Predators Notes: Sissons, Burakovsky, Fabbro

The Nashville Predators have taken another hit up front, announcing today that forward Colton Sissons has been placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. While it’s unclear when Sissons suffered the injury, he was not in  the lineup when the Predators faced the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night. The team did not give any timeline for Sissons’ return, but any extended absence will hurt Nashville, who are also still without Filip Forsberg and Viktor Arvidsson. Sissons has been a key contributor while those two have been sidelined, recording seven goals and nine assists in 35 games, tied for eighth on the team in scoring. Sissons also has a tremendous +17 rating and is an invaluable defensive presence among the forward corps. For the Predators’ sake, hopefully Sissons will return after the minimum ten days on the IR.

  • With yet another starting forward out of commission, Predators GM David Poile may feel even more pressure to land some help via trade. Nashville was already expected to pursue scoring help before the trade deadline to help out their middling offense and was one of the teams speculated to have interest in Washington Capitals forward Andre Burakovsky, who hit the trade block last week. The Capitals are reportedly looking to make a deal that would bring back a player that can help them immediately this season, of which the Predators have options. Pressed into regular action due to the rash of injuries, Miikka Salomaki and Frederick Gaudreau have both played well at times this season and could be of interest to Washington. The team could even be willing to dangle Calle Jarnkrok if they’re high on Burakovsky. The two teams would seemingly be a good fit for a deal, although there still could be lingering feelings from the last time the Capitals traded a young winger to the Predators (see Forsberg-for-Martin Erat).
  • Speaking of reinforcements, Predators fans should be excited to see defensive prospect Dante Fabbro listed on the Team Canada roster for the upcoming Spengler Cup. The team’s first-round pick in 2016, Fabbro has been a productive member of the Boston University blue line for three seasons now and has even evolved into the Terriers’ captain. However, playing alongside pros at the Spengler Cup is the next step for Fabbro and could give the young defenseman the experience needed to step in to the Predators’ lineup later this season. Although Fabbro has another season of NCAA eligibility remaining, he is heavily expected to leave school when BU’s season is over. A strong showing in Switzerland could convince Poile and company that Fabbro is worth signing and playing immediately this year. The young puck-mover could be a nice depth addition for a Nashville team that is looking to make it back to the Stanley Cup Final this year.

Sergei Shumakov Signs With KHL’s Avangard Omsk

Sergei Shumakov was applauded for sticking with North American hockey when his contract with the Washington Capitals was terminated earlier this month. It turns out he wasn’t that committed to staying on the continent. Just eleven days after signing with the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds, Shumakov has jumped ship in favor of a return to the KHL. Avangard Omsk have announced that they have signed Shumakov to a three-year contract.

Shumakov, 26, made headlines when he signed with the Capitals this off-season. The talented forward had been playing for Sibir Novosibirsk of the KHL since he was a teenager, before moving to CSKA Moscow last year. Shumakov helped CSKA to a finals appearance behind a 40-point effort and +28 rating in 47 regular season games and another four points in eleven postseason games. Many felt that would be a good fit in Washington, a team that has had great success with Russian players. However, Shumakov was unable to earn a spot on the Capitals roster in training camp and was relegated to beginning his North American career with the AHL’s Hershey Bears. Shumakov recorded four points in ten games with the Bears before requesting his release from Washington. Shumakov then joined the Thunderbirds, perhaps hoping he might earn another shot at the NHL with their parent club, the Florida Panthers, or another team, and added one point in three games.

However, when Avangard came calling with a lucrative, long-term contract, Shumakov likely couldn’t resist a return to the league that he so recently excelled in. Omsk is currently a top five team in the KHL and leading the Chernyshev Division. They add Shumakov to a roster that already boasts a number of NHL alumni, including veteran defensemen Cody Franson, Alexei Emelin, and Evgeny Medvedev and experienced scorers Sergei Shirokov, David Desharnais, Maxime Talbot, and Viktor Stalberg. Shumakov should fit right in with this group and make Omsk and even more dangerous team this season and beyond in the KHL.

