Petteri Lindbohm Signs In Switzerland

July 27, 2018 at 5:46 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 1 Comment

The St. Louis Blues have done a miraculous job of both adding talent – bringing in Ryan O’Reilly, David Perron, Tyler Bozak, and Patrick Maroon to name a few – and retaining their own restricted free agent assets this off-season. The team has already signed Joel Edmundson, Dmitrij Jaskin, Robby Fabbri, and Oskar Sundqvist to reasonable extensions and had just two RFA’s left to sign. However, one of those players has decided to go elsewhere to continue his hockey career. Defenseman Petteri Lindbohm will not re-up in St. Louis, but instead sign with Lausanne of the Swiss NLA. The team announced the transaction today, making the one-year contract official. The Blues will retain Lindbohm’s NHL rights.

Lindbohm, 24, will likely be missed by some in the Blues organization but not by others. Although the 2012 sixth-round pick out of Helsinki, Finland showed promise, he never could quite put it all together. Both injuries and inconsistency impacted the development of a player some saw as a future top-four defenseman. When healthy, Lindbohm showed a well-rounded two-way game at the AHL level, but never stayed at the minor league level long enough to impress for a whole season. In the NHL, Lindbohm simply struggled to produce when given an opportunity and too often found himself on the wrong side of goals. This past season, Lindbohm did not make an appearance with the Blues for the first time since coming over to North America in 2014, yet he also suited up for only 23 games with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves and posted only three points. He was ruled out for the remainder of the season in early January with a shoulder injury.

The Blues may have been willing to offer Lindbohm a minimum salary two-way deal, or maybe just an AHL contract with the San Antonio Rampage, just to see if Lindbohm could ever string together a whole season of healthy, high-end play, but it seems unlikely that they would have matched the salary and certainly not the type of role that Lindbohm will get with Lausanne. The Swiss club struggled in 2017-18, having to fight off relegation, and will likely throw Lindbohm into a top pair position right away in hopes that his talent can help to jump start the new campaign, especially with the risk that he could be struck by injury at any time. Playing alongside other NHL transplants like Dustin Jeffrey and Joel Vermin, Lindbohm will look not only to improve his own stock, but also prove that he can lead a team to the postseason.

With Lindbohm departing, St. Louis has just defenseman Jordan Schmaltz to sign before they their restricted free agents are all tied up. The Blues are bankrupt for cap space, looking at just a $285K margin right now per CapFriendly, but the team won’t carry 15 forwards as projected and the demotion of a Jordan Nolan or Chris Thorburn should be enough to fit Schmaltz in under the cap for the coming season.

Remaining Restricted Free Agents

July 26, 2018 at 12:29 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

We’re getting closer to turning the calendar over to August, and there is still a lot of work to do for teams around the NHL. 10 arbitration cases remain unsettled, including for star players like William Karlsson and Mark Stone. Both will be extremely interesting to follow, as their respective teams have tough decisions on their hands.

For the Vegas Golden Knights, do you hand out a long-term expensive contract to a player that is still relatively unproven. Though Karlsson scored 43 goals this season he had just 18 career tallies beforehand, and finished this season with an impossible 23.4% shooting percentage. There is almost no chance that he can maintain that rate going forward, meaning his huge 2017-18 season may be a career-high. On the other side of that coin though is the increased opportunity he was given after switching teams, which could provide a realistic chance for him to be a 30-goal, 65-point player going forward. Signing him now would likely get you a bit of a discount on that type of scoring threat, though Vegas would assume almost all of the risk.

In Ottawa, there’s no clear direction on how the team will deal with Stone’s impending unrestricted free agency. Obviously one of the team’s most talented players, an arbitration award of one year would stop the Senators from negotiating with Stone’s camp until January on any potential extension and could make him a prime trade candidate. The 26-year old posted his fourth consecutive 20-goal season in 2017-18 despite playing in just 58 games. With all the turmoil in Ottawa it could be difficult to convince him to stick around long-term.

