Central Notes: Sharp, Jets’ Drafting and Development

There was much fanfare when Patrick Sharp returned to Chicago on a one-year deal in July. Many warned that this wasn’t the Sharp that Chicago fans were accustomed to seeing score goals and show up often on the scoresheet. Others pointed to the fact that Sharp felt better and would mesh well with his old teammates. Though the Hawks have won five in a row, Sharp may find himself watching their chance at a sixth straight win from the press box. Chicago Tribune writer Chris Hine reports that a frustrated Sharp was rotated out of practice lines on Monday. From Hine:

Sharp was not in the line rushes as Richard Panik, who is going through struggles of his own, replaced him on the third line with Vinnie Hinostroza and Ryan Hartman.

“What do you want me to say?” Sharp said. “I could play faster. I could play with more pace. I could use my speed more. I find myself standing around a little bit too much.”

Quenneville could change his mind before Thursday’s game against the Stars, and maybe Monday’s move served as enough of a jolt for Sharp.

Perhaps it’s a wake-up call or  a new reality for the veterean. In 33 games, Sharp has 9 points (3-6).

  • The Winnipeg Jets can thank great drafting and developing for a successful season so far that could net the team an 100-point season. CBC’s Josh Clipperton writes that general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff knows that a patient ownership team allowed him the time to ensure his team would develop appropriately. Though there were many who grew impatient and wanted the veteran manager to pay with his job, the Jets are on pace to have their best season in franchise history. Patience, then, is truly a virtue for a franchise that has only been to the playoffs once since relocating from Atlanta and rebooting the latest incarnation of the Winnipeg Jets. With a young talented core, it appears that the Jets patience not only paid off, but will provide more for their fans in the years to come.

Joe Veleno Officially Traded To Drummondville

Though the deal was agreed to much earlier this month, the Saint John Sea Dogs have officially traded top 2018 draft prospect Joe Veleno to the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the QMJHL. The Sea Dogs will receive three first-round picks and two second-round picks in return for the exceptionally talented 17-year old, who will get an opportunity to play with a better team for the second-half of his draft year.

Joe VelenoVeleno was the first player to be given exceptional status and enter the QMJHL at the age of 15, showing why as a rookie with 43 points in 62 games. Unfortunately, his game took a step back as he dealt with injuries in his sophomore year, leading some to question the league’s decision to allow him in so young. This year, Veleno has 31 points in 31 games for Saint John, but hasn’t been able to help the team to a better record than 10-19-4, second worst in the entire league.

Drummondville will hope to get Veleno for more than just the rest of this year, as there is the potential of him jumping right to the NHL next season. The 6’2″, 194-lbs center is projected to go somewhere in the top-15 picks in June’s NHL Entry Draft, though could go as high as the top-5 should his season take off. He’ll turn just 18 in January, but has played with those older than him his entire life.

Veleno is an excellent playmaker, and smooth in everything he does on the ice. The ease in which certain parts of the game come to him can sometimes be perceived as a lack of work ethic, but coaches and scouts say the very opposite about him. Whether he does crack the top-5 on draft day is still to be seen, but his future as a professional is very bright. For now, he’ll set his sights on the QMJHL Championship with Drummondville and an appearance in Regina at the 2018 Memorial Cup.

Snapshots: Penguins, Boeser, Maple Leafs

The Pittsburgh Penguins made two trades today ahead of the holiday roster freeze, but might not be done this season. Josh Yohe of The Athletic spoke with Penguins’ GM Jim Rutherford earlier, who told him that the presence of Jamie Oleksiak—a player Pittsburgh has been looking at for two years—could mean more trades down the line due to added depth on defense.

That’s the same idea that Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had when he suggested Oleksiak could potentially be “insurance against a future Ian Cole trade.” Cole has been rumored to be available since ending up a healthy scratch earlier this season, and has reportedly clashed with head coach Mike Sullivan multiple times. You’d expect Oleksiak would need to prove his worth for a while before they sent any defenseman out of town.

Dallas Stars Trade Jamie Oleksiak To Pittsburgh Penguins

After clearing some room on the roster by dealing Josh Archibald, the Pittsburgh Penguins have now acquired Jamie Oleksiak from the Dallas Stars in exchange for a conditional 2019 fourth-round pick. Pittsburgh had just acquired Minnesota’s fourth-round pick from the Arizona Coyotes in the previous deal. Dallas will get whichever pick, Minnesota or Pittsburgh’s own, is earlier in the fourth round.

