Zuccarello, Point Will Wait Until Season’s End To Negotiate Next Contracts

The Dallas Stars went out and acquired Mats Zuccarello at the deadline in order to give them some extra secondary scoring, but lost him almost immediately to a broken arm. While he should be back in time to contribute during the playoffs (should Dallas get there), the former New York Rangers forward isn’t using the time off to negotiate his next contract. In fact, Stars GM Jim Nill told Matthew DeFranks of Dallas Morning News that the team will wait until the season is over to discuss any contract extension with Zuccarello.

Nill of course has more to consider than just salary structure and cap hit when it comes to Zuccarello’s next contract. If the Stars decide to re-sign the diminutive forward, they would sacrifice a 2020 first-round pick instead of the third-round selection they sent to the Rangers as part of the package to acquire him at the deadline. Without seeing his impact on the team over a longer term it’s hard to say whether that would be worth it.

In Tampa Bay they are facing a similar situation with young star Brayden Point. Unlike Zuccarello who is set for unrestricted free agency, Point is still controlled as a restricted free agent but will be looking for a huge contract after proving himself to be such an important piece of the Lightning puzzle this season. To that end, Point—who turned 23 today—has told Lightning GM Julien BriseBois that he doesn’t want to negotiate until the end of the year, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic (subscription required). That affords Point another chance to prove he is worth as much as any of his RFA contemporaries, especially if he helps lead the Lightning to a Stanley Cup this season.

In 68 games this season the Tampa Bay forward has amassed 83 points while being one of the most consistent defensive players in the entire league. He leads the Lightning in goals with 37 and would have a case for team MVP if it weren’t for the existence of Nikita Kucherov. A third-round pick in 2014, Point has consistently improved every year and looks like he will be a superstar for a long time in the NHL. It will be interesting to see if he wants to be paid like it right away, or is willing to take a bridge deal like Kucherov did in 2016.

Brian Lashoff Signs Two-Year Extension

The Detroit Red Wings have signed Brian Lashoff to a two-year two-way contract extension worth $700K at the NHL level. The veteran defenseman was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but will now be with the organization until the summer of 2021.

Lashoff, 28, has played just six NHL games since the 2014-15 season but is an important part of the Grand Rapids Griffins. A two-time Calder Cup champion, Lashoff is a reliable defensive presence that brings size and leadership to the organization, mentoring the Red Wings next wave of young talent. With players like Filip Hronek and Dennis Cholowski such an important part of the future for Detroit, having someone like Lashoff to set an example in the minor leagues is valuable.

Still, this extension will likely have little on-ice impact for the Red Wings. Lashoff has been used as an injury replacement but does not have much of a future as a Red Wings player. He’ll need to clear waivers next fall in order to be sent back down, but that shouldn’t cause much of an issue.

Snapshots: Draft Ranking, NTDP, Gendron

Sportsnet’s Sam Cosentino has a new top prospect for the 2019 draft, as Kaapo Kakko has overtaken Jack Hughes in his latest ranking. The Finnish forward has found success this season everywhere he has played including the top league in his home country, and has plenty of upside as a franchise-changing talent at the top of the draft. Hughes still slots into the second spot, though Cosentino admits he is still unlikely to fall that far in the actual draft.

An interesting placement on this list is Philip Broberg, who is all the way down at 18. The Swedish defenseman has been considered a potential top ten pick by some scouts, but Cosentino questions the offensive upside in his game. Broberg did not make a huge impact at the World Juniors and has just nine points in 41 games for AIK in the Swedish second league.

  • Looking even further into the future, USA Hockey has released their 52-man roster for the National Team Development Program evaluation camp today. The list includes quite a few familiar names, including Luke Hughes (younger brother of Jack and Quinn Hughes) and Luke Mittelstadt (younger brother of Casey Mittelstadt). This camp will provide the roster for the National U17 team this season and will be held at the end of March in Plymouth, Michigan.
  • While the Ottawa Senators wait for the above players to become available, they have added another prospect of their own to the organization. The Belleville Senators have signed Miles Gendron to an AHL contract for 2019-20, while he’ll join the Brampton Beast on an ECHL deal for the rest of this season. Gendron played four seasons at the University of Connecticut, serving as captain this year.

