out a deal to release him from his deal even if he has no games let to play. The team would like to bring him to North America, so the 19-year-old can get acclimated to the U.S. as quickly as possible.

To make matters even more complex, there is a question of whether the team wants to sign him right away to an entry-level deal this year. With 14 games remaining in New York’s season, the team would probably like to avoid burning the first-year of his deal, which would force the Rangers to have to protect him in the eventual expansion draft for the Seattle franchise. If he doesn’t begin that entry-level deal until next year, Kravtsov would be exempt from the expansion draft which would allow the Rangers to protect one extra player in 2021.

Unfortunately for New York, Brooks also adds that an Amateur Try Out (ATO), which would allow Kravtsov to play with the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack, is also highly unlikely. That would suggest that the team may not bring him over until this summer, and because he’s a candidate to play for Russia at the World Championships this summer, he may not arrive until late summer.

NCAA Notes: Duszak, Hirose, Teves, Snively

March 12, 2019 at 10:35 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

As college seasons came to an end in recent days, interest in undrafted free agents has increased. Here’s the latest on several of the top names:

  • Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs have shown interest in right-handed defenseman Joseph Duszak from Mercyhurst University. Duszak fits in perfectly with the kind of selections GM Kyle Dubas has made over the last few years, and plays with an incredible amount of puck skill. Duszak led his team with 47 points in 37 games this season and is still just 21 years old.
  • Bob McKenzie of TSN already reported this morning that Max Veronneau was being pursued by nearly the entire league, but also notes that Ryan Kuffner from Princeton and Taro Hirose from Michigan State could make their decisions today or tomorrow. Hirose, a Calgary native, led the entire NCAA with 50 points this season and is sure to draw interest from all around the league.
  • Rick Dhaliwal of Sportsnet reports that the Vancouver Canucks have shown interested in Josh Teves from Princeton, another right-handed defenseman that experienced a lot of success at the collegiate level. Teves has recorded 78 points across his final three years at Princeton, but is already 24 and would be signing a one-year entry-level deal with whoever he chooses.
  • Frank Seravalli of TSN reports that even though Yale is still in the ECAC playoffs, Joe Snively has received interest from at least 20 NHL teams. Snively has long been an excellent offensive producer at the NCAA level, recording at least 28 points in each of his four years at Yale.

Senators, Oilers Making “Major Push” To Sign Max Veronneau

March 12, 2019 at 9:43 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It’s college free agent season and one of the top names available is Princeton’s Max Veronneau. The 23-year old forward recorded 37 points in 31 games this year and has apparently attracted teams from all around the NHL. Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that at least 25 teams had expressed interest in Veronneau, who is an unrestricted free agent and can sign anywhere he wants.

According to McKenzie, both the Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers are teams making a “major push” to sign Veronneau, who enters the market as one of the most dynamic free agents available. The Ottawa native recorded 144 points in 130 games during his Princeton career, including a whopping 55 last season to trail only Adam Gaudette for the leading scorer in the nation. Adding that kind of offensive presence for nothing more than a contract slot is exactly what teams like the Senators and Oilers have to do in order to fill their ranks and build a successful program.

Veronneau has previously spent time with the Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils and Los Angeles Kings in various development camps, but it is not clear if those teams have made an effort to sign him.

Because Veronneau is already 23, the maximum contract he can sign is a two-year entry-level deal. Teams could potentially offer up the chance to burn the first year of that deal by signing it for this season, a negotiating tactic top college players often take. That would mean Veronneau would become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2020, though we’ll have to wait and see what he secures in the coming days.

Minor Transactions: 03/12/19

March 12, 2019 at 9:32 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It’s another important night in the NHL playoff race, as teams like the Columbus Blue Jackets and Arizona Coyotes get a chance to make up some ground. They’ll take on the Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues respectively in two of the eight match-ups scheduled for this evening. As teams prepare for the action, we’ll be here keeping track of all the minor moves.

  • The Bruins have recalled Trent Frederic under emergency conditions in time for their game against the Blue Jackets tonight. Frederic, 21, has zero points in his 11-game NHL career so far but will try to change that when he gets back into the lineup tonight. The 2016 first-round pick has 20 points in 45 games with AHL Providence this year.
  • Haydn Fleury has earned another call-up from the Carolina Hurricanes, marking his eighth promotion of the year. Buried in the organization’s loaded blue line depth, Fleury has skated in just 14 games with the ’Canes this season after playing in 67 last year. The 2014 No. 7 overall pick will take any chance he can get to get back into the Carolina lineup.

West Notes: Coyotes, Ward, Cecconi, Clague

March 11, 2019 at 8:55 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

While there have been various reports throughout the season that the Coyotes were making progress on finding someone to add to their ownership group, Richard Morin of the Arizona Republic reports that no progress has been made on that front or their ongoing arena situation.  He notes that the club approached the NBA’s Phoenix Suns regarding a possible partnership of a downtown area but that Suns owner Robert Sarver wasn’t interested in such a venture.  With owner Andrew Barroway continuing to look for someone to add to the ownership group, it’s likely that this will be the focus for now and that arena talks will be on the backburner for the foreseeable future.

Elsewhere out West:

  • The Blackhawks will likely be without goaltender Cam Ward for at least another week due to his knee injury, notes Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times. The injury was sustained a week ago with an expected return timeline of seven-to-ten days so it appears he’s behind schedule in his recovery.  In the meantime, Corey Crawford will continue to get the bulk of the work as he continues to work his way back following another concussion while youngster Collin Delia will remain as the backup.
  • Stars blueline prospect Gavin Cecconi is still leaning towards eschewing signing with Dallas and opting for free agency, reports Sean Shapiro of The Athletic (subscription required). The 2015 draft pick wrapped up his senior year with Michigan and may be looking to the open market in the hopes of finding a quicker path to playing time as when healthy, Dallas has good defensive depth.  The Stars will hold Cecconi’s rights up to August 15th.
  • Kings prospect Kale Clague has a broken bone in his foot that will keep him out of the lineup for the next four weeks, relays Curtis Zupke of the LA Times (Twitter link). The defenseman has had a decent start to his professional career with 29 points in 52 games with AHL Ontario and he had a chance to be a recall down the stretch to get him some NHL experience.

Canucks Prospect Will Lockwood To Decide About Turning Pro Next Week

March 11, 2019 at 7:05 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

Yesterday, the Canucks officially signed their top prospect in defenseman Quinn Hughes to an entry-level deal.  A decision from their other Michigan prospect will take a little while longer as the team announced (Twitter link) that winger Will Lockwood is expected to wait until next week before choosing whether or not to turn pro.

Lockwood was Vancouver’s third-round pick (64th overall) back in 2016 and he just completed his junior season with the Wolverines.  It was by far his best one as his 31 points (16-15-31) in 36 games matched his combined point total from his freshman and sophomore campaigns.  The 20-year-old finished second to only Hughes in scoring in 2018-19.

By delaying his decision until next week, Lockwood won’t be able to reach the ten-game mark that would qualify as an accrued season and make him eligible for the Seattle expansion draft if he decides to forego his senior year.  However, if he decides to stay at Michigan for next season, he will have played out his college eligibility and would be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in August of 2020.