Beyond the arbitration cases though there is an incredible amount of talent left on the RFA board. Dylan Larkin, William Nylander, Sam Reinhart, Shea Theodore, Josh Morrissey and many others remain unsigned and could all be looking at expensive long-term deals with their respective clubs. These players are already excellent players in the NHL before they’ve even become eligible for arbitration and could really grind the offseason to a halt if they decide to hold out. There’s no indication that anyone is planning a long negotiation, but we’re now almost a month into the signing period without any deals.

Below is the full list of unsigned restricted free agents:

Ondrej Kase (ANA)

Marek Langhamer (ARZ)

Mattias Janmark Re-Signs With Dallas Stars

July 25, 2018 at 11:02 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Dallas Stars have dealt with one of their restricted free agents, re-signing Mattias Janmark to a one-year contract. The deal carries a cap hit of $2.3MM, and will allow the team to avoid the arbitration hearing which had been set for August 3rd. Janmark will remain an RFA at the conclusion of the contract.

This deal is the very definition of a “prove it” contract for Janmark and the Stars, who will see whether the 19 goals he scored last season are a sign of things to come or a result of his 14% shooting percentage. For being almost 26 years old, Janmark doesn’t have a huge history of NHL success since he spent several professional seasons in Sweden and lost an entire year to Osteochrondritis dissecans. As Sean Shaprio of The Athletic tweets, Janmark seems to be the only professional athlete to have ever dealt with that specific disorder, which claimed his entire 2016-17 season following surgery.

Still, he has produced 63 points in 154 games and seems entirely recovered and ready to contribute this season. For $2.3MM he doesn’t have to produce any more than that, but he now has a chance to prove he deserves a long-term deal with an even higher cap hit. Next summer he’ll be in his final year of restricted free agency, meaning any deal would have to buy out almost exclusively UFA years. If he’s going to stay in Dallas and be part of the solution, he’ll have to show that he can be a consistent secondary scoring threat while being responsible enough to contribute on the penalty kill.

William Carrier Re-Signs With Vegas Golden Knights

July 23, 2018 at 1:04 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Vegas Golden Knights have signed one of their final three restricted free agents, inking William Carrier to a two-year contract worth a total of $1.45MM. Carrier was not eligible to file for salary arbitration this year, and will still be an RFA at the end of this deal.

The 23-year old Carrier was an interesting expansion selection for the Golden Knights, given that the Buffalo Sabres had left Linus Ullmark unprotected and available in the draft. Buffalo sent Vegas a sixth-round pick to make the decision for them, which still appears to be a good value for the Sabres to keep their goaltender of the future. While the Golden Knights certainly didn’t have a lack of goaltending options in the draft, it could have been useful to have Ullmark around when the team was down to their fifth-string netminder at one point this season.

Instead, Carrier was the pick and he ended up playing in 37 games for the Golden Knights during the regular season. Throughout those games he brought effective energy and physicality, though he recorded just three points and was held scoreless in 10 playoff games. Vegas didn’t rely on their fourth line to score, but you still would have liked to see a bit of offensive upside from a player who was once a second-round pick. Carrier now has just 11 points in 88 total NHL games, but will be asked to provide a big body for the fourth line for at least the next two seasons. His deal does not appear to be a two-way contract meaning he’ll earn the same amount in the NHL and AHL, and he is eligible to be claimed off waivers if the team tries to send him to the minor leagues.

The Golden Knights have plenty of cap space remaining for next season, but still have work to do before their roster is complete. William Karlsson and Shea Theodore are their final two unsigned players, and both are candidates for long-term deals. Karlsson has a more pressing timeline, as his arbitration hearing is scheduled for August 4th. After jumping from a career total of 18 goals to scoring 43 just last season, he’ll be one of the more interesting arbitration cases in the history of the NHL if he makes it that far. Carrier meanwhile will be arbitration eligible when this new contract expires.

Kings Re-Sign Defenseman Alex Lintuniemi

July 18, 2018 at 5:47 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

The Los Angeles Kings have locked up the last of their restricted free agents. The Kings have announced a new contract extension for defenseman Alex Lintuniemi, their last unsigned RFA. It is a one-year, two-way contract for the young Finnish rearguard that carries a minimum $650K cap hit at the NHL level.