Snapshots: Melnyk, Burakovsky, AHL

The Ottawa Senators’ Lebreton Flats arena bid was dealt an expected death blow when owner Eugene Melnyk filed a $700MM lawsuit against his former partner John Ruddy, who was part of the group trying to acquire the development rights to the area. Now Ruddy has filed his own counterclaim, seeking more than $1 billion according to the Canadian Press. In the counterclaim Trinity Development, Ruddy’s company, alleges:

CSMI’s and Melnyk’s true aim is to have the City of Ottawa or Trinity fund and build the $500 million event centre for the Ottawa Senators hockey team, with the Senators getting 30 years’ free rent. CSMI also wants the valuable naming rights and an unreasonable degree of control over the Lebreton project.

Meanwhile, Melnyk’s group has issued a statement offering to amend the original plan and have Trinity fund the project but also take all of the expected profits. Though not technically dead, it does seem like a difficult path forward for the Senators to try and get a new arena near the downtown core. Lebreton was arguably their best chance for now, meaning they’ll be stuck dealing with the arena in Kanata going forward. That rink is far from the city center and difficult for many fans to get to, especially for weekday games.

  • While Andre Burakovsky’s name has surfaced in trade rumors recently, Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post is quick to point out that the Washington Capitals are not necessarily shopping the young forward around at this time. Though they would certainly listen to offers, the hope is that Burakovsky can turn things around on his own and be the productive middle-six forward that they have hoped he would be for some time. The 23-year old has just eight points this season and has never fulfilled the promise he showed as a young forward in Sweden or the OHL. Burakovsky is also a restricted free agent at the end of the season with arbitration rights, which could certainly give any acquiring team pause given his salary is already at $3MM this year.
  • The AHL announced multiple suspensions today, handing out a two-game ban to Matt Puempel and a three-game ban to Stephen Gionta. The two forwards, playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins and Bridgeport Sound Tigers respectively, will have to sit out a few contests over the holiday season following their supplementary discipline.

Andre Burakovsky Has Come Up In Trade Talks

Capitals winger Andre Burakovsky has had a rough start to his season and was a healthy scratch for a second straight game tonight against Carolina.  Accordingly, his name has started to come up in trade discussions, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman noted in an appearance on Sportsnet 960 (audio link).

The 23-year-old has been in trade speculation dating back to last season but he has shown spurts of becoming a top-six player in the past so Washington opted to hold onto him.  However, those spurts haven’t been evident too often this season as he has just eight points in 29 games while spending most of the year in their bottom six.  That’s not particularly good value for a $3MM cap charge on a team that is once again very tight to the salary cap.

It’s that cap hit that may ultimately make a sell-low move a realistic possibility.  Burakovsky is set to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights this summer but with a $3.25MM qualifying offer required (his salary for this season), he looks like a prime non-tender candidate as things currently stand.  An acquiring team may want to get a look at him to see if a change of scenery is enough to get him going while allowing the Capitals to get some sort of asset back (and perhaps some short-term cap flexibility) over losing him for nothing in June if they are leaning towards not tendering the offer.

It wasn’t that long ago that Burakovsky was viewed as part of Washington’s long-term plans.  That doesn’t appear to be the case any longer and even though their potential return in a trade is a lot less than it was just a year or two ago, it still may be the time for the Capitals to move on.

Minor Transactions: 12/15/18

As always, Saturday features a busy slate on the NHL schedule with 20 teams in action.  As a result, there is bound to be plenty of roster movement throughout the day.  We’ll keep track of those moves here.

