Maple Leafs Linked To Brian Elliott

The remaining unrestricted free agent market for goaltenders isn’t exactly the deepest with the options mostly being veteran backups or third-stringers.  But it appears at least one netminder has a potential suitor as Larry Brooks of the New York Post suggests that Brian Elliott could be on his way to Toronto.

The 38-year-old is a 16-year NHL veteran and has spent time with six different teams.  Tampa Bay was the last of those squads as Elliott suited up for two seasons with them, posting a 2.96 GAA along with a .900 SV% in 41 games.  Notably, Elliott has only surpassed the .900 SV% mark once in the last four seasons.

With that in mind, the connection to the Maple Leafs might seem a bit surprising.  However, projected backup Joseph Woll is still inexperienced with just 11 career NHL regular season appearances under his belt.  Matt Murray remains in the organization for the time being but with Toronto’s salary cap situation, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll be suiting up for them in 2023-24 as things stand.

Meanwhile, among their other four goalies on an NHL contract (Dennis Hildeby, Artur Akhtyamov, Keith Petruzzelli, and Vyacheslav Peksa), none of them have played a single minute at the top level.  Only Petruzzelli (30 games) and Hildeby (two games) have played in the AHL.  Accordingly, counting on any of them to come up and serve as an injury replacement for Ilya Samsonov or Woll would be risky.

Perhaps that’s where Elliott could fit in.  While playing in the AHL seems unlikely at this stage of his career, he could be someone who is waived and officially stashed with the AHL Marlies but doesn’t actually suit up for them, instead simply skating to stay ready.  Basically, something similar to what they did with Wayne Simmonds for long stretches of last season.

A role like that might not be the most endearing but it would give Elliott a chance to sign with his hometown team and – who knows – perhaps get a few more NHL appearances under his belt.  If not Elliott, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Toronto look at another veteran to fill this type of role in 2023-24.

Analyzing Maple Leafs’ Salary Cap Situation

Around the time of the 2023 Stanley Cup Finals, the league all but confirmed that the salary cap for the 2023-24 season would be set at $83.5MM. It is expected to increase by a larger percentage by this time next summer, but a $1MM increase left a lot of teams with limited cap room to improve.

Impressively, after an assortment of trades and a plethora of free-agent signings, there is only one team that remains that is not currently cap compliant for next season. At this time, the Toronto Maple Leafs, even after LTIR space is factored in, the Maple Leafs will still be approximately $3.2MM over the salary cap.

Much of this has to do with the bloated contracts of Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and Mitch Marner, which carry a combined cap hit of $33.14MM, 39.69% of the team’s total financial capacity. There isn’t much concern that those three players are not worth those contracts, but Toronto will have to make a move nonetheless.

Looking at their cap situation, it appears the Maple Leafs have three different options in their approach to becoming cap compliant. The first of those options would be to move out goaltender Matt Murray, who has one-year, $4.688MM left on his current contract. It would not be hurting Toronto too much, as Murray had another disappointing season in 2022-23, and Joseph Woll gave the team some confidence to put him in a backup role behind Ilya Samsonov.

Finding a fit for Murray is going to be much more difficult than coming to the logical resolution of moving him. After a week of free agency, most teams have a full tandem in the net, and it’s hard to consider Murray an objective upgrade over the already established options. Scarcity aside, Toronto would more than likely have to attach a draft pick to entice teams to take on the final year of Murray’s deal, and the Maple Leafs may be unwilling to part with any of their third or fourth-round picks in the near future.

The second option would be for the team to trade forward Calle Jarnkrok and defenseman Conor Timmins for next to nothing. Carrying a combined cap hit of $3.2MM, clearing that out would get Toronto close enough to get crafty during the season. However, one of the major drawbacks of making a move such as this, both players are quality depth players (Jarnkrok being one of the most underrated in the league) and the Maple Leafs have had difficulty procuring players like this recently.

The last option for Toronto, and could become increasingly likely as far as negotiations have gone up to this point, is to move on from winger William Nylander. Nylander, as well as Matthews, are both up for max-term extensions this offseason, and Nylander and the Maple Leafs don’t appear close. In recent reporting, Nylander’s camp is asking for around $10MM a season, while Toronto is prepared to offer between $8MM-$9MM.

It’s tough to say Nylander hasn’t earned the contract that he wants, as he finished second on the team in scoring last season, and fourth on the team during the playoffs. Neither Matthews nor Marner seemed to take a “hometown discount” on their last deals with the team, so it’s unreasonable to suggest Nylander should either. It could become a best-of-both-worlds option for Toronto, as moving out Nylander would not only free up their cap situation but also bring back significant future assets in return.

In his first year as General Manager of the Maple Leafs, Brad Treliving has already made some prudent moves to improve the club. The acquisition of Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, and John Klingberg should be significant additions, but the work is not close to being done in Toronto.

