Edmonton Oilers Will Match Any Offer Sheet For Leon Draisaitl

June 22, 2017 at 3:32 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

Though it may not have needed to be said, Edmonton Oilers GM today clarified his position in regards to a potential offer sheet targeting Leon Draisaitl. As Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports, Chiarelli and the Oilers will match “any offer.” Whether it is a bluff or not, it’s hard to see anyone actually signing Draisaitl to an offer sheet. They are so rare these days that they almost never happen, and Chiarelli can honestly say he’ll match after moving out salary in today’s earlier Jordan Eberle deal.

If anyone were to try it, the penalties were outlined by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet some time ago. They’re as follows:

$1,295,571 or less No compensation
$1,295,571 to $1,962,968 Third-round pick
$1,962,968 to $3,925,975 Second-round pick
$3,925,975 to $5,888,960 First and third-round picks
$5,888,960 to $7,851,948 First, second and third-round picks
$7,851,948 to $9,814,935 Two firsts, a second and third-round picks
Over $9,814,935 Four first-round picks

You can see why Chiarelli would be comfortable saying it. Unless a team is willing to sign Draisaitl for almost $10MM a year—which is still unlikely regardless of his unbelievable potential and performance this season—the compensation would be nowhere near the value he’ll bring to the franchise for the next several years. There’s no guarantee that Draisaitl stays with the Oilers long term (or even to his 26th birthday given how young he broke into the league) but two firsts a second and third pale in comparison to what he’s worth.

Interestingly, Oilers fans will remember the time they signed Thomas Vanek, then a young sniper for the Buffalo Sabres to an offer sheet, only to have it matched. Had the Sabres let Vanek go, they would have been owed four first-round picks, which ended up as the 12th, 10th, 1st and 1st overall selections in their respective drafts. Vanek was coming off a better season (albeit in a higher scoring environment) than Draisaitl’s 2016-17, giving just a tiny bit of pause to the idea that the Oilers should actually match any offer.

Vancouver Considering Incentive-Laden Deal For Ryan Miller

June 22, 2017 at 3:18 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning has been clear from the end of the season that keeping Ryan Miller around for another season is something he’d like to do. Now, in speaking with Ben Kuzma of The Province, he mentions a possible one-year incentive-laden contract to keep the soon-to-be 37-year old in town.

Miller put together a pretty solid season in many respects, recording a .914 save percentage just a tick below his career average. Even as he heads into his late thirties, he’s still an effective goaltender in the league and would likely benefit even further from an improved defense should he land in a more competitive market. Instead, he may have to settle for the incentives and a one-year deal in Vancouver where he’ll help shepherd in the next wave of Canucks success.

Performance bonuses can only be given to players in certain situations, and in Miller’s case it would have to be a one-year contract. It’s unlikely he’d get much more than that on the open market, though it’s definitely something his camp will have to consider. If someone wanted to give him a two-year deal worth the same as the total possible (salary+bonuses) offered by the Canucks, he’d have to wonder whether it was the safer bet.

The Canucks will use Jacob Markstrom more next season, but many general managers including Benning have been clear that strong goaltending is a big part of developing young players. It’s the reason John Chayka wouldn’t trade Mike Smith at the deadline (though he has now) and why Benning wants Miller back at all.

Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Chad Ruhwedel For Two Years

June 22, 2017 at 3:17 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Pittsburgh Penguins have locked up unrestricted free agent defenseman Chad Ruhwedel for two more seasons. His new deal will pay him a league-minimum $650K each season.

Ruhwedel, 27, came to the Penguins on a two-way deal last summer and ended up playing 34 regular season games and six more playoff matches. His effectiveness as a depth defenseman is clear on a team who rode a group of lesser-known names all the way to the Stanley Cup. In fact, he contributed 10 points in those 34 games, a 24-point rate which would have put him just behind Ian Cole’s production. Not bad for a minimum-salary defenseman.

Like any contending team, the Penguins have to manage their cap space wisely this summer or they could get into trouble quickly. Though they have close to $20MM in space currently, there are new deals needed for Conor Sheary Brian Dumoulin and Justin Schultz, while at least one more defender is likely on their shopping list. Bringing back Ruhwedel for such a reasonable price is a nice first step for their offseason.