"<strongOleksiak, 24, was a first-round pick by the Stars in 2011 but hasn’t quite had the impact expected at the time. The 6’7″ defender has had trouble staying in the lineup for Dallas, even playing forward at times just to get back in game action. At times he can look like the dominating defensive presence the Stars had hoped for, but those moments have been too few and far between for them to give him added responsibility.

In Pittsburgh, Oleksiak will get another chance to impress and prove that he’s an NHL defenseman before hitting restricted free agency again this summer. Currently on a one-year deal worth $965K, he’ll actually cost the Penguins a little more than Archibald on the year. Interestingly, Oleksiak is another left-handed defenseman for the Penguins, something they’re already full of. With Justin Schultz on injured reserve, only Kris Letang and Chad Ruhwedel hold right-handed sticks at the moment, making it unclear where Oleksiak will fit in. Kevin Czuczman has been sent to the minor leagues for the time being.

Still, it is clear that Penguins GM Jim Rutherford has decided at least a minor shakeup is needed for his club. Pittsburgh has been a disappointment this season after back-to-back Stanley Cups, and find themselves out of a playoff spot at the moment. Oleksiak isn’t the answer to all of their problems, so expect other moves to eventually come down the pipe for the Penguins, though they may have to wait until after the holiday roster freeze.

Edmonton Oilers Trade Greg Chase To Florida Panthers

In another pre-freeze move, the Edmonton Oilers have traded minor league forward Greg Chase to the Florida Panthers for future considerations. The move opens up a potential roster spot for the Oilers, who were at 49/50 contracts when the day began. The potential departure of Nathan Walker, who is on waivers, could open another slot. The Oilers also loaned Mark Fayne to the Springfield Thunderbirds (Florida’s AHL affiliate), though he—and his salary—will stay on Edmonton’s books.

Chase was selected by the Oilers in the seventh round of the 2013 entry draft, but has never quite found the scoring touch he had in the WHL as a junior player. Bouncing up and down between the ECHL and AHL without much success, he’ll get the chance for a fresh start in the Florida organization. The 22-year old still has plenty of time to improve and become a valued member of the Springfield organization, though the NHL seems a distant goal at this point.

More importantly, the Oilers now have room to make additional moves if they so choose. As we discussed recently regarding the Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs, the absence of contract slots can very much hamper your ability to improve the team if an opportunity arises. The Oilers could end the day at 48 contracts, giving them the option to claim someone off waivers or deal away draft picks for extra bodies to help them on their current playoff run.

Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire Michael Leighton From Arizona Coyotes

The Pittsburgh Penguins made a deal ahead of the trade freeze, acquiring Michael Leighton and a 2019 fourth-round pick (originally Minnesota’s) from the Arizona Coyotes. They’ll send back Josh Archibald, Sean Maguire and a 2019 sixth-round pick. Leighton will join his third organization of the season, after already being dealt from Tampa Bay to Arizona earlier this year.

While Leighton has a long history in professional hockey, he hasn’t played well during his tumultuous season so far and is an interesting move for a club that had reportedly been after goaltending depth. The fact that Maguire—younger and performing better in his split ECHL/AHL season—is going the other way means it’s not a clear upgrade in terms of raw talent in net.

Archibald, who may be the only player in the deal to spend any more time in the NHL this season, is a 25-year old undersized forward without a ton of upside. Though he was an excellent college player, Archibald hasn’t been able to find much success at the professional level.

For Pittsburgh, the upside to this deal isn’t readily apparent. While they do drop a contract of their roster limit, they already had quite a few spots free. Moving up a couple of rounds in the draft and gaining some minor league experience in net is at least worth something, but Archibald is a useful extra player and Maguire clearly has more upside than Leighton at this point in their respective careers.

We’ll have to wait and see what Pittsburgh has in store, which could potentially include another goaltender move or something that needed Archibald’s active roster spot. The young forward isn’t waiver-exempt any longer, meaning Pittsburgh could have lost him if they tried to send him to the minor leagues.

Edmonton Oilers Place Nathan Walker On Waivers

The Edmonton Oilers have made a move just before the roster freeze, placing forward Nathan Walker on waivers. In a corresponding move, the team has recalled Anton Slepyshev from the minor leagues and placed Oscar Klefbom on injured reserve. Walker was only claimed by the Oilers earlier this month, and will now be available once again to the rest of the league. If reclaimed by the Washington Capitals without any other team putting in a claim, Walker could be sent to the minor leagues immediately.