Roni Hirvonen Suffers Concussion At Development Camp

  • Maple Leafs prospect Roni Hirvonen suffered a concussion earlier today in a scrimmage game at Toronto’s development camp, notes David Alter of Sports Illustrated. Assistant GM Hayley Wickenheiser indicated that the 21-year-old will need some time to recover.  Hirvonen was a second-round pick by Toronto back in 2020 (59th overall) and spent last season on loan to HIFK in Finland where he had 28 points in 57 games.  He’s expected to play in North America this upcoming season with the AHL Marlies.

Maple Leafs Prefer To Trade Murray Over Buying Him Out

After signing both Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi, the Maple Leafs now find themselves nearly $9MM over the salary cap, per CapFriendly.  Even with the LTIR allowance for Jake Muzzin, they’re still more than $3MM over that ceiling.  Accordingly, there is an expectation that they will need to move out goaltender Matt Murray.   To that end, in his latest post for NorthStar Bets, Chris Johnston notes that Toronto’s preference at this point is to try to trade Murray over using the second buyout window, a move that would open up $4MM in cap space in 2023-24 but add $2MM in dead cap charges in 2024-25.  Considering they have pricey extensions on the horizon for Auston Matthews and William Nylander, having dead cap charges on the books won’t help.

The Maple Leafs will get a second buyout window if an arbitration-eligible player files for arbitration.  That would be RFA Ilya Samsonov so expect him to be one of many players filing for arbitration by Thursday’s deadline.  But that’s Plan B for them.  For now, GM Brad Treliving will be shopping around to see who’s willing to take on that contract and just how much it will cost in an incentive to do so.

Snapshots: Nylander, Dumba, Domi

Chris Johnston reported on The Chris Johnston Show that the Toronto Maple Leafs and forward William Nylander remain far apart in extension talks. Johnston said that he believes that the 27-year-old is looking for a contract that pays him over $10MM annually while the Maple Leafs offer is in the range of $8MM-$9MM per season.

Nylander’s ask is reasonable given that he has put up back-to-back 80+ point seasons and is a pending unrestricted free agent. The trouble for the Leafs will be managing a potential Nylander extension with the cap hits of Mitch Marner, John Tavares, and whatever number Auston Matthews signs for. Couple that with the Morgan Rielly extension and a salary cap that hasn’t budged much in recent seasons, and it could create a very top-heavy team in Toronto going forward.

Nylander had a career year last season putting up 40 goals and 47 assists in 82 games and has silenced critics in recent years who doubted his ability to score in the postseason. Nylander has been a point a game player in both the regular season and the playoffs the past few years and would generate a ton of interest if his name were to be floated in the trade market.

  • Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports is reporting that the Arizona Coyotes have been in pursuit of free agent defenseman Matt Dumba since the start of free agency on Saturday. Dumba picked a very unfortunate time to have the worst offensive season of his NHL career as he put up just four goals and 10 assists this past season in 79 games with the Minnesota Wild. The 28-year-old Regina native has been a 25-point defenseman for most of his career but regressed offensively last year and saw very little in the way of power play time. Arizona has been aggressive in free agency thus far signing Jason Zucker, Alexander Kerfoot, and retaining Nick Bjugstad while trading for defenseman Sean Durzi.
  • Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet mentioned this morning that newly acquired Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi would like to remain with the team well beyond the one year he signed on for. Domi was inked to a one-year deal that will pay him $3MM this season, but as Friedman puts it Domi wants Toronto to be his long-term home and it’s easy to see why. Domi’s father Tie Domi was one of the most popular Maple Leafs in recent history and Max spent much of his childhood in Toronto while his father was still playing. He will now get the chance to put on the same jersey he watched his father wear and play in front of the same fans who cheered his Dad on for 12 seasons.

Toronto Maple Leafs Hire John Gruden

The Toronto Maple Leafs have added to their organizational coaching staff, naming John Gruden as the head coach of the AHL’s Toronto Marlies today.

Toronto cut ties with their entire AHL coaching staff a little over six weeks ago – in fact, it was on the same day they announced Kyle Dubas wouldn’t be returning as general manager. Head coach Greg Moore, as well as assistants A.J. MacLean and John Snowden, were let go after the team lost in the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs to the Rochester Americans.

Now Gruden, 53, comes in as an AHL rookie. He’s spent the last five seasons in NHL coaching roles, serving on the New York Islanders’ bench for four years from 2018 to 2022 before joining Jim Montgomery’s staff in Boston for 2022-23. Before that, he spent three seasons (2015 to 2018) as an OHL head coach with the Flint Firebirds and Hamilton Bulldogs, as well as four seasons as an assistant coach with the U.S. National Team Development Program (2011 to 2015). There, he was part of the 2012 and 2014 gold-medal-winning teams at the World Juniors, and he also guided Hamilton to an OHL championship in 2018, his final season.