Brian Flynn, Dwight King Will Not Return To Montreal

June 22, 2017 at 2:18 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

According to Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin, both Brian Flynn and Dwight King will not be re-signed to return to the team next year. The pair are unrestricted free agents on July 1st, and join Nikita Nesterov as players already told they will not be returning.

Flynn has spent the couple of years with the Canadiens after being acquired from the Buffalo Sabres at the 2015 deadline. Though he has been an effective checker, he’s never quite lived up to the hype he had when signed out of the University of Maine. At the time, he was a pretty sought-after forward prospect that many thought would be able to contribute offensively at the NHL level. Instead, he’s only been able to put up 61 points in 275 games.

King is another deadline acquisition, this time from the Los Angeles Kings just a few months ago. The hulking forward was brought in to add some toughness to the lineup and actually has a history as a pretty effective secondary scoring threat. In 2013-14, King put up 15 goals and 30 points.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see both land somewhere in fourth-line roles, especially King who is hitting the open market at 27 and has the size many coaches and GM love to add to their bottom-six forwards.

Trade Block Notes: Demers, Duchene, Methot

June 22, 2017 at 1:58 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After leaving him unprotected in the expansion draft, Jason Demers is apparently available in trade from the Florida Panthers. That from Pierre LeBrun of TSN, who notes it would have to be for the “right price.” Demers was given a five-year, $22.5MM deal last summer but, like Reilly Smith who was already moved out, it didn’t come from new-old GM Dale Tallon.

The newly turned 29-year old Demers put up 28 points this season, another solid showing offensively from a defenseman who has turned into one of the more consistent point producers around the league. While he’s never going to compete with the likes of Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson, Demers is a solid right-handed defenseman capable of 25-30 points every year, something that is in high demand around the league.

  • Darren Dreger of TSN reports that the Nashville Predators have shown interest in Matt Duchene, something that goes back to before the Seth Jones–Ryan Johansen deal according to Mike Chambers of the Denver Post. While Duchene would be a huge add for the Predators, they would be remiss to move any of their top-4 defensemen for him and past that it’s hard to see a fit between the two clubs. Perhaps Dante Fabbro, the Predators first-round pick from last summer could be involved, but it would take more than that to outbid the rest of the league on Duchene.
  • Marc Methot continues to be the root of speculation surrounding the Dallas Stars, but as Bob McKenzie of TSN points out he would rather stay in Vegas than alter his current no-trade clause to facilitate a trade from his new club. Methot was selected in the expansion draft, and is expected to be flipped right away for assets. It’s unclear whether the Stars are on his current NTC, which allows him to block deals to ten different clubs.

New Jersey Devils Inquire About Alex Galchenyuk

June 22, 2017 at 1:12 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

In an interesting turn, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports that the New Jersey Devils have made inquiries with the Montreal Canadiens on restricted free agent Alex Galchenyuk. While it’s clear that Galchenyuk is being discussed with several teams, this is the first we’ve heard of a New Jersey connection.

As LeBrun notes, there may not be a fit between the two sides. Montreal is in need of defensemen even after acquiring David Schlemko earlier today, and New Jersey could use some of those themselves. They’ve had trouble scoring even with Taylor Hall added to the picture, and Galchenyuk would certainly do that, but it’s not clear what a possible return could be.

The 23-year old Galchenyuk is an odd case in Montreal. Even though he’s just a year removed from a 30-goal season, and put up 44 points in 61 games this year he’s the subject of much trade speculation due to his lack of defensive responsibility when playing the center position. The team went out and added Jonathan Drouin, a similarly skilled player (if not exactly stylistically identical) and immediately inked him to a long-term deal. Galchenyuk on the other hand still sits without a deal for next year, and no clear role on the roster.

Previously Minnesota had been rumored to be an expected landing spot, and while New Jersey making an inquiry doesn’t necessarily mean anything to dispute their claim, Minnesota will have more bidders than just the Devils to fight off. The third-overall pick from 2012 has incredible scoring ability, even if he is a winger long-term.

New Jersey could really use him, as though they have some depth coming up the middle—Michael McLeod, Pavel Zacha and likely one of Nolan Patrick or Nico Hischier to name a few—they aren’t as deep on the wings and could use another top-flight offensive player to plug in with Hall, even if they likely wouldn’t play together. Other than Damon Severson though, who is as close to untouchable as anyone on the New Jersey roster, there isn’t much defensive help that Montreal could be after.