Lintuniemi, 22, has made great strides in each of his pro seasons. The 2014 second-round pick was drafted for his size, strength, and potential but was still a very raw prospect when he turned pro in 2015. He spent his entire first full season in the Kings’ system developing at the ECHL level, before becoming a part-time player in the AHL in 2016-17. This past season was easily his best, as he became a dependable, every-day player for the AHL’s Ontario Reign and recorded a career-high four goals and 24 points.

Lintuniemi still has some work to do on his game and will likely never be much of an offensive threat in the NHL, but is taking steps toward becoming a solid defensive player. While the Kings run seven or eight deep on the blue line with true NHL-caliber players, don’t be surprised to see Lintuniemi get his first look at the top level some time in the upcoming season.

Colorado Avalanche Sign Three RFAs

July 16, 2018 at 5:58 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

The Colorado Avalanche are down to one restricted free agent remaining – defenseman Patrik Nemeth – after announcing three contract extensions today with RFAs. Goaltender Spencer Martin, defenseman Ryan Graves, and defenseman Mason Geertsen, whose deal had already been leaked, have all signed one-year contracts for upcoming season. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Martin, the most well-known of the trio, has been a mainstay in net in the minors for the Avalanche for the past few years. Martin has made 84 starts for the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage over the past two seasons as well as three NHL appearances. Martin’s numbers at both levels are rather pedestrian, but the 23-year-old was Colorado’s top goaltender prospect until the team used a third-round pick on big Finnish keeper Justus Annunen this June. Between losing that title and the team’s additions of Philipp Grubauer and Pavel Francouz in net, Martin is facing a big season in 2018-19 with his relevance in the Avs’ system in doubt.

Graves, 23, was just recently acquired by Colorado at the trade deadline in a swap of defensive prospects with the New York Rangers. The big blue liner was a 2013 fourth-round pick who has produced well in the AHL to this point in his pro career, but has yet to get a shot at the NHL. Graves is far from a polished prospect but still has some upside to his game that brings both physicality and play-making ability.

Like Graves, Geertsen has also failed to make it to the highest level yet in his career. Similar to Graves in size and experience, at 23 Geertsen still lacks a pro-caliber offensive game. Last season was his first spent entirely in the AHL, as Geertsen has previously spent extensive time in the ECHL.

Juuse Saros Signs Three-Year Deal With Nashville Predators

July 16, 2018 at 3:02 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Nashville Predators continue to re-sign their young restricted free agents, this time inking goaltender Juuse Saros to a three-year $4.5MM ($1.5MM AAV) contract. That leaves just Miikka Salomaki as the team’s lone unsigned RFA after Ryan Hartman also signed earlier today.

Just like Hartman’s $875K deal, this appears to be an incredible bargain for the Predators. While Saros is still technically a backup goaltender as long as Pekka Rinne continues to put up Vezina-winning seasons, he also has been one of the league’s best netminders the last two seasons. Posting a .925 save percentage in 26 appearances, he ranked ninth in the entire league among goaltenders who saw at least 20 games. He and Rinne formed one of the best tandems in the league, and could again this season for a reasonable combined cap hit of $8.5MM.

It’s the final two years that could be really interesting for the Predators, as Rinne’s current contract expires after the 2018-19 season. If the team decides not to extend a contract to Rinne (who will be 36 at the end of the season) they would still have a potentially elite starter for an incredibly low cap hit of $1.5MM. The fact that Saros is still a restricted free agent at the end of this deal makes it even more impressive, as they are almost guaranteed to not have to pay him a big contract until he takes over as the full-time starter. That’s a perfect situation to be in for the Predators, who are right in the middle of a Stanley Cup contention window that looks like it will be wide open for quite some time. Though there are big extensions to come for the likes of Ryan Ellis and Roman Josi over the next two years, the rest of their core is already locked in to reasonably priced, if not bargain-basement contracts.