Gary Bettman Upholds Jakub Voracek Suspension

The NHL commissioner has reviewed the facts and conducted a hearing with Jakub Voracek and his NHLPA representatives, but does not believe the two-game suspension was unwarranted. Gary Bettman released his decision today to uphold the ban, given to Voracek for an incident with Johnny Boychuk in a game on March 9th. Voracek has already missed one game for the Philadelphia Flyers, and will be forced to sit out tomorrow night as well. He will also forfeit more than $88K in salary. From the decision:

While I accept Mr. Voracek’s explanation that he thought Mr. Boychuk was going to initiate a check, the video makes it clear that it was Mr. Voracek who initiated the contact. At the hearing, it was acknowledged that Mr. Voracek had other options available to him, but instead Mr. Voracek moved into Mr. Boychuk’s path by taking a step to the left and driving upwards into Mr. Boychuk. The onus was on Mr. Voracek to avoid causing a significant blow to Mr. Boychuk’s head. The force was significant enough to cause Mr. Boychuk to require medical attention on the ice and he did not return for the balance of the game. It is worth acknowledging that during his long career in the NHL, Mr. Voracek has maintained a strong character and a clean record with no prior supplemental discipline history. However, that does not absolve Mr. Voracek of the responsibility to play this game in a safe manner in accordance to the applicable rules.

The decision also explains how Voracek would not have appealed a one-game suspension, and that he was seeking a reduction to that level. These kind of short-term suspensions are never appealed in this manner and as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet points out, they can not be taken to an independent arbitrator now that Bettman has made his ruling. Obviously Voracek believed he was being unfairly punished, especially given his lack of discipline history.

Philadelphia will now have to hope they can take down the Washington Capitals tomorrow night without one of their key offensive pieces, a task that quite literally could decide their season. The team is currently sitting five points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the final wild card spot and can’t afford to slip any further in the standings.

Thomas Chabot Out With Broken Toe

The Ottawa Senators have had a bright spot all season in Thomas Chabot, who has developed into a top defenseman in the NHL at a very young age. Unfortunately that bright spot will be snuffed out for at least a few weeks, as Chabot deals with a broken toe. Brent Wallace of TSN reports that the team has listed Chabot as week-to-week, but are hopeful he can play again this season. The Senators finish their season on April 6th, three and a half weeks from now.

Chabot, 22, has racked up 49 points through 62 games this season, establishing an early career high and proving himself to be one of the most dynamic offensive weapons in the league. Logging more than 24 minutes per night for the Senators, Chabot is a huge centerpiece for their rebuild and will be relied upon moving forward.

Unfortunately, that may have to wait until next season if he doesn’t recover quickly. There’s not much point in rushing him back, though the Senators have said that they’re trying to win as many games as possible down the stretch. Tanking for a higher draft pick isn’t a problem for them, but they seem destined to finish in last place.

Toronto Maple Leafs To Sign Joseph Duszak

Wednesday: The Maple Leafs have officially signed Duszak to a two-year entry-level contract, but notably the deal is termed a “future” contract likely meaning it doesn’t kick in until the 2019-20 season. That would afford the Maple Leafs another year under the inexpensive deal, but would prevent Duszak from suiting up for the NHL team this season. Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports that Duszak will join the Toronto Marlies on a tryout contract for the rest of this season.

It’s not often that top college free agents agree to start their entry-level deals in the future, usually signing with the team that offers to burn that first season right away. The 21-year old apparently decided that the Maple Leafs were still the best option for his development, to the benefit of the team. He’ll be a restricted free agent in the summer of 2021.

Tuesday: The Toronto Maple Leafs have had trouble finding long-term options for the right side of their defense, so they have taken a swing with a college free agent. College Hockey News’ Mike McMahon reports that the team has signed Mercyhurst University defenseman Joseph Duszak to an entry-level contract. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman  also indicated that the Leafs have been looking at Duszak for some time and now have their man. An official announcement with contract terms is expected soon.

Duszak, 21, just completed a stellar NCAA season by any metric. Not only did he lead all defenseman in scoring, but the talented blue liner finished third overall in scoring with 47 points in 37 games. He also led Mercyhurst across the board with goals, assists, and plus/minus. After three productive collegiate seasons, it was clear that there was little development left for Duszak at Mercyhurst. The standout junior has a veteran hockey sense and great vision and play-making ability. The Athletic’s prospect guru Scott Wheeler opined early this season that he “makes plays every time he’s on the ice” and encouraged an NHL team to sign him. The puck-moving defenseman clearly has some impressive skill on the offensive side, but plays a competent defensive game as well. His potential has caught the eye of several teams, writes McMahon, including Toronto’s division rival, the Boston Bruins.