  • The Panthers announced a series of roster moves, recalling center Henrik Borgstrom and forward Jayce Hawryluk from Springfield of the AHL while returning wingers Dryden Hunt and Anthony Greco to the Thunderbirds. Borgstrom is one of Florida’s top prospects and is off to a good start in his first full professional season with 19 points in 21 games.  He did get into four games late last year so this won’t be his first NHL action.  That isn’t the case for Hawryluk, who is up for the first time following a great start to his season that sees him tied for the AHL lead in assists with 21.  Hunt has split the season between nearly equally between the NHL (13 games) and the AHL (15 games) but has been much more productive in the minors while Greco made his NHL debut earlier this week.
  • Defenseman Tyler Lewington is getting his first NHL shot as the Capitals have promoted him from AHL Hershey per a team release. The 24-year-old is in his fourth professional season and is among the AHL leaders in penalty minutes this season with 67.  He will likely serve as a reserve defender in the absence of Christian Djoos who underwent surgery on his thigh on Friday.
  • Veteran blueliner Kyle Cumiskey has inked a minor league deal with Boston for the rest of the season, reports Mark Divver of the Providence Journal (Twitter link). He had previously been with them on a PTO deal but did well enough to earn a guaranteed contract.  He’ll give the Bruins some extra depth in the minors and they have five remaining NHL contract slots if they ultimately need to bring him up to the big club.
  • The Sabres announced that they have recalled defenseman Matt Hunwick from his conditioning stint with AHL Rochester.  The veteran has yet to play this season for Buffalo due to a neck injury but played in two games with the Americans on the conditioning stint.  The team has an open roster spot so they won’t need to send someone down in order to activate the 33-year-old off of injured reserve. The team also announced they have activated defenseman Marco Scandella off of injured reserve and he is expected to play tonight. Scandella has missed the last eight games with a lower-body injury.
  • The Blues have assigned winger Zach Sanford to San Antonio of the AHL, per the AHL’s Transactions Page.  The 24-year-old has been relatively productive in a limited role in St. Louis with nine points in 24 games but the assignment will give him an opportunity to play considerably more than the 11:39 per night he’s averaging with the big club.

Christian Djoos Out Indefinitely Following Surgery

The Washington Capitals will be without young defenseman Christian Djoos for a while, after he underwent successful surgery on his left thigh. Djoos is out indefinitely as he recovers from the injury sustained against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.

Djoos, 24, became a full-time resident of the Capitals blue line last season after they watched Nate Schmidt leave through the expansion draft and Karl Alzner sign in Montreal. In 63 games the Swedish defenseman recorded 14 points before suiting up 22 times the postseason. Though he would see his minutes diminished during the Capitals Stanley Cup run, he returned this year and has been a staple among the team’s defense corps once again. The seventh-round pick has already made it further than most players drafted that late, and still has yet to really show off his offensive upside.

While he’s out, the Capitals will likely turn to Jonas Siegenthaler on the back end. The 21-year old has looked fine in his five appearances so far this year, and is expected to play a big part in future plans for Washington. Those plans may be coming a bit earlier than expected, but the opportunity is a well-earned one for the second-round pick.

T.J. Oshie Could Return Tuesday, Tom Wilson Could Resume Skating Later This Week

  • Capitals winger T.J. Oshie participated in practice today and could receive the green light to return from his concussion on Tuesday, reports J.J. Regan of NBC Sports Washington (Twitter link). He has missed the last 11 games but a decision on his availability likely won’t be decided until closer to game time tomorrow as the team wants to assess how he feels on Tuesday first.  His return would be a welcome one with the team currently without winger Tom Wilson (concussion); NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti notes (via Twitter) that the team hopes he can resume skating later this week.