For Saros, he gets the chance to continue developing under an exemplary starter in Rinne and should still get a healthy raise when his contract expires. He’ll be 26 when the deal expires and on his final year of restricted free agency, meaning any long-term deal would be buying out almost exclusively UFA seasons. While that is a fine situation for the Predators, it still leaves Saros with plenty of earning potential for his career and a good chance to spend it behind a solid defense in Nashville.

Buffalo Sabres Re-Sign C.J. Smith

July 16, 2018 at 2:35 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Sabres are making quick work of their restricted free agents, signing Danny O’Regan, Nicholas Baptiste and Justin Bailey over the last few days. Today they’ve scratched another one off the list by inking C.J. Smith to a one-year two-way contract worth $874K at the NHL level. That leaves just Sam Reinhart—who is expected to sign a much longer and more lucrative deal—left to sign among their 2018 RFAs.

Smith, 23, is coming off his first season of professional hockey and has done nothing but impress for the Sabres. Signed as an undrafted college free agent out of UMass-Lowell, he recorded 44 points in 57 games for the Rochester Americans and looked poised to dominate the minor leagues for a long time. It’s whether or not there is impact NHL upside that is still the question with Smith, who despite all his offensive talent still sometimes lacks consistency at the other end of the rink and doesn’t have a big frame or much physicality to offer.

The worst thing to happen for Smith this summer may have been the Sabres’ improvements, as Conor Sheary, Vladimir Sobotka, Tage Thompson and Patrik Berglund have all been added to the forward group, essentially pushing him down the depth chart. There is still a chance that Smith impresses in camp and head coach Phil Housley is forced to include him on the opening day roster, but the additions make it more likely that he’ll start in Rochester once again. Given the fact that he’s still waiver-exempt only adds to that likelihood, and will probably force Smith to wait for his chance later in the year.

Ottawa Senators Re-Sign Nick Paul

July 16, 2018 at 9:40 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Ottawa Senators have signed one of their restricted free agents, inking Nick Paul to a one-year two-way contract worth $650K at the NHL level. Paul was not eligible to file for salary arbitration, and will be an RFA at the conclusion of the deal.

Paul, 23, only played 11 games for Ottawa last season, instead spending most of the year with the Belleville Senators of the AHL. The 6’4″ forward is an excellent offensive contributor at the minor league level, but can’t seem to carve out a full-time role in the NHL. There may be more opportunity this season with players like Mike Hoffman and Alexandre Burrows not around, but Paul will have to show that he can contribute in various ways to really make an impact.

Originally selected in the fourth round by the Dallas Stars, Paul has just 36 NHL games under his career to this point. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him add to that total this year, but he doesn’t look like a key part of the turnaround in Ottawa. The Senators are expected to struggle on the ice even if they keep captain Erik Karlsson around, and are looking to add more young talent into the pipeline. Even with his relative youth, Paul doesn’t possess the type of high-end skill that is needed for Ottawa to really get back to contending.

Buffalo Sabres Sign Justin Bailey To One-Year Contract

July 15, 2018 at 2:07 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Sabres have signed another restricted free agent as they have signed Justin Bailey to a one-year, two-way contract worth $715K. The winger will still have two RFA years remaining after next season. It marks the third restricted free agent to ink a new deal after Danny O’Regan signed earlier today, while Nicholas Baptiste signed on Saturday.

Bailey has been solid at every level he’s played so far, but hasn’t been able to break into the Sabres’ lineup. While he has the size and speed to play in the NHL, he hasn’t found the skill or consistency yet. The 23-year-old potted 20 goals twice with the Rochester Americans of the AHL and spent a lot of time going back and forth between Rochester and Buffalo this past year. The Buffalo native scored 10 goals and five assists in 37 games with the Americans this season, while posting three goals and an assist in 12 games with the Sabres.

Bailey’s contract is for less than he made during his entry-level deal when he was making $894K at the NHL level. The Sabres still have two restricted free agents remaining as they still have to sign winger C.J. Smith and most importantly center Sam Reinhart.