The only concern for Duszak is how he will adjust to playing against much tougher competition. The Atlantic Hockey Conference is the NCAA’s weakest and Duszak has racked up his numbers while playing against underwhelming opposition. He’s also on the smaller side at 5’10”, 185 lbs. and that may become a bigger factor when he can’t simply skate circles around the other team. However, Duszak’s play also came on an equally weak Mercyhurst team and he has had to play in all situations for the Lakers. His production over the last few years is nothing to write off, but there is likely work to be done if he wants to replicate it in the pros. The Maple Leafs would love for Duszak to replace Sean Durzi, the small, right-handed possession defenseman they recently traded away to the Los Angeles Kings, but only time will tell if he can establish the same ceiling as the recent second-round pick.

Minor Transactions: 03/13/19

The NHL is quiet on this Wednesday evening, with only three games on the schedule. In Edmonton, the Oilers will try to keep their season alive against the New Jersey Devils, while in Toronto they just try to forget the beat down they suffered earlier this week. With most of the league resting today, there will likely be several minor moves to keep track of. Like always, we’ll do that right here.

  • The Boston Bruins have recalled Paul Carey from the minor leagues according to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal. Carey has 20 points in 21 games since being acquired by the Bruins in mid-Januaray, and could potentially jump right into the NHL lineup. The 30-year old forward has long been an excellent scoring threat at the minor league level, but has totaled just 16 points across 97 NHL appearances.
  • The Bruins have also recalled Connor Clifton from Providence, while assigning Peter Cehlarik back down to the AHL. Clifton, 23, has played in just nine NHL games this season but has been dynamic in the minor leagues with 27 points.
  • Colton White was returned to the minor leagues last night, without actually getting a chance with the New Jersey Devils. The 21-year old defenseman has 25 points in 61 games for the Binghamton Devils this season, but will have to wait a little longer to make his NHL debut.
  • The Ottawa Senators have sent Filip Chlapik back down, since he was only on an emergency recall. The young forward will get plenty of opportunity in the coming years to make an impact for Ottawa, but for now will continue his development with the Belleville Senators.
  • With Robin Lehner getting ready to make his returned to the New York net, the Islanders have reassigned Christopher Gibson back to the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The 26-year-old Finnish keeper has been stellar in two appearances with the Isles this season, posting a .941 save percentage and 1.50 GAA in two periods of relief. However, he may be yet another beneficiary of the team’s system; his underlying AHL numbers – a .900 save percentage and a 2.89 GAA – and his previous NHL outings suggest he’s still not playing at an NHL level.
  • The AHL’s Hershey Bears have signed veteran Joey Leach to a contract for the remainder of the season. Leach, 27, had been loaned to Hershey from their AHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, but did enough in 17 games with the Bears to earn a contract. Leach was both the captain of the Stingrays and one of their most valuable player. He had 20 points in 28 games with the team prior to his loan, suiting up at both defense and forward.

Kasperi Kapanen Diagnosed With Concussion

The Toronto Maple Leafs kept Kasperi Kapanen out of the lineup on Monday with what they deemed as an illness, but gave a more serious diagnosis today. Kapanen will be held out again tonight because of a concussion, sustained at some point during the game in Edmonton on Saturday night.

Kapanen, 22, has been a welcome addition to the Maple Leafs this season, recording 42 points in 68 games in his first real opportunity as a full-time NHL player. Originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins, he came to Toronto in the Phil Kessel deal several years ago and had only really found his way to the Maple Leafs roster late last year. The speedy winger has developed into an excellent counter-attack option that can make teams pay for turning the puck over, and is even used as a penalty killer by head coach Mike Babcock.

Losing him right now as the Maple Leafs attempt to track down the Boston Bruins in the standings isn’t a perfect scenario, but the team does have other options to take over Kapanen’s minutes. William Nylander has been promoted to the wing of Auston Matthews while young forward Trevor Moore will likely see regular time on the fourth line. There is currently no timetable for Kapanen’s return, but his penchant for scoring timely goals will certainly be needed if the Maple Leafs are expecting to do any damage in the playoffs this year.

Calgary Flames To Carry Ten Defensemen

There is a logjam on the blue line in Calgary, but the team is content to keep it that way. Sportsnet’s Eric Francis recently spoke to Flames GM Brad Treliving who stated that the team won’t be changing it’s current configuration on defense. With the recent recall of veteran Michael Stone from a conditioning stint in the AHL, Calgary currently has nine defenseman on the NHL roster. Treliving doubled down on his commitment to competition on the back end by adding that Juuso Valimaki, currently logging major minutes in the minors, will soon be recalled as well. At that point, the Flames will have ten defensemen and plan to carry that group through the remainder of the season.