Minor Transactions: 12/09/18

It was a series of exciting results in the NHL on Saturday, with seven of ten winners scoring five or more goals. Both in games and goals, today should be a bit quieter with just seven contests on the docket. Flyers-Jets is a matinee worth watching this afternoon, while the Canadiens and Blackhawks compete in an Original Six match-up and the Battle of Alberta takes place later tonight when the Flames visit the Oilers. Whether preparing for a game today or for the week ahead, keep up with all today’s minor moves right here:

  • With a divisional face-off with the Boston Bruins awaiting them later today, the Ottawa Senators have recalled veteran defenseman Erik Burgdoerfer, the team announced. The Belleville Senators’ captain has been a frequent call-up for Ottawa, but more often than not as extra security. Burgdoerfer has only played in one NHL game so far this season, despite spending more than a few games up with Ottawa. The 29-year-old has been a solid presence in the AHL, leading Belleville with a +8 rating, but has yet to earn much opportunity to display his defensive abilities for Ottawa. Perhaps that will change on this most recent promotion.
  • Despite missing his minor league game last night due to recurring injury concerns, Gabriel Vilardi has been recalled by the Los Angeles Kings, per the AHL. Vilardi has been on a conditioning assignment with the Ontario Reign for the past few weeks, but has only skated in four games with merely one point. The 11th overall pick a year ago, Vilardi is still expected to grow into a very good two-way forward, but must first shake his injury issues. This recall could simply be to allow the Kings’ medical team to take a closer look, but hopefully it is more of a reflection of his readiness to make his NHL debut sooner rather than later. The Los Angeles Kings also announced they have recalled forward Austin Wagner from the Ontario Reign of the AHL. Wagner, who was assigned to Ontario on Friday, will return, likely due to possible extended injury to Kyle Clifford, who went down Saturday after taking a hit from Vegas’ Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. The 21-year-old has played in 18 games for L.A. with a goal and four points.
  • The New York Islanders have returned Christopher Gibson to the AHL, now that goaltender Robin Lehner has returned to action. In a corresponding move, the team announced that young forward Josh Ho-Sang has been recalled from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Ho-Sang has been on a shorter leash under new head coach Barry Trotz and GM Lou Lamoriello and has yet to make his NHL debut this season. He has been very productive in the minors with 22 points in 26 games (albeit with only a pair of goals) which marks a greater scoring clip than his previous two seasons in Bridgeport. However, his scoring pace has not translated to the Islanders in the past and is unlikely to do so this time around. Another unsuccessful call-up for Ho-Sang could lead to the end of his time in New York, as quite a few teams would be interested in providing him a change of scenery.
  • Riley Barber is on his way back to Hershey, as the Washington Capitals announced that they have reassigned the young forward. Barber is second in scoring for the Bears with 18 points and hoped that he had earned a chance to suit up for the Capitals. Instead, Barber did not see any action on his recall and still has just three NHL games under his belt in four pro seasons, despite good production in the AHL.
  • The Calgary Flames announced they have recalled enforcer Anthony Peluso from the Stockton Heat of the AHL. He was a scratch last night for Stockton and it is believed he will be active for the Flames’ Battle of Alberta with the Edmonton Oilers to add a little grit to their lineup. Peluso has appeared in three games with Calgary this year, but has averaged just 4:40 of ATOI. He had played 16 games for Stockton with one goal, three assists and 29 penalty minutes. The team has sent forward Ryan Lomberg to Stockton to complete the roster move, according to Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg. Lomberg who received an automatic one-game suspension for instigating a fight with five minutes left in a game on Thursday against Minnesota, got an extra game from Department of Player Safety the following day. He sat out Saturday’s contest and will have to sit out another contest whenever he is brought back to Calgary.
  • The Minnesota Wild announced good news that veteran forward Mikko Koivu, who was injured in Thursday’s game when he was kneed by Calgary’s Mark Giordano, will only be out day-to-day. That’s a best case scenario as many had projected he may miss as much as three to four weeks. To fill in for Koivu in the meantime, the Wild announced they have recalled forward Luke Kunin from the Iowa Wild of the AHL. Kunin, the team’s 2016 first-round pick, has been playing in Iowa in hopes to getting his game up to speed after undergoing ACL surgery last season. The 21-year-old has fared well in the AHL as he has eight goals and 15 points in 21 games.