A former NHL defenseman, Gruden amassed 92 games over six seasons with the Bruins, Ottawa Senators, and Washington Capitals. The father of current Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jonathan Gruden, he last played in 2004 in Washington.

Maple Leafs assistant general manager and director of minor league operations Ryan Hardy had this to say:

We’re very pleased to name John as the Head Coach of the Toronto Marlies. John has supported the development and performance of his players throughout his coaching career while delivering team success at every level. His resume from the U.S. National Team Development Program to the OHL and eventually the NHL has armed him with a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be invaluable to both players and staff.

He’ll head up a Marlies roster next season that’s expected to include prospects like 2019 fourth-round pick Nick Abruzzese, 2020 second-round pick Roni Hirvonen, and 2020 third-round pick Topi Niemela. The team has not yet announced his assistants.

Maple Leafs Sign Max Domi

07/03/23: Toronto has now made their signing of Domi official.

They’ve also added depth center Dylan Gambrell on a one-year, $775k one-way deal, per PuckPedia. Gambrell, a 2016 second-round pick, scored four goals and 10 points in 60 games for the Ottawa Senators last season.

07/02/23 8:40 PM: The Maple Leafs and Domi are closing in on a one-year contract worth $3MM, Chris Johnston of NorthStar Bets and TSN reports (Twitter link).  PuckPedia adds (Twitter link) that the deal will contain a 10-team no-trade clause.  Friedman tweets that the deal may not be made official until Monday.

07/02/23 6:26 PM: After adding Tyler Bertuzzi earlier today to help shore up their top six, it appears that the Maple Leafs aren’t necessarily done with their summer spending.  Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports (Twitter link) that Toronto and Max Domi are in discussions about a contract for next season.

Considering that the Maple Leafs are staring down the cost of two pricey extensions that will be kicking in next season (Auston Matthews and William Nylander, or perhaps Bertuzzi himself if talks with Nylander stall out), it seems likely that the team would want to keep any agreement with Domi limited to a single season which they have accomplished here.  That would allow them to have as much flexibility as possible for those upcoming extensions.

The 28-year-old had to settle for a one-year contract last summer, inking a one-year, $3MM deal with Chicago.  That proved to be a wise decision for Domi who was moved back to center and responded with his second-best offensive performance, putting up 18 goals and 31 assists in 60 games before being dealt to Dallas at the trade deadline.  It took Domi a little while to settle in with his new club; he had just seven points in 20 games following the swap but was more productive for them in the playoffs, tallying 13 points in 19 games.

That was good enough to earn him the 11th ranking in our Top 50 UFA list last month with an expectation that he could finally land at least a medium-term agreement, something that has proven elusive for Domi lately.  Since his entry-level contract expired back in 2018, Domi has signed three separate deals, none longer than two seasons while playing for five separate teams during that stretch.  However, with this deal with the Maple Leafs, that streak of short-term contracts will continue.

In terms of where Domi might fit on Toronto’s depth chart, it seems like he could wind up taking the place of last year’s deadline acquisition Ryan O’Reilly, who inked a four-year contract with Nashville on Saturday.  That could see him centering the third line at times or moving up onto the second line, either as a winger or pushing John Tavares to the wing.  That type of versatility could certainly come in handy for the Maple Leafs while also giving Domi a chance to play in an offensive-minded environment in the hopes of bolstering his market for next summer when the salary cap is set to rise.

Fitting in a contract for Domi would appear to be tricky within Toronto’s current cap situation.  Per CapFriendly, the Maple Leafs have less than $600K in remaining LTIR room, assuming that Jake Muzzin is out for all of next season as expected.  That’s less than the league minimum salary and Domi will cost considerably more than that.

There’s also the matter of re-signing starting goaltender Ilya Samsonov who will be eyeing a considerable raise on the $1.8MM he made last season.  Having him file for salary arbitration to trigger a second buyout window would allow them to buy out Matt Murray but the $4MM in savings is likely to be needed to afford Samsonov’s next contract.  Accordingly, GM Brad Treliving is going to have to get creative to make the math work as he brings Domi into the fold to help bolster Toronto’s attack.

Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Tyler Bertuzzi

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed unrestricted free agent winger Tyler Bertuzzi to a one-year, $5.5MM AAV deal. The contract carries a full no-movement clause and a signing bonus of $4.725MM, the maximum he’s eligible for with this AAV.

This contract is a major win for the Maple Leafs, thanks to the deal’s one-year term. Toronto’s biggest barrier to adding significant talent this offseason has long been seen as the looming expiration of the team’s major contracts next summer.

Since Toronto needs to preserve long-term financial flexibility in order to be able to afford those deals, it was generally believed that they wouldn’t be able to shop for the caliber of players typically earmarked for long-term deals. This will be a tight squeeze for the Maple Leafs’ salary cap, but with Jake Muzzin’s $5.625MM on long-term injured reserve, the team should just about be able to fit this deal onto their books.