With ten defensemen seeking play time, one would think multiple jobs are up for grabs. In fact, Francis writes that only one spot is really available if the Flames are at full health. The grouping of Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie, Travis Hamonic, and Noah Hanifin are all cemented in their top-four roles and the team has no complaints with young Rasmus Andersson on the bottom pair. That leaves five rearguards to battle for the one left-side spot beside Andersson on a nightly basis, while the other four watch from the press box.

The favorite to see the most ice time the rest of the way is trade deadline addition Oscar Fantenberg. Francis notes that head coach Bill Peters prefers to have a balanced blue line between righties and lefties (even though Brodie is a natural left-handed shot who plays to Giordano’s right) and Fanteberg has fit in nicely in his natural position next to Andersson. The former L.A. King was considered more of a depth addition when he was acquired, but has settled into a starting role in the recent weeks. Of course, Stone will also get plenty of consideration as the top veteran option next to the inexperienced Andersson. However, he has also been sidelined since November and may take some time to get back up to speed. Stone is also a right-shot, which isn’t preferred. Oliver Kylington is a left-shot and has played more games for the Flames this season than any of his competitors. At the same time, the 21-year-old has averaged the least ice time per game of the group and may not have the full trust of the coaching staff just yet. Kylington has shown flashes, but is still susceptible to defensive mistakes. The same can be said for Valimaki, who is just 20, but the recent first-rounder has looked strong in recent weeks with the Stockton Heat and logged 22 games with Calgary earlier this season. Finally, there’s stay-at-home defenseman Dalton Prout, who has been used primarily as an extra man over the past few years, but can be a dependable presence in his own zone and a physical threat, albeit with limited offensive ability.

Treliving tells Franics that he feels the numbers on the blue line are not a detriment to the team, but an opportunity for competition to make everyone better. Without a clear No. 6, the Flames will certainly have some competition down the stretch and it may very well result in a motivated winner. However, there is some risk that too much shuffling will leave Calgary without an obvious pick to man the bottom pair in the postseason. With little room for error in the playoffs, a cold defenseman or a choice without the requisite chemistry with Andersson could prove to be a problem. Depth for the purpose of safeguarding injuries is always an asset, but the Flames would be best-served to find a winner of this battle sooner rather than later and turn ten defensemen into six starters and four backups well prior to the postseason.

Detroit Red Wings Sign NCAA Top Scorer Taro Hirose

The Detroit Red Wings have added a local product, who also happened to be the highest scoring player in the NCAA this season. The team has announced a two-year entry-level contract with Michigan State standout Taro Hirose. The talented winger led the college ranks in assists, points, and multi-point games this season and now he joins Princeton’s Ryan Kuffner, also signed today, as two top collegiate talents heading to Detroit.

Hirose, 22, is a Calgary native who first started garnering attention as a top scorer in the BCHL back in 2015-16. Many considered it a surprise that Hirose was never drafted, though others have pointed to a lack of size and strength as deterring NHL teams from taking the risk. Hirose has defied the skepticism, taking his talents to Michigan State and excelling, despite a lack of equal ability around him. Hirose has led the Spartans in scoring in each of the past two years, this season taking his game to the next level with an NCAA-best 50 points in 36 games.

Hirose is a strong skater with both straight ahead speed and great quickness and also makes decisions at a fast pace. A high-end play-maker with good vision, Hirose was undoubtedly one of the most creative offensive players at the college level this season. However, the 5’10”, 161-lb. winger is undersized and wouldn’t be the first game-breaking talent out of the NCAA to struggle with the adjustment to the bigger, stronger NHL. He’ll need to continue working and exceeding expectations if he is to keep up his scoring prowess in the pros.

Despite Hirose’s best efforts, Michigan State was bounced early from the Big Ten Conference tournament and he immediately became one of the top targets on the college free agent market. Clearly, there was a draw to staying in-state with Detroit, but there may have been another incentive. It’s unclear as of yet whether Hirose will report to the Red Wings right away and burn the first year of his contract or if he will instead play out the year with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, but the former is more likely. Hirose is capable of contributing right away to a Detroit team with little left to play for this season and both sides could benefit from an early look at how he fits at the highest level. Even if his debut is held off until next season, Hirose will enter camp as an intriguing candidate for a top-nine role with the Red Wings next year.