Kris Russell Expected To Re-Sign In Edmonton

June 22, 2017 at 12:53 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

After the Edmonton Oilers cleared some cap space earlier today by moving Jordan Eberle for Ryan Strome, the team is close to bringing back one of their pending free agents. E.J. Hradek of NHL Network is hearing that Kris Russell will re-sign with the team.

Russell was one of the more interesting cases in free agency last summer, expected to lock down a long-term deal but eventually having to settle for just a one-year pact. Edmonton ended up giving him $3.1MM for last season, something that he’s sure to improve upon this time around. The 30-year old played over 21 minutes a night for the Oilers, registering 13 points in 68 games while blocking his regular 200+ shots.

One of the battlegrounds between “old” and “new school” player evaluation, Russell seems to be an effective defender but records extremely poor possession statistics. Despite that, coaches seem to rely heavily on him in many different situations and have put him on the ice more than 21 minutes a night for four straight seasons. Especially with the loss of Andrej Sekera to injury for the first part of the season, the Oilers needed to bring in a left-handed shot at some point this summer.

Whether Russell should be that defenseman is up for debate, as Edmonton fans are just as split as anyone when it comes to his performance. Though he once put up 34 points in a season for Calgary, he’s far from an offensive contributor and shouldn’t be expected to get back to that total going forward. The reason for moving Eberle, cap space, is also at risk should the Oilers decide to lock him up long-term. With Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid needing new contracts, locking in close to $4MM per season for a past-30 Russell is a risky proposition.

Montreal Canadiens Acquire David Schlemko From Vegas

June 22, 2017 at 12:13 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Another pick-and-flip from the Vegas Golden Knights as the Montreal Canadiens have traded for David Schlemko. The Golden Knights will receive a 2019 fifth-round pick in return. Schlemko was the expansion selection from the San Jose Sharks last night. David Schlemko

It was clear that the Montreal Canadiens needed to add defense after trading away Mikhail Sergachev and Nathan Beaulieu while losing Alexei Emelin in the expansion draft. They’ve found that depth in the former Sharks defender, and it comes at a very low price. The 30-year old defender will join his seventh career team, previously suiting up for the Coyotes, Stars, Flames and Devils in addition to the Golden Knights and Sharks.

Impressively, Schlemko turned a one-year $625K contract in 2015-16 with the Devils into a four-year $8.4MM deal which still has three years left on it. That $2.1MM cap hit is reasonable for a player who can contribute at both ends of the rink, and actually has sneaky-good possession numbers. His shot suppression ability is excellent, and he’s put up nearly 20 points in each of the last two seasons.

In fact, Schlemko likely adds more than Emelin ever did even if they play very different styles and it will come for just over half the salary next season. George McPhee seems to have done the Canadiens a favor, clearing cap space and providing a better defender. Even so, Montreal still has quite a bit of work to do as this can’t be the only acquisition they make on the back end.

It is interesting that this is all the Golden Knights received for their San Jose selection, even though there doesn’t seem to have been any side-deal with the team. Brenden Dillon, Dylan DeMelo and Paul Martin were all left unprotected, and each of them seems to have more value than a 2019 fifth-round pick. Perhaps there is something else going on behind the scenes, but it does seem like a rather poor return for a serviceable defenseman.

Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Frederik Tiffels To ELC

June 22, 2017 at 11:28 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Pittsburgh Penguins have inked a prospect of their own, signing Frederik Tiffels to a two-year entry-level contract. Tiffels will forego his final year at Western Michigan to turn pro and join the Penguins’ organization.

A sixth-round pick in 2015, Tiffels put up three solid years in the NCAA and has a chance to outperform his draft status. Scoring 21 points in 37 games this season, he apparently did enough to deserve an NHL deal from the Penguins, who have had a lot of success with NCAA players in recent history. Bill Guerin, the new GM of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins has been a big part of the recruitment process for college players, and will now get to use Tiffels along with Zach-Aston Reese—if he doesn’t make the NHL club out of camp that is—next year.

Tiffels joins Daniel Sprong and Dominik Simon from the 2015 Penguins draft class, one that looks like it was effective even without a first-round pick.