Walker, the first Australian to be drafted and play in the NHL, made his debut earlier this season when he suited up for the Capitals. Despite scoring in that first game, he played just six more games with the Capitals before hitting the waiver wire and moving up to Edmonton. In two games for the Oilers he’s been held scoreless, but still has some interesting upside for a team looking to add speed to their bottom-six.

Though technically the roster freeze will come into effect before Walker is through the waiver process, he can still be claimed by any team and report to them immediately. That could potentially give a team an extra player for the next week should they have the roster room, only to see him hit the wire once again after rosters are thawed out after Christmas.

Morning Notes: Roster Freeze, Team USA, 100 Years

The NHL’s roster freeze comes into effect tonight, and CapFriendly is here to explain the finer details of the process. On Twitter, they released an easy to understand list of things teams can and cannot do. Basically, it comes down to teams unable to make any roster moves for the next week, but there are some exceptions.

Teams are actually able to send players back to the minor leagues if they were recalled after December 11th, or should a player come off long-term injured reserve and require a roster spot. Because of that, you may still see a bit of movement over the next few days, at least in terms of minor moves.

  • The USA World Junior team has made one cut, releasing Cole Hults from the selection camp today. Hults, a Los Angeles Kings prospect and defenseman at Pennsylvania State University, is one of three expected cuts on defense for the club. As Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports, the team is expected to make further cuts on Wednesday.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs will celebrate 100 years of NHL hockey when they take on the Carolina Hurricanes this afternoon. On December 19th, 1917, the Montreal Wanderers beat the Toronto Arenas 10-9, while the Montreal Canadiens won over the Ottawa Senators 7-4. The Canadiens will also be in action, but are on the road in Vancouver for the historic date.

Minor Transactions: 12/19/17

The NHL will activate a roster freeze tonight at 11:59pm eastern, effectively shutting down the trade market for a little over a week. While today may bring some movement in terms of trade, more likely small changes will be made to rosters to ensure the team is ready for the next few games. Players can be called up during the freeze, but not waived or loaned.

  • Last night, the Vegas Golden Knights recalled Tomas Hyka from the minor leagues and placed Luca Sbisa back on injured reserve. Hyka, 24, was signed this summer by the Golden Knights as one of the very first players in franchise history. This will be the first time he’s up in the NHL, after showing an offensive capability at the minor league level. With 12 points in 16 games for the Chicago Wolves, Hyka is off to a great start in North American professional hockey.
  • With Sonny Milano returning for the Columbus Blue Jackets last night, the team has sent Tyler Motte back to the minor leagues. The 22-year old Motte had four points in 19 games with the Blue Jackets, but will have to wait for his next opportunity.
  • After acquiring Josh Archibald from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Arizona Coyotes have sent Dylan Strome back to the minor leagues. The 20-year old Strome has just one point in 11 games with the Coyotes this season, but has dominated the AHL level with 26 in 15 games.
  • The San Jose Sharks have assigned Danny O’Regan and Marcus Sorensen to the AHL, while recalling Joakim Ryan. Remember, that the team can still recall players during the freeze.

Poll: Which Coach Leads The Jack Adams Race?

The season is far from over, but if it ended today, who would have a chance at the league’s prize for being the top coach? Through the middle of December, some candidates have emerged, though if things stay as they are, it could be a landslide for one coach in particular.

Paul Maurice found his name on almost every hot seat list out there before the season began but the fast-skating Jets jumped out to a dizzying start that now has them as one of the top teams in the West. Though they’ve cooled a bit, Maurice has certainly quieted the doubters.

Jon Cooper was another coach being questioned as the Tampa Bay Lightning failed to make the playoffs last season, but any semblance of doubt was squashed as the Bolts rose quickly to the top of the Eastern Conference. Sporting the best record in hockey, Cooper has certainly staked his claim as one of the league’s best coaches.

Mike Yeo was a wise choice to bring into St. Louis, as the Blues sit tied for the top spot in the West with division rival Nashville.

But it seems that barring any major collapse, the Adams is earmarked for Gerard Gallant. Unceremoniously and oddly dumped by Florida last season, Gallant has taken an expansion team within just two points of the top spot in the West. Though the league structure is different than previous expansion teams entry into the league, Gallant’s wizardry has been nothing short of amazing as Vegas has stockpiled young talent while also putting an exciting–and fiercely competitive team–on the ice.