The 28-year-old winger has played for two of Toronto’s Original Six rivals, the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins, and excelled the last two years. Bertuzzi scored 30 goals and 62 points in just 68 games in 2021-22, and although he wasn’t great earlier this season for Detroit he managed 26 points in 28 combined regular season and playoff games after his trade to the Boston Bruins.

Bertuzzi’s combination of skill and sandpaper is coveted across the league, and his unique agitating style is similar to what Toronto lost when Michael Bunting signed with the Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow.

Assuming he can stay healthy (a potentially dangerous assumption given his injury issues over the past few years) Bertuzzi will comfortably slot into one of Toronto’s top scoring lines and be in a position to play with one of two high-end centers in either John Tavares or Auston Matthews.

His playoff performance for Boston, leading them in points in their first-round loss to the Florida Panthers, should give Maple Leafs fans hope that he won’t suffer from the same playoff demons their other star forwards seem to fall victim to year after year.

Not only is this a winning move for Toronto, but it’s also a savvy move for Bertuzzi to make the most out of a difficult situation. It’s likely that given Bertuzzi’s injury troubles and the lack of cap space across the league, Bertuzzi may not have received the type of pricey, long-term offers he may have entered the market expecting. Now, he’ll be able to play on a team well-stocked with offensive talent and potentially have the best season of his career.

That’ll set him up to potentially re-enter the market next summer, where he could really score if he remains healthy and plays in Toronto the way he played in Boston. This move isn’t without risk, but there isn’t a better player on the market for Toronto to acquire that could fill the void left by Bunting.

Arizona Coyotes To Sign Alexander Kerfoot

The Arizona Coyotes are locking in former Toronto Maple Leafs center Alexander Kerfoot for the next two seasons at a $3.5MM cap hit, PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan reports.

It’s another significant free-agent loss for Toronto today, who will undoubtedly be looking to add some reinforcements to their top nine in the coming days. For Kerfoot, though, he’ll continue to make the salary he’s made for the past four seasons with fewer taxes in the desert.

Kerfoot’s been a controversial player during his time in Toronto, with very few overtly impressed with his play. He provided immense defensive value this season, though, and he does have 45-50 point upside if given the opportunity to produce.

He could very well glean that opportunity in Arizona, potentially even slotting in as a center between Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz. Even if not, he’ll get the opportunity to play with some other up-and-coming talents like Matias Maccelli and Dylan Guenther, receiving plenty of ice time in the process.

Kerfoot will be a UFA again in 2025 at the age of 30.

Toronto Maple Leafs Sign John Klingberg

The Toronto Maple Leafs have added another Swedish defenseman: former Dallas Stars blueliner John Klingberg. The team has signed Klingberg to an undisclosed contract, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. According to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, Klingberg has signed a one-year deal. The team confirmed the deal, which carries a $4.15MM cap hit.

This signing is a major opportunity for Klingberg, who’ll now get a chance to play in a top-four role under some of the brightest lights in hockey. Klingberg was originally a top free agent of last year’s class but ultimately had to settle on a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks.

He had a very difficult season split between Anaheim and the Minnesota Wild, and is now again signing a “prove-it” deal.

Only this time, he’s signed with a consistent regular-season juggernaut rather than a team anticipating another year outside the playoffs looking in.

Klingberg finished with 33 points in 67 games, a decent total but not quite up to the high standard for offensive production he set earlier in his career.

He’ll now have a chance to return to the stratosphere of offensive production he’s been more accustomed to throughout his career, as he’s likely going to end up partnered with either Mark Giordano or Jake McCabe. Those two are well-regarded defensive defensemen who will afford Klingberg the offensive freedom to play a more aggressive, pace-pushing offensive game.

If Klingberg can manage to find a role on Toronto’s power play, the odds of him having a productive season increase even further. Morgan Rielly is entrenched as Toronto’s top offensive blueliner, but Klingberg can settle in as their second option and rack up points alongside all of the offensive talent in head coach Sheldon Keefe’s lineup.

Some might criticize this deal as an inefficient use of scarce cap dollars by new Toronto general manager Brad Treliving, and those concerns definitely have merit.

With Rielly already on their roster and the team maybe in need of more well-rounded defensive help, was Klingberg truly their most optimal target? Was adding him for more than $4MM a wise choice when Erik Gustafsson took just $825k from the New York Rangers?

Those are fair questions to ask, and they likely will be by an always on top of things Toronto media. But the best way for both Klingberg and Treliving to silence those questions will be for the defenseman to go out and have a vintage season, a year reminiscent of 2017-18 when Klingberg scored 67 points, led NHL blueliners in assists, and made the All-Star game.