Sergei Shumakov Clears Unconditional Waivers, Signs A Minor League Deal With Florida

Saturday: In a somewhat surprising move, Shumakov has inked a tryout deal with Springfield of the AHL, Florida’s minor league affiliate, reports Igor Eronko of Sport-Express.  That suggests he hasn’t given up on playing in the NHL just yet and will now try his luck in the Panthers organization.

Friday: Shumakov has cleared waivers and will see his contract terminated.

Thursday: The season of contract terminations continues, this time with the placement of Sergei Shumakov on unconditional waivers according to Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post and Chris Kuc of The Athletic. The Washington Capitals only signed the Russian forward in September, but obviously things have not worked out as planned between the two sides. Shumakov will likely be headed back to the KHL provided his termination goes smoothly.

Shumakov, 26, signed a one-year entry-level contract this offseason to try his hand at the NHL, but couldn’t crack the Capitals roster out of camp. After a career-high 40 points in the KHL last year, even his play at the AHL level wasn’t exceptional with just four points in ten games. Those ten sound like the only games he’ll play in North America, though after terminating his deal he could technically sign elsewhere around the NHL.

On the one-year deal, if Shumakov expressed a desire to return to Russia there was little reason for the Capitals to keep him around. Unless they had plans on recalling him soon, there’s little chance he would have agreed to a new contract in the summer, despite being a restricted free agent. Washington will give up those rights by terminating the deal.

It will be interesting to see if Shumakov returns to CSKA, where he played last season for the first time. There is always a chance that we see him back in North America down the line, but he’s no longer an asset of the Washington organization.

Tom Wilson, Jordan Staal Dealing With Concussions

The Washington Capitals will be without one of their key forwards again tonight, but not for the usual reason. After missing 16 games earlier this season to suspension and being given a match penalty in another, Tom Wilson will instead miss tonight’s game against the Arizona Coyotes with a concussion. Wilson suffered the injury in Tuesday’s game against the Golden Knights when he was hit hard by Ryan Reaves, and is “day-to-day” according to Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post, who spoke to head coach Todd Reirden earlier today.

When taking into account Wilson’s physical, sometimes reckless style, he has been extraordinarily healthy throughout his NHL career. He has played all 82 games in three of his five NHL seasons, and only missed that mark last year due to the four-game suspension he had to start the year. That durability has been a calling card of his, and allowed the Capitals to rely on him nightly to establish a physical presence for their team. It likely helped earn him a spot next to some of the team’s best players, and also factored into his big contract extension.

Unfortunately, this injury for Wilson comes during the most productive stretch of his career. Since returning from suspension after a neutral arbitrator reduced it to 14 games—Wilson had already served 16—the power forward recorded eight goals and 14 points in 11 games for the Capitals. His success from the 2017-18 playoffs had seemed to continue, and opponents no longer just had to keep their heads up when he was on the ice. Now, a concussion puts some uncertainty in his season as his style could very well lead to more injuries down the road if the team is not careful. Reaves was obviously targeting Wilson as a physical challenge, forcefully checking him multiple times in the game and confronting him on the ice. That kind of treatment isn’t going to stop after the reputation that Wilson has built for himself.

Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes have their own concussed forward in Jordan Staal, who will miss the team’s next game according to team broadcaster Mike Maniscalco. The Hurricanes have called up Saku Maenalanen to replace Staal, who suffered the injury last night against the San Jose Sharks. This will be Maenalanen’s NHL debut should he get into the lineup against the Anaheim Ducks tomorrow night.

This is just the latest in what must be a frustrating season for Staal so far, as the veteran forward has been stymied on offense as well. With just 11 points in 27 games, the 30-year old hasn’t been able to help the Hurricanes get to that next level and start competing in the Metropolitan Division. With him out, the team will have to look elsewhere for help down the middle, and assign another center to the tough defensive matchups.
